Satellite L300-20W - DVD's will not play

Satellite L300-20W.
Laptop plays CD's fine in WMP.
However if I try to play a DVD I get the message "Windows Medial Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."
If I try to use Toshiba DVD player, a box opens (with clouds in it) and almost immediately I get the message "Toshiba DVD Player has stopped working" and then "Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" but of course it never does advise me.
Any help very much appreciated. (Old man and not very technical)
Many thanks.

Hi
Regarding the error code: Windows Medial Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."
It seems that your Windows Media Player does not contain the needed DVD decoder plug-in which allows you to watch DVDs.
Please check this MS knowledge base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306331
I recommend also installing an codec which allows you to watch other videos stored in other formats.
K-lite Mega Codec Pack is for free and contains all needed codecs.
If you are not able to use the Toshiba DVD software then you should reinstall this tool.
I think the newest version is released on Toshiba European driver page.

hi my dvd drive will play music cd's but when i try to play a dvd it just makes a beep and nothing happens i tried windvd and it comes on but everything is blurred and still wont play a dvd

    Hello John
Please dont be mad on me but in your posting there is no question or something just small report that DVD drive will not play DVDs.
Anyway, if I am remembering well your unit is about 2 years old and has probably DVD-CDRW (Combo) drive. In my opinion there is no much to do. If the drive has problem with original DVDs I presume that there is laser calibrations problem and the device must be replaced.
I dont know how old is your unit exactly but please check if the warranty is still valid. If yes contact service partner in your country immediately. The drive should be replaced for free. If not you must replaced it on your own. If the drive replacement costs too much I recommend you to use external device (I do it with my old Satellite). On this way I can use newest and very fast super multi DL devices and also create own DVDs.
You can also try to find already used DVD/CD-RW drive and replace it alone. If you need assistance by replacement please write again.
Once again, dont be mad on me. I am ready to write my opinion but it is really annoying when someone write just one sentence and nothing more.
    Good luck!

  • DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files from my hard drive

When logged into my home account DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files that are on my hard drive. I get an error message: "there was a problem opening the media. Media type is not supported." When logged in as "root" DVD player does play these same files. Also, when logged in to my home account, I can play these same files in VLC.

Go this this thread for more details:

But the gist of the fix is to delete or rename "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" and let the DVD Player build a new one. It seems that this is caused by a migrated PPC preference that borks DVD Player 5 on Intel Macs, which is what just happened to me. Hope this helps.

This could be several things, but let's get the obvious ones out of the way, first:
    1. Judging from your text, there's no problem with anything stuck in the mechanism; it's more an issue of no being to put in a disk. In other words, you're sure that there isn't a disk stuck in your MBP. (That happens a lot for all computers.)
    2. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, and repair the disk. This should take under 10 minutes.
    3. Perform the procedure outlined here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?
    4. After you're done, leave a message here as to the status of the repair.

  • Some DVD's will not play.

Three of my commercial DVD's will not play on my Powerbook. Almost all of my DVD's do. These three will play on my wife's Sony laptop and on my Panasonic DVD Player/Recorder. However, the Apple DVD player either fails to read or starts up the program and fails uppon entering the main menu. I get either a DVD fayal read error or an error message that state the DVD's may be scratched or damaged (which they're not). Any one else having this problem? Also, is it a software or hardware problem or both?

Hello selinahillier, Many times when this happens the DVD laser has become faulty. I have removed the DVD drive, and the DVD drive case, and used a soft cloth and some cleaning solution to clean the DVD Laser and managed to get the DVD working again.
Since DVD drives are as inexpensive as they are now, it might be best to just purchase a new one.
These can be purchased for less than $20.00 USD now.
Here  is a link to NewEgg where these drives can be found.
    Just some thoughts.

  • DVD Drive will not play ANY movies

I seem to have the standard drive for the 15 inch MacBook Pro (bought less than one year ago), but it simply will not play ANY movie DVD I've tried. It whirrs and whirrs but nothing happens. I've tried multiple movies and none have worked. Yet it works fine with software cd's and loading on of new programs, and burned CDs with pictures display just fine. I checked the System info on the drive and notice that the last line - which is media - had a 'no' next to it. Is it not turned on or programmed to play movies??? If so, how do I activate it? Thanks for any help.

My MBP plays DVD and says no also, so that is not it. Sounds broken to me. Call Applecare and I do hope you paid for the 3 year Applecare. Did it EVER play DVDs?

  • HT4718 After burning a slideshow from iPhoto export to a DVD, it will not play on my DVD player OS X 10.9.4

iMac 27' OS X 10.9.4 I burned a slideshow from iPhoto export to a DVD and now it will not play back on anything. The player said Unknown disc. What can i do?

I do find that using one of these programs will reduce the sharpness of the photos.
Granted, I've never used iPhoto - I use Photo to Movie for slideshows and various versions of iMovie for videos, but my pics are excellent quality and my videos are shot in 1080p (better camera)  or 720p (small camera) and the results are superb on my TV using both iDVD and Toast. However, I do not encode in iDVD, I simply use it to add a theme and menus. The encoding is done by Photo to Movie, or iMovie 06 HD (the only version ever to process losslessly) and either/both are imported into iDVD as a complete .mov, or Toast.
Since using those methods, I've never had a problem with the sharpness or crispness of my footage. My eyes cannot discern a difference between my "production" and true HD (unless of course I shook the camera while shooting, LOL).

