Satellite C660 - My Hard Drive failis to boot up
My Laptop is a saterlite c660-c66od Running windows Server 2008 32BIT with 3gb ram and it started going slow and then the whole system crashed i rebooted it and then it would not load up saying my hard driver failed to boot i then booted it up in linux Ubuntu on a live disk and was able to acsess my Files then i rebooted thinking the hard drive would boot and it still failed. i have tried booting it up again in linux but it wont work
I have Lodes of confidential Documents that are not stored anywhere else and i really need to gain acsess to it is there a way i can recover or fix my HDD or am i going to lose so much data my company is going to crash amd burn

In most cases the data is lost if the HDD is faulty and you did not create any backups.

You can purchase different Data Recovery Service for Hard Disk Drives. Such services is good for the future. Now you could ask Toshiba hotline for other date recovery services but of course you will have to pay for such data recovery.

Sounds (!) like the HDD is faulty.
I think you need a new one ;(
Usually you can use any 2.5 SATA HDD.
You could order the HDD and could replace this yourself its not very tricky as you can see this here:

My hard drive failed, has been replaced, and now it won't boot to CD to install the OS package. It would boot for a while, get through the first cd of install and would stop randomly in the next install. I found out that the installation disk was cracked so I went out and purchased the Mac Box Set which includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09 under advisement from an associate at the local apple store. Now, I try installing this new OS disk and all I get is the apple logo without a spinning wheel for about 10 minutes and the computer restarts and does it again. I have tried booting from disk, holding c while starting up, and in safemode, holding shift while booting. Please help save my poor poor macbook!!!
These errors look like corrupt or missing files that leopard requires. It sound like you need to start from scratch: format your drive, reload Leopard. I realize that this is probably what you are trying to do.
If you cannot boot from install DVD and cannot successfully get into Safemode or Single usermode (due to a corrupt or incomplete install) then you will need another computer to assist you.
If you can get it into Target Disk Mode and have another Mac you could plug it into that Mac and reformat it.
If it will not go into TDM then you may need to take it out and put it into an external enclosure to plug into another Mac to format it. -

My Mac G4 MDD no longer shows the start up hard drive icon. The one with all my files on!
It shows the other 3 hard drive icons and boots up OK.
Has my start up hard drive failed? Can it be fixed?

Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop -> Hard disks
The startup disk is sometimes treated differently from other disks (such as external and network disks) and I'm guessing this is a simple preference setting, although I might be wrong. -
I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? I need to do something quickly, but I'm not sure what I can or should be doing.Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive. Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box. DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key. That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives. Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive. -
Macbook Pro Hard Drives Failing
Hi all,
I've been having massing problems with my Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 Ghz laptop. I got one brand new with apple care in December of 2008. The hard drive was the standard 320 Gb @ 5400 RPM.
Within approximately two weeks of operation the computer failed (froze and after a hard shutdown wouldn't boot). It turned out the hard drive failed. Two weeks! So I took it back to Apple and they replaced the hard drive (took them one week so I lost a week of productivity).
One week after receiving the laptop back, the hard drive failed again! This time I believe the OS got corrupted somehow as the symptom was that it would not boot.
So back to Apple and they straight out replaced it with a new one. One week later, guess what? Failure. So back again and they replaced it.
I'm now on my 3rd laptop from Apple and this hard drive is failing. Luckily I was able to back everything up. I downloaded a utility called SMART Utility and it tells me 60 some sectors are bad on this disk.
Is anyone else having issues like this? Its absolutely ridiculous. Currently the computer is working despite the failed sectors and horrible sounds coming from the hard drive but I expect failure soon. I'll be taking this back to Apple and showing them the results of the SMART Utility, but I'm at the end of the rope here.
I've owned multiple Macbook Pros before and absolutely loved them. But now I am so disillusioned by this... To Apple's credit they have had great customer service, but now I'm at the point where I need to be able to rely on my machine.
Has anyone heard anything?I would second Michael's comment. While hard drives do fail, the rate at which yours are failing would appear to be well beyond the statistical average. I would generally think the next level would be a problem with the MacBook itself causing the failures, but from what I can tell from your comment is that they have replaced your MacBook twice (and you're on your third?). So that would seem to rule out a problem with the MacBook itself. You mentioned that you've had other MacBooks before and it doesn't sound like you've had problems with them... so I wouldn't expect that you're doing anything unusual that would cause the problem.
You're either had a remarkable run of bad luck, or there's something going on that's out of the ordinary causing these drives to fail. I would imagine that when stores get machines, they're likely shipped from batches that are manufactured at similar times. If they had a batch of faulty drives from the manufacturer, it's possible a single store could have gotten several of them. That would still not really explain why your initially replaced drive failed as it would likely have come from a totally different batch than what would have been used in manufacturing at the time your notebook was put together. I guess it's always possible that they might put in a drive that that wasn't new. -

My internal hard drive no longer boots when inside my laptop. The drive boots just fine in external usb enclosure. It is also fully recognized when internal (as seen in single user mode, recovery mode or while booting from another drive).
I have tried:
with disk utilities
•fixing permissions
•repairing disk
in single user mode
•fsck -fy
zapping the pram
removing ram and zapping the pram
Any suggestions or diagnostics would be appreciated.Can't believe I spent days reformating my hard drive, restoring it, getting another hard drive... and it was all a cable that failed. I wonder what can make an internal cable like that fail (seems like the least likely part of all to fail).

