Satellite L300D PSLC0E: IE & Firefox hangs & short battery time

Folks, I recently bought 2 new L300D laptops (Vista Premium, 2MB RAM) for my children. Im reasonably technical but would appreciate some advise on following issues:
1. Both explorer and firefox browsers regularly 'hang' when using gmail. When I try to close the browser the 'x' to close in the top right starts shimmering and wont stop. Browser hangs. This can sometimes happen when opening new emails. Not sure this has happened with basic browsing. Is this VISTA, BIOS, browser, google?!
Big issue as they cant check their email regularly. Only way to exit is through task manager.
2. Battery life now seems to be 1 hour. I was careful to charge up and drain down when I bought but battery life is v poor.
3. Toshiba TEMPRO advises on various updates. I checked the BIOS and after issues with extracting I seem to be upto date. Which ones do you suggest I pay attention to as most seem cosmetic?
Many thanks in advance.
Stewart

Possibly this has something to do with the security settings of your internet browsers.
Maybe you should check it again.., furthermore I recommend updating the Win Vista, IE and firefox to the latest state?

Battery life time depends on the notebook usage... this means that if you are using some applications which need more hardware resources then the battery would discharge faster.
You could extend the battery working time changing some settings in the Vista power settings. For example reduce the screen brightness, set the CPU frequency to a lower level, etc..

I agree with Raver, if you have no big issues with the notebook then a BIOS updates is not really necessary but if you want you can update it.

  • Firefox hangs nearly every time I am working in Blackboard.

I teach on line using Blackboard. Since installing Wndows 7 Firefox hangs nearly every time I am working in Blackboard...and this is every day. Firefox doesn't hang on my home desktop using Vista 64. I have all the latest Java updates and have continually queried Blackboard for a solution with no result.

Could you describe the new window in more detail? For example, is it an ad for something, or a login page, etc.
Since this occurs so regularly, I think it would make sense to try browsing for an hour in Firefox's Safe Mode to see whether that makes any difference. This will temporarily disable your extensions, which are the type of add-on most likely to cause mischief.
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled ''(Flash and other plugins still work)''
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?

  • Satellite L300D PSLC0E - Cannot connect to TV

I have a problem with either my laptop or TV. I have a Toshiba Satellite L300D model number - pslc0e-017017en.
I'm trying to use a VGA wire to a Samsung TV but its not working.
I've try FN+F5 and nothing appears. Is this a common problem, do I need 2 install something?
    Please help.

    Hi
The question is what cable did you use and how did you connect it to the TV and if you have chosen the right channel on the TV!
As far as I know this notebook supports ONLY VGA (RGB) port. Using this port you can transmit only the analog video signal.
For example; you cannot connect VGA to DVI. This will not function!
If you want to connect the external monitor you will you have to use the VGA cable and should connect the both devices using a VGA cable.
By the way; its very important that you would use the Toshiba certified graphic driver!!!

  • Too short battery time

    Hi!
First of all, sorry for my bad english!
So, I have a Dell Inspiron laptop (Intel [non sandy] i5, Ati graphics). I used Ubuntu on it with Fluxbox. With it, the battery was discharged after 3 hours. Last week I installed Arch on it with Fluxbox, and the battery is discharged after 1,5 hours.
I've read many pages about it, but I don't know what to do. Can someone tell me, what programs should I install? Laptop Mode Tools, upower, acpi, acpid, pm-utils? Can someone tell me step-by-step what to do? I know the wiki pages, but they're too complicate for me, I'm newbie

Thank You, this application is very useful!
Here are some screenshots about it: https://www.dropbox.com/gallery/1125359 … p?h=b54f44
    I have some question.
My battery time is not bad if I use only console, and do nothing. But if I use X, and listen to music, my battery time goes down with 40-50 mins. Can I do something against this?
I see in powertop that mocp uses "Audio codec hw:C0D0: IDT" on 100%. Can I reduce this usage?
And another question. I have acpid installed, and running. I would like to ask it to run my powersave script if I plug out the adapter, and run another if I plug it in. I read that I have to make a script to /etc/acpi/events/ that ask my acpid. But I don't know how
My acpi_listen said the following happens if I plug out the adapter:
    ac_adapter ACPI0003:00 00000080 00000000
    battery PNP0C0A:00 00000080 00000001
And the following if I plug it in again:
    battery PNP0C0A:00 00000080 00000001
    ac_adapter ACPI0003:00 00000080 00000001
    battery PNP0C0A:00 00000080 00000001
Can somebody tell me what should I insert to my event script?

