  • Refurbished Toshiba Satellite C55-A completely locks up/freezes

I've had this laptop for only two weeks and it is already giving me problems.I am running Windows 8 and since it's new the only things I have installed are a mozilla firefox browser and a program I use for online teaching. Last week on November 12 and today it completely froze. By that I mean even the cursor would not move and using ctr+alt+delete didn't work either. I've never seen a computer do that before. The only thing I can do is to power it off manually and restart it. It restarts fine after that.
The first time was while watching a youtube video. The video stopped and there was a loud buzzing from the speakers.
Today it happened while I was doing my online teaching. It completely locked up.
-I have already scanned the hardrive for errors, nothing came up.
-There are no updates for windows or toshiba
    - It's not getting unusually hot.
    - It is running on ac power.
    - The only anti-virus stuff I have is the trial norton software and the windows anti-virus software
    - When it happens, I'm not running a bunch of things at once.
It could possibly be an app. When I shut down my computer, it says that it can't shut down until one app closes but it doesn't say which one. It eventually closes it itself and powers off.
It's only happened twice but it should not be happening at all. I really don't want this to affect my job, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

You should only be running 1 Anti-Virus program. Running more than 1 at a time tends to cause conflicts.
Also, you gain more information from your freezes from your Event Viewer.
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > System > Event Viewer > (The first you should look at it is Applications to see if you have any Failed Buckets, or Critical Events)
(The second one you should look at is the System events, Any Stop errors and Critical errors) you should be able to obtain a fair amount of information on what is causing your freezes.)
If you need help reading the events, Right Click on Applications > Save All Events As > C55app
Right Click on System > Save All Events As >C55sys
You can ZIP them or use WinRAR to compress and send them via email.
Then send me a PM and I will provide and email address for you to send them to me and I will debug them for you.

  • Kensington Security Locks don't Fit into Kensington Security Slot

Hello all, I'm just about to go back to college and I have this new MBP. Considering my dorm is in an uptown manhattan brownstone, I'm kinda worried about my MBP's security. So I decided to use a cable lock as a mild theft deterrent when I leave to shower, etc. But the problem is, after all the Kensington security cables I've tried, none would fit, even though on the MBP's specs page, it says "Kensington cable lock slot" for security.
As you can read in these reviews, it seems that many people w/ MBPs can't get their cable locks to work:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?spart=T7229LL%2FA#re v
I have tried their keyed and combo locks, as well as trying a display port screw lock (but due to the design of the MBP's DVI port, the screw lock cannot mount), to no avail. Nothing will work.
So besides from ordering a locked down metal case or a safe (which will be quite tedious every time I need to go somewhere), what should I do? (And yes, I will have the software anti-theft things installed)

No, the lock comes with three seperate spacers that fit around the head of the lock where it fits into the computer, thus preventing the lock from moving on the computer and scratching the casing. The lock also included a 'base plate' which allows you to screw it into a desk, table, wall etc. if you have nothing that you could securely put the cable around.

  • Satellite C55-A and Ubuntu - Caps Lock and Num Lock key leds always off

I use Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 and Mate Desktop and LightDM. My Toshiba Laptop is Satellite C55-A-1JH (PSCG6E) model.
Cap Lock and Num Lock is working , but their leds always is off.
I don't find any Linux driver in Toshiba support web site. How I solve this problem?

Hi. Are you sure this is a Linux-issue? Please try this: reboot the unit and press F12 several times when the Toshiba logo is shown. When the boot menu is shown try Caps and Num lock again.
    Same issue or not?

  • Satellite C55-A-1N1 - How to repair Windows 8.1 after trying Linux?

    Hi,
    Laptop: Satellite C55-A-1N1
In my infinite wisdom I tried to install Linux in a dual boot scenario like my old laptop. I shrunk the main windows partition in windows 8.1 first and then installed linux to that partition. After rebooting, Linux worked but not windows since I had to disable secure boot and set bios to CSM for linux to load.
After putting secure boot back to on and bios to EFI, windows no longer boots. I tried to repair the windows operating system by running the repair tools from another Win8.1 DVD but they didn't repair the booting. I subsequently learned that holding zero at boot brings you to the hidden recovery partition.........except my doesn't!
So, I have checked the windows and recovery partitions are intact but I cannot get to the recovery partition or repair the windows installation with windows 8.1 repair tools. No, I don't have any backups, other images or system restore options. Clever, aren't I? I only have the original recovery partition (which I can't access) and windows partition to play with. I don't want to lose my OEM Windows 8.1 license...
Any ideas how to salvage this windows installation?
Thanks in advance for any help.

