Satellite L - LCD monitor flashing black after desktop loads
My LCD monitor has started flashing black at startup. It doesn't do it if I log off and log back in, only on startup. I can log in, the desktop loads and everything looks normal then after about 7 seconds everything goes black, then the taskbar quickly appears then disappears and then the desktop becomes visible again momentarily but goes black again. It repeats this very fast two or three times then starts normally.
Everything seems to be working fine otherwise. I disabled my antivirus so it wouldn't startup but that didn't help. I've done some registry cleaning lately so I restored everything back to well before this started and that didn't help either. I've done a lot of installing and uninstalling of software lately but can't pinpoint anything that might have caused it. This computer is about 2 years old. I have Vista 32 bit, service pack 2.
Anyone ever seen this before or have any ideas what the culprit might be? Really appreciate any advice.
OK, I connected a CRT monitor from another computer and it basically did it too. As the laptop screen was flashing off and on, the CRT screen went black and then came back on when the laptop went back to normal.
I think my graphics card is Intel Display Driver 7.15.10.1502. Does that sound right? I checked for an update through the Device Manager and it said no update is available. The same version is the only one listed at the Toshiba Downloads page. It's included with my Toshiba Application Installer so I'm tempted to uninstall/reinstall, but I'm afraid if it doesn't automatically install at at startup I won't have a monitor. Any advice on this or anything else is appreciated.

LCD goes blue/black after login; fine in Safe Mode
My mom's mac mini is experiencing a very frustrating problem.
She has an Acer 19 inch LCD. After startup she'll start up Safari or iChat or Mail, etc. and her display will go all blue and then just go black. Sometimes it will flicker back to usable and then go back to blue/black after a few more seconds.
We've been troubleshooting for a few days now and have discovered the following:
- When logging in under Safe Mode, the monitor works just fine.
- Removing all Login Items from her account doesn't help.
- Resetting the PRAM and trashing the plist file doesn't seem to help at all.
- Creating a new user account and logging in under that new test account doesn't help either.
So the bottom line is that Safe Mode works, but Normal mode does not.
Any help/ideas on what to try next?OK, that helps. So this is a wide Acer 19-inch? 1440 x 900 native? Interesting that in Safe mode it defaults to 1360 x 768.
What I would tell her to try is the following: Boot Safe and then go into Displays preferences and switch the resolution to 1024 x 768. Refresh should be 60Hz. Then restart normally. Often, when you switch resolutions in this way while in Safe mode, during a normal restart, that last selected resolution will persist allowing the screen to come up in 1024 x 768 booted normally. Then, have her go into Display preferences again and see if 1440 x 900 at 60Hz is a selectable option (I assume that is native). If it is, select it. Hopefully things will return to the way they were back when the monitor worked fine.
Since you are remote, it might be worthwhile for you to spend a little time and learn how to screen share remotely over iChat. It's pretty easy to do if you are both running Leopard and it will allow you to control her computer remotely so you can administer to it those times when she needs help. Good luck. -
Re: Satellite Pro A200 - Screen goes black after BIOS screen
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have quite a big problem. So any help is welcome and appreciated.
My Satellite Pro A200 goes black after the BIOS screen and a black screen with a blinking cursor. Also just before the screen goes black a bleep can be heard which shows windows is booting.
I can access the toshiba set-up screen but not the safety mode set-up.
Kind RegardsHello
You wrote that you can access the BIOS but have you checked if the HDD is recognized properly? Maybe the computer cannot boot because HDD isnt recognized so you should check this.
If the HDD is recognized I would try a recovery installation from Toshiba recovery disk. It seems that Windows isnt able to start and if you reinstall the whole system it should help to get rid of this. Just go in boot menu and select CD/DVD drive as boot device.

