Satellite ethernet hub snow airport?

We just had a satellite high speed connection installed. I am trying to get my LAN back up. Previously we had an ethernet hub connection hardwired to two computers and the ABS plugged into it using its modem to bring in the internet. NOW we have the DW7000 modem plugged into the "uplink" port on the hub instead of the ABS.The two hardwired computers are connecting fine. however I cannot get the ABS to work for the wireless connection my laptop needs. Any ideas?

Just to update everyone... finally I realized the problem... I never should have plugged into the uplink port on the hub. As soon as the satellite modem was plugged into a regular Hub port along with the ABS also in a regular Hub port everything instantly started working and our wired / wireless LAN is back in operation.

Configuring a snow airport while using 10.7

I have several Airport stations. One of them is an old snow airport.
I want to configure it to expand my network but I have been unable to configure it.
I finally found that I need Airport Admin utility version 4.2.5 to do it. I downloaded it but it appears LION (10.7 anything) is unable to open this application. Lion (I believe) has discontinued uses of Rosetta and this utility may require it.
Can anyone out there tell me if there is a way to configure this thing?

Just to be sure, by "old snow" are you referring to the 802.11b Dual Ethernet (aka Snow) AirPort Base Station or the similar dome-shaped 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme Base Station?

Virgin Broadband Ethernet Hub Airport Express, can't set up a network

My broadband comes in via the virgin modem, I then want to be able to 'split it off' to provide a wired ethernet connection for 'ordinary' machines and also a wifi network for all the laptops in the house.
Currently I have set it up as follows:
Virgin Broadband >> Ethernet Hub >> Airport Express (wifi) >>
Connections to the Ethernet Hub work (its what I am on now) and filesharing between machines on the wifi network work as well but machines on the wifi network can't get any internet access???

This won't work with an Ethernet hub or Ethernet switch.
Your ISP gives you a single IP address. To connect multiple devices you need a router. The router will use that single public IP address and then create multiple local IP addresses for your devices. The AirPort Express (AX) IS a router but unfortunately only has a single Ethernet port and can't support Ethernet clients.
So... you need to replace the hub with an inexpensive wired router.
Then configure the AX to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address) so that the AX will not create a separate subnet for the wireless clients.

Is it possible to use one of the outputs from the airport directly to an ethernet hub/switch and then distribute to other parts of the house via Cat6? Do I need to use a Switch or a Hub to do this?
I also want to set up the mac mini as a media server with 2 1TB drives hanging off it is this possible.

Airport Express (not n) with ethernet hub and as wireless base

I've got a cable modem. It connects by ethernet to a hub. Airport Express (not n) connects to the hub by ethernet. My laptops (MacBook and HP 69xx WinXP Pro) connect to AX and internet just fine.
In that same hub, I want to connect a D-Link DNS323, which I wish to be made accessible to the wireless network provided by AX. Here's a sort-of diagram:

With only the hub, the NAS, and the express, you can't access both the internet and the NAS wirelessly at the same time. Here's why:
The AirPort Express has only one Ethernet port. That port can either act as a WAN port or a LAN port, but not both at the same time.
You need the Express to be connected to the internet. Unless you have another wireless router (Apple or otherwise), it will have to be connected through its Ethernet port. Therefore, the Ethernet port must act as a WAN port.
The NAS, on the other hand, is part of your network. For it to be connected, the port must act as a LAN port.
This means that the NAS can't be connected to the Express via Ethernet because then the port would need to act both as a LAN port and a WAN port, which it can't do.
This means you'll need an additional wireless router if you want to access both the internet and the NAS at the same time.
If you have another wireless router (it doesn't have to be an AirPort), I can help you configure it to work with your current network so that you can access the NAS.

Airport Extreme is a port short. Anyone know of a low-cost Ethernet hub?

