Satellite L300-19F doesn't boot up - Windows failed to start

My notebook doesn't start up, "Windows failed to start. To fix the problem: restart with recovery CD".
I may do this, but first I do want to try to save data (and pics) from hard disk.
Is it possible, for example, to go to DOS during start up with recovery CD, and copy data to USB-stick?
By the way, all my data is on E:\ partition. Will this be overwritten when installing from recovery?
Please advise. Regards.

> Is it possible, for example, to go to DOS during start up with recovery CD, and copy data to USB-stick?
No, this is not possible!
If you would boot up using recovery disk then the recover procedure would be started and the whole HDD would be formatted!
You can try to boot using an WinPE
http://www.livecd.com/
This will allows you to boot up the unit and to get access to the data on the HDD
You could also built own Windows live CD

• Computer won't boot to windows - Fail in Start-Up Tests - Possible Hardware Issue

My mate has given me his laptop to try and fix but when i runf the hp start up tests id comes up with this:
can anyone help?

Hi,
Now the image is viewable, it would look like the Hard Drive has failed and will need to be replaced.
As a further test, if you wish to rule out a possible ( although far less likely ) problem with the sata controller, you try the following.
1. Create a bootable Ubuntu CD - a guide on creating an Ubuntu CD and the download can be found Here.
2. When created, follow the guide on the link below to Try Ubuntu.
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/try-ubuntu-before-you-install
The 'Try Ubuntu' option runs the OS from the CD without the need to install on your HDD. If this runs Ok ( it will be slow running from a CD ), this would tend to confirm that the problem is just with the HDD.

• 0xc000025 - Trying Recovery System via Recovery Manager: Windows failed to start.

Name: Pavilion dv4-2161nr
Prod. Number: WA691UA#ABA
Windows 7 64-bit
I splitted original Hard Disk Partition in three partitions. I formatted those two not containing O.S. Now I want to format the partition containing the O.S.
1) If I choose "Recovery System", will it format all three partitions? Or will it format the partition I choose to?
2) I tryed "Recovery System", but it failed. What can I do?
2.1) I made Recovery DVDs when first used the PC. It loads but it never runs. It's like theres no AutoRun, and there's no ".exe" to execute when I open the first DVD Recovery via Windows Explorer. What am I missing?
2.2) I tryed Recovery System via Recovery Manager. System shuts down and starts reiniciating but it gives the following message "Windows Boot Manger: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the problem. Status: 0xc000025. The boot selection failed because a required device is inacessible". What can I do?
Regards,
Rafael.

I tested the Hard Drive and it passed 100% ok.
I tested the Memory and it passed 100% ok.
My PC runs a Win 7 Home Premium.
I've just run a Win 7 Ultimate CD Installation. It formatted the System Partition, but I couldn't get Win 7 installed because when I filled in my Product Key it said the Product Key wasn't right. Is it because Product Key for Win 7 Home Premium wouldn't work on a Win 7 Ultimate installation?
I hoped the Hard Drive would be ok after it had been formatted while I tryed Win 7 Ultimate installation. So I tryed once again to boot with HP Recovery Disc. It stopped at 23% once again. Until 23% there are all noises that get me thinking PC is running ok. When it get up to 23% all noises just stop.
Any ideias?
And thanks once again.
Rafael.

• Windows Failed To Start & Startup Repair Doesn't Work!!!!

I have an HP Pavilion dv5-2135dx laptop... I don't know what went wrong but I randomly have a "Windows Error Recovery" screen when i turn it on: "Windows Failed to Start. A recent hardware/software change might be the cause" and i can either choose "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally" BUT when i attempt to start windows normally, it goes back to the "Windows Error Recovery" Screen. If i click "Launch Startup Repair" it doesn't do anything but stay on another screen and i've let it be on that screen for a whole day and nothing happens. I've tried safe mode and again it goes back to the "Windows Error Recovery" screen. I've tried all the debugging options and it goes back to the error screen. When I shut it down and tapped F10 to enter the bios menu, i went under the diagnostic tab and ran both the Hard Drive Test and Memory Test. Here are the results:
Primary Hard Drive Test- Hard Disk Full (305)
Memory Test- Passed
But i have no idea what that means because my laptop is brand new and it has 500gb... so the harddrive shouldnt be full. I'm in need of help because I don't know what to do after looking through abunch of forums... Please help me.