  • Firefox hangs shortly after starting

Recently updated to FF19 for Windows. Today FF started hanging within 10 seconds of starting. The menus worked, but that was about all. I could click the Window close control, but when the confirm close dialog would appear (if I managed to open a tab or two before FF hung) the dialog box would be blank. FF is the only app exhibiting this problem. It works fine in safe mode. I disabled all add-ons and plug-ins. Same problem. I uninstalled FF19 and then installed FF18.0.2. Same problem and symptoms. I created a new profile. Same problem and symptoms. I reset FF. Same problem and symptoms.
What other diagnostic or troubleshooting steps should I be taking.
    Machine is an HP Envy 15, i7, 12GB, Win7 Pro SP1 64bit (OEM).

I restarted Windows in safe mode but no result. I have found what is causing the freezing though, it was the Lastpass add-on which was attempting to connect to the lastpass website every time FF starts. Here is the solution of the problem:
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/3c18fc271388433
But then, when I was uploading the image FF froze again, this time FF causing the video driver to fail (I have to say, that I enabled hardware acceleration again, after fixing the lastpass freeze):
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/9e5f52271389190
I forgot to mention - I use NVIDIA GTX560Ti, Intel Core i5 2500K, 16GB RAM and OCZ Vertex4 SSD with Windows 8 Pro x64 with all the latest drivers and firmwares installed.

  • No XP drivers for Satellite L300D PSLC0E

    Hi
There is not XP drivers for my notebook model in Toshiba Web. Why?
I can only find drivers for Vista or Independent OS (?)
    Thanks

    Hi again
    I need XP drivers for:
    - Audio device on high Definition Audio Bus
    - Controladora de Bus SM
    - Controladora de Video
    - Conroladora Ethernet
    - Modem device on High Definition Audio Bus
    - RTL8187B_WLAN_Adapter
I have been looking for these drivers for a whole week and is imposible to find them.
The only driver i got was the CATALYST ATI for the Video controller.
I have tried diferents drivers from Realtek Web with no results.
I dont understand why i can find in Toshiba Web the XP drivers for all the notebooks models but not for my model.
Is easier for Toshiba to get them and i think toshiba should put them in the support web.
Please, support me. I bought a toshiba because the support of a big company. I could buy a cheaper computer but i knew that the support is usually bad, but now i am not sure about that.

I get a white screen with the Windows circle that indicates Firefox is busy. On the bottome left, it says "waiting for XXX," where XXX is a hostname, usually some kind of ads server. Then it says Firefox stopped responding.

First, try to reset Firefox. [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]. This simple step will eliminate many Firefox problems with only one click.
After this, Update to Firefox 14. [[Update Firefox to the latest version]]
A few other basic trouble shooting things you can try is this:
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Update all your plugins (Flash, Java, etc.): [http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/ http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/].
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. [http://www.malwarebytes.org/ http://www.malwarebytes.org/]. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. You can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.

When I used windows on this samsung, for about 3-4 hours, the battery gauge was a quater (or sometime half) out of full.
When I used linux on this samsung, for about 3-4 hours, it flatted out (0%).

Otherwise, if you can figure out if there is a way to simply turn off the nvidia card when you use Linux (if you don't want to utilize it in Linux that is), then that is an option as well.  I have an Intel based Thinkpad with only the HD4000 integrated processor, and the battery life I get on this machine actually exceeds what I have been told I should expect with windows.
If you take the nvidia graphics card out of the picture, you still are working with Linux, and you have an operating system that is strictly a DIY setup.  So although a vanilla kernel and the base packages provide some very sane defaults, it is certainly not a set of defaults that optimizes for power conservation.  A really good place to start is by using powertop to see what kinds of power draw you are actually getting and what kinds of things are the most power hungry in your machine.
There are many optimizations you can make within /sys and through options when kernel modules are loaded that can bring about much better battery conservation.  So on the last section of powertop (tab over a few times) you will see a bunch of things marked "good" and "bad".  You need to check all the bad things and figure out what settings and tools yuo can use to make those say "good".  As an example, the ethernet card's wake on lan functionality being on will report a "bad".  So I have a udev rule that, upon detecting the presence of the device, will run ethtool and turn off that functionality.  I also have configuration files in /etc/modprobe.d that ensure that certain modules are loaded with power saving options turned on.
There is a wiki page that outlines most of the things that can be done to optimize these things.

