Satellite C55-A5105 Wi-Fi is painfully slow, wireless LAN driver won't install

I've been bouncing around for solution on this issue of C55-A's and 8.1 having problems with slow Wi-Fi, and attempted to do the driver update. However, after downloading an extracting to it's own folder on my Desktop, I get to a point where it reads it cannot locate file C:\Users\<my username>\Desktop\<folder name>\Win8164\REALTEK Wirless LAN Driver.msi. If I retry, I get a 1706 error, no valid source could be found for product REALTEK Wireless LAN driver. I'm pretty certain I'm download the correct driver. I have run a check from Device Manager to see if the latest driver is installed, and I'm being told yes, so I can't figure out why speed is so slow still. This is my wife's laptop and it's barely used since we got in May, so we are a bit behind on Windows updates. Not sure that has anything to do with it. I've also disabled the Wireless card from being able to be powered down, another tip I found in this forum.

Hi Peter. I stumbled on this site and downloaded the driver they link to, followed their instructions, and see no improvement. I'm trying to break up the Windows Update downloads, and 84MB is a snail's pace. Do you have any info on what driver i should be updating exactly, and where that file may be?

Painfully slow wireless connection with Time Capsule

I have recently bought and changed over my home wireless to a Time Capsule 2TB, which I wanted for both the backup and the ease in home networking. I have set up the wireless network and since day one it has been painfully slow! I have created two wireless networks, one for 2.4GHz and the other for 5GHz. I have been reading all over the web and boards but to no avail. Any suggestions? I am about to give up on the time capsule completely! I couldn't even download my podcast tonight.

Firstly plug in directly by ethernet to be sure there isn't a network issue on wan side.
Are you testing on multiple computers .. Mac and/or PC?? Which ones. and what network cards are being used?
Try and remove anything that uses G wireless and throw away any B wireless. It will not work together with N even if it is an option.
Turn off the guest network if you have it on.
Have you used a wireless analyser like kismac or inssider for pc? Find the free channels and set the wireless to that. Use no security at first to test.. briefly.. and then select wpa2 personal. Is there any difference?
Do you have another wireless router running?? Were you using a different wireless router for comparison?

Slow Wireless LAN in Leopard

All right, I've spent the past 12 hours (on and off, of course) looking through all the threads in here, doing a lot of experimentation, and a bunch of clean installs and whatnots, and I've decided to start a new thread, since in many of the said threads, some people seemed to have similar issues, but the other issues in the same threads seem to be different problems, and it just becomes confusing when you try to trouble shoot something and people are talking about different problems.
So, this thread is specifically for people who satisfy these criteria under Leopard:
1) You're having issues with very slow file transfers in your *local network* when at least one end is connected wirelessly; that is to say, when both ends are connected to the router via ethernet, you see no problem at all.
2) Your wireless connection doesn't display problems when connecting to the internet.
3) It is not specifically an 802.11n issue; i.e., the problem can be duplicated when in Mixed b/g only mode and/or using an 802.11g router.
4) It's not a router connection issue; i.e., your wireless connection isn't being dropped, and you are able to find your AP and connect to it without any problems.
So basically, that more or less sums up my problem. My equipments:
MacBook Core2Duo 2.2GHz, 802.11b/g/n, OSX 10.5.2
iMac Core2Duo 2.13GHz, 802.11b/g/n, OSX 10.5.2
Router 1: TRENDnet TEW-631BRP (Draft N router), H/W V3.0R, FW v.1.0.3.7
Router 2: NETGEAR WGR614 v.5 (g), FW v.1.0.3_1.0.3
Internet: RCN Cable, 20Mbps/2Mbps
In my usual setup, the iMac is connected via Ethernet and the Macbook is connected wirelessly.
I know that this is a Leopard problem, but I'm not so sure it's a 10.5.2 specific problem. Let me explain.
I'd been using the TRENDnet more or less happily for the last couple of months. My iMac and Macbook have been in sync in terms of Leopard versions, so I know things were OK till last night when I first noticed problems. Transferring a large video file from the iMac to the Macbook would start off fine, then really slow down, and finally almost completely halt. Naturally, I blamed 10.5.2.
After trying all the different "fixes" in the Leopard/network related threads with no avail, I tried booting my laptop into Tiger (10.4.11) installed on an external HDD. Voila, wireless file transfer speed is fast at around 8MB/sec (obviously using N). I did a fresh install of 10.5, and the speed immediately dropped down to 1-2MB/sec, although not necessarily stalling. Then, updating to 10.5.2 slowed it down more, and now the transfers will sooner or later almost completely stall.
Again, I tried all the suggested remedies (use b/g Only mode, adjust RTS/Fragmentation thresholds, use WEP instead of WPA, delete all the Network Services in System Preferences -> Network, etc., etc.). Nothing helps. I tried swapping the router to an older Netgear (802.11g/b), and it's the same deal, so it's not a router issue.
A definite characteristic is that the transfer seems to stall after a certain period of sustained transferring; i.e., this will usually only happen when transferring large files (>200MB). If I were to download a folder with 600 JPEG files @ 1MB each, there won't be a problem, and the transfer rate will be pretty fast (although not as fast as under Tiger @ 7-8MB/sec), and it won't stall. It's only when I try to transfer big video files, etc., that this problem occurs.
If you are having similar issues, please share your experiences, suggest remedies, offer insights. I will try to answer any question you may have and that I may have missed to address.

