Satellite L20: Modem doesn't get dial tone

Hi,
My L20 notebook doesn't get a dial tone whem I'm trying to dial up. On antoher pc the connection works well, so I'm sure that the line has a dial tone and that the other computer is 'listening'.
I also tried to uncheck the 'wait before dial tone' option, tried to remove it from the Device manager, but after this all the modem still doesn't work. The current driver that is installed is version 7.20.00.00, because I can't install the latest version (7.25.00.00) (setup doesn't finish well, no specific error is given).
Does anybody knows what to do??

Open the system control panel and choose the Phone and modem options.
There check the Modems tab. The modem should be placed in the list.
If not, so you need to install the modem driver.
Check the Modem function by pressing the "Query Modem" button.
If the Modem Information window contain a list of AT commands (including ATI2, ATI3, ATI4 etc.), then the modem is correctly installed. The ATI5 command ends in with the number for the selected Regional settings (for example Germany = 06).
To change the Regional Setting please use the Toshiba Internal Modem Region Select Utility.

  • Internal Modem Not Getting Dial Tone - Failed or Settings? Solution?

I have just refurbished my old G4 FP iMac for my grown son to use. He has only dial-up service. There is a dial tone on the phone line (verified via telephone handset). After an attempt to connect, I get a "no dial tone" message. I hear no audio of the dial tone or connection sequence, even with volume fully open. Believing the internal modem had failed, I purchased an in-line Apple external USB modem. I obviously did not read the fine print carefully enough, because in troubleshooting I ran across a note saying that I need 10.4 or later to use the external modem. I have 10.3.9 installed, and 10.4 costs about $150 these days. That's a lot of $$ to solve what might be a simple modem or system settings problem. Or maybe I don't really need 10.4?
Also wondering (if it is a failed internal modem) whether I can purchase and replace the inernal modem itself.
    Any suggestions?

    Fixed problem myself

  • Upgraded to 10.3.9 and now modem won't recognize dial tone or connect 2 isp

    Hello,
My ibook was erased completely. SO, I installed 10.3.5 fresh. Then I verified permissions and installed the 10.3.9 update which is what I am using now. I tried to enter my internet connection settings (username, pass, phone number provider, etc).
When I press dial, I listened to the modem to see if it connects. It just dials VERY loudly and the dial tone(sounds really low) ignores the dialing and is still there(but you can hardly hear it). I tried changing the setting from tone to pulse dialing and it dialed and got the modem connecting sound but after two minutes of sound, it disconnects and says verify your modem settings and try again. So it gets to the Isp using pulse and the modem noise from the isp is going on and on but then disconnects, it never catches the isp. It doesn't even dial correctly using tone dialing. The dialing is Loud as I don't know what, but the dial tone seems so low on the computer, it seems as though the computer cannot hear the modem connecting to the isp so it never connects. I don't know.
I was wondering if there was an update for the modem or firmware update or what because I cant get it to logon. All passwords are correct because I am using my 12 in ibook with dual usb and the internet connection itself works fine.
Any suggestions? (I tried to use it changing the script to v.92 , v.90 or v.34)

    Hi emeraldcleopatra,
Why not mimic the settings you have for your 12" iBook that connects, trying the same for the one that doesn't and checking each setting that you have played around with.
    See if that works.

  • Faxing - Modem Does Not Detect Dial Tone

    Hello Everyone,
I suddenly have a need to send and receive a Fax. I have a phone line plugged into the modem port on my G4 and on trying to send a text fax, not much happens. Error message to the effect that the modem is not detecting a dial tone. Same cable that works fine on the phone itself.
Can someone either help with an answer or direct me to a page with more detailed instructions than the "Help" file is providing?
    John

I have the same problem. I thought I would begin to use my several years old Powerbook to send a simple fax. As it is I have to use my old G3 to fax. Even with Faxstf pro on I still can't get it to work. Fax STF says that the modem is only set to receive and I just cannot change it in the settings. I've trashed the preferences and the program. I am at a loss after having spent a day trying to figure this out. I am on a dedicated phone line that works just fine. I would really like to just simply fax from my powerbook G4. The modem is as follows:
    Modem Model: LastDash
    Interface Type: USB
    Modulation: V.92
    SKU Name: UCJ
    Hardware Version: 4.0
    Firmware Version: APPLE VERSION 2.6.6
    Driver: InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.6)
Country: B5 (United States, Latin America)

