Satellite C870-191 - How to boot on a CD or a USB drive?

Hi!
I would like to know how to boot on a CD or a USB drive.
My computer is a Toshiba Laptop Satellite C870-191.
I have saved a new boot order on BIOS screen but it doesn't work as expected.
Your sincerely,
J.M.O.

Hi
This is very strange
Set the BIOS to default.
To access the BIOS press F2, then press F9 to get default settings and save changes pressing F10.
Then reboot the notebook and press F12 several times in the row usually the boot menu should appear on the display
Now choose ODD as boot device
Furthermore pressing C button at the beginning should also enable ODD as boot device

  • How can i create a Trash for external USB Drives ?

    Hello,
how can i create a Trash for external USB Drives or my TimeCapsule ?
    Thanks.

You do not need to create trash cans for individual drives.  The trash can on the desktop holds deleted files from all mounted drives.
TimeCapsule manages its own space.  If it fills up it will delete older backps to make space for newer ones.

  • Satellite 1800-804: How to boot from a USB device?

I have a satellite 1800-804 and i like to know how to boot the notebook from a usb device.

    Hi
If you want to boot from USB device you should press down U key on keyboard just after pressing power button but I dont know if this will work (as far as I know it works with external FDD device).
Try to boot up the unit with start disk (FDD) and load the MS-DOS driver for the external CD/DVD-ROM if you can find it on manufacturers download page.

  • Satellite A25-S279: How to reinstall XP with Ghost DVD without internal drive

I have tosbhia satellite a25-s279 and the toshiba ghost dvd.
My internal dvd drive is broken (w/ some difficult, it can play some audio cd's some of the time. it doesn't recognize any cd-rom nor dvd). I also have external pioneer dvd writer dvr-s606 (connect to satellite via usb). I want to reinstall xp.
The Bios is 1.10, the chipset is ALi M1672 rev 0. You have option of booting off HDD, FDD, CD-ROM, and LAN.
I think you also have option of bootin off pc-card, but this is not in Bios.
It appears (from reading these forums) that my satellite does not support booting off the external drive, so i can't use the ghost disc?
I found another website suggesting make usb stick bootable and load xp from the memory stick.
However, reading these forums, it also appears that this is not possible w/ my satellite?
I guess I can buy a replacement internal dvd drive, but these seem extremely unreliable, and i already have functioning external drive.
any other advice would be appreciated.
    thanks.

    >It appears (from reading these forums) that my satellite does not support booting off the external drive, so i can't use the ghost disc?
That's correct. The external USB CD/DVD drive is not bootable and you will be not able to boot from the CD
    > I found another website suggesting make USB stick bootable and load Xp from the memory stick
No, its not possible to boot from the USB stick. BIOS does not support this boot option
I think the only way is to buy an internal supported drive and then to boot from the CD.
You could also try to boot from the LAN but this is not easy and you will need an RIS server.
I think this is not a really solution.

  • How to change mount options on an install usb drive ?

    Situation:
    I did create an USB drive with three bootable partitions;
    - one bootable volume named “Install OS X Yosemite”, created with the ‘createinstallmedia’ command
    - one bootable volume named “Install OS X Mavericks”, created with the ‘createinstallmedia’ command
    - one bootable volume named “Install OS X Mountain Lion”, created by restoring the /Install OS X Mountain Lion.app/Contents/Shared Support/InstallESD.dmg image within the 10.8 Installer app
Everything works fine, and I can select any of the three boot volumes in order to boot and install a computer with 10.8, 10.9 or 10.10.
    Here are my two questions:
    1. When booting with the Startup Manager, I can see the three boot volumes on the USB stick listed as startup options. When the first two are named “Install Yosemite” or “Install Mavericks”, the Mountain Lion one appears as “Mac OSX”. Is there a way to change this value / string ?
NB: renaming the Mountain Lion volume on the USB drive using the Finder was done, but does not change in the way the volume appears in the Startup Manager
    2. When connecting the USB drive to a running OS X system, all volumes mount well, but the Mountain Lion one automatically opens a Finder window. Is there a way to change this behaviour, having the volume mounted, but preventing this Finder window to automatically open ?
Read about the 'bless' command, but I am not sure this could solve the issue, as my Install Mountain Lion drive is already bootable and working ...

I haven't had chance to test but bless looks promising…

  • How Do I: Make a bootable FW or USB drive which I can install from?

I was at our local Apple store yesterday after my wife's Macbook decided not to like the 10.5 install disk that came with it. It would make it to about 7% and then error-out and message us that we needed to clean the disk. Multiple times. So I brought it in and the nice Genius had a drive which had 10.4, 10.5 , Drive Genius and more on it. He was able to run Disk Utility from it as well as boot from it and install from it.
I have multiple drives floating around, too small to be of much use and log ago replaced with larger drives.
We have three Macs and two versions of OSX. This would be very nice rather than digging out the disks.
I know I can install to a FW or USB drive and boot from it, but how do I go about installing from an external drive?

Note that the restored HD partition version of the installer DVD will still be writable, unlike the DVD itself, which is inherently read only. This should not be a problem unless something either corrupts its files or adds something that interferes with the operation of the DVD version of the OS* (which is stripped down & contains some small differences in the component files it shares with the standard version).
For this reason, you should not mount the partition unless you need to use it and/or unmount it when not in use.
    * By "the DVD version of the OS," I mean the OS that boots the Mac to run the installer, not the OS version it installs.

