Satellite C55-A-1NU - RAM upgrade information and SSD upgrade

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A-1NU and I want to know if is possible to replace the optical drive with a SSD? Can anyone tell me what do I need to do? What kind of rack and SSD should I buy. Thanks
Also I want to improve the ram memory the laptop has only 1 slot 4 gb ddr3 1600 mhz but is single channel. What model should I buy to work in dual channel I use cpu z to identify the model and it shows me hmt451s6mfr8a do I need exactly this one or I can put 2 of other manufacture ty.

This upgrade with SSD is not supported by Toshiba so all you do is on your risk. Check please this forum. If Im remembering well some people have already posted own experiences.
I think in most cases they have ordered such HDD/SSD caddy but disc drive was not recognized at all.
In my opinion you should not do such upgrade.
RAM
According notebook specification you can upgrade RAM up to 16 GB and at the bottom side under memory cover you should find two memory slots. How to upgrade RAM is described in users manuals. Check please page 72.
Compatible RAM modules for your notebook model are:
4GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M4G
8GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M8G

  • Satellite R630-155 - Fan is too noisy and SSD upgrade

I am the owner of a Toshiba Satellite R630-155 (Core i5-480). My problems are:
    1. The fan is too noisy and never stops. In normal operation (browsing and general office work) there is a constant high pitch noise that is audible three to four meters away in an office environment - in high load you just can't stand it!!! The fan never stops... even when you are doing nothing...
    2. Heat is a big problem. The bottom of the laptop is constantly overheating and i have to place it on my desk in a way that the bottom left corner is outside of the table so it can breath fresh air from below - if not, the temperature rises and the (loud) fan is unable to keep up. When i work with the laptop while sitting on a sofa, i have to place a thick book between the laptop and my legs. The book must be thick (more than an inch) with hard covers, otherwise the heat passes through the book!!!!
    3. Last (but not least, i just mention the biggest problems here) it's the problem with SSD installation. I bought a used Corsair F80 (80Gb SSD) from a friend, but i was unable to use it with the Toshiba - the BIOS was not detecting the disk. I tried installing all latest firmware updates for both laptop and SSD but i had no success. Then i gave the disk back and i bought a brand new Zalman 128Gb SSD (SSD0128N1 Sandforce) but i had exactly the same problem. I contacted my local Toshiba support and after a lot of conversation the only answer i got is that the laptop is not compatible with those SSD's and this is acceptable by Toshiba and not their problem. They told me that if i need an SSD upgrade i can only go for the Toshiba SSD that is installed on the portege series, which is sold by Toshiba for a ridiculously expensive price - about $500 for 128Gb. I contacted the European support center and i got the exact same reply. I searched on the Internet and i found someone else with the exact same problem with a Corsair 128Gb SSD - he found that the laptop detects the SSD after ten to twenty reboots. I tried that and it was true - after a lot of reboots the laptop detected the Zalman disk and i was able to install Windows 7 successfully, but the process is unacceptable. Also the disk is benchmarked by official sites at the speed of an OCZ Vertex 2 128Gb (and slightly better), but when i ran a benchmark in the Toshiba, the results I got were below half of the advertised speed. Same benchmark in another machine for the same disk, resulted in the advertised speeds.
Shame for Toshiba... nice design and portability but everything else is a big flaw. Their support in non existent and they do not value their customers. I feel they stole my money and I'll never buy a Toshiba laptop again.
Sorry for the big message, but I need I have to warn potential customers. Can someone help me with any of the above problems? Do you have the same problems too?
    To be continued...

    Hi buddy,
Regarding the fan and heat issue: Did you make BIOS update? Friend of me has Satellite R630 too and he told me that fan activity with new BIOS version 2.10 is reduced. Furthermore the notebook is cooler than before so I would recommend installing this update. You can download the BIOS update here:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers
But before you start the BIOS update you should consider the following tips:
    -Run update as Administrator only
-Unzip all files from zip archive before you start the update file
-Close all running programs and also the antivirus and firewall
-Make sure that battery is fully charged
Regarding the SSDs its always a little bit complicated installing 3rd party products and nobody can guarantee that such parts would work. You are always on safely side with original Toshiba spare parts.
Everything what you can do is installing the newest firmware for SSD and hope that it works but who knows maybe the BIOS update will also help you in this case ;)

There are some important steps to take prior to doing the upgrade.  Review this MS posted document. Be sure to run the upgrade assistant.
Be sure that Windows 8 has all of the latest MS updates installed. There are prerequisite patches that are required.

I've been running 64-bit Windows 8 Consumer Preview very nicely for several months and want to upgrade to 64-bit Windows Pro on my Pavilion a1440n. When I've tried to install from within the OS I get weird messages indicating that it can't be installed on a USB Flash drive (which I'm not trying to do). When I tried doing a clean install I got an odd message saying that certain installer files were missing and it would not complete. I called Microsoft customer support and the agent there thought my cpu would work because it wouldn't support Hyper-V, even though I understand that it optional. From running coreinfo.exe I can see that I have the PAE, NX, and SSE2 on the cpu enabled as meets requirements.
When I ran through th HP site I saw that this machine has not been tested. Is there any way of getting confirmation that Windows 8 Pro 64-bit will or won't run on my machine? The HP Product code for it is ER904AA#ABA.
    Thanks!