  • Satellite L20-153 can't get the WLAN to work

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my wifes laptop that I havent been able 2 solve.
Her windows crashed and wouldnt start the marker in "DOS" just keept blinking and nothing happend I tried to restore to latest previous working windows , but that didnt help nor did the failsafe mode. So I took out the recovery CD/DVD and tried make a fresh installation the install setup worked fine until it asked me 2 take out the disc and restart the comp which I did.
When it rebooted the same problem appeared (blinking marker and nothing happens).
So what I did was I took out a normal windowes XP (SP2) and reinstalled eveverything ( I formated the drive also) and rebooted and it worked.
So then 2 my next challenge was 2 get all the hardware working all I got all working but the WLAN (built-in).
After I had installed everyting I saw my wireless network but next time I started the comp it was gone along with all other WLAN that I use to be albe 2 see. and when I refreash its still empty.
I have tried to inactivate it and then activate it again but it doenst help.
I also tried once more to use the Toshiba recevory disc but got the same problem.
So now Im back with my own windows Xp installed on it but I cant get the WLAN to work.
    There isnt any hardware conflics.
So now I need your help on how 2 proceed.
    tanks alot.
    Regards,
    Quickhat

    Hello
About WLAN there is actually no philosophy and few things are important:
The WLAN card must be installed properly (properly listed in device manager) and
It must be also enabled. At first with WLAN switch (WLAN LED is ON) and then enable it using FN+F8 key combination.
After doing this WLAN card should see all available WLANs. To connect one of them is another theme.
To be honest I didnt understand what happen exactly. If I understand you right your notebook can see WLANs but after restart all available WLANs are not visible anymore. Am I right about that?
Have you tried to restart your WLAN router and scan the WLAN area again?

  • Internal modem/fax: no dial tone

    Hi folks,
Yes, another 'no dial tone' problem
I have a 20" iMac G5 running 10.4.8 in the U.K. that seems unable to make a connection via it's internal modem to the internet or dial out to send a fax. Whenever it tries to make a connection it will eventually timeout after ~10 seconds claiming there is no dial tone - there is a dial tone on the line however. I've had a look through other posts mentioning things like this but there doesn't really seem to be any solutions out there that I can see. After just going out to Kinkos to send a fax for the princely sum of £8 (~$16) I'd like to finally get this flippin' thing working!
The following things have been tried:
    - The modem has been connected to a regular phone line (connected telephones have a normal steady dial tone, no answerphone tone you can get with BTs 1571 service in the UK)
    - The modem has been connected to an active DSL phone line via the filtered phone socket
    - Different phone cables have been tried
    - A different user account behave exactly the same
If it makes any difference, this iMac was originally bought in Switzerland. The international preferences have been corrected to make the iMac think it is London. I've never been able to get the modem to work, so I'm not sure if the modem is at fault, or if it's an OS X problem...
If anyone has any ideas/suggestions, I'm willing to try anything.
    Cheers.

"Q: Why my modem is not getting Dial Tone?
    6. Many voicemail systems use a "stutter" dial tone or beeping when you pick up the phone to indicate that you have voicemail waiting. These unexpected sounds can make the modem think there is no dial tone.
    7. In extreme case, your modem may not be designed for the phone system in the country in which you are trying to use it."

You can also run into problems with dial tones overseas. Your computer may not recognize the dial tone of the country you are in as a "dial tone." Depending on the modem software you are using, you might need to put a check in the Ignore Dialtone checkbox in your modem software setup window.
    What about digital telephone systems?
Modems communicate using analog or sound signals while many new telephone systems use digital signal processing. Digital systems are unable to process analog signals, making it impossible for modems to communicate.
Seems that there very well might be some diff in the Modems between Switzerland and UK...