  • How to reset Windows 7 Administrator Password with USB Drive

The first thing we often do When we *Lose Windows 7 password* is asking a computer expert for help. Most people usually only know how to create a new user with a strong password or change it. But they don't develop a habit to create a password reset disk for preventing lost password. It is a great and free gift from Microsoft. Click here to learn how to create password reset disk in windows 7 If you ready have a reset disk, please follow steps below:
Step1: Start or restart your computer, insert your USB. In the welcome interface, press ctrl+alt+delete twice, get into the classic log on box. Then type the user name that you want to use and a wrong password or leave it blank, and then press ENTER or click OK.. it will show you logon failed.
Step2: Click *Reset password*...... it will show you the Password Reset Wizard. And it enables you to create a new password for your user account. In the Password Reset Wizard dialog box, click *Next*.
Step 3: Chose the disk which you insert, click *Next*. Type a new password in the Type a new password box, and then type the password again in the Type the password again to confirm box. In the Type a new password hint box, type a hint for the password or not, and then click *Next**→**Finish*, and then try to log on to Windows XP again when use the new password you just set.

  • Can I boot Vista OS from an external USB drive

Hi, I would like to install Vista onto an external (USB) drive and boot from that occasionally whilst retaining XP on the internal drive. Is this possible please. I realise I would need to change the boot order in BIOS.
I know I could create a dual boot internal but would like to retain as much space as possible on the internal drive as I will only rarely need to use the dreaded Vista.
    Thanks
    Ron

And how you want to install Vista on USB device? Have you already tried it?
Please post a little bit about your experience with it if you have some.
Anyway, as far as I know something like this is not possible.

  • How to download Lion again to make bootable USB drive?

I downloaded Lion and have it installed.  Wanted to create a bootable USB drive from the .dmg file but it's gone after install.  How can I download again?  App Store shows it's installed and won't let me re-download.

This is not difficult and you will not have to download from the app store.
your computer has what is called  a recovery partition that came with it.
simply hold cmd+R while you boot up. let go a second after you hear the chime.
you will boot into the recovery partition.
Use disk utlity to format your usb drive and then exit Disk utlity and go to Reinstall Mountain Lion.
it will ask  you which disk you want to install ML onto. Choose your new USB drive.
    easy peasy

    Hi,
i am using the windows XP on my hard drive(IDE ), i want to boot my pc using external usb hard drive. whenever i try to install the OS on /usb drive the first boot after copy of OS files itself fails saying, boot_device_unmountaable_fatal_error...something like this..i tried every trick i know to make this work..amazingly if i make my hard drive bootable on DOS with command.com on it..the system boots on DOS...which makes me think that the BIOS support the booting from USB drive..but none of the windows operating systems are booting from it...will any one is kind enough to solve the puzzle for me?????
    thanks
    praveen

    Hello,
I can not say if it is supported on this notebook or not, but on some Satellite M series USB memory is a supported boot option. If you hit F2 on start up and go into BIOS then check boot, if it is supported it should be listed there. Otherwise it is not supported on this model. Hope that helps.

  • How Can I Set an Application on a USB Drive to Automatically Open When the Drive is Inserted Into a Mac?

The title pretty much says it all. But if you don't understand, here is an example of what I want to happen:
When a USB drive is inserted onto my Mac, an application on it will open.
How can I make this happen?

I haven't tried it, but perhaps a Watched folder on the external drive & an Applescript?
    http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.20/20.07/FolderWatching/index.html
Or perhaps just an Applescript to check for exist :USB Drive Name, then run application?

  • How do I transfer data from IPAD to USB drive?

How do I transfer data from my IPAD to my PC or USB port?  I have orginal files and documents that I need to put on a USB drive and I do not know enough about the IPAD to figure it out.  Thank you.

You need to transfer the files to your computer and then copy them to the thumb drive.
You can use file sharing if your apps support it.
iOS: About File Sharing - Support - Apple
You can use cloud sync services like DropBox.
    Dropbox - Dropbox for iPad
There are apps that let you transfer the files using USB or WiFi.
File Manager - Folder Plus on the App Store on iTunes
Or like Kappy suggested, email will work as well.

  • How to backup docs and pics using a USB drive?

I'm a fairly new Mac user and I'm panicking a little right now. I bought a USB to backup my pictures, documents, etc. (I also backup using Time Machine and an external drive, but wanted some extra protection). I just inserted the USB drive for the first time, it showed up on my desktop as "Untitled" (so far, so good), then I dragged my Documents folder from the Dock to the USB icon and the Documents folder from the Dock is gone. (Yikes!) When I opened the USB icon, there was nothing in it. I looked in Finder and my Documents are still in this Mac (somewhere), but how do I get the folder of them back onto the Dock? And before I go any further, what is the (proper) procedure for backing up my docs and pics (from iPhoto) to this USB drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not gonna touch a thing until I hear from someone with more Mac knowledge than this Mac newbie.
    Sunny

Select the drive in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and if it's format doesn't contain Mac OS Extended, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it.
Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and drag the items inside you want to back up onto the external drive and drag the Documents folder to the Dock.