  • RAM and SSD upgrade

I have two questions about my dv7-6b77dx.
    1) RAM Upgrade:
I want to upgrade my memory to 4+4 from 2+4. Do I have to get the same exact 4GB RAM (CPU-Z says it's Samsung M471B5273DH0-CH9) or can I get any 4GB RAM? I'm asking this because I'm not sure if the two modules have to be identical for dual channel memory. Also, new Samsung models are 30nm with less power consumption while my 4GB is 40nm. Would that be a problem if I connected a 30nm and a 40 nm?
    2) SSD:
I want to make sure AHCI is enabled for the new SSD. I googled it and it says it should be configurable in the BIOS but my BIOS doesn't have that sort of a setting. My processor is Core I7 2670QM and I couldn't get anything about the chipset from CPU-Z other than "Intel". How can I enable AHCI or check if it's enabled?
    Thanks a lot!

If you want a memory upgrade to work the first time it is installed always purchase and install a matched pair of identical modules. Don't mix and match manufacturers or modules of different capacities or configurations.
    2) SSD:

The installed chipset is the Intel HM65 Express chipset. Your notebook does support SSD drives. Normally you can verify that ACHI is being used  by checking the BIOS configuration. It is unfortunate, but an HP BIOS does not gve you the ability to configure SATA as IDE (emulation) or AHCI.  You can use a free utility called PCWizard 2010 to see what disk controller is installed and the mode it is operating in. The following image is from within Windows 7 and the PC is a desktop with a ASUS Crosshair IV Formula motherboard
    Thanks a lot!

  • Satellite C55-A-1N2 - Windows is broken and no access to repair option

    Hello,
A friend of mine got a Satellite C55-A-1N2 brand new from november 2013 with windows 8.1.
    The serial number is: yd344983s
At the beginning, there was a wifi issue.
    I found lot of adware...
I uninstall most of them by hand, and clean everything with adwcleaner.
The portable works fine, i switch off the DNS client service and add anti-pupsadware in hosts file to prevent any new adwares installation.
All was ok and give it back to friend.
But at the next start up, windows was slow, unable to connect wifi, enter config panel, do anything actually.
I tried according to manual, to press F8 and power on, but that just switch on to windows login.
I tried also F12, and tried to use windows seven CD with no success.
Do you have any ideas of what i can do ?
    That looks pretty bad.
    Thanks.
    Mickael

I dont know how to access that blue menu
    > As mentioned by Keany, you have to completely power OFF the system. The point is that Win 8 as well as Win > 8.1 do not power off the notebooks but set it to hybrid shut down mode in order to speed up the system boot > process.
As i said in the first post, it was no possible to do lot of things apart login, so set the option for full power off was not possible.
I manage to access to bios using F2, but was not useful (just play with CMS vs UEFI, normal boot speed ...)
Nothing to lose, i tried the "0" that lead me to HDD Recovery for a full reset.
Manual said that it will erase eveything, but actually user & documents are still here.
Now that it works fine, i set the option for full power off for more tests and acknowledgment :
    - The F12 works, HDD recovery or bootable devices choice. Ok
    - The 0 still lead to HDD recovery. Ok
    - The F8 still does nothing ... ??!! Strange !
So manual are not very accurate on this model, *but my job is done and i did recovery dvds for next time.*
    Thanks.

  • BW upgrade - pre and post upgrade reports

    Hi All
    Quick question please.
We plan to upgrade our BW ABAP system from NW 731 SPS7 to NW 740 SPS6.
I read the ASU toolbox note 1000009 and can see that there is no file for our scenario i..e from 73X to 740 so note 1734333 is the way to go here when prompted for ASU toolbox run. However within the note 1734333, it states "This note requires that all pre-requisites for the BW-related system copy automation are met according to note 1707321". When i read 1707321 it talks about installation procedure for PCA which is part of LVM, a licensed software. We don't have this license.  Hence I am wondering if note 1707321 is applicable for us at all or is it that this note would bring about changes in the system and sets up a staging area upon which the Z report from the other note(1734333) builds and then creates task list for pre and post upgrade. I am certain that we will have to implement Z report from note 1734333 however the reference to note 1707321 has created some confusion.
Also once we implement the Z report from 1734333, the note says, the report needs not be transferred but the objects generated need to be. Would the author here referring to reports - SAP_BW_BEFORE UPGRADE and SAP_BW_AFTER UPGRADE and having them recorded into a transport.  Any thoughts here please.  If the author is indeed referring to these reports only, how do we know this will show up in quality systems via STC01 as input options.
    Regards
    Kalyan

I re-read the note again, It says, If task manager content notes(1707321) are not applied, we will not see reports for stopping RDA Daemons and Process chains i...e report RS_SYSTEM_SHUTDOWN. However we are on NW 731 SP7 so we already have this report. This means we can go ahead with implementing the Z report from 1734333 and forget about the other note.  Have I comprehended it correctly

  • MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display and SSD upgrade?