I'll concur, network streaming since 10.5.X is painful at best and has gotten worse with every dot release. Apple, I've spent thousands of dollars on your equipment in the 13 years I've been using it and this is unacceptable.
Here's the home network for reference:
12MB uplink to Internet via Cox Cable --> brand new (yesterday) Airport Extreme (to replace a Linksys WRT 54G, which I had originally suspected was the culprit) 100MB Ethernet to Core 2 (single) Mac Mini. Media lives on a Lacie 500GB RAID1 array connected via Firewire 400. The Mini shares out to a Macbook Core 2 Duo @ 2GhZ, Airport Extreme and an iMac Core 2 Duo @ 2.16GhZ.
Movies stutter and die when streaming to the MacBook or the iMac, regardless of codec. The iTunes application can no longer stream mp3s from my shared library (on the Lacie array) to either of those two machines without constant rebuffering.
I have verified the Lacie array isn't suspect by copying known good (by test play on the Mini) files from it to the Desktop on the Mini and streaming from there. I've verified the MacBook and iMac aren't suspect by copying those same known good files to the Desktop on each and playing from there. I don't have issues opening a connection from one machine to any other on the network, but any sustained connection is an issue, regardless of networking protocol (AFP, SMB) or connection\authentication method (Finder sidebar or "Connect to Server" dialog.)
Apple, you have an obligation to your customers to resolve this. I've been a networking professional for 17 years and setting up the Airport Extreme was far from a challenge.

10.4.8 - Slow Wireless LAN

After updating my system to 10 I have had 2 major problems:
1st: My MBP wouldn't boot at all... I searched for something usefull on the Mac OS 10.4.5 disc - which didn't work at all... However - this problem is (for some reason) gone now...
2nd: This is the actual problem: My wireles connection really slowed down - it actually is impossible to use it!
- All the others within our network (Windows-powered) do NOT have any problems
- Also accessing the router's (Siemens SX553 WLAN dsl) setuppage is slow, it takes about 1 minute to load the splashpage.
- I did NOT have any problems with my AirPort
- Using the built-in Ethernet connecion works great
As I'm living within Germany, I cannot visit an Apple Store...
Any ideas? Is there a possibility of re-installing an old OS (for example using the Mac OS Install disk shipped with my MBP) or "downdating" 10.4.8?

You can try deleting the PLIST in library/systemconfiguration/preferences and then delete com.apple.airport prefs. This has improved the performance on mine but not resolved the issue fully

Satellite L300-15V - The system cannot install Wireless LAN driver

After installed all drivers for that machine, the system shows that it need to install Wireless LAN driver, but i did!!! What's going on? Help! I can't make wireless net home!!!!!!

I assume you have tried to install the Realtek WLan driver. Is it right?

All programs seam to work except HWsetup. Flashcards show up when using special function keys except for the volume, the volume special function keys work to turn volume up and down but you don’t see the flash cards, and of course there is no recovery partition so the recovery media creator cannot burn recovery media.