• Windows failed to start on Satellite L510

Hi :)
I am not very tech savvy, I have only had my laptop a month. And yesterday when I turned it back on I got this message....
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administration or computer manufacturer for assistance.
file: \boot\bcd
status: 0x000000f
info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration
I have been all over these forums and the internet searching for a solution but no luck. It is the weekend so I cannot contact the service line.
I would appreciate a step by step process of whatever it is I need to download or reboot. I do not have the windows installation disc as it did not come with my laptop.
I really do appreciate your help in advance ;)

Hi
Well, the error message says everything for me. Insert the Windows disk *or* contact the manufacture (Toshiba). ;)
By the way: It would be interesting to know if you can boot in safe mode. Check this!!
If yes you could start the HDD recovery. Therefore select Repair my Computer in advanced boot menu and follow the screen instructions.
Yes, with the notebook didnt come a disk but you can create one!!!
Please read the user manual always first.
Now its too late to create such a disk but you can order a new one from Toshiba directly:

• Satellite C660D froze and does not start - Windows failed to start

Ok pretty much the most dense person you will ever likely to meet when it comes to things like this. but will try my best to explain.
Couple of days ago my laptop froze on me resulting on me having to turn it off and start it again by the power button. When I started it again the message below appeared.
WINDOWS ERROR RECOVERY
Windows failed to start . A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
If windows files have been damaged or configured in incorrectly, start up repair can help and diagnose the problem, if power was interrupted during start up, choose start windows normally.
-Launch Start up repair (recommended)
-Start windows normally
When I press Launch Start up repair it goes to a screen with a big cursor (which you can move around) but nothing else happens.
When I pressed on the start windows normally setting it went through to the windows logo whilst starting up but then stalls at this point.
My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense :p
Thanks for looking
Dean

>My question is, is it easy to fix & if not where is the best place to take it to get fixed. Said I was pretty dense
I think its easy to fix but you would need an Toshiba Recovery disk.
Did you create one in the past?
If not, try to start the HDD recovery: power up the unit, press F8. Now choose Repair my Computer.
Now new Window should open and here you should choose Toshiba HDD recovery option. This would set the notebook back to factory settings.
In case this isnt possible, you would need to boot from a recovery disk to reinstall the system.

• After restore windows boot manager says windows failed to start. CQ57 notebook

Had a problem with the FBI scareware. Took it to a cmputer repair place. They wanted $250 to fix it and now it won't boot up at all. It did the HP system restore but when it rebooted the Windows Boot Manager says "Windows failed to start". It wants an installation disc. THen :
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
Is it trying to boot from the wrong partition?

Enter BIOS setup by tapping/holding the F10 key immediately after powering on the laptop.Use Diagnostics to test your hdd.
If you haven't burned a Recovery Disk set, phone HP to order one.Usually around $17. Choose your country here>> Contact HP

Hi Bwald,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion g6 Notebook and getting a Windows Failed to start. Try performing a hard reset. When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. You could try a system restore. Here is a link on what to do when System Restore fails. If that does not help you will need to return the BIOS to factory defaults. In this document it gives you a step by step to resolve the boot device error.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

• Boot Up Error 0xc0000034 - windows failed to start

I came back from work yesterday and found my laptop displaying a black screen saying that "windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" and to repair using the windows 7 installation disc.
However windows was pre-installed on my machine so i dont have a disc. I left it on during the day so i can only assume it restarted due to an auto update.
I only got this computer the other day and i really dont need this hassle.
Any ideas??
Ta

> However windows was pre-installed on my machine so i dont have a disc.
You didnt receive any disks because there was preinstalled software called Toshiba Recovery Disk creator.
This allows you to create recovery disk which would help to restore the OS.
But usually there should be a HDD recovery option too.
Try this:
Press F8, choose Repair my Computer, HDD recovery.
If this will not help, then you will need the recovery disk. You can order this here:

F1 and F8 do not work only F2 and F12

Can't tell from that which discs you have. You should boot to the Windows Recovery Environment.
What are the system recovery options in Windows 7?
Try things in this order.
Startup Repair
System Restore
At the command prompt, run this.
chkdsk c: /r

• Windows failed to start: Insert Windows installtion disk?

Satellite A205-S5843
Windows Update the night before. Next day, the browser was stalling. Eventually Task Manager reported Web Site Browser was not running. I closed down all programs and hit Restart. At the restart all that came on was a small image like when an image is loading. It continued for 20 minutes. None of the buttons would do anything, not even the power button or escape button. I finally unplugged the machine. Now when I turn on the power, I get the following message...
=============
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disk and restart your computer.
2. Choose language settings. Click next.

============
Things I have tried:
Disks. I do not have the Windows disk. The recovery disk I made and filed when I purchased the machine gave the same error.
Various button combinations. F8 key + power button. 0 (zero) key + power button. F2 and F12 are the only buttons I can access. I tried Reset to Defaults. Same results on power start.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Recovering to the factory default setup, and rebuilding from there, while not always necessary, is still a good thing every now and then, especially if your system has become quite messed up or corrupted.
I am glad you were able to work it out with your Toshiba Recovery disks. In double checking your specs, it would seem your system never came with the Recovery Partition on your hard drive. Otherwise, there would have been the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator program listed on your pre-installed software, which it is not. So, keep those Recovery Disks safe, and maybe think of making disk copies of each to have a spare.

The following 2 links should help with the issues you are having. I would suggest attempting a system restore first (not I repeat not a system recovery) make sure you are doing the restore option or you will lose everything.
