Satellite C660-2EL wont boot

Hi guys,
after a few solid days of frustration here I am.
I'm working on a friends Satellite C660-2EL
It was stuck in the endless Win 7 boot loop and would not be recovered by any means.
So I decided a format was the way to go.
After the format using partition magic everything was going smoothly.
I reinstalled Win 7 and the setup was also going fine. Once the setup was completed and it did a restart I decided to pop into the BIOS and amend the boot order as I had set it to CD drive first. So after changing the settings then saving and exiting the damn thing refuses to boot at all now, not from CD HD or anything else.
The toshiba screen flashes up but when I hit F2 now it just freezes saying entering setup.
When I try to hit F12 the screen goes back to the blinking curser.
If I press nothing I get the blank screen with the curser.
I saw a video on you tube for resetting the CMOS, I've tried this with no luck.
Any ideas guys?

You are not able to access the BIOS???
Damn :( this does not look very good
Did you check RAM?? No? Remove the modules and try to boot up the unit using one module in each slot. Test both modules
But since you tried to reset the CMOS (not sure how you did it) it could be possible that your motherboard is already damaged.
This means that new mobo is required and this is expensive part

  • My Satellite C660-155 wont boot up

My Toshiba Satellite C660-155 laptop wont boot up. When i turn it on i get a blinking "-" in top left corner, then the screen goes black and nothing happens after this. It is over a year old which means it is past its warranty.
This has happened before, about 4 or 6 weeks ago, a friend fixed but it has now returned to the black screen.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For better understanding you must offer more precise information.
Can you enter Advanced boot optionsusing F8 at start-up?
Is option Repair my computer listed there?
Can you start OS in safe mode?
    Have you created recovery disc?

  • Satellite C50-A634 wont boot from USB or DVD

My new toshiba Satellite C50-A634 wont boot from usb, or dvd ,
i have downloaded win 8.1 and burn image to dvd but i still get an error message "no bootable device......please restart system" .
    Can some one plz help?

    Hi
Does Satellite C50-A634 supports internal CD/DVD drive or did you try to boot from external optical disk drive?
You have to know that _Satellite C50 & Satellite C50D models *without* a built-in ODD_ are not able to boot from an external ODD due to a technical limitation.
    Details here:
[Limitation of external boot media for Satellite, Satellite Pro C50 & C50D devices|http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB3B03JA0000R01.htm]
Only USB flash drives are supported as external boot devices!
It is necessary you can use a USB flash drive as recovery media on notebooks without a built-in ODD.

  • Satellite C660-2EL turned off - wouldn't turn back on but now

I hope this is the right place to put this. I have a Toshiba Satellite C660-2EL and last night it powered off with no warning, no nothing. It wouldn't turn back on at all, it just sort of made this noise like it was dying a slow death and had the green light etc, but then turned back off again, I did notice my battery had come lose (something that happens occasionally) so I put it back in, and tried again, nothing.
I also tried again with my charger in and everything in place, this time there was a flashing orange light, no green light and a really horrific squeaky type noise. Now, come this morning, I decided to try it all again and it's working? *Anyone know what this might of been?*
I have insurance and I'm thinking of just taking it to them because of this and seeing what they think, as this is the second time this has happened, though the first time, it never turned back on and according to Toshiba it had water damage and was therefore my fault and I had to send it to the normal place for it to be fixed.
    Thanks all!

    > according to Toshiba it had water damage and was therefore my fault and I had to send it to the normal place for it to be fixed.
Your described problem sounds definitely like it would be hardware related problem.
It seems an technician has checked the unit and it was an water damage
Possibly the motherboard is affected or an RAM slot/module i think only technician can provide an exact diagnosis after the hardware has been checked.

