Satellite L300 keeps freezing

My laptop keeps freezing ... it doesn't always happen, but it's started happening regularly over the past few weeks, where all programs stop responding and I can't open Task Manager, so the only thing to do is to turn the power off.
I tried restarting in Safe mode, and did a System restore, which seemed to work temporarily, but it started happening again, and even doing another restore hasn't fixed the problem. My laptop is only 8 months old and has up-to-date Norton antivirus running; I've done comprehensive virus scans but haven't picked up anything. The freezes don't seem to be brought on by any particular software - they just happen randomly, sometimes after an hour or two, sometimes not at all, and sometimes quite soon after I start the computer.
I've also run the Toshiba Assist PC Diagnostic tool which came with the computer, and that didn't pick up any problems with the hardware. It seems likely to be a software rather than a hardware problem, but I can't think of anything I've installed recently that would cause any issues, and also the fact that no program in particular brings on the freezes makes it hard to determine what the problem is.
Other than the Diagnostic tool, the system restore and running Norton, I don't know what to do!
My system is a toshiba satellite L300, running Vista Home Premium SP1, core 2 duo 2.00GHz processor, with 2GB RAM.
Any suggestions??
Thanks!

Hi
First of all I recommend removing the Norton Antivirus because this tool needs a lot of hardware resources and slow downs the system.
Instead of Norton you could use the Avira Antivir.
This software is free and can be downloaded from different pages. I use this too and Im really satisfied.
Furthermore you should check if such freezing are not related to the high temperature.
You could clean the ventilators using compressed air spray. It will help you to remove the dust from the cooling fans and grilles.
Check it!

  • Cannot load Windows 7 - Satellite C660 keeps freezing

    Hi Everyone.
This is a biggy. I have a Toshiba AMD Vision Satellite C660 / C660D laptop with no Windows installation disc. Last week it became very sluggish, then the interface resembled that of the safe mode interface and it finally became completely unresponsive, therefore, via F8 on start- up I selected the option which allowed for it to revert to factory settings (I no longer have this option)
The DOS screen appeared and started loading as normal then that become unresponsive so I restarted only to see Windows start up for the first time and carry on loading, prior to this I had to create a boot cd from my other laptop to reboot the system as I had lost the boot mngr.
The last part of the installation process began whereby a white Toshiba screen is displayed with a green progress bar that loads certain drivers (see attachment). There are 39 steps to this process and I seem to remember from before that the computer should keep restarting itself, but it keeps freezing after about two steps. I kept switching it off and eventually the system administrator locked my accounts.
Once again I restarted the PC but this time in safe mode The operating system did indeed load in safe mode and I created some new accounts with administrator privileges, however, I am still unable to load the whole operating system as it keeps freezing during the last part of the process.
I have very limited knowledge of loading operating systems so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
First of all it was a big mistake NOT to create an Toshiba recovery disk.
The HDD recovery which you were able to start by pressing F8, is only possible if the HDD is not faulty.
I think in your case I think there is something wrong with the HDD because there was an boot mgr notification which means that notebook cannot find an boot manager in order to boot up the system.
I have no other idea as to try to reinstall the system using the Toshiba recover disk or another Windows 7 disk (of course if you own one)
If the recovery would fail, you have to investigate what hardware part might be affected. I think in such case its needed to start with HDD check.
Possibly the HDD needs to be replaced. Of course it possible that Im wrong an other part is affected but at first stage you need to check new OS installation.
A recovery disk can be ordered here:

  • Satellite P10 keeps freezing up

Hi I need some help, my Satellite P10 series keeps constantly crashing over recent weeks. I have run a defrag, and error checked the laptop. I've also deleted a lot of files to free up space, and im not sure what to do.
The majority of the times it crashes, it just freezes up, sometimes i leave it a moment-in case its just a 'normal' moment that the laptops having, but it is just frozen! I have to shut it down, and obviously i keep losing data due to this!
    Can someone help me out?
    Side6

    Hello Side
It will be interesting to know if you have noticed after which handling notebook freezes. In which moment the unit freezes?
It can be caused by connecting some external device (like in my case) or maybe starting some application while in background the CPU is on the limit. Is any antivir application installed and active?
Try to end some useless processes in device manager and observe what happen.