You have made the same mistake as many other people. On this forum we have discussed so many times how it works and tried to explain how all this works.
In users manuals is clearly described that every notebook owner should create recovery media (DVD or USB) and this created recovery media can be used for recovery image installation in case that HDD recovery option doesn't work or in case that HDD is defective and must be replaced.
As I can see you don't have this recovery media. Fact is that HDD recovery installation can be started if notebook has factory settings only. After your Linux experiment this option is gone and there is no way to start it again.
What you can do now? I know it sounds stupid now but if you want to install original recovery image you need to order new recovery media and it can be done on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

Instructions for changeing to from Windows 8 to windows 7.
    INSTRUCTIONS:
First - Burn recovery media before you make any changes! -You may want or need to go back to windows 8 later-
Update BIOS to newest bios version, the C55 and possibly other models will not support CSM boot mode with the older bios versions.
    Second -
Important Bios changes when changing from Windows 8 to Windows 7:
Completely shut down laptop (Shut down Windows 8 while pressing the Shift key to completely power off.) then restart computer and hold f2 when the screen goes black and wait for the bios setup utility to launch.
Select advanced, then system configuration, then boot mode
UEFI and CSM or legacy  (UEFI for Windows 8 and CSM or legacy for windows 7)
For windows 7 change to CSM or Legacy mode.
Third - Also in bios setup utility select - Security, then Secure Boot, then you have to disable secure boot for windows 7.
You will need to delete all partitions before installing windows 7 this is done forth step.
Forth - Insert your windows 7 disc and select custom install, your partitions should show up - click on each one and below you will see advanced drive options, click that and you will have options to format - format each one, then delete each one. You will be left with one raw partition, select to install and windows will do the rest while installing the operating system.
    Fifth - install drivers
    Installation order is important:
Install chipset driver then video driver before other drivers. Then install Toshiba Value added package before other applications

  • New MacMini and security lock

Looking at the new MacMini, I was pretty excited to see that it now has HDMI. However, I can not see any hole for a security lock. Did Apple forget that or is it hidden somewhere ? I am looking to buy this for usage in a public room and with that size, a security lock is quite imperative.
Thank you if you can answer this.

When I prepared to upgrade the RAM in my new Mini, the first thought that came to mind was "where's the Kensington security slot?" I proceeded to search every square inch of the computer for some kind of security measure and was stunned when I found nothing.
This, in combination with the increased starting price, is definitely not helpful with encouraging more Macs in kiosk situations. That said, less than $75 to secure the computer (presuming that's what the security device ends up selling for) isn't enough to be a deal breaker.
Despite the likeliness of a third-party solution, Apple should not have left off this important security feature. Even though the slot would not protect against RAM removal, it is still essential to preventing the loss of property.

  • Satellite C55-A-1RG (PSCJGE) does not boot anything?

I've just bought this model today and it came win no OS installed and now I'm trying to install something on it so I can use it.
The issue is that it doesn't want to boot anything. I've tried Win7, Windows8 from DVD and USB and also downloaded Ubuntu and that did not worked either.
I did went to BIOS (or EFI I guess it's called now) and changed the boot order to DVD -> USB -> HDD but to no use.
Also secure boot is disabled. I even tried pressing F12 key and when prompted with the boot menu I've selected DVD and same no result. I just get no boot media recognized.
Any idea if there's anything that I can do to use my laptop?
    Thanks.

In order to boot using UEFI from the Windows 7 installation media, try this procedure.
-Power on and press F2 while the Toshiba logo is displayed to enter the UEFI Setup Menu.
-Go to the Security tab and set the "Secure Boot" setting to "Disabled".
-Go to the Advanced tab, enter "System Configuration" and set the Boot Mode to "CSM Boot."
-Press F10 to save and exit.

  • Is there a Security Lock Cable available for iPad?

The Kensington security cable used for Apple laptops connects through a specific port. Does that Kensington cable also work for iPad? If not, is there a security cable for iPad?

YES! I found this iPad Security Case for a design client of mine who was concerned about theirs getting stolen.
Tryten Technologies shows them here: http://www.tryten.com/Apple-Mac-Security-Locks/iPad-Security-Case
You buy the iPad Security Case and you just need a standard "Kensington-style" security slot lock (which they sell online) and it's now secure.
It's totally worth it compared to losing your iPad. Went online yesterday and pre-ordered 5 online because they are taking pre-orders right now.
I hope I was of help.

  • Anybody use Kensington security lock on their iBook G4?

Don't know if this is the proper forum , but it was close as I could get.
Just bought the Kensington 64343, supposed to be one of the best security locks for portables. I have a 2005 iBook G4.
The top of the "t" goes in the slot but it can't rotate, in either direction. I've tried putting some (not a lot) pressure hoping the rubber bumper might depress a little so that the "t" could clear the case thickness, but to no avail. I've tried slightly tipping the barrel of the lock in case it wasn't "dead on" perpendicular, but no luck.
I'd be interested if anyone has tried this iBook with this lock and had success or failure.
    Thank you.
    Rich

I use them on some LaCie external HDs, they fit with a loose, rather insecure feeling,
and tried on my Intel iMac: feeling so tight, rotation occurs only thanks to the white iMac being plastic not aluminium.
Indeed a very poor quality for the price.
To think they still are better than the LaCie ones is even more disappointing...

