Satellite L100: CD/DVD Drive is not recognised in Bios or My Computer

Satellite L100 - 170 Model No.PSLA3E 02501QEN running Win XP.
The CD/DVD drive icon has disappeared from My Computer and is not listed in Device Manager or showing in the BIOS.
There is power to the drive and the tray ejects OK
I have tried using the Add New Hardware facility in Control Panel but it does not list a CD Drive.
I have removed the drive and then re-seated it but it made no difference.
I have used System Restore to the last available date 26th January 08 but it does not restore the CD drive...and I no it was working at that time.
I don't think this is a faulty drive as it is picking up power and when you insert a CD it starts up as though it were about to read the disk but nothing appears on screen.
The Laptop belongs to an Autistic child and all I can get out of him is 'I don't know' when asked what has happened to the Laptop.
Sorry I don't have any other information.
Can anyone help.
Thanks
Jan

Well, usually if the CD/DVD drive doesnt appear in the BIOS or the BIOS cannot recognize the ODD then the chances are that the CD/DVD drive would malfunctions.
But the best way to check this is a new OS installation. You should try to boot from a bootable XP CD.
If the notebook would be able to boot from the CD then the hardware is ok.

  • Satellite A100 CD/DVD drive is not listed in BIOS or device manager

    1. The original drive is not working. Upon inserting a disk the drive's light does shine and it does spin - but nothing further.
A little investigation shows no optical drive listed in the BIOS or Device Manager (naturally).
    2. Perhaps I'd like to reinsert the drive, but I can't find any instructions on the internet about removing/replacing this drive.
    Neither in the owner's manual.
Can someone steer me to these instructions?
    Many thanks

Owners manual is not the same as maintenance manuals. Please note that this is not the same and exact description about notebook disassembling procedure is for authorized service only.
Anyway, as far as I know the optical disc drive is fixed with one screw and it can be removed from the bottom side. The screw is placed near the memory cover exact over the optical drive. Not on the side of cooling vent but on the other side.
Be careful because all you do is on your own risk.

  • Satellite A40-151 DVD drive will not play DVDs

hi my dvd drive will play music cd's but when i try to play a dvd it just makes a beep and nothing happens i tried windvd and it comes on but everything is blurred and still wont play a dvd

    Hello John
Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.
    Good luck!

  • Satellite P25-S520 - DVD drive is not working properly

Fix DVD Drive or buy external drive
My DVD drive is not working properly, in fact it may never have been working proper. Recently I tried to back up my PC to a DVD using Norton 360. Norton did not recognize the DVD was present. I then tried writing a text file to a DVD and was unsuccessful. Both DVD+R and DVD-R media were tried (Maxwell 16X).
I could have probably lived with this however, I got a copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 10 on a CD and my Toshiba would not recognize it. I tried the CD in my neighbors laptop and it was recognized.
An attempt at updating the driver was also unsuccessful.
I was able to rip a music CD last night so that at least is working correctly.
Does anybody know how I can fix this? The important part is being able to load my new program.
Searching some forums I've found that other people have had problems with the Pioneer drive. If the drive cannot be fixed I am not adverse to buying an external DVD drive. Unfortunately where I live there are no brick-and-mortar stores which sell external drives and I would prefer to avoid the hassle of getting a drive online and discovering that it does not work with my Toshiba. Can anyone suggest an external USB drive which will read and write CDs and DVDs and which is certain to be compatible with my Toshiba?
    Thank you for any help,

Any external USB CD/DVD drive will be compatible with your laptop.
However you wont be able to boot of CD's (Run Recovery for example) if you use an external drive.
So your best option would be to replace the internal drive with a Toshiba drive designed for the laptop. Call an ASP and ask for a quotation.

  • Satellite A660 - DVD drive will not recognise some DVDs

    I have a new Satellite A660-17E with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N drive, running Windows 7 64 bit.
The drive will read most DVDs. Commercial DVDs (region 2) are fine. However, there are problems with DVDs recorded using DVD recorders. DVD+R recordings using a Philips machine work fine. DVD+R and DVD-R using a Sony HDX RDR 1095 machine do not work.
I'm hoping that the drive is ok and that this issue can be resolved by adjusting some setting or other?
    Any ideas?

It is most likely the issue is with the brand of dvd's you record with. as stated in the manual not all brands of recordable media are guaranteed to work with the dvd drive.
Also the sony recorder, i had a similar problem when playing the recorded dvd on another dvd machine, i found by adding a little more recorded info from the other machine onto the dvd it played fine after that. If you use DVD+R on the sony , record something on the laptop to the same dvd and then see if the dvd will play on the laptop.

  • DVD Drive is not recognised in My Computer on Satellite 300 - 11V

When I open My Computer all that appears is the Hard Drive Devices and Other Devices. I have looked in Device manager and in the option for the DVD drives there is a ! in a yellow triangle next to my DVD drive.
I have clicked on properties on the DVD drive and displays the drive is corrupt or missing (Code 39). I have used windows to search for solutions but there do not appear to be any. Are there any other ways to solve this problem?
    My OS is Windows Vista.