I recently connected a Xerox Phaser 8550 postscript printer via USB to a Mac Pro. However, one of the important Xerox features is an Internet link that provides off-site monitoring of the printer's condition and supplies. This evidently requires an ethernet connection to a modem. (It won't work via the USB connection to the computer).
My Mac Pro has two gigabit ethernet ports, as does the Airport base station. However, one Airport port connects to a Comcast broadband cable modem, and the other connects to the Mac. That leaves only one available port, on the Mac Pro. I tried connecting that port to the printer, but no luck.
To link the printer to the Internet, Xerox instructs users to type the printer's IP address in a browser window (they suggest Internet Explorer -- I use Safari). Thus, it seems the printer needs a direct connection to a network hub, such as my Airport base station, for that method to work.
I use the base station to provide a wireless Internet connection to my portable Power Book. (The Mac Pro does not have or need an Airport Extreme card for this setup because it attaches to the base station via ethernet cable.)
Ethernet hubs I have found on the Apple Store website cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars. There must be a cheaper solution. Right?
I spoke to a Xerox rep, but she hasn't found an answer yet. (They are not up to speed on Macs, and this is just one of several questions I raised.)
I'll be grateful if the experts in this forum have an answer for this one.

But I could use some further advice. The "switches" and "routers" look similar to a Belkin Wireless Router that I've tossed in the garage for the next yard sale. I wasted a lot of time on the phone with Belkin's tech support trying to configure the thing and get rid of a persistent pop-up that tried to enroll me in Belkin's "Parental Control" program. It was such a headache that I tossed it and bought Apple's Airport Extreme, which set itself up in about a minute.
Before I buy another "router" or "switcher", I need to know what's involved in the setup. Ideally, I'd like to plug it into one of the ethernet ports on the Airport, and then plug the printer into the router, and then run an ethernet cable from the router back to the computer, and have everything work automatically, with the Airport serving as the primary base station. Is this possible?
If I have to try and figure out IP addresses and check a bunch of mysterious configurations, and then remember what to do after the next power failure disrupts all the connections -- uh, uh! (There's another question in this forum from someone else struggling with a Belkin router; so I'm not alone in this arena.)
Thus, if you can steer me toward the easiest choice here, I'd be much obliged.

BT Home Hub and Airport Express

Although the BT Home Hub is 'Mac' compatible, there is still little information on using it with Airport networks. I hope that the following makes sense (I am no expert) and is useful?
Connect the Airport Express via Ethernet cable to the Ethernet 1 port of the Home Hub
Open Airport Admin Utility
Airport Tab>Base Station>enter a base station name
Airport Tab>Airport Network>Wireless Mode>Create a Wireles Network(Home Router)
Airport Tab>Airport Network>Name>enter a network name
Airport Tab>Airport Network>Wireless Security>enter your preferred security level and ensure it matches the Home Hub security level
Airport Tab>Airport Network>Channel>choose the same channel as your hub, do not use automatic
Airport Tab>Airport Network>Create a closed network>leave this unchecked
Airport Tab>Airport Network>Mode>if you have a mix of 11b and 11g cards leave the mode at 892.11b/g Compatible
Airport Tab>Airport Network>Wireless Options>leave these alone if you want to avoid problems
Internet Tab>Connect Using>Airport (WDS)
Internet Tab>Configure WDS Host>MAC Address>enter the MAC address of the Home Hub(i.e the primary WDS base station
Internet Tab>Configure WDS Host>MAC Address>tick the box Also allow wireless client computers

WDS Tab>Main AirPort ID> enter the MAC address of the Home Hub or use Select to scan for the Home Hub wireless network and you should pick up the MAC address etc automatically
Click to Update these settings.
Go to bthomehub.home and ensure that you have WDS dis-ABLED in the settings. You will have to log on as admin (password is defaulted to ‘admin’, but it is worth changing it!).
To do this after logging on as admin go to>Home Network>Interfaces>WLAN At this point you should be presented with Wireless Access Point click on Configure (top right) Scroll down the screen that follows and click Configure WDS and you will be presented with the Wireless screen. Click Scan for wireless access points. The BT Home hub will scan for available networks and once it has found these you should click apply but DO NOT ENABLE WDS! Click back from this screen to Home Network and you should see your wireless Mac(s) and their various connections

I have now changed settings as you advised from WDS to Ethernet for the Express>BT Home Hub connection.
I know from previous posting that the ABS Snow does not support WDS.
Hers is what I want to achieve, however so far, with the exception of the Mac Mini (untested/unconfigured for use with Extreme)it all works?:-

How Do I Use My Apple LaserWriter IIg Ethernet with Snow Leopard?