  • My Satellite A300 keeps freezing every 5-10 mintues

    Hey guys,
I bought a Satellite A300 a little less than two years ago, and two days ago it started freezing every 5-10 minutes.  When it freezes, ctrl+alt+del does not do anything.  I have to shut down the computer by holding down the power button.  I managed to run a scan with AVG and there are no viruses on my computer.  Occasionally when I boot up my computer a Disk Check runs.  I'm not sure what to do, any help would be appriciated!
    Thanks!

Hangs do not point to hardware.
    1. Try to identify a situation or pattern that exists at the time.
    2. If you only need to wait five minutes, we could try some experiments. What happens, for instance, when you boot into Safe Mode (the first option on the menu)?

  • Satellite L300-29W - Freezed and crashing

I received this laptop as a present for christmas, so the thing is less than three months old. It has been working fine and dandy up until yesterday. I went downstairs for a few hours and my laptop is set to sleep after two but when I came up it had frozen completely. Ctrl alt del wasn't working so I had to shut it down by holding the main button. I turned it back on and everything seemed to be working ok until I started watching a video online. I hadn't touched it in about fifteen minuted and the browser crashed, followed by the computer, again with ctrl alt del not working. I turned it off completely and left it overnight.
I came back on it today and a friend reccomended I take the battery out to see if it was a problem with that. After not touching it for fifteen minutes or so it again crashed (so apparently my battery is fine). I have the free version of Avast anti virus and it kicked off two days ago saying it had caught a virus, I scanned my computer and deleted it with avast and re-scanned. The re-scan said the computer was clean so I don't know if the virus is still in there hiding or something. It's not overheating (was at a perfectly normal temperature last time it happened) and I have no idea what to do next.
I really don't know anything about computers past turning the buggers on, so any help would be appreciated but its going to have to be in english or I will be completely lost :) thanks

    Hello Sarah
At first I must give you one big compliment. Your problem description is really good and understandable. Many people here should read your posting to see how it should be done correctly.
    Back to your problem:
I had similar problem after waking up from stand-by mode and was not able to find out what was wrong there. Your notebook configuration is not known to me and I don't know which applications you use on your notebook but it can happen that some background running application/process make problems when your notebook goes to sleep mode. On my notebook I had always error message shown every time after stand-by mode.
It will be interesting to know if the same problem occurs with hibernation mode (FN+F4).
Can you please test it and post the result?

  • Satellite L300 - Very slow start up and freezes

    Hi all,
I have a Satellite L300 which has treated me well - however over the past 2 months it has got really slow and freezes quite often. I have run through anti virus, spybot etc and come up with nothing.
Last night I tried to reformat the system by pressing and holding 0 which did not work then tried with F8 which let me do a further scan but no reformat. I am now quite pleased that I failed to do the reformat as I purchased windows 7 after the original purchase of the laptop.
Any ideas anyone - or anyone with the same/simular problems?

    Hey,
That means you have Windows 7 installed at the moment and not preinstalled Windows version?!
Well, in this case the HDD recovery option is not available anymore. You can do this on preinstalled Windows only.
To format your notebook you need Toshiba recovery disk.
    Did you create it?

  • Satellite L300 PSL8B8E - Wifi Realtek RTL8187B freezes

    Hi,
I have problem with Wifi adapter in my new laptop Toshiba Satellite L300 PSL8B8E.
I purchased it 3 days ago. I have build in WiFi adapter Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0.
    1. I tried to reinstall Windows Vista Home Premium from scratch.
    2. I have downloaded drivers from Toshiba download site.
    3. I disabled Power saving options.
    4. Bios is the latest version
    5. I changed Wifi channels
None of this helped me to solve problem with freezing Wifi. After restart it's working for a while and then it stop communicate and nothing helps me until I restart operating system.
    Can anybody help me?
    Zoltan