  • Fax/no dial tone

    Hi
I have been trying to send a fax for the first time on my G4.
I have followed the help that is available on the Mac website and have even called technical support who didn't do very much except e-mail me some information available on the suport website!
I am connected to the internet (broadband) via a usb modem which only reads digital signals, and the connection is running through ethernet adaptor in my network settings.
I have a broadband filter supplying the modem at the phone socket which also has a separate branch for my phone line.
I got a regular phone cable (one end fits into the phone socket and has smaller fitting on the other end) and I first tried sending a fax via the phone branch on my filter and the internal modem slot on my Mac and after the system tried to send the fax, it told me that there was no dial tone.
Next, i checked that the phone cable worked (which it did) and tried to go direct between the internal modem slot and the phone socket with the same result as before. I only have one phone socket and no answer machine so I dont think anything is interrupting the analouge signal.
Has this happen to anybody else? Can anyone help me?
It would really help me ouy as I dont really know what else I can do and technical support hasn't really helped!
    Thanks

  • Need Help with iMac G4     No Dial Tone

    I am working on a friend's iMac G4 800 Mhz. Has Mac X 10.2.3 OS. Internal Apple 56K V.90 Modem.
The modem gives error "no dial tone". This just recently started happening for no apparent reason. Tried different phone cable and tested the wall jack for dial tone on a connected phone. All tests OK.
This modem is "built in". Is this problem fixable? Is it a hardware or a settings issue?
The only fix I can think of is an external modem, but would like to fix the internal one if possible.
Any ideas? Any and all advice is appreciated. I'm new to Macs, so I have limited knowledge of the system.
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Dial tone but unable to make calls.

    Hi,
I had BT Infinity installed on the 10th Feb 14. About a day or two after it all switched off for about 30 mins. When the phones and internet came back online the phones would not ring out.
Whether the phones are plugged into the master socket or either extension they are unable to make external calls yet there is a dial tone.
If I plug the phone in to the test socket then it works fine. This has only ever been an issue since the new faceplate and installation of BT infinity.
When I went to plug the phone into the test socket I noticed an orange and white wire that has seemingly come out of its connection but as to where I don't know. The other 3 cables are still in.
    Also internet is working fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Dave

    SegaMegaDave wrote:
None of the extensions work, I get the same thing. A dial tone but unable to ring out.
So before I order one is this looking to be a faceplate fault? Thanks for all your help.
    Dave
If you get dial tone with the faceplate disconnected, then the fault is within your own wiring, and it means that the extensions are wired up wrong. You either pay BT to sort it out, or get an independent telephone technician.
This diagram showns the correct way it should be wired.
    http://forumhelp.dyndns.info/infinity/infinity_wiring2.jpg
Its most likely that whoever did the Infinity installation, forgot to check for any "star" wiring. ie. extensions connected before the master socket. Its quite often the contractors that forget to do this. The Openreach people usually know what they are doing.
There is nothing else I can suggest, as it appears that the faceplate is not at fault, as the phone and broadband both work fine from the master socket faceplate.

  • Infinity Works No Dial Tone

    Hi
I have a fault with my Infinity faceplate, infinity works fine but I have no dial tone, I reported this to BT yesterday and followed it up with a call this morning to explain that I have dial tone at the test socket but not after slotting in the infinity faceplate
After 10 deifferent people I have been left in the following situation
Because the line is OK and I get dial tone from the master test socket , BT are quoting £130 to replace the infinity faceplate, no matter how many times I explain that the fault is with the opeanreach equipment they insist that it's a fault in my premisies beyond the test socket so I am liable to pay for the repair.
Please help, the last person I s[poke to told me to buy a new one, I don't understand why I have to buy a new faceplate which is part of the BT service.
    Regards
    Nigel

All they are going to do is run a test from their side of things and if no fault shows up then they say what ever the system shows them. £130 is provisional as they are being called out for unknown reasons (even if you know what the cause is) In all honesty i'd reccomend the mods on here and seeing if they can help in any way.