How do I get my LaserWriter IIg ethernet printer to work with 10.6 Snow Leopard? Cannot seem to find the printer listed in any of the "add a printer" menus. The driver is listed as part of OS 10.6. If I need an IP Address, how do I find out what its IP Address is?

(OK, I am confused because the Apple LaserWriter IIg has a built-in ethernet card so for the past few years and until last Sunday (thru OS 10.5) I've simply run the ethernet cable through an Asante FriendlyNet Adapter that runs over to my Ethernet hub and everything has printed fine. Plus I was able to share the printer with other computers around the house. Maybe you are saying that internally the printer communicates to the ethernet card via AppleTalk?)
Unfortunately I cannot find my notes on what IP address I've been using the past few years. I came to the conclusion that I should use the ethernet address which I think is 192.168.0.3, but that hasn't worked. I also tried 192.168.0.1 and 0.0.0.0.
I am adding these using the LPD option in the Add Printer dialog box.
In each case, it adds the printer, I can send a job to the print queue but it doesn't send the job anywhere and keeps trying every 15 seconds.
Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

Possible to attach ethernet hub to AEBS?

Does anyone know if it is possible to attach a (non-switching) ethernet hub to my 2009 (dual-antenna, 802.11n capable) Airport Extreme Base Station? I've just wired my house up with Cat-5e and would like more than the three available ethernet ports, but want the AEBS to continue with all NAT/routing. I'm reluctant to get involved with a second router and subnetwork, because in my experience that's a pain ...

I am not familiar with this particular device, but the link says that
This switch is a Plug & Play installation and no configuration is necessary.
So, if you take that at face value, the device is a switch.
The problem with this device is that you will lose performance. Your AirPort Exteme has 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN capability. The switch that you are looking at is only 10/100.
Suggest that you look for a 10/100/1000 or what is known as a Gigabit Ethernet switch. Netgear or Cisco products would be a very good choice.

Can I print on non-USB printers connected to Ethernet hub?

I just connected an Airport Extreme base station to my DSL modem and pre-existing ethernet hub. (The old hub connects my old G4 running OS 9.2 to an HP 5MP laser printer and a Canon Pixma IP 4000.) Then I booted my brand new MacBook 13 and established Internet connectvity through the base station. My question is, should I expect the Airport Extreme base station to also recognize the existence of the two printer attached to my old ethernet hub? Or does the Mac Book have access only to printers that are wired to the base station?
Any advice appreciated.

Airport Extreme has a WAN port (should be connected to DSL), and a LAN port - that's where you should connect the hub. Then your network will be mostly like it was before and the printers will be recognized.

Using an ethernet hub with base station

hi, i'm looking at setting up a home network using an airport extreme base station. at the moment 2 macs will need to hardwired using an ethernet hub (they are in the same room). i'm wondering by using a hub will that lessen performance speed etc to these machines? or would i be better off installing extreme cards. i'm trying to avoid this as one is a late 2005 G5 which needs to have the combined airport/bluetooth card factory installed. thanks for any advice.

My cable modem has one jack only for the ethernet cable that hooks into my AEBS, which hooks into my G3. With an Airport Express (to boost the signal), my G5 is connected wirelessly. Here's my question:
My son just bought an XBox, which is not wireless (you can buy a stands alone wireless unit from Microsoft for $100). The XBox connects to the internet via an ethernet cable, which we plug into the cable modem, but the only way to give him access to the internet is to disconnect my G3 and G5. Can we remedy this problem by getting something like an ethernet hub? Does such a thing exist (I've heard of USB hubs)? Would that allow us all to be connected to the internet at the same time?

Yes, this, too, would work except, as you cogently suggest, it does indeed tie the xbox to the g5 which is not a viable solution.
I like cheap solutions, too, expecially after already shelling out all that money for an AEBS!

The cable modem and AEBS is in his room (my g3 went to him and it isn't wireless), so an ethernet hub would be cheaper than the wireless unit from Microsoft.
On installation: Would I hook it up to the cable modem and then plug in AEBS, xbox, etc. to it?