  • Satellite C660 fails to boot first time

    I have a Satellite C660 - PSC0AQ-03C019 + 1B194392K
For the last year the notebook has been running fine however in the last 2 months it has had a boot issue. The first attempted boot of the day, it will not boot, it powers on gets past the boot screens past the blinking cursor top left then stalls with a blank screen (not cursor just a faint glow).
Pressing and holding the power button turning it off and then turning on again the computer will start. sometimes (not always ) it will ask to boot normally or repair.
The notebook works perfectly in use not errors not crashes. Restarting the notebook works as expected shutting down and powering on after 5 mins works fine.
If the notebook is left off for an hour it or more it will not boot the same as above. powering off and powering on the system will boot but with start normally question.
There are no errors shown in system logs
I have performed a full system reinstall from HDD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD on to a brand new hard drive recovery.
    I have replaced the ram
I have attempted to update the bios but get an error
    Bios version above 200
    Battery capacity more than 10%
    AC is attached

Thanks for your suggestions. Just to clarify what is happening and what I have done so far.
Every time the Satellite C660 notebook is turned on when it has been sitting turned off for more than an hour it will not boot.
    Power on goes like this
The Toshiba splash screen comes up
The blinking cursor on the top left appears then disappears
The screen goes blank (noticeably on still, but blank)
No matter how long it is left it stays at this screen
    The above has happens so
I press and hold the power button to turn it off
Press to turn the notebook back on - one out of three times it states the system failed to start - offering boot to safe mode or turn on normally
Pressing boot normally the computer will boot successfully
The Satellite C660 will run perfectly with no errors, failures or crashes
Reboot the Satellite C660 it will restart and boot correctly
Turn the notebook off and leave it for an hour and it will not boot.
I have scanned the original HDD and it has no errors or issues
I have performed a full system reinstall using manufacturers HDD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD on to a brand new hard drive recovery.
I have tested the brand new HDD no errors
I have replaced the RAM memory
There are no errors shown in system logs
I have set the BIOS to defaults
I have set the boot order to boot from HDD first
I have not been able to update the BIOS as when the Toshiba update or manual download and attempt to update the BIOS fails.
On a restart the computer boots as normal
When booting for the first time of the day or if the computer is off for an hour or more it will not boot into Windows

  • Satellite C660 won't boot to disc or USB

My Toshiba Satellite C660-DSC0QE, running BIOS version 1.80, won't boot into Windows any more - it just goes to the dreaded black screen with white cursor.
I've tried a Win 7 system recovery disc, a USB stick with Kaspersky recovery software on it, and even a full Win 7 installation disc, and it won't boot to any of them.
The boot order is set correctly, the devices (optical drive or USB port) do get read, but they never actually boot into them - there's either an obscure error message or it acts like they weren't there at all.
The obvious answer from these forums seems to be to turn off secure boot mode and to then switch the boot mode from UEFI to CSM. Easier said than done - those menu options don't exist at all in my BIOS/CMOS screens.
Finally, I don't see a way in the instructions to get a BIOS update to happen without being in Windows on the PC already - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9502M10000R01.htm I'm assuming BIOS version 2.00 would have these options.
    Any help gratefully accepted!

    Hi
I assume youve got an white, blinking cursor in the left upper corner.
    Is this correct?
Such symptoms appear in case the system cannot find a bootable device (HDD) or in case of memory (RAM module) problems.
First of all you said that you dont have UEFI / CSM boot mode in the BIOS settings.
So Im asking you what boot mode settings do appear in BIOS exactly?
Did you search for these settings in the right area?
Usually you should have in BIOS an area (tab) called security.
In most cases there you will find secure boot option but the Satellite C660 does not support such option because its too old.
But boot mode (UEFI /CSM) should be available in BIOS. Check the BIOS area System settings
Anyway, as I said above; it could be also an memory issue therefore I would recommend you to check if memory is OK.

