Satellite C55 hangup on intiial set up

I have a new Windows 8.1 Satellite C55-A-1N1. Was going through the initial set up and it seems to have hung up. I got past setting up microsoft account, connected to my WiFi, got to the point where it said it was installing/updating software, it rebooted itself and carried on with updates, then hungup with a plain screen with no messages and a rotating spinning circle.
Light on front indicates it's still connected to WiFi.
Has been like this for over 2 hours.
Any ideas anyone?

I worked out how to get over this. After several hours of the spinning wheel, and wondering if this was part of the initial setup, I tried ctrl/alt/del, and it put up a menu of choices. I clicked on sign-out, and it took me back to the Windows 8.1 login screen. I logged in and everything seems to be OK.
I can only assume that at the end of the initial setup it decided to go into what used to be called hourglass mode.
Hitting return, left mouse button or right mouse button didn't get me out of this, but ctrl/alt/del seems to be the answer should anyone else hit this problem.

    Hi
Just got my new Toshiba Satellite C55-A-1UE turned it on for 1st time and went through the internet set up, account set up etc. Then it said it was loading software and please wait do not turn off.
I have been sat for over 30 minutes waiting and all I have is a circle going round n round like its loading. Seems an awful long time for it to set up - can anyone advise?

    >I have been sat for over 30 minutes waiting and all I have is a circle going round n round like its loading. Seems an awful long time for it to set up - can anyone advise?
Well, during the first configuration, the Toshiba image has to be setup and all necessary updates has to be downloaded and installed. This takes time.
However, it could be possible that the system would not response anymore and in such case you should simply power OFF the notebook and should reboot it again.
Usually the system would start the configuration from the point of interruption

  • Satellite C55-A-1N1 - How to repair Windows 8.1 after trying Linux?

    Hi,
    Laptop: Satellite C55-A-1N1
In my infinite wisdom I tried to install Linux in a dual boot scenario like my old laptop. I shrunk the main windows partition in windows 8.1 first and then installed linux to that partition. After rebooting, Linux worked but not windows since I had to disable secure boot and set bios to CSM for linux to load.
After putting secure boot back to on and bios to EFI, windows no longer boots. I tried to repair the windows operating system by running the repair tools from another Win8.1 DVD but they didn't repair the booting. I subsequently learned that holding zero at boot brings you to the hidden recovery partition.........except my doesn't!
So, I have checked the windows and recovery partitions are intact but I cannot get to the recovery partition or repair the windows installation with windows 8.1 repair tools. No, I don't have any backups, other images or system restore options. Clever, aren't I? I only have the original recovery partition (which I can't access) and windows partition to play with. I don't want to lose my OEM Windows 8.1 license...
Any ideas how to salvage this windows installation?
Thanks in advance for any help.

You have made the same mistake as many other people. On this forum we have discussed so many times how it works and tried to explain how all this works.
In users manuals is clearly described that every notebook owner should create recovery media (DVD or USB) and this created recovery media can be used for recovery image installation in case that HDD recovery option doesn't work or in case that HDD is defective and must be replaced.
As I can see you don't have this recovery media. Fact is that HDD recovery installation can be started if notebook has factory settings only. After your Linux experiment this option is gone and there is no way to start it again.
What you can do now? I know it sounds stupid now but if you want to install original recovery image you need to order new recovery media and it can be done on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

  • Cannot use the F1-12 functions on my Satellite C55-A-19K

    Hello there
Satellite C55-A-19K have an keyboard drivers?
I cannot use the F1-12 functions and cannot get the wireless on since its on the keyboard...
    Can some 1 help please?

    Hi
The basic setting on these models is that the special functions on the [F1]-[F12] keys are used without [FN].
So for example activating / deactivating the touchpad is done from [F5] (not [FN] [F5])
It is also possible to change this behaviour. Setting the Function-keys to traditional mode in the BIOS will revert back to the keys used along with [FN].
So activating / deactivating the touchpad in traditional function key mode, requires [FN] [F5].
So be sure to check your function key behavoiur - if you have set it to use [FN] first or not.
And keep in mind that in case the current mode is not what you want, you may change it.
    Hope this helps

  • Satellite C55-A-1RG (PSCJGE) does not boot anything?