Instructions for changeing to from Windows 8 to windows 7.
INSTRUCTIONS:
First - Burn recovery media before you make any changes! -You may want or need to go back to windows 8 later-
Update BIOS to newest bios version, the C55 and possibly other models will not support CSM boot mode with the older bios versions.
Second -
Important Bios changes when changing from Windows 8 to Windows 7:
Completely shut down laptop (Shut down Windows 8 while pressing the Shift key to completely power off.) then restart computer and hold f2 when the screen goes black and wait for the bios setup utility to launch.
Select advanced, then system configuration, then boot mode
UEFI and CSM or legacy (UEFI for Windows 8 and CSM or legacy for windows 7)
For windows 7 change to CSM or Legacy mode.
Third - Also in bios setup utility select - Security, then Secure Boot, then you have to disable secure boot for windows 7.
You will need to delete all partitions before installing windows 7 this is done forth step.
Forth - Insert your windows 7 disc and select custom install, your partitions should show up - click on each one and below you will see advanced drive options, click that and you will have options to format - format each one, then delete each one. You will be left with one raw partition, select to install and windows will do the rest while installing the operating system.
Fifth - install drivers
Installation order is important:
Install chipset driver then video driver before other drivers. Then install Toshiba Value added package before other applications

2 years ago, I bought 3 of these laptops for my granddaugter, my son, and myself. Mine is still operating, with many difficulties, and 2 new batteries, but the other two quit a long time ago. I'll keep this one until it quits, too, but I will never buy another Toshiba product, ever!

Cannot connect to wireless internet - WLAN card not installed - Satellite Pro M10

Hi, i have just been given a second hand toshiba satellite pro M10 and i have just rebuilt it and put windows xp home edition on it. What i would like to be able to do is to connect to my families wireless network so that i can get rid of all the cables on the floor. My laptop seems to think that there is no wireless card installed though. Now i had the same problem with the cable lan, but i went onto tosibas website and downloaded a patch and updated the driver in device manager. I am not able to do this with the wireless as there are no drivers to download for it and there is apparently no device for it in device manager. Could somebody please help me and tell me what to do and how i can download a patch or fix the problem. Thanks, Andrew Reid

I think youve got an Intel Lan card and this Vista Lan driver could be installed automatically using the Vista update function.
So it maybe you could establish the internet connection using the WLan and then you could run the Vista updates.

Satellite C55-B5355 Wifi intermittent connection, slow connection

I have a Satellite C55-B5355 with and Artheros Wifi chipset. Bought this about 6 months ago. Wifi for some reason has stopped wsorking well. Break connection to the netork intermittently. Very slow when trying to access. Downloaded and installed the latest driver from Toshiba, no good. Also tried settings in power profile so it's not turned off byt he system, but still no go. Tried Safe Mode with network loaded, no go. I've plugged it in direct to the router with a LAN cable and it works fine, so it's definitely a Wifi issue. This was working, strangely it's not now and nothing was essentially changed ont he system save for routine Windows updates. I noted that several others on the community boards have had similar issue with the Artheros Wifi. Anyone know what the story is?? Disappointed that this would happen one a new laptop. I've owned Toshiba's before with no issues. this is frustrating.

Guys, I just fix this problem. Don't know if it's gonna work for all of you but can give it a try.As I mentioned before, I own a L855-S5371 with a RTL8188CE wireless card. Windows 8.1 up to date.Tried many drivers from MS and Realtek without any luck until...I changed my router. Somehow my some-years-old laptop it's not compatible with this Cable modem router I have now.I must clarify, the router works OK for all other devices except my laptop.I linked an old router to the actual Cable modem router and everything works perfect now. There are some compatibility issues with these kind of routers since in my gf's house I have the exact same problem. The thing is that I had this router BEFORE without any problem. So maybe a Windows Update patch must be the culprit.Hope this helps for you guys.Keep it safe.

Hi I recently bought a new laptop toshiba satellite C55-A with windows 8 on it. My older laptop runs super fast with my WIFI internet. The new one goes like SLOW like hell. I mean I have 10 MB internet and it goes like 500 K Please I am really tired of looking on Internet to fix a problem of a NEW computer. Plus, once I plug my computer with the Internet wire it RUNS on 10 MB! THANK YOU!