Laptop monitor goes black after connection external vga monitor
Hey,
I have a Qosmio G50-10H, running windows 7 32-bit. After connecting an external monitor the internal laptop screen goes almost black. It's possible to see some elements on screen, but it's to dark grey to work on. It does not respond much to color or brightness adjustment (black to really dark grey). The main trouble is when disconnection the external monitor the internal monitor still is dark grey and still isn't responding much to adjustments. It's so dark on the brigthest adjustments that it is impossible to work on. I have downloaded latest driver for support, but still same problem.
Any suggestions?Hi buddy,
That means the internal monitor is always dark grey even you start the notebook without external monitor?!
Well, in such cases it could be a LCD inverter malfunction. This part controls the backlight of LCD and if its defective, you can see a picture but its very dark/grey.
By the way: Do you notice the same behavior if you are in BIOS setup? So you can check if its Windows related problem or not.
In worst case you need help from an authorized service provider. They can check what the problem is exactly. -
Hp2010i Monitor goes black after a second or two
When I power on my desktop the monitor comes on for a second or two and then the screen goes black. I tried powering off the monitor and then back on and it goes black again after a second or two. I've checked all cables and connections and powered the complete system off for several minutes. The computer itself is setting up properly -it's just the monitor giving me problems. Suggestions?

HP monitor 2159m Black after 2 sec.
Hello,
My monitor a Hp 2159m is working perfect for a lot of years now.
But I have a problem now! When I turn my screen on (don't matter wich computer it is connected to) after 2
seconds it turns black. It is not on a specific moment in the startingproces of the computer, or login screen always.
I cleaned al conection points and I used diffrent cables and computers. It is clearly a problem in the screen.
Can you help?
Yours Faithfully,
StijnHi,
Did you try a monitor reset?
Power off the monitor and PC. Unplug the monitor from the PC and the electrical power. Now hold down the power button on the monitor for 60 seconds. Plug everything back in and power up the monitor and PC. You may have to set the Source input in the monitor's menu. Only use one active video source input and set that as the default in the monitor's menu.

Monitor went black after changing resolution
I changed my mac mini resolution to something higher. The screen went black and now it never shows anything on it anymore. I turned off the mac and the monitor but still the same problem when I turn the mac back on. How can I get to see the screen again?
Hello Bill,
Welcome again to the Apple Forums.
Most likely you have picked a screen resolution and/or screen signal frequency that is not compatible to drive your monitor.
You have a couple options available to you.
Option 1.
Restart your mini computer and turn off the monitor.
Let the mini computer start up completely.
The mini will detect no monitor is detected and default to a lower resolution and frequency setting.
Turn on your monitor after the mini has completed its start up.
Option 2.
Restart you mini computer and leave the monitor turned on.
Hold down the shift key on the keyboard after you hear the start up tone.
The mini will start up in Safe Boot mode and switch to a lower resolution and frequency setting.
Cheers

Monitor turns black after random interval
I have a Samsung SD850 32" monitor connected to my Mac mini (2012) using a displayPort cable.
When I startup the mac everything works fine, but after some random time (sometimes 10 minutes, sometime an hour) the screen turns to black.
Only by restarting the mac can I get my screen back, again for a few minutes, 20 minutes, ...If you mean the monitors Eco settings, then yes, I have disabled everthing...

2nd monitor went black after upgrading on macbook pro
Ive read post; however, i need help with getting 2nd mointor to work. it was working fine before upgrade but now jsut black. I was hoping there was a new solution to fix this thuderbolt / 2nd monitor thing. Im not comutuer tec. guy so I was hoping the apple systems where a good plug and play.
any help out there??
thanksMy best guess is that you have fried the RAM with static electricity charged up in your body. According to OGELTHORPE a beep on startup is because of no RAM, if when installing you did not do it correctly, you could have fried the RAM, which then your mac will not recognize it. The same with the old RAM, if you tried to re-install it and didn't pull up your sleeve and rest your arm on the inside of the chassis, then it is fried, or if you didn't wear an ESD band and connect it to the the chassis, then it is fried.
Seen as though you can't startup your mac, I can't say to do an AHT, buy some new ram, and start with the lowest one you can, so its cheap for ya use a different company incase is that;) Crucial.com is really good, I got an 8gb upgrade from 2gb. Let me tell you, it's great!
Reply back;)

