Satellite L300 29R - Monitor flickers on and off at start up - Vista

Hi from Bxl,
after turning the computer on, when the desktop icons are already visible and the background photo as well, the monitor blinks on and off in black for about 1 second each time.
Then it stabilizes and things 'seem' to work normal.
But then again, I am no expert. Perhaps there are other problems.
I recently bought a new camera and it seems to me that the problem started after downloading the software.
In the meantime I deleted it again but this flickering at start up remains.
What should I do? Please if any solutions, explain to me as to a 'total beginner'.
Thanks so much for your help in advance!
Iris

It is not easy to say why this happen.
For me it looks like some component will be loaded in the background and it has something to do with graphic.
We can obviously just speculate why this happen but at the end you must check preinstalled stuff and running background processes to see what the problem can be. What you can try is to install latest display driver offered on Toshiba support page.
At least, if everything works well leave it.

  • 24" imac with second display that flickers on and off randomly

Hi, I'm a n00b here, I've read a handful of threads before posting this a I cant seem to find a definitive answer.
I have a 24" 2.4Ghz aluminium iMac and I've recently purchased a HP zr24w 24" IPS panel as a second display, connected with an apple miniDVI - DVI connector.
The screen flickers off, to totaly black every time the mac seems to be having a hard time doing something, be it fast scrolling, flash video, but someimes randomly.
I have boot camp installed with winblows vista (for work) the screen does EXACTLY the same thing, all be it less frequently. This for me rules out the Mac OS, i think it must be something video card/driver related.
Was there ever a fix for this? most of the threads seem to just die with no official answer, it would appear that MBP users were ok until the last 10.6.3 update, when the problem seems to have returned, although i think thats a different issue with the same net effect.
I have spoken to apple care and the very helpful girl I spoke to send me some logging software which I've run and sent the logs back, that may help them out someway.
Any help would be GREAT !!
    many thanks
    Michael

well, some time has passed, here's where I'm at so far.
I tried a friend's samsung 24" screen and all was good with the world, no flickering on and off, no black outs nothing, for days it was all fine. I swapped the HP monitor back on and it went right back to its old ways. I called HP tech support, they decided that the monitor was faulty, i returned it to where I got it from and they have sent me a new one. Which was fine, for about 7 hours!!
So, to recap, the mini-DVI to DVI adapter is fine as it worked on the samsung screen, the HP screen is brand new and exhibiting the exact same issue as the first one (cant be 2 faulty ones surely) The samsung screen was fine.
This leads me to think that there is some compatibility issue between the 24" imac and this particular (hp zr24w) monitor.
I have followed apple support's requests for data logging but they cant find anything wrong there.
I'm out of ideas, any help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!
    thanks

  • Video connector keeps disconnecting (Screen flickers on and off)

    Hi,
I bought a HP Pavilion Notebook 14-v054ca two weeks ago. Last week, the screen was flickering on and off, so I took it to the shop. They said the video connector was knocked loose and asked me if I dropped the laptop. The laptop is on my desk 24/7 and I have not dropped it once (I only had it for a week)! I have a warranty, so they replaced my laptop for me. Sadly, all my data was wiped, but hey, things happen.
    I digress.
Here I am with my second brand new HP Pavilion Notebook 14. I want to make sure the screen incident doesn't happen again, so I open and close the lid as gently as I can. Guess what. One week later, the video connector disconnected yet again. Is the 14-v054ca just a line of faulty, defective laptops? I hope that is not that case, because I love HP to death. I have an HP desktop and I am extremely satisfied with it. I don't want to trade this laptop in again just to have it happen a third time. It's an utter waste of time, and I lose my data every single time they give me a new one.

    Hello, @PongV2
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you've bought two notebooks and both have had an issue with flicker screen. That this was identified from where you purchased it as a loose connector.
To get assistance on this and to see what could be done for you on the issue, I recommend contacting phone support.

  • Picture flickering on and off

Whenever I watch an on demand show with my bt vision box the picture on my screen flickers on and off continously every 15 secs or so. I get frustrated so have ended up not using it for a while which defeats the point of me paying for it. Its also started to do it on regular shows, ive rebooted and checked leads and nothing has changed. Anyone have any suggestions or had this problem?

    Hi sueandstef,
Thanks for posting. Sorry to hear you’re having problems. How are you connected? Is it via powerline adaptors? If so can you try connecting directly with cable? Take a look here for help with On Demand picture quality issues.