Looking to upgrade to a SSD in my MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display. Are there ones that work better in a MacBook Pro?

In theory at least, any SSD will work fine. There are some additional considerations to make, however. It mostly revolves around updating the drive's firmware. Many SSD companies do not offer Mac-friendly ways to perform this procedure. From the list Clinton provided, you can drop Corsair and Samsung immediately for this reason.
I would not consider OWC, Intel, or any SSD that uses a Sandforce chipset because of spotty reliability. Yes, improvements have been made, but I still do not trust them. Of the dozens of SSDs I've owned and deployed over the last 2-3 years, the only ones to need replacement were ones with Sandforce.
That leaves Crucial, Plextor, and OCZ. The former two basically use the same Marvell chipset. While I can't speak for Plextor, Crucial's firmware updates are OS agnostic. You simply down an .iso file, burn it to CD, boot from that disc, and perform the update. It works perfectly on a Mac. Doing a quick check of Plextor's support site, it seems the proedure is the same.
For OCZ, I'm only focusing on the Vector and Vertex 4. The former is brand new, having just hit the market within the last couple weeks. If you're looking to buy right now, I would stick with the Vertex 4 as it's a more proven commodity. OCZ has created a suite of tools that you copy to a USB flash drive. You can boot from it, and it takes you to what I think is a very heavily modified Linux distribution. From there, you can do a firmware update, check drive health, and perform a SATA secure erase to return the drive to its "out of the box" state. To get the most from the tools, you should have a USB mouse plugged in. Also, firmware updates require the use of a hard-wired Ethernet cable; you can't use wireless.
Bottom line - for an SSD upgrade, stick with Crucial, Plextor, or OCZ as they are the most Mac-friendly (aside from original Apple parts, of course).

  • Ram and SSD upgrade on MB Pro 13.3" 2.4GHz (Model ID: 7,1)

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro 13.3" 2.4GHz (Model ID: 7,1) and I am looking to upgrade some of the hardware and make it run much faster.  I currently am running both Mac OS X and Windows 7 on the computer using Boot camp.  I've neglected upgrading the software on the laptop for a while now because I just wasn't using the computer too much due to always using my work computer at the office and using an iPad for the miscellaneous stuff done at home.
Anyway, I first plan to fully upgrade the OS, firmware, all system updates before doing anything and then I would like to upgrade the RAM to 16 GB and potentially put an SSD in there.  My question is, can I put an SSD on there as the primary hard drive to really realize the booting speed advantages of an SSD.  And can I somehow clone my original hard drive so I can maintain my Windows 7 install on there as well.  The point of upgrading is that I'd like to get a home office setup going and need to run MS office apps, Factset, and Bloomberg natively on the windows side for work and also be able to log into Citrix to access work files and with my current setup this slows down the computer significantly.  Just wondering if I would run into any problems or if the SSD is not worth the trouble and I should just stick with the RAM upgrade.
    Thanks!

You can fit an SSD and there will be a significant performance increase.
I suggest that you first (using WinClone) clone the Windows installation to an image on the OSX partition, then (using CCC) clone the Mac partition to the SSD (assuming there is enough space). Then use WinClone to restore the Windows partition.

2º with ssd you recomend me? (im read Samsung evo 850 is good one crucial is good also)
3º any advice/special setup for linux?
    Thx. in advance.

Better to use MSI driver version at the very first time to make sure your system works well.  Then you can use brand online update feature, such as Nvidia, to get latest driver.
As for compatibility list, you can call local service center or use online service.
    And Linux topic:

Where do you live? Country only, please. I have heard that HP Service Centers will perform memory and SSD upgrades on these "closed" systems but I am not sure where all of them are located or what they would charge. You should be able to find a competent local computer shop to do it. It does put the warranty in jeopardy but the warranty will not be revoked if the job is done properly, without damage to the laptop.

Hello all, I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C55-B5299 and I would like to increase its RAM for better performance. On a few review sites, however, it is stated that the user is not able to upgrade the RAM in this laptop. So, is it possible to upgrade the RAM? I could not find any guides after searching for many days.  So I decided to go ahead and opened up the case.  It was quite simple. First I removed the two crews circled in the image below, pulled out the battery, press the power button to make discharge any remaining power. Then I removed the other screws (12 total).  Then pried out the cover piece starting from the corner where the power cord plugged in, and go around as showned by the arrows.  The pieces were held together by small clips, if you are carefull, I don't think you will break any of them.  I just add another piece of RAM, and it popped right in.  Not sure how hard it will be to replace the HDD.  I though Toshiba has their own RAM, but the one in there is a Kingstons (the blue piece in the picture below).  Maybe they sell refurb as new?  If you open your case and see a toshiba RAM, please let me know.  I installed a 8M in there with the original 4M.  OS reports 12M, but when I ran a few RAM tests using the app came with W8.1, the process hanged every time.  Maybe some compatible problems.  Hopefully, taking out the 4M will solve it. Hope this help.