The first thing I recommend you is to remove the drive from the device manager. Then reboot your machine and boot Vista. After startup, it should reinstall the drive.
If not, then you can shortly check if your drive is malfunctioning: grab a CD or DVD which is bootable (e.g. the recovery disk) and check if the drive boots the CD.
But dont forget to set the CD/DVD as the first drive in the boot order.

  • DVD drive does not recognise CD/DVD

Ok. SO recently my G42-230US notebook computer just does not play CD/DVDs. The drive opens, the green light appears on the side but when I go to my computer, my DVD/CR ROM drive does not appear. Can I get some help with this problem?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
Check if the drive is now working.
If the drive is still not working, from the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • Satellite A300 - Cd/Dvd drive is not recognized by Windows

My cd/dvd drive has ceased to be recognized by windows (7). I'm not sure what has caused this because it was previously working and allowed me to install office 2010.
There appear to be no restore points shown around the time when it was working.

    Hi Robert Crockford,
In your case I would try deleting the upper and lower filters in registry for CD/DVD drive. This is described on official Microosft website how to do this, so just read the knowledge base article and follow the instructions:

  • Thinkpad L520 CD/DVD drive does not recognise or write to disks

Hi all. I hope as a newbie that I'm posting in the right area and not on a topic already covered. I've had my L520 for over a year now and have not previously needed to burn stuff to disk, so I do not know if my problem is new or old.
Essentially the drive recognises disks when they are inserted and accurately displays files already on the disk, but it gives available space as nil regardless of disk or existing file size. Additionally if a blank disk is inserted it will say that the disk cannot be read and to try formatting. These are standard preformatted disks I'm using. Please help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Written and finalised disks do not appear to have any capacity left, it is the way the CD file system works.
As for the empty disks, they are just empty, not pre-formatted. It seems to me you need a disk-burning application like Ashampoo Burning Studio Free or CDBurnerXP, which are free for personal use...

  • Satellite P200-1FC: CD/DVD drive will not start - error Code 10

My Satellite P200-1FC was purchased in January 2008 and preloaded with Vista Home Premium. The DVD/CD Drive is listed in device manager as "TSST corp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA Device".
At first the drive worked perfectly, but has recently refused to start. Device manager now shows it with a yellow exclamation mark and it's status is given as "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
Clicking check for solutions produces "could not load driver software" but no solution.
Searching similar questions in user forums suggests a use of a Microsoft Help & Support page headed "The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista".
However this involves modifying the registry! As a relative novice I am reluctant to do this unless I can find no easier way.
Must I bite the bullet and and enter this minefield, or is there a better way?

    >At first the drive worked perfectly, but has recently refused to start. Device manager now shows it with a yellow exclamation mark and it's status is given as "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
This error is definitely caused by a wrong registry entry.
I had such error several times ago and I have solved it removing the lower and upper filters from these registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    Here are some steps how it worked on my Windows system;
    - I removed the CD/DVD drive from the device manager
    - Then edited the registry as described above
    - Rebooted the notebook
Im sure it will help you too.
    Bye

  • Satellite Pro A210 DVD Drive not working - error code 39

    Hi All
My Satellite Pro A210 dvd drive is not loading.
When I looked into it it showed an error code 39.
I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but it's still not working.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
From my knowledge the error message 39 appears if the CD/DVD drive is not visible in the My Computer.
    You can try this workaround:
Go to device manager and delete the CD/DVD drive from the device list.
Then go to registry (regedit) and remove the upper and lower filters from the key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Then reboot the unit and test it again
    I think this should help!

  • Satellite P30-145: drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs

I have a Satellite P30-145 with a DVD SupermultiDL drive. When I first got the PC I could write dual layer DVDs without any problems. Now the drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs at all. Even ones from the same box that worked fine previously. I'm using Verbatim Double Layer DVD+R 2.4x discs.
After much searching on the internet I downloaded and ran DVDInfoPro. This application reported that the drive did not support DVD+RW DL. Very strange!!
Can anyone help? The drive is a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-831S.

    Hi Lan
This drive is definitely DL one but I can just imagine that drive is defective and can not calibrate lens in the right position. This notebook model is more that two years old and if you have used this drive intensively I can really imagine that DL function is defective.
What you can do is to clean the lens and see it this will help.

  • CD/DVD drive is not being recognised in Satellite L755-15R

Hi, Our L750 - 15R CD/DVD drive is not being recognised in my computer, we have updated drivers and used Microsoft fix to no avail, we aren't getting any error messages.
Any help .would be most appreciated.

Delete the ODD in the device manager.
Then remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Then restart the notebook and check if the CD/DVD drive would appear there.

  • Satellite L300 - after Win8 load DVD drive is not working

I have just loaded Windows 8 on my Satellite L300. The DVD no longer works with an error message 39 it says the driver is corrupt. Also external attached DVD's are not recognised. I cannot find a driver to reload.

    Check this article:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/bulletinDetail.jsp?pf=true&soid=3516888
If the TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator or TOSHIBA Disc Creator are installed on the HDD, there might be a issue between Win 8 and mentioned software
So uninstall these tools, then restart your PC using the Power-->Restart option in Windows 8. Your CD/DVD should be accessible now.