  • No dial tone through SPA112 ATA box

I can't get my analgue phone to work thru the Cisco SPA112 ATA box - problem has been ongoing for 2.5 months now.
My ISP can access the ATA through their network and assure me everything is configured and working correctly.
My wireless (wimax) internet connection works fine.
My phone used to work thru the ATA box, but I have had no dialling tone since it suddenly stopped working in early Oct. 2014.
I've tested my phone & cables on a BT land line - cables and phone all work on a land line.
My ISP provided a replacement ATA box - I still get the same problem of no dial tone on my phone via the ATA.
I've also taken my ATA box & phone setup to my parents' house to test setup and equipment on mains power & their land line broadband connection -  I still could not get a dialling tone.
My ISP is adamant the problem is with my phone and/or home power system, and not with the VOIP set they are providing me.
(NOTE: I live off grid - the house power is provided from a 12 V battery bank through a 230V true sine wave inverter.)
I've just bought a new mains powered Binatone phone & I still get no dialling tone, nor can I make or receive calls.
Since my ISP has given up on me and blaming my home power supply and/or phones, can someone please advise me if the problem might lie with:
    1) My phones
    2) the SPA112 ATA box
    3) My VOIP configuration
The problem has become exasperating - and I need a working phone for reliable communications. Going back to BT is NOT an option since I still have to wait an unspecified period of time to get a broadband service via BT or any other provider.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One easy way to test if your device is working is to register for a free voip service. Here is a list http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Free+VoIP+Networks .
That will allow you to test with a different provider and credentials.  be aware the free service is frequently limited to making calls on that providers network, but it should allow you to make a call.
You can update the firmware on your ATA to the latest.  Download the latest here https://software.cisco.com/portal/pub/download/portal/select.html?&mdfid=283998771&flowid=30521&softwareid=282463187
What does it say for the status of line 1 on the information page of the GUI? registered/failed?  if it says registered, you should get dial tone.  if it has failed, your credentials or network connection may be incorrectly configured.
You can test your analog phone set by finding a friend who has an analog phone line and taking it there, or
plug your analog phone into line 1 and hit 4 stars ( **** ) you should get a voice menu.  Hit 110 to have it read the IP address of the device.  This will let you know if the phone is working (at least basically)
If you are still under warranty, you could call into the small business support center, we could try  a couple things.
We could use your credentials on one of our test devices here to see if your provider settings work.  If not we can help you follow up with your provider.
Here is the small biz support numbers:

  • Regular dial-tone disappearance

sometimes i get dial-tone but mostly not. When i don't - my corded phone does not  work even in the test socket.
Is there any way my BB/BT vision could cause this to happen.
I do not seem to have a problem with incoming calls except that they can cut me off if i am already on a call.
if i receive an incoming call when there is no dial tone, i will then have a dial tone for 10 minutes before it goes again.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

High and welcome to the forum.
It sounds like you have a high resistance fault on you line, this can clear with an incoming call. Do you get the same issue when you plug a known working phone without an ADSL filter into the test point of your main socket?
If you do you will need to report the problem to your comms provider, if it is BT give them a call on 151 from a BT line or 0330 123 4151 from a mobile.

  • In some cases modem in Satellite L20 doesn't work

    Hello,
a friend had bought a Satellite L20 last summer. In January she began to work on the Internet irregularly but has experienced trouble. So I looked after the notebook last week:
When trying to connect to the Internet the connection to the provider sometimes fails. If she finally gets the connection there often occurs the message that the page couldn't be found and only after clicking on the button "Refresh" several times the page finally shows up. But oddly enough, every time I disconnected the power supply the connection became noticeable better.
(Win XP; driver/diagnostics: no problems showed up; provider works fine on different computers)
Unfortunately, there was no chance to check the connection right there with different hardware. I can't tell if the last driver is installed but think so because of the date of purchase. So, my guess is that the power cable isn't sufficiently shielded. But if so what to do? Or what else could be the reason for the unexpected behavior of the modem?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hello
I have heard about similar problem on some other Satellite model. Solution was to install modem driver from Satellite A110. Please dont ask me why but test it.
The modem driver you can find HERE
    Good luck!

  • Satellite A30: Software modem - no dial tone

I have reinstalled English XP on a machine purchases in SPain.
The modem has no connection as all - no dial tone can be heard.
I have installed the latest drivers, cables all OK. Telephone line works
The modem looks for COM3 but there are no COM ports in device manager.

    Hi
I dont think that this issue has something to do with the com ports. The com port is a virtual port.
You should be sure that you have installed a modem driver for Spain form the Toshiba website driver.
Secondly please go to the modem properties, select the modem tab and disable the option wait for dial tone before dialing