Display monitor goes black after iMovie 3 opens up
Please help if you can, I hope it's not the monitor!
Every other application (including FCP and FCPHD) is working great, no problems with displays or anything, but as soon as I open iMovie and I click on any window in Edit mode, the entire screen goes black.
I am using eMac 1.25 GHz G4 with 768 MB of RAM and I just recently upgraded operating system to Tiger 10.4.8 I believe and to the latest Quicktime.
Please advise. Thank you. That was a new one.
Various "weird" behaviour is caused by a bad preferences file.
Quit iMovie.
In the Finder, go to:
Users:YourLoginName:Library:Preferences
Delete the file: com.apple.imovie3.plist
Try iMovie again. -
Screen flashes and then goes black after CPU load
Yesterday morning I upgraded my MacBook Pro 6,2 (Mid 2010) to OS X Lion. Since then I've been having issues while performing CPU-not-too-intensive tasks. Every once in a while my screen flashes for a split second and then turns completely black. The MBP is unresponsive so I'm forced to shut it down using the power button.
At first i though this was a Lion issue. However, it has happened again just now while I was on Windows through BootCamp. I was checking my e-mail and performing some other mundane tasks for about an hour, and then while trying to copy some files to an external Hard Drive my screen flashed and went black.
Hardware issue then??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It's already happened 4-5 times right when I pressed Cmd+D to bookmark a site on Safari. What the heck? That isn't even a CPU load.

T41P LCD WAS GOING BLACK AFTER A POST
I HAVE MANY T41P AND ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM .....WHILE OPEN SOMETIMES OPENS OK BUT AFTER WHILE THE LCD BLANK AND OTHER TIMES IS NO START AT ALL. I FIND THAT THE PROBLEM IS THAT ALL HAS GOT PROBLEM WITH THE VGA THAT IS ON BOARD....WHAT I MUST TO DO????I THINK THIS IS THE FACTORY PROBLEM AND IS NOT GOOD TO TELL TO OURS COSTUMER TO CHANGE THE BOARD AND PAY FOR IT....DO SOAMETHING
The T4x series have problem with the GPU failing due to loose connection, most likely due to excessive stress been applied after it was constantly miss handled by the user (i.e. holding the laptop on its edge with the screen open).... the only remedy is either to reflow the board (video showing how is available on Youtube) or get a replacement board...

Monitor goes black after apple logo startup
My family gave me a macbook pro 15 inch laptop. they bought it back in aug 2007. Everything has worked fine they told me until my sister had gotten into a small fender bender. But it was enough to send the laptop flying into some stuff in the back of the car, and dent the bottom of it. the problem is that the lap top starts up with gray screen and apple logo, then goes black, but the computer is still running. Also, if i hook it up to a external monitor, it works perfectly, as in it shows up on the external monitor. the dent is located on the botoom right hand corner if your looking at the computer head on. Also the computer gets hotter than usual. Any ideas on how to fix it? I'm a PC guy usually but would like to delve into macs also, so i would like to get this working. I'm running lepoard snow. Thats all i really know about it, any suggestions? I took it into the apple store and they said the logic board could be shorting out because of the aluminum hitting the logic board where the dent is. but if that was true, why would i get a display in the first place? any ideas.
Thank you for suggesting anyting, because it would help.Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are a couple of sites with teardown instructions:
http://www.ifixit.com/
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
Both of these sites also have some troubleshooting tips.
If it were mine, I'd take it apart and straighten out the bent metal. Also check the internal cable connections--it's possible the flex cables to the display may need to be reseated. The connections to an external display are different from the connections to the built in display, so the external could work even if the internal one did not.
It actually sounds like it survived the crash pretty well since it still boots up and runs. The shock may have dislodged some cables, and you need to check and see if the fans are working. You can download a widget from the Apple site called "iStatPro" which will display fan speeds and temperatures.
Did you get the system discs? If so, you may be able to boot to the Apple Hardware Test. If you can, run the extended version and see if you get any error codes. Not sure if you can run it using an external monitor, but it may be worth a try.
Post back if you have any questions. Good luck! -

MacBook freeze after desktop loads
I repaired permissions, and this still occurs. I have a new insall of OS 10.7 as I purcahsed a new HD for my MacBook.
Any ideas what would cause this?
Any ideas how to reover or force a reboot when it hangs? Right now I am just holding the power button until the MacBook powers off. You're responding to a post from five months ago. If that's how long you had to wait for the issue to reappear, it may never be resolved.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