  • Burnt DVD's will not play

I am using a iMac 700MHz G4 using Tiger 10.4.3 attempting to copy a home DVD using Mactheripper and Popcorn having to burn the DVD on an external Lacie DVD +/- Slim using Toast 6 Lite.
    1) Mactheripper placed a TS folder onto my desk top.
    2) I dropped the folder into Popcorn which went completely through procedures about twenty minutes later a Pop Up appeared advising me that the disk was finished. I was shown three bars, Verification, Mount and Eject. Eject was flashing so I ejected the disk.
When I examined the new DVD the disk had been burnt but when I try to play it on either my Mac or home DVD player, I see the DVD remote shown on a blank screen. I can hear the disk spinning but it will not play and eventually ejects.
If I replace the new DVD into the Lacie drive it will eventually play back onto my Mac but takes a while to connect.
I also tried copying straight from my Mac into Pop Corn not using Mactheripper, Pop Corn went through the same procedure again I got a disk that would not play.
    Any ideas please
    Mike

    Kay
I am nearly there I used DVD-R discs and verified the disc through Popcorn. I produced a perfect Wedding DVD which plays on my home DVD player and also plays through the Lacie rewriter onto my Mac.
When I try to play it on my Mac I get the following pop up.
DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from.
There was an error reading from disc. It might be scratched or dirty (-36).
I have noticed that DVD player does not show the screen remote control now without going back into the DVD player application and opening it again from Applications.
I am using DVD Player 4.6
    Thanks so far.

  • DVD Player will not play image files (Snow Leopard 10.6.2)

I am having a problem with my DVD Player. It will no longer play dvd iso files. Instead I get this error: "There was a problem opening the media: The media type is not supported"
What is really strange about this is that the audio from the DVD would play just fine, but there would not be an accompanying video window.
I find it hard to believe that when upgrading from leopard to snow leopard that the iso file format would become unsupported.
I have also tried to create my own DVD .img file and it too would not play in DVD Player giving me the same error message. Is there anything I can do to get my image files to play on this computer?
Message was edited by: Imperial Hawk

Change the file extension from img. to iso
Many obscure file formats are not accepted by DVD Players and require you to either change the format or get a converter. here read these they will help you a ton.

  • DVD player will not play widescreen video properly...

I just created a widescreen DVD on iDVD that I was planning on watching on a standard sized television, meaning, I was expecting black bars on the footage.
I popped the DVD into my Panasonic DVD player and it seems it enlarges the video and crops out the sides.
I do not get any black bars.
When I play the DVD on another machine and on my computer, the black bars appear and everything is fine.
    Why does this happen?
My Panasonic player is at least 5 years old, if that makes any difference. I did not change any settings on it either.
I'm just worried because I have to make several copies of this DVD for people and I don't want there to be any problems.
I would really appreciate any help so that I can avoid such issues.
    Thanks!

    Hello Joaquin,
iDVD 6 used to output DVDs in "auto letterbox & pan/scan" which means it will display at whatever your DVD player is set to. To avoid a widescreen video being displayed fullscreen you would have to force letterboxing for any 4:3 device. This can be done with myDVDedit (http://www.mydvdedit.com/).What it does is edit the IFO file of the DVD, which is the file telling the DVD player what to do with the disc.
There are a number of help files and tutorials on the site ... if you run into problems, post back
    hope this helps

  • GX660 DVD drive will not play video DVDs

For some reason the DVD drive in my GX660 refuses to recognise video DVD discs.
DVDs with binary data and audio CDs will be read fine, but inserting a video DVD --any video DVD-- just results in an enormous amount of seeking sounds from the drive before Windows 7 finally gives up on it a reports the drive as empty.
I've had the GX660 for just under a year, during which time the DVD drive has been used very sparingly -- maybe for the installation of no more than a dozen programs.  Never been used for burning DVDs or CDs. Never been used for reading video DVDs which is why I discover it at this late date.
Any ideas concerning this issue, before I turn in the laptop for service?  I'd rather not have to.

In your shoes I'd contact MSI and see if there's a firmware update for the drive to correct the issue. >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • DVD Movies will not play in SuperDrive after upgrading to Lion?

I just discovered that I cannot play any DVD movies using the Super Drive.  It spins up and down a couple of time and then ejects the DVD.  I tried several DVD's I have.

Well, that about does it. I inserted a music CD into my MBP, finished listening to it and now the CD is stuck in my machine. I can hear and feel it try to eject but something is stopping it so it ***** it back in. I cant figure out how to get it out. I have had nothing but trouble wit this machine. I am beginning to think I made a very expensive mistake buying this thing. I'm from Louisiana, perhaps this Mac has a better capacity to soak up oil in the Gulf than to actually WORK as a computer.
All this has happened in about 6 hours. Buyers remorse has fully set in.