I've just bought this model today and it came win no OS installed and now I'm trying to install something on it so I can use it.
The issue is that it doesn't want to boot anything. I've tried Win7, Windows8 from DVD and USB and also downloaded Ubuntu and that did not worked either.
I did went to BIOS (or EFI I guess it's called now) and changed the boot order to DVD -> USB -> HDD but to no use.
Also secure boot is disabled. I even tried pressing F12 key and when prompted with the boot menu I've selected DVD and same no result. I just get no boot media recognized.
Any idea if there's anything that I can do to use my laptop?
    Thanks.

In order to boot using UEFI from the Windows 7 installation media, try this procedure.
-Power on and press F2 while the Toshiba logo is displayed to enter the UEFI Setup Menu.
-Go to the Security tab and set the "Secure Boot" setting to "Disabled".
-Go to the Advanced tab, enter "System Configuration" and set the Boot Mode to "CSM Boot."
-Press F10 to save and exit.

  • Satellite C55-A-1L0 won't start into Windows 8

    Hey guys.
I hope you can help me a little.
I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-A-1L0 here and it won't start into Windows 8.
I turn it on, the Toshiba welcoming screen appears, then I get a message on a black screen saying "checking media (fail)" and after a little while "no bootable device. Please restart"
I checked the BiOS and it doesn't seem to see the Hard Disk (says HDD- none) and even in the list of boot order I get a list with the DVD drive with exact name but for HDD not.
I tried to do a recocery with the F12 button and I get the list to choosw from where I want to boot but selecting harddisk doesn't work.
So I thought I'd try a linux live distribution to see where my hard disk is and to save my data (after some settings in the BIOS - boot mode CMS) but I cannot find it there too. (I have a mtab and fstab file, would it help if I posted it in here?)
Is my HDD broken? Can I try something else?
    Thanks a lot!

This notebook model is pretty new and I presume with valid warranty so I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.
Using diagnostic tools they can check if problem is HDD or HDD controller.
On this virtual way we cannot say for sure what the problem is. In my opinion you should not waste your time because you cannot do much if there is hardware related issue.
Last step you can try is to set BIOS to default settings and check it again.

2 years ago, I bought 3 of these laptops for my granddaugter, my son, and myself.  Mine is still operating, with many difficulties, and 2 new batteries, but the other two quit a long time ago.  I'll keep this one until it quits, too, but I will never buy another Toshiba product, ever!

    Hi
    What is your BIOS version?
The latest BIOS for the Satellite C55-A PSCGAE is the version 1.30-WIN

I have a new laptop barley used. I bought this back in August then bam in January it started giving me this error message "Reboot and select proper Boot Device".
I'd like to get this fixed so I can start using it again. I tried pressing f2 on restart and when it powers up it says

Is there something specific I should do to get this running again?

it started giving me this error message "Reboot and select proper Boot Device".
It is not finding or communicating with the hard drive to boot, most of the time it is a bad hard drive or bios is not set correctly for the operating system.
f2 to enter the bios then f9 to set bios to the defaults, then f10 to save - then try to start.
What you are saying the bios reads is wierd?

  • Touchpad freezes and won't work. satellite c55

I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-B5272 and from day one the touchpad on this thing as sucked and it is so frustrating. The most annoying thing it will do, is the cursor will just freeze up and then I have to wait for a minute so that it can figure itself out, and then it will do it again shortly there after. I am running windows 7 64 bit, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been having a similar problem - Also since the time I first purchased the machine.  I have a C55 Dt - B5208.  It always works fine when using the mouse or the touch screen but the touch pad does crazy things that drive me crazy.  At times I want to toss it out a window.  It freeses frequently, It usually starts by moving iratically when sliding my finger acros it the curser will either stop or jump.  It almost seems as if the touch pad becomes less sensitive and its harder for it to detect my finger. Then it freezes.  Some times - but not all the time, the curser dissappears.  I set the target so when that happens I hit the control button to see if I ran it off the screen but it is still on the screen.  After 30 seconds or so it starts working again.  The curser just re-appears and moves fine - until the next time.  It seems to do this more often when I first start working with the machine and less frequently the longer I work with it.  I have been unable to figure this out.  It is not from anything that I have installed as it did this right from the box.

  • Satellite C55-A-1N2 - Windows is broken and no access to repair option

    Hello,
A friend of mine got a Satellite C55-A-1N2 brand new from november 2013 with windows 8.1.
    The serial number is: yd344983s
At the beginning, there was a wifi issue.
    I found lot of adware...
I uninstall most of them by hand, and clean everything with adwcleaner.
The portable works fine, i switch off the DNS client service and add anti-pupsadware in hosts file to prevent any new adwares installation.
All was ok and give it back to friend.
But at the next start up, windows was slow, unable to connect wifi, enter config panel, do anything actually.
I tried according to manual, to press F8 and power on, but that just switch on to windows login.
I tried also F12, and tried to use windows seven CD with no success.
Do you have any ideas of what i can do ?
    That looks pretty bad.
    Thanks.
    Mickael
    France.