    Hi all,
I have used Toshiba laptops before, but this Satellite L300 PSL8B8E (Vista 32, with Realtek RTL8187B wireless card) is the worst I have ever had.
Do not get me wrong, the machine works just fine, without wireless connection. But in this era, a laptop without wless is not worth much! Frankly, I have not had a chance to enjoy the wireless/mobility of a supposedly great toshiba, since I received it last March.
Wireless connection starts when the laptop starts, and after few minutes it simply dies. I have 3 other laptops and PCs home, all using the same wireless router (maxrange from Netgear) problem - free. Only this Satellite L300 is making my experience a nighmare.
I have tried resolving this, using every piece of advice I have been able to get, from updating Bios, firmware, drivers, OS, what have you.
My problem is I live in Palestine, a territory without Toshiba presence, and I have no way of returning this laptop to the vendor (was purchase from London).
Is there anyway to get in touch with TOshiba reps/tech geeks directly. They seem not to care to respond to similar questions, though clearly this seems to be a widespread problem (see the number of searrches and results using Google).
    Please help.

  • Satellite C660 11K - Keeps freezing and unable to access Windows

Recently bought Satellite C660 11K and loaded a game on to it, within a couple of hours it froze (ctrl alt delete wouldn't work) I shut it down and started it back up and got a message saying some software or hardware was stopping Windows from working.
I restored it to factory settings with the recovery disk. However I have not loaded any games or other software since, but it keeps freezing and I've had to use the recovery disk 3 times!
I don't know what else to try!

Once I've used the recovery disk it's fine for a couple of days. I've been using the internet when it freezes and won't respond to anything. When I turn it back on the error message I get is ' Windows failed to start, a recent hardware or software change might be the cause' it then gives the option of using recovery mode. I triedthe recovery mode before and left the laptop for over 12 hours and nothing happened. After that I've used the recovery disk, but the problem keeps happening

  • Satellite L300 - Charger causes freezing

I have Satellite L300 with Windows 7 64bit running. Computer works great without charger. Charger charges battery ok with system shut down. Charger charges battery ok when running in safe mode.
OS reinstalled and drivers updated that can be when laptop is running on battery.
If startup with charger plugged in will boot all the way up to end of welcome screen then freezes. What exactly changes at this point? Running on battery is fine untill charger is plugged in then freezes immediately. Laptop cannot or willnot run without battery on charger--freezes at welcome. Battery charger not problem as identical results with new identical charger.
Toshiba Techn suggested reinstall OS and drivers -DONE- no difference nothing that some changes may not be done in safe mode or without charger attatched. In reading forums searching for solutions I note that many suffer this problem with no definitive solution coming to hand. Toshiba seem extremely shy to attack this problem in general and my experience with them on phone seemed to have my mate ducking and diving.
To me the issue seems to be in the power distribution (hardware or software) but I have reached a stage someone with superior knowledge has to take my hand to guide me. Can anyone assist.

    Hi buddy,
I assume you are using an original Toshiba AC/DC adapter, right? Or do you use a 3rd party charger?
I think only Toshiba knows what at this point where notebook freezes will be accessed...
Have you reinstalled Windows from Toshiba recovery disk or is it your own Windows 7 installation?
If yes I would try installing Windows from Toshiba recovery disk to make sure the problem is not software or driver related. Toshiba recovery disk contains an image of factory settings with all drivers and tools.
This means if the same error occurs after recovery installation its a hardware malfunction :(

    Hi
If you use SATA drivers then the SATA mode option in BIOS should be set to AHCI.
If you dont use SATA drivers then you have to set to compatible mode.

  • Satellite L300-147- Manual volume control not working

The manual volume control on the laptop is no longer working. If I try to adjust the volume (on the right the headphone plug-ins)- I just keep scrolling. As a result, I can only watch DVD on a really low volume level. I have adjusted volume control under "control panel" to the maximum level.
Any ideas to fix this please?

    Hello
    > The scroll for volume control on the laptop keeps scrolling on empty (it can't reach the end)
Believe me buddy, this is absolutely normal.
I have Satellite L300 too and I can still scroll the volume control although the sound is on lowest level (I can see this in Windows sound properties).
To be honest I didnt have any notebook as yet where the volume control ends on a certain point.