Satellite L350-12C - hard drive failure, need recovery
Please help. I have Toshiba Satellite L350-12c and its a German model. My hard drive failed.
The local Toshiba repair centre said they can replace the hard drive but without the disc they cant restore it to working order.
The worst part is its still under warranty but Toshiba is refusing to help me. The only place I can order discs is from Europe who wont accept an American credit card and mailing address which kills me because I have another laptop from Germany and they sent me discs with no issue.
The local shop even contacted the local rep and she was no help. Please help frustrated Toshiba customer.Sorry i have a german l350-12c that was purchased in the UK. it has a 2 year international warrnty and i live in the united states. toshiba of usa insist they will do nothing to help. the local toshiba dealer is been very helpful they spoke to a toshiba of america rep and still was told their was nothing they can do. this model was not built for the us market. the local shop is willing to fix it if i get the original restore disc. without that their not willing because they say they dont have access to the drivers and the special fixes that would be ont the disc.which is the stuff that makes all the little functions work, Plus without the disc theirs no way to set up the recovery partation,which is damaged due to the harddrive failure. theirs ways it could be peaced together but they wont do the warrnty work without being able to fix it. if they just swapped the harddrive i guess i could manage but that realy blows seeing i have warrnty which is suppose to be honored even in the us. when i call toshiba of uk they say they cant send the disc to the us. but yet through my work we get things from simens in germay on a regular basis.so im completely at a lose thanks for any help.

Hey guys, heres my story. My hard drive failed last week (wouldnt go past white screen), took it to genius bar, they ran Disk Warrior and it seemed to fix it. As a precautionary measure I bought a 1tb external drive and backep up my system via time machine. Today my imac froze and I am having the same problem, wont boot past white screen. I am 2 months out of my warranty and need to know what is the easiest fastest and cheapest fix since I am a college student. Also are any of these options possible?
1) Install OS X as a clean system and use my external HD to load my system.
2) Buy another external HD and boot up from that?
3) Buy another internal HD and have someone install it (not sure how much this would cost though)
If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.All 3 of those are possible however #1 and 2 are not favorable. I would suggest to first run a few tests to make sure that your hard drive is actually bad.
1) The first test like Larry suggested is to boot up to your Mac OS install disk, but do not go through the installation process. Instead go to the Utilities Menu at the top and open Disk Utility. If your drive does not show up in the left hand column then the drive is likely bad.
2) Insert the original iMac install disk like in step 1 but this time when you startup hold down the "d" key. This will load up the Apple Hardware Test. Run the Extended test. If it passes everything then this means your computer is ok just the hard drive is bad.
3) However if in step 1 Disk Utility does see the hard drive first try Repairing the Disk. If this fails you might try reformatting the drive and reinstalling Mac OS X as the problem could be an issue with the system software.
4) Which should actually be step 1 is to disconnect all of your external devices like hard drives and see if you still cannot boot. Keep everything disconnected during testing.
The problem is hard drive failures can be intermittent. One minute it works the next minute it doesn't even see a hard drive. Good luck though and let us know how it goes.

I'm an avid Mac enthusiast who works in a creative field. However, I simply cannot afford a new Mac after my old one's internal hard drive failed. Can anyone recommend an affordable Mac option? I don't want to consider a non-Apple product.
Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive. -

Can you boot the MacBook into FireWire Target Disk mode? That turns it (temporarily) into an expensive hard drive. You can then move files.
Another way would be to use an external hard drive, attach it to the MacBook and user software such as Bombich's Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the hard drive (assuming you have sufficient space on the iMac.)

X102e - Hard drive does not boot into Windows
Hi, I was trying to reinstall Windows on my X120e.
I tried clean install with Windows 7 Professional, but the hard drive does not boot into the Windows once it has done the first phase of the install(you know, the copying part)
After the restart done by Windows, it goes as far as "Starting Windows" but does not actually boot into the Windows.
When I try to install Windows with another HDD, the device works well, but I can't swap the HDD because it is not 7.5mm think HDD.
Is there any possibility the HDD will work trough any software-level process? The HDD works fine as external HDD when tested with external HDD adapter, and installs well. only problem is that it fails to boot

This is not exactly the issue. I was talking about the HDD originally installed in the PC.
The PC successfully recognizes the external disk I used to install the Windows, but the problem was that I did not boot into the "First boot" screen, which basically works on the already installed data.
As of now I have installed an SSD and is working fine. strange part is that HDD works just fine when I use it as an external HDD via adapter. Strange huh?

Portege M200 - hard drive failed
My 60GB Toshiba hard drive failed in my Portege M200.
I tried fitting a hard drive I had in my old laptop a 30GB Hitachi hard drive but the laptop doesnt seem to recognise it. Does it need a Toshiba hard drive or is the laptop dead, when I put the hard drive in I get invalid boot disk message.
The old hard drive goes to a blue screen then reboots laptop.No it must not be Toshiba HDD only. I found the list of some compatible HDDs for this old Portege.

would the computer still boot and be unaffected unless i tried to boot to mac?failure is usually not dead. It can be a bad sector, but usually it is a directory issue or just the partition table (but which require either quick or long format)
if you have a workstation, you should clone both operating systems; you should not put them on the same hard drive. And you just use the clone you made for each (Paragon Clone OS for Windows $19; Carbon Copy is sharefare for OS X)
both of those allow booting off the new hard drive while you figure what you want to do or what happened.
If you only have two hard drives use the other drive bays.
Basically NOTHING happens if you pull one or the other. -

I have a Macbook that when booted just displayed a folder icon. Thru searching I believed the hard drive failed.
80gb drive fails "verify disk" so I ran "repair disk". It says it repairs but always fails again on verify.
So I purchased a new hard drive (500 gb) Installed it and when I tried to partion it it appears as a 3.6 TB drive?????? So I returned the drive and got another only to have the same issue?
Is it the drive? Some other part? Please help?