  • Satellite P100-240 wont boot up after failed BIOS update

Hi, let me just start by saying im an idiot....
Dowloaded a few drivers for my toshiba p100 240 and noticed there was a BIOS update, i downloaded it and ran the program only for it to come up with
an error that it will only allow the Administrator to run program. My laptop became slow and would not allow me to turn it off by any means. In the end i took out the
battery and restarted only to find a blank screen, no start up or anything on screen.
I fear i have totally killed my machine and its about 4 months out of warrenty, Im sure there is no cheap miricle cure for this but if anyone can give me my options here I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks for your time,
    Martin.

    Hi mate,
Thats a bit of a problem... If your machine really wont boot up and no screen comes up, then your BIOS was probably damaged.
I would really recommend you to contact an [authorized service partner|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_whitepaper.jsp?service=EU&WHITEPAPER_ID=0 000000871] and tell them your problem. Maybe they can do something for. I mean, your machines hardware is ok, and its just some BIOS related thing.
Hope your machine will work again..

  • Satellite A105-S2001 wont boot after memory upgrade

I just tried to upgrade my memory from 512mb to 2 gb using 2 1gb memory chips from crucial. When i insert both memory chips at the same time my laptop wont boot, it'll attempt to but stop in the middle of the process and try again 5 or 6 times. Nothin shows up on the screen. The same thing happens when i put only one 1gb chip in. When i put my old 512mb chip in and one 1gb chip the computer boots but only recognizes 960mb or ram. i also updated my bios.
    thanks

Sounds like incompatible memory.  Fortunately, Crucial is very good about honoring their compatibility guarantee so you should be able to get them exchanged.  You can get very strange results with incompatible chips due to the differences in timing specs.  That would account for what you're seeing.  I assume it works normally if you have just the original 512MB chip in place.

  • Satellite 1410-401 wont boot up

    Hi All,
A friend of mine has asked me if I can sort out her laptop, it wont boot up, when I click the on button the Toshiba screen comes on but keeps coming off and on every 2 seconds !
I can then get to a screen if i press the esc button that is black and says 'Check System.
Then Press F1 key, this stays like that until I press the F1 key, if I press the F1 key I get the System set up page up but when it says do you want to exit and I press yes it just goes back to the flashing start up screen !
Any ideas what the problem might be, it is an oldish laptop a Toshiba S1410-401.
I have tried booting up in Safe Mode but still no joy !
It has XP Home Edition installed with no disk to re install it, I have XP Media Center edition with a bootup disk installed on my home PC, The laptop has a license code could my rescue disk be installed on the laptop and use there License key to activate it or is this not possible ?
Maybe its not a Software issue at all ,any help would be appreciated !
    Many Thanks,
    Nick C

    Hi
I can confirm the information posted by naccioman.
The serial key which you can find at the bottom of the unit will not work with any Microsoft disks. The serial key belongs to the Windows OS which was preinstalled on this notebook and its an OEM license.
So you only chance is to reinstall the OS from the original Microsoft disk.
Firstly you have to check if the notebook will boot from a Windows CD.
If it will not boot up and the installation would not begin then an hardware problem might be the reason why the notebook doesnt work properly.
In such case I recommend testing the RAM and HDD.
The is most cases the faulty or not compatible RAM causes such issues.

  • Satellite A135-S2386 wont boot, no display at all, shows very little signs of life.

I received a customers computer today.  It worked, but they had a problem with the BIOS password, so they asked us to reset it.  The battery was pulled and it was left unplugged for a few hours to be worked on later.  Now when the laptop is powered on, it wont boot at all...  Here is what happens:
Press the power button, and the LED above it turns yellow (I used to own this same model, and I could have sworn my light was blue and not yellow. Can anyone confirm?)
The fan spins up for a few seconds and then stops.
The power indicator on the front of the laptop is green.
When turned on the HD light flashed once quickly, and then never lights up again.
The CD-ROM light is constantly orange, and the tray will not open.  There is no media inside.
There is absolutely no display (not even a flicker) and external monitors don't work either.
No beep codes, even without the RAM and HD.
    I have tried:
    Removing RAM and harddrive
Resetting CMOS (this was the goal to begin with)
Leaving it unplugged and with no battery while holding the power for one minute, then plugging in.
    Booting from USB.
At first I thought it was a problem with the GPU, but I don't even think it is getting a chance to display anything.  Is the MOBO fried?  I find it strange that all of the sudden it breaks when I get my hands on it (makes me look bad too) but I know these things are notorious for things like this.  I also find it strange that the CD-ROM is constantly lit and wont open.  I am thinking of trying to boot without it connected to see what happens.  Any other suggestions?