I dont know how to access that blue menu
    > As mentioned by Keany, you have to completely power OFF the system. The point is that Win 8 as well as Win > 8.1 do not power off the notebooks but set it to hybrid shut down mode in order to speed up the system boot > process.
As i said in the first post, it was no possible to do lot of things apart login, so set the option for full power off was not possible.
I manage to access to bios using F2, but was not useful (just play with CMS vs UEFI, normal boot speed ...)
Nothing to lose, i tried the "0" that lead me to HDD Recovery for a full reset.
Manual said that it will erase eveything, but actually user & documents are still here.
Now that it works fine, i set the option for full power off for more tests and acknowledgment :
    - The F12 works, HDD recovery or bootable devices choice. Ok
    - The 0 still lead to HDD recovery. Ok
    - The F8 still does nothing ... ??!! Strange !
So manual are not very accurate on this model, *but my job is done and i did recovery dvds for next time.*
    Thanks.

Instructions for changeing to from Windows 8 to windows 7.
    INSTRUCTIONS:
First - Burn recovery media before you make any changes! -You may want or need to go back to windows 8 later-
Update BIOS to newest bios version, the C55 and possibly other models will not support CSM boot mode with the older bios versions.
    Second -
Important Bios changes when changing from Windows 8 to Windows 7:
Completely shut down laptop (Shut down Windows 8 while pressing the Shift key to completely power off.) then restart computer and hold f2 when the screen goes black and wait for the bios setup utility to launch.
Select advanced, then system configuration, then boot mode
UEFI and CSM or legacy  (UEFI for Windows 8 and CSM or legacy for windows 7)
For windows 7 change to CSM or Legacy mode.
Third - Also in bios setup utility select - Security, then Secure Boot, then you have to disable secure boot for windows 7.
You will need to delete all partitions before installing windows 7 this is done forth step.
Forth - Insert your windows 7 disc and select custom install, your partitions should show up - click on each one and below you will see advanced drive options, click that and you will have options to format - format each one, then delete each one. You will be left with one raw partition, select to install and windows will do the rest while installing the operating system.
    Fifth - install drivers
    Installation order is important:
Install chipset driver then video driver before other drivers. Then install Toshiba Value added package before other applications

  • Windows 7 installation on Satellite C55-A-1HN

    Hi
Hope someone can help me. I bought a Toshiba Satellite C55-A-1HN laptop which has Windows 8 on and Im wanting to put Windows 7 on the laptop but keep getting a error saying checking media fail then booting back to Windows 8.
I want Windows 7 on cause I cant get away with Windows 8.
    Ty for reading this

    Hello
At first you must check if your notebook model is supported for Win7 and if Win7 drivers, tools and utilities are offered for download.
Check it please on Toshiba download page http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
Before you do anything create recovery media using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator. It will be Win8 recovery media. One day if you want to have original factory settings again use this disc for recovery image installation. After recovery media creation you can start with Win7 OS installation.
How to do this check please http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2C03F80002R01.htm

  • Cannot find my Satellite C55-A-19K on Toshiba page

    Hi everybody
I bought a laptop TOSHIBA Sattellite from a supermarket, but when I wanted to download the drivers from TOSHIBA official site, I did not find my pc in the list of drivers or in any page of the site, even with the automatic detection, knowing that reference of the laptop is TOSHIBA Satellite C55-A-19K.
Now I want to know is that normal, or am I a victim of an imitation product.

As I can see this notebook model was delivered without preinstalled operating system so I presume you want to find drivers, tools and utilities on Toshiba download page - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
Your notebook model is listed there but you must watch which criteria you must choose. As you can see you cannot search for C55-A-19K but for Satellite C55-A with part number PSCG8E.
    Please check it again.

I went back to Best Buy and tested headphones on the floor model of the computer I purchased. It has the exact same problem-LOUSY headphone sound.I can't believe Toshiba put out bad hardware-it has to be the RealTek driver, which is specific for this Toshiba laptop.I actually downloaded and installed the generic driver from the RealTek website, and suddenly the RealTek card was MISSING in the Device Manager list.So I reinstalled the Toshiba driver, and I'm back to square one.