  • Satellite L300 - System crashes often

    Hello!
Recently bought Toshiba Satellite L300-1AM (PSLBGE), now I'm facing the system crashing problem.
Laptop came without operating system. First thing, I installed Windows XP, updated BIOS version from v1.3 to v1.6 then have to reinstall XP. After that, I installed most recent drivers from Intel and Toshiba support pages for this model, and automatic updates from Microsoft, including Service Pack 3.
(Chipset, video and Intel matrix storage drivers are from Intel support. Others are from Toshiba.)
Everything seems to work, without any unknown device or recognised error, but very often programs get stuck or whole system freeze. Especially when trying to read something larger from disk, or doing demanding task.
I will appreciate any experience or suggestion.
(Apologizing for bad english, hope it can be understood!)

    Hello
Its not easy to say what causes the problem. Normally I would say reinstall the notebook with the Toshiba recovery disk but you dont have one. Maybe you should contact an authorized service provider to order one or from Toshiba directly:
    https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
It could be a software or hardware problem so in your case I would try it with the recovery disk.
Furthermore you could check the RAM and HDD. Maybe one part is faulty. Check this with Memtest86 [www.memtest86.com] and Drive Fitness Test http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT

I can't seem t find your model in the Toshiba US support site.
However, usually, you tap the F8 key while powering up and it brings you into the Start Up recovery menu.

  • Satellite A100-002 - Freezes during Windows 7 installation

    Hi
I have 1. Satellite A100-002 and 2. big problem with installation of Windows 7.
2 yeras ago i tried to install Wista - but it froze during installation every time i tried. of course I tried different versions of Wista.
once i was successful with installation - but it keep freezing al the time - immediately after start.
so i gave up - and went back to XP
now I try to install Windows 7 - and again the same problems :(
can anybody tell me whats wrong??? - a really need it.
    thanx a lot

    it froze any time :(
during the instalation. after coping files, extracting, and during finishing of instalation it froze.
then after 10 restarts of notebook i finaly see the desktop of W7 - but only for 30 second - then it froze.
from that time it forze always after rebooting the NB ussualy whe it showed "starting windows"
sometimes starting of system gets further and it shows error mesage that teh instalation didnt finished correctly and that system need to reboote computer. then system reboot NB and then its it froze during "starting widows"
now i get another version of W7.
it looked good because i succefully finshed instalation - not whole because the system needed to restart NB to totaly finish instalation. so it rebooted NB and then during finishing of instalation it froze:(
from that time it impossible to start W7.
I instal W7 on HDD with formating of primar partition - to remove everything of previous system.
or what do you mean by "using SATA drivers or install it in Compatibility mode?"

  • Satellite L300 - Upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Home Premium issues

    Hi all,
I just recently got a Satellite L300 with an OEM version of Vista Home Basic.
I have a copy of Windows Vista: Home Premium (upgrade) disc and decided to use it on the laptop.
I put the disc in, and followed the steps however the upgrade option is blanked out... This is if I use the product key provided with the disc or not.
The laptop came with Service Pack 1 already installed and the disc I own was released into the shops before Service Pack 1.
My main question really is how can I get my disc to upgrade my version of Vista. I have tried searching Google, this website, Microsoft's website and I keep getting the same answer.
Basically go through options and do anytime upgrade. All of these are for me to buy from Microsoft which would be kind of pointless as I already have a copy.
I did read something at on a site that stated my disc would have to have the service pack on the disk and I seen a website with some kind of disc editing program for Vista but im not too keen on using it and the 'how to' wasn't very easy to understand.
Also, im not too keen on calling either Toshiba or Microsoft on premium rate numbers for help with something I have already bought and paid for and should be as simple as a few steps.
Anyway hope someone can help because I would really like to upgrade.

    Hello
I understand you and it is really annoying but what to do now? the fact is that Toshiba has offered this notebook with certain Vista version. This version must be offered with best and latest available Microsoft security updates. Due to this Toshiba offers it with latest SP1 option.
So now you try to install update offered long time ago and probably offered before SP1 was on the market. I understand your point of view but, in my opinion, it has nothing to do with Toshiba now, and you should try to find solution with Microsoft. For example you can also pick up info from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930733
Clean Vista Home Premium can be installed without any problems. All drivers, tools and utilities can be downloaded from Toshiba support & download page.