Have you solved your problem? How?
    I have the same problem.

  • Satellite C660-106 wont get past boot screen and shuts down

    hi all new here
well we have had our c660 106 for 2 month now,but the missus decided to drop it from about 6 inches high, it stayed on but the led screen is cracked internally as the colours were bleeding over etc, unwatchable.
It stayed on untill today and ive been pricing screens up.(had it connected through rgb to my home lcd)
i had to unplug the laptop and turn it off,but now the problem is when i switch it on it will do the inital fire up to the toshiba black screen where i have the options 0f f2 and f12 but then immediately turns off completely, we are worried now as we have a 1 yr old and we have everything she has ever done on there,
is there anything i can try
i know warranty wont cover it as its obvious the screens broken and not just failed.
    any help would be brill
    thanks

    Hi nicolas221078_1
This sounds to be some damage to the motherboard or cooling system and this is why it is now turning off all I can say is are you able to access the BIOS if so then it may be the HDD but if not then you will know 100% it is the motherboard.
If the HDD is ok then you can take it to a data recovery service that should be able to recovery most or all of the data that is stored on the HDD.
also just another thing to point out is to check the memory is sat correctly in the laptop this will not cause any issues with a warranty, also have you though about contense insurance they may cover the damage laptop.

  • Satellite Pro L40 wont boot after changing BIOS settings

Alright changed a few settings in the bios last night and now when I boot I get a black screen lights flash and that hard drive light comes on but nothing on screen.
There was no password on bios,... how would I reset BIOS to normal?
I put a windows disk on I can hear the disk spinning but nothing on the screen
(I think I have come to the right place on the forum)
Its a Toshiba Satellite Pro L40 model psl4be.
    Thanks

    >There was no password on bios,... how would I reset BIOS to normal?
You can set the BIOS to default ONLY inside the BIOS so you have to access the BIOS pressing F2 or at the beginning of the booting order
But I doubt that this problem is related to the BIOS.
Maybe its just a simple bad luck that this issue happened just exactly after changing something in BIOS.
Try to connect an external monitor and check if you can see something on 2nd display.

    Hi
Did you see something on the display?? Maybe an error message which says that no boot source was found or something likes that???
Several times ago my notebook was not able to boot up. I have simply disconnected the AC adaptor, I have removed the battery and I have waited about 20 min.
Then I have connected everything again and the notebook has booted up
I dont know if it will help you but you know trying is for free ;)

  • Satellite C660-21Q wont start

Hi guys, new to this forum so bare with me!
    I dropped my laptop last week, on its side. Now when I turn on, it is on a black screen with the white blinker at the top left hand side. After a while, the "Toshiba" loading screen comes on (where you can seleft f2 and f12 for the menus), after that the screen stays a blank black for a minute, and it comes up with the boot menu ( I think). There are four options;
    HDD/SSD
    CD/DVD
    FDD
    LAN
I can exit this, and lots of text comes up ( I dont know what it says, it goes away too quickly) and it takes me right back to the boot menu. When I click enter on all of these, they all say they are failed.
Can anyone help me with this situation?

    > Now when I turn on, it is on a black screen with the white blinker at the top left hand sid
Yes it looks like the HDD cannot be found
Check the connection to the HDD. Maybe its loose
In worst case the HDD is damage and you will need to replace the HDD.
You will need a 2.5 SATA HDD.