  • Screen flickers on and off

    Please help!
My iBook screen flickers on and off every couple of minutes - it looks like it's just shutting off. Once it flickered off, flicked back on and the whole screen was red for a sec, and then switched back on normally.
Does this mean I'm going to need a new computer?

    Maybe.
There is some kind of inverter board and video circuit which
may be going bad; and maybe the cost of this (or whatever
is wrong with it) could be a fair start toward the cost of a
new or newer computer. There should be an Apple Hardware
Test on a bootable disc, included with the computer.
You know, you get a fairly recent OS X version with the
purchase of an Apple Certified refurbished machine from
the Apple Store online; and it qualifies for the extended
AppleCare optional coverage, past the one year service
and 90 days support (enrolled, it adds total of three years.)
How old is your iBook computer and could it have any
AppleCare plan coverage left? There is a serial number
check box in part of the Apple Support section online.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Satellite L300 - Screen wont wake up and flickers

L300 screen went to sleep one day and wont wake up. Shut the lid then pop it open again it flicks the light on for about half a second then flicks off again.
I now have a secondary monitor hooked up and programmed to use that as primary. Everything else seems fine. Except the laptop screen wont stay lit. If I say turn off laptop screen, then say use it, it flicks on for half a second then off again.
So the light does work it just wont stay on.
When I first tried pulling out batteries and unplugging everything, I got it back. For about 15 minutes, then it started to flicker , then I lost it. Back to popping the lid for quick peeps then using guesswork and keying to navigate.
Now, it just pops on a light then is gone on startup.
    a) Why did it start to flicker before it faded?
    b) Why does it turn off as soon as it opens now when it obviously can work
    c) I bought another flv card in case it wasnt getting power up there (didnt work)
This started happening just after I bought and installed a Utilities program, which I found was nibbling nay chomping vigorously at registry entries. So I dont know if this is software or hardware, or a file that isnt telling it not to turn off thats been corrupted.
    Any ideas?

    Hello
    > I now have a secondary monitor hooked up and programmed to use that as primary. Everything else seems fine
This would mean the graphic card is ok and the problem is just the internal monitor.
In your case I would contact an authorized service provider because the guys can make an exact diagnostic and replace faulty hardware parts. You can find a list of them there:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Find an authorized service provider
Dont understand me wrong but here its just an user to user forum and on this virtual way its not possible to fix any hardware problems or replace it. You need professional help.

  • Satellite L300 - external monitor is pink

I have a Satellite L300 and about two weeks ago I updated the mobile intel(r) 4 series driver.
Since then whenever I set up my external monitor it is pink.
I have used two different vga cables and two diferent monitors but still get the same result?

    Hi
How about the usage of the graphic card driver from the Toshiba European driver page?
Please check the Toshiba certified GPU driver.
Do you have some problems with the internal notebook screen?
I think, if the internal screen is OK, then the graphic card chip should be ok too.
Maybe there its a VGA port issue but to be honest, this is really difficult to say

  • Satellite L300 does not have sound and modem is also not working

I have this Toshiba Satellite L300 (PSLB8A--1F004) an Australian model which was working perfectly well until I changed the harddrive after it developed bad sectors.
I have installed Win Vista Business.
I have all the drivers (TOSAPINS folder) that came with the original harddrive but when I did installed the drivers by following the correct order. i.e chipset, display, common modules, audio, modem and all other drivers.
There is still a little red x on the taskbar saying " No audio output device is installed" and also I noticed that the modem is not listed under device manager. I have also tried replacing a working modem card from a same model laptop but it is still not showing any signs of picking up the modem as well as sound driver.
I made attemp to download drivers from mytoshiba.com.au under the exact model and OS and installed but to no avail the problem is still there.
No sign of modem picked up and the little red x on taskbar still says " No audio output device is installed" and on device manager its not showing the audio or modem. there is also nothing in yellow exlamation marks and also I've tried to view hidden devices but still there is no sign.
Is there any thing else that I've missed out that I can try again?
    WewakMaster

No I dont have the vista service pack and the internet speed at my end is too slow to download it.
So I have tried installing windows 7 but the problem still remains.
I have now removed win7 and have installed WIndows XP SP3 but there is still no sign of audio so Im stuck with win XP SP3 and trying to find solutions now.
I think the problem may have been caused when I upgrade the bios...and Im still looking for ways to downgrade the bios to its original bios to confirm this.