  • Security lock is different from iBook G4?

I must have made a mistake in assuming that the security lock would be the same for both machines.
I switched from an iBook G4, and I can no longer use my old security lock cable. It isn't one of those cheapy Kensingtons, but it uses a real padlock (you insert a metal pair of 'scissors' into the slot, open them up to prevent being able to remove them, then put the lock through the hole in the 'scissors'). I'm sure there's a name for this lock style but I am unaware of what it is.
It worked flawlessly for my iBook G4, but it doesn't fit in my MacBook. I can barely get the 'scissors' to close, and when I do, they pull the plastic frame out, bending it.
Anyone else have this problem, or have a good, solid lock that they can recommend?

I have used a Kensington Microsaver which I have occasionally used with my previous compaq laptop, my old iBook G4 and my current MacBook without a problem.
I believe the standard for the lock is set by Kensington, so their locks should work with all notebooks.
I'm not sure which way the kensington lock is supposed to be insecure, but if you're referring to the 'pin tumbler bumping' lockpicking method, I believe the kensington should be unable to be picked this way. Then again, I'm no locksmith - and the lock is a bit unique.
As with most locks, the most important thing is to give the impression 'keep your hands off'. Notebook thieves don't want to raise suspicion by tampering with a lock at all.

  • Can i add ram to the existing ram on my Satellite C55-A5308

I got a C55-A5308 in a bundle about half a year ago. It came with 4GB RAM and I would like to have 8GB. I want to avoid having to replace my RAM, as that would save me $50 or so. Problem is I don't know if i can simply add 4Gb of RAM to what I already have. I know that is possible on some laptops but I am unsure about my model and Satellites in general. I don't want to waste $40 on 4GB when it turns out it won't fit. Would really appreciate the help
edit: Also if anyone could tell me the best memory cards to use that would be great

    Satellite C55-A5308 (PSCF6U-0E4066)
According to the spec above, you have two slots and only one is occupied. You can indeed add another 4 GB in the second slot.
See the section Adding memory (optional), which begins on p. 44 of the User's Guide.
       Satellite/Satellite Pro C40/C50/C70 - A Series User’s Guide
The spec suggests this module for your model.
       Toshiba PC3L-12800 DDR3/DDR3L-1600MHz Computer Memory Module - 4GB
You might also check the prices for Kingston's KTT-S3B/4G and KTT-S3C/4G, both of which are also recommended.

  • Kensington Lock Slot

So I'm going to college next year and want to get a lock slot for security. The guy in the store told me to get the lock slot I have to order it as a custom option online, but I'm not getting it as an option. So is it already included?

The "slot" is simply a hole in the MBP's case next to the optical drive slot. All MBPs have it, standard. The lock itself is something you need to buy separately.

  • Satellite C55-A-1MW wont start with new RAM inserted

    Hey .
I hope to find someone that can help me.. I've bought ram-memories and tried 4 different memories in my Satellite C55-A-1MW. But every ram card I insert makes the computer unable to start.. it will light up just to shut down again.
Is there some compability issue or anything? I've used 2 different aData Ram extensions car, 1 4gb and 1 2gb . the 4gb card was 1333 mhz and the 2gb card was 1600mhz. and i've tried 2 different corsair cards 4gb 1600mhz.
Is it something that makes it only able to extend the RAM with Toshibas own memories or is the second cardslot for RAM memory broken?

As I can see you use RAM modules with different specifications. Your problem is definitely RAM compatibility problem and you should use RAM modules with the same specification.
According notebook specification there are 4 memory slots and notebook can handle up to 32GB of RAM.
    Compatible RAM modules are:
    4GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M4G
    8GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M8G
Of course you can use modules from other manufacturers but please don't use some cheap products. I can recommend you usage of Kingston memory modules.

  • Satellite C55-A-1NU - RAM upgrade information and SSD upgrade

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A-1NU and I want to know if is possible to replace the optical drive with a SSD? Can anyone tell me what do I need to do? What kind of rack and SSD should I buy. Thanks
Also I want to improve the ram memory the laptop has only 1 slot 4 gb ddr3 1600 mhz but is single channel. What model should I buy to work in dual channel I use cpu z to identify the model and it shows me hmt451s6mfr8a do I need exactly this one or I can put 2 of other manufacture ty.

This upgrade with SSD is not supported by Toshiba so all you do is on your risk. Check please this forum. If Im remembering well some people have already posted own experiences.
I think in most cases they have ordered such HDD/SSD caddy but disc drive was not recognized at all.
In my opinion you should not do such upgrade.
    RAM
According notebook specification you can upgrade RAM up to 16 GB and at the bottom side under memory cover you should find two memory slots. How to upgrade RAM is described in users manuals. Check please page 72.
Compatible RAM modules for your notebook model are:
    4GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M4G
    8GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M8G