  • FireFox Hangs

Firefox hangs up every time I use it causing me to either force quit or reboot my PBG4. For the past 4 months, it was my default browser but I had to switch back to Safari. Are there any know fixes or workarounds for this problem?

Delete the preferences file org.mozilla.firefox.plist . It will be recreated when you restart Firefox. If that doesn't work, delete it again, drag the firefox icon to the trash, empty the trash, and download the current version from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

  • Firefox 4 .0.1 hangs all the time. Has to be Force Killed

Firefox hangs almost every time I run it on my Mac Laptop running Mac OS X 10.6.7. I have to force kill it every time. I have disabled all add-ons and also switched from 64bits to 32bits but the problem has not gone away. I am using Safari more and more and I don't want to do that.

  • Firefox hangs on particular webpages

Firefox hangs all the time on particular pages. I don't know if it has something to do with Flash player but it only seems to happen occasionally when I'm browsing the web whereas it's guaranteed to happen every time on UK newspaper websites.
It is driving me mad, I prefer Firefox to IE 10 but this one issue is likely to stop be using it.
    Any suggestions?

I also have the same problem when I go to
    www.reuters.com
When I go to that website it hangs/doesn't load the page. I download the latest version and did a clean reinstall but it still doesn't work.

  • Firefox hangs, links don't click through, delayed response on some links

Firefox hangs, links don't click through, looong delays on some links

i have been using firefox for many years but now Im getting fed up with pages hanging.. it happens when the page is flash enabled.
i tried ie and chrome and both work properly - I just dont like them.. please fix this!
running win7 on a HP 4310s laptop brand new with all updates installed... my extensions are flashgot, xmarks, image toolbar, java, office, acrobat reader.
I tried safe-mode and it still hangs!
I also noticed that when I have two tabs open or more and I try to close firefox from task manager it will un-hang but only for a while - I cancel the closing and continue using the browser as normal... if during this time I navigate away from the flash enabled page then it continues normally. If I stay on the flash enabled page or open a new one it hangs again shortly after.

  • Satellite L300D-12U - Two issues after Ubuntu Linux installation

    Hello,
I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my brand new Satellite L300D-12 U.
Up to now everything works fine but there are two things disturbing me.
    1. I have problem with Suspend to RAM. It does not work. If I use the standby option, the screen becomes black but the notebook is still running (you can hear it).
Furthermore nothing happens when I press the Power Button to exit the standby option.
I have to completely shut down the notebook and restart to be back in Ubuntu.
Maybe anybody have some ideas how can I solve the problem?
    My /etc/default/acpi-support have these entries:
    # Comment the next line to disable ACPI suspend to RAM
    ACPI_SLEEP=true
    # Comment the next line to disable suspend to disk
    ACPI_HIBERNATE=true
    # Change the following to "standby" to use ACPI S1 sleep, rather than S3.
    # This will save less power, but may work on more machines
    # ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=mem
    ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=standby
    2. Battery Life
My current maximum battery life is 1:10 hours. On windows it is > 2 hours. Maybe anybody have some configuration ideas to increase the battery time under Ubuntu?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Manuel

    Hello Manuel
I am really sceptic about Linux support here. I've heard that Toshiba will start some support with Linux but obviously it is not started yet.
If nobody here can offer some help I recommend you to discuss this on some Linux forum. You have more chance to get some help there.

  • Need to buy 19V 4.7A charger for Satellite L300D

I would love if someone could help me.
My charger for my toshiba satellite L300D broke recently I bought a 19V 4.74A charger and it blow my battery even though I was told it was only slightly more powerful and wouldn't effect the laptop!
I have looked everywhere for a 19v 4.7A charger but cant find any on the internet or anything!
Can someone please help me if I cant find one I will have to buy a new laptop.

    Hi
I guess you could find a part number at the bottom of the old AC adaptor.
The simplest procedure would be searching for this partnumber in the internet to find an online dealer.
As the last option you could order the part from Toshiba ASP in your country.
The guys can provide always the compatible notebook parts.
    Good luck