Hello! I also recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite C55t-A.
We have a desktop computer that is about 3 years old and another laptop that is about 6 years old. We have an apple Ipad and 2 cell phones with wifi. All of these devices work with our WIFI from our cable internet at high speeds.
This new computer is so slow using Wifi that it isn't really feasable to use it for surfing the web.
It has ran slow on WIFI straight out of the box...nothing has changed on it. We perhaps should have returned it, but it was purchased for a specific project we needed it for on a time deadline, so it was too inconvenient to return it. After using it for the project, it was past the return date.
Anyways, I am hoping this is fixable...we would like to be able to use the laptop for online work.
This problem isn't related to the position in the house (walls or distance) or the integrity/age of the router. All other devices work at different points throughout our home with the current router. This is the only computer that will not run at an acceptable WIFI speed.
We also cannot restore the computer (it worked this way out of the box and there are too many files (hours of work) that we can't lose.
Please, I would appreciate if there is any info that could help me. I suspect some type of driver or software that came installed on the laptop must not be compatible with our router.

Satellite C55-A-1N2 - Windows is broken and no access to repair option

Hello,
A friend of mine got a Satellite C55-A-1N2 brand new from november 2013 with windows 8.1.
The serial number is: yd344983s
At the beginning, there was a wifi issue.
I found lot of adware...
I uninstall most of them by hand, and clean everything with adwcleaner.
The portable works fine, i switch off the DNS client service and add anti-pupsadware in hosts file to prevent any new adwares installation.
All was ok and give it back to friend.
But at the next start up, windows was slow, unable to connect wifi, enter config panel, do anything actually.
I tried according to manual, to press F8 and power on, but that just switch on to windows login.
I tried also F12, and tried to use windows seven CD with no success.
Do you have any ideas of what i can do ?

As i said in the first post, it was no possible to do lot of things apart login, so set the option for full power off was not possible.
I manage to access to bios using F2, but was not useful (just play with CMS vs UEFI, normal boot speed ...)
Nothing to lose, i tried the "0" that lead me to HDD Recovery for a full reset.
Manual said that it will erase eveything, but actually user & documents are still here.
Now that it works fine, i set the option for full power off for more tests and acknowledgment :
- The F12 works, HDD recovery or bootable devices choice. Ok
- The 0 still lead to HDD recovery. Ok
- The F8 still does nothing ... ??!! Strange !
So manual are not very accurate on this model, *but my job is done and i did recovery dvds for next time.*

Hey everyone. I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow. I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1: It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1. For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems. So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine. Is that possible? Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2: It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets. A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable. I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer? Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.

I pulled this part out of one of the topics Barney-15E linked to. It absolutely works! The glacially slow Finder response has been driving me batty in Mavericks. Each time I restarted, it would take forever to list the startup drive when I opened it. Open and Save dialogues were also painfully slow to respond. Now they all snap open and list instantly. I used TextWrangler to comment out the line in the file auto_master, then ran the automount command in Terminal.
Working workaround:
Use the following statements in Terminal.
sudo vi /etc/auto_master
In this file comment out /net with # (#/net .....)
sudo automount -vc
Fixed.

Couple of notes:
(1) Some folks may be more comfortable using a GUI editor like TextWrangler instead of vi
     a) in the Finder use the GO menu and select Go to Folder
     b) type '/etc' ( without single quotes ) in the Go to folder dialog box and press the Go button
     c) Right ( Control ) click the auto_master file in the resulting Finder window. Select "Open with...." and use TextWrangler ( your choice )
     d) Comment out the line by inserting a '#' ( pound sign ) as noted in Snaggletooth_DE's instructions
     e) Save the file ( probably need to authenticate with your admin password )
     f) Do the 'sudo automount -vc' per Snaggletooth_DE's instructions. Will need to authenticate again.
(2) Notice Snaggletooth_DE described this as a "workaround" because it bypasses an Apple bug. Presumably most people have not changed their auto_master file and it worked fine in Mountain Lion and prior. In other words: If you haven't done so already, please continue to submit feedback and bug reports to Apple for this issue.
Kudos to Snaggletooth_DE for figuring out code is trying to look at network ( NFS ) volumes that maybe don't exist.

My MacBook Pro is running painfully slow all of a sudden. I am trying to clean up my iPhoto library and it's all of a sudden running really slow. I've uninstalled and disabled as many unnecessary apps as possible as far as I can tell.