Daisy-chaining a ethernet hub to the time capsule

I am using all three of my wired ethernet ports on the time capsule, and I need a fourth. Current set up is 1) Vonage VoIP adapter; 2) printer w/o wireless option; and 3) connection to a EoPL adapter.
I was wondering if I can buy a cheap ethernet hub and plug the hub (WAN or LAN port?) into the TC and get additional ethernet ports in the manner of a USB hub.
No, I don't want to put the printer on the USB port as it is shared over the LAN, and I don't want to buy another AirPort Express and set up the printer on that unless I have to.
If I can, what are the recommendations on type of hub, how to connect and which devices will funtion better (if any) plugged directly into the TC vs. the hub.
I am doing all of this because I want to add a Sonos bridge which needs a wired ethernet connection. Haven't looked at putting another EoPL node in and plugging the Sonos bridge into that directly.

Any gigabit switch will work perfectly.. you can also use fast ethernet but gigabit matches the TC and are cheap enough. Switch is now a consumer electronics item.. walk into a large computer store ask for a gigabit switch.. name the number of ports you want, 5, 8, 16, 24 are standard. Carry switch home.. plug it into the TC .. any of the LAN ports.. to any port on the switch.. they are all auto now.. no uplink port. The limitation is a 1Gbit/s link between the two boxes.. so if you have very fast file transfers.. all should be plugged into the switch rather than the TC.
Best value is 8port.. and they now have green ones.. they auto turn off unused ports to save power.. the power saved is negligible but the heat disappation goes down and it runs cooler. Should be less than $80.. maybe even $50.

Setting up bt home hub with airport extreme and timecapsule

Hi I am running BT Broadband direct into a BT Home Hub (Black version) then ethernet into an airport extreme.
Timecapsule then extending the apple network and an iMac ethernet into the timecapsule
Various other macbooks, iPhones,iPads, iPods and apple tv wirelessly linked in. (and an hp multifunction printer)
The network seems very slow and unstable - any suggestions on how to tune it?

Introducing wireless repeater or bridge causes double hopping wireless. It greatly reduces speed and efficiency of wireless. I am not 100% sure I understand your arrangement. But there are limited wireless channels and the result of many wireless devices fighting each other is bad.
1. Do you have wireless turned off in the Home Hub? Please do unless it is providing important connections.
2. What mode is the AEBS running in? Because with BT you must use the home hub as a router, you should have the AEBS bridged. Is that the case?
3. Wireless extending networking adds issues as stated. Get rid of this. The best method is to link the TC and AEBS by alternative.. ie ethernet is the best by huge margin. If you cannot do this in your house then use EOP adapters. They are not foolproof but if they work, they keep working with reliability and stabilty and speed that wireless cannot match. You can then run the AEBS and TC as roaming WAP, by using different channels but same SSID (wireless name), and security settings and passwords.

Administer old Snow Airport Base Station

I have an old "Snow" airport base station. I use it to connect to DSL (the DSL modem is in bridge mode) and to provide WiFi access for my laptop. It always just works. I have a dim recollection of configuring it with a utility. Haven't done it for a long time. I still have the passwords.
As I recall, the administration utility is called "AirPort Setup Assistant for Graphite or Snow." The version number is 3.4.3. It won't launch. I get a dialog box that says it won't work this version of my OS (10.6.6)
I looked around, thought I found the current version of this utility, downloaded it. It's called "AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow". Version is 4.2.5. This won't launch either. Similar error message.
Do I have the right utility? Do I need to download a different version?
Is my Airport Base Station hopelessly obsolete? (It still works, but I can't change the configuration.)

I get a bit confused, because one utility administers the base station, and another one administers the WiFi. I forget which is which.
My MacMini has built in WiFi, I think, but it's turned off and I don't need it. I'm connected to the internet by the Ethernet cable that comes from the Airport base station. I just want to configure the Airport base station (Snow).
I have "AirPort Utility" version 5.5.2. It will launch. I get a notification: "Airport Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless devices you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, then click rescan to try again."
Hope that's clear.
I'm stumped. Not sure where to go from here.