  • Monitor cycles on and off many times before settling and staying on

When I turn my mac mini on or revive it from sleep, the monitor wakes up for a short time, then goes black for 30 seconds then revives itself for about 23 seconds in a cycle (on, off, on, off) that lasts about 30 minutes, maybe longer.  After which, the monitor stays on indefinitely.
...until the computer goes back to sleep or is turned off...  then the whole cycle starts over.
I do not have to touch anything for the cycles to happen.
The computer is running fine, in fact I can continue to type... I just cant see what I am doing.
This problem is a recent development and was not triggered by anything I am aware of.
After 6-8 times of going through this, I have not yet noticed any change in duration of cycles or of the length of time before it settles out.
    I have a Mac Mini (Mid 2011)
External DELL monitor connected via Thunderbolt port mini display port to VGA.
I have tried reseting the SMC and PRAM with no correction to the problem.

    Hello slodave,
Since you are not hearing the hard drives or anything kick on for a while it sounds like the issue may be with your power supply.
You may want to look at the power supply there should be a light on it. See if it shows it is starting properly before the computer actually turns on (so this is during the 6+ times it is turning on and off).
If the power supply is going then you may just need to replace it to continue normal operation.

  • Irritating problem with Retina Display; dims/ flickers on and off and in weird pattern along bottom of screen

I bought a 13-inch Retina MBP in late September 2014, just a few months ago and i am starting to have problems with the screen.
First of all, the screen will sometimes fade and a weird pattern will appear at the bottom of the screen in which every second set of backlights is off and the other is on.  Here is a picture that i found on the internet; from a much older mac though but still shows the problem.
The second problem, which is more irritating, is that every now and again the screen will sort of flicker where it will get darker then lighter and keep switching the brightness in a matter of seconds.  This is so hard to look at!!
Hopefully there is an easy solution however i may have to take it to an Apple store and unfortunately get it replaced.
    Thanks.

    Howdy there chappo_10,
It sounds like you have a couple of unexpected video issues on your 13 inch MacBook Pro. I'd like to recommend these troubleshooting steps specifically to hep you determine if you need to take it to the Apple Store:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • My webcam won't stay on in skype - it flickers on and off and says it's not connected

can't use my webcam for skype - it won't stay on. It goes on and off and says it's not connected. If I go to the webcam it is working. how do I resolve this?

You say "If I go to the webcam it is working." Does that mean you don't have this issue in other programs? Also is it a USB webcam or is it attached to the laptop?

  • Satellite L300 - Disk read error so I can't start Vista

    Please can you help?
Have a Toshiba Satellite L300. All i am getting is Disk Read Error occured, please press Ctrl Alt + Delete.
How can I get it to boot up again. I havent a clue what to do next just keep pressing Ctrl Alt + Delete and it says a Disk read error occurred.
I'm going round in circles in. Running Windows Vista Premium.

    Hi!
Can you access the advanced boot menu if you press F8 after you have started the notebook? Then you could start the Toshiba HDD recovery option (select repair my computer).
If you cant access the advanced boot menu you have to reinstall Windows Vista. Therefore you can use the Toshiba recovery disk if you boot from it.
    Bye

  • New LCD Monitor Blinks On and Off

I just purchased a new 22" Visionmaster LCD monitor, connected via digital cable to my ATI Radeon 128Mb video card.
However, it tends to switch OFF to a black screen, and after about 5 seconds it comes back on. The screen displays the word DIGITAL in the upper right hand corner.
Why is this happening, and what can I do to avoid it?
It doesn't seem to like using the digital cable. It works fine using the standard VGA cable, however.
Can anyone comment on this? Is this particular card not compatible?
    Thanks!

Hello! Look in your system prefs under the screen saver and see if a "hot corner" is set. It sounds like the mouse is trying to trigger a screen saver or the "display slep" is set to only a few seconds. I've seen this type of behavior with my Dell screen and it's something I'm triggering with the mouse. Tom

  • External monitor flashes on and off randomly after wake from sleep

I have a Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz hooked up to a Samsung SyncMaster 2033 External monitor via the MiniDisplayPort-DVI connector.
After waking from sleep, the external monitor will go blank for a fraction of a second at random intervals (display on the MBP remains normal). The flickering clusters are about minutes apart, while flickers within a cluster (usually 2-3 flickers per cluster) is of order seconds apart. "Detect displays" will not make this go away. The only way I can make it go back to normal is to unplug-and re-plug the MiniDisplayPort connector on the MBP.
Anyone else got a more elegant solution to this that does not involved wearing down the displayport?

I tried this.  No change.  However, I did start playing with the Display settings.  Oddly enough, when I change the disfunctioning monitor to 720p it starts working again.  Does this mean anything to anyone?
