The specs say it comes with the TOSHIBA DVD Player, so DVDs should play on it right out of the box.  Sounds like you're being taken for a ride by BestBuy.  I'd return it and get my money back or a new laptop.  And before I left the store, I'd make sure it played a DVD.

  • Upgraded to Vista Service Pack 2 on my Satellite L305-S5955...now there's no sound!

Last night I upgraded to Vista Service Pack 2 and today it says I don't have a soundcard.  Out of all of computers, this is my only Vista, so I'm having trouble fixing this problem.
I tried to upgrade the drivers from the Toshiba website, but it's not a driver issue; there is no card being recognized.
So, I used the "Add New Hardware" wizard to re-add the soundcard.  Doesn't work.
I see lots of people having trouble with this.  And also, when the sound was working, it was really quiet.  I'd have to turn off the dishwasher, heat, laundry machines, etc to hear anything!
Hope someone can help me on this.

I have had this laptop for more than 4 years now and recently I have had issues with it freezing up and not responding within approximately 5-10 min of booting up. • Windows XP drivers needed for L305-S5955

I downloaded the ones listed on the support site, but I still need sound drivers, LAN drivers (not Wi-Fi, that works fine) and some other device (listed as 'SM Bus Controller' in Device Manager).  Any help?  Thanks!

In case there are drivers you cannot locate on the US site,...
Your model is in part-number family PSLB8U, which corresponds to part-number family PSLB8E in European Toshiba machines.
Go to the European download site and look up Satellite L300 with Short Model No. PSLB8E.
(The SM Bus Controller is the chipset software.)

  • Vista will not boot/install after performing a restore to factory settings on satellite l305

I have a satellite l305 that i bought new thru walmart.com about a year & a half ago, and for the past few months it seems like there are more & more issues with this pc that are causing it not to work properly-everything from drivers failing-or even disappearing, in some cases-to  crashing into a blue screen everytime i insert a micro sd card into the slot.. My sound drivers are gone & even after i THOUGHT i downloaded them again, they still won't install or even recognize that they are there and then yesterday it suddenly stopped being able to fully load some of my fave games  that i play daily.. I have tried EVERY SINGLE SUGGESTION in EVERY  article, forum, help site, etc.,that i could find & even tried to get help over the phone from a pc tech here locally, and nothing has been able to fix my issues. I have done so many system restores from so many different restore points, installed updates, uninstalled updates, tried to install new drivers, rolled back drivers, started in safe mode to do diagnostics checks, entered BIOS & checked EVERY setting, reset all settings to default, checked error logs, etc., etc., etc...I have even completely disassembled my entire laptop & checked all wiring, fuses, etc., made sure everything was working, etc., So, finally yesterday I decided that it's gotta be something to do with a tech issue-probably with my vista home premium OS that came pre-installed at purchase, so i thought it best to just go ahead & go into the back up & restore & back up all my files onto an external hd using the file transfer wizard option inside the restore center, and then proceed into restoring the pc to it's factory, or "out of box", state. And i assumed i covered my bases by saving the back up-just in case...ohhh no-not the case at all!
It did't even occur tp me to that i might need an actual BOOT disk for vista after the fact. I just assumed that "out of box" meant just how it originally came-WITH vista pre-installed & ready to set up-like it did the day i bought it! i also was under the assumption that, isnce it never asked for a product key or anyting to activate vista then, that it wouldn't need one now either. But anyway, so this is where i'm at now-after i did the factory restore & turned it back on, it said to wait while windows finishes installing-but it never finished, then finally about an hour later, it said that windows was unexpectedly interrupted during installation & did not complete, and for me to restart pc to try install again. But after i did that, it was the same thing over & over. it NEVER installs!
So then i decided to go ahead & "restore windows using back up image" that i created on my external hd prior to  the factory restore, thinking that  it would just kinda pu **bleep** all back, but thats not working either. it recognizes the drive, and takes me to a menu where i can actually even view all the files on the drive and even tho they are known by my pc to be back up files, it still won't associate them to being back up files to MY PC!! I even got desperate enough to find a site that claimed to offer a free vista boot disk in the form of an iso image that i burned onto cd & tried to boot from as well. That actually took me to an install screen for windows & all the way to where it asks for product key-which DID NOT come locatedon any sticker anywhere on my laptop, and because they DID NOT include any OS utility, install, or boot disks with the purchase of my laptop, i don't know what the product key is OR where else i might be able to find that info, and i WILL NOT pay for ANOTHER ONE,  just because they were too lazy or cheap to send  the disks with the pc! so i tried to skip this step till later, but when i skip it, it shows anpther error saying that install was terminated & could not finish install & if i wish to continue, for me to restart my pc & re-attempt install..WHAT IS GOING NE WITH THIS AND WHAT CAN I POSSIBLY DO TO JUST BE ABLE TO USE MY LAPTOP AGAIN?? HELP ME PLEASE SOMEONE!!

    Hi,
I do not really understand... Did you made a backup before restore to factory settings? And did you copy all backup files to an external device? If not, the data is gone!
Why? Restoryng to factory does not mean a reinstallation. It means to fill the whole harddisk with an image of the first (factory) installation. All other data will be destroyd! Other partitions are deleted and normally you find only one big partition - the whole hdd.
If you have a complete backup on external drive and it is corrupted during restore, try to open the files manually. Maybe you can restore some single files.
    Good luck
    kind regards

  • Error message: "Webcam driver open fail" for Satellite L305-S5875

Problem: Webcam is not working and when Camera Assistant Software is started up, the Error message, "Webcam driver open fail" pops up.
    Computer: Notebook Satellite L305-S5875
    OS: Windows Vista
In troubleshooting, I have unsuccessfully tried the following: Changed the webcam driver several times, rolled back driver, updated driver, and tried Chicony 2.0 USB driver, and a few other webcam drivers. The webcam initially worked fine, but about a month after installing and using Skype video, the webcam suddenly stopped working and on reboot I got the error message.
I've stopped Skype and Camera Assistant Software at startup and manually start them, as someone suggested this as a solution. I've uninstalled both and reinstalled several times.  I've tried one software without the other installed... trying every possible arrangement for a solution, to no avail.
I called Customer Support and John, although very nice and patient, was not helpful.  He said he'd research and call back.  Didn't.
I've gone to Chicony website to try to find an more current driver than January 07.  When I let Windows install the latest from the web, it installs a Microsoft 2006 driver.  I don't think it's a hardware issue, as it started acting up after Skype installed.  I also tried System Restore, but that didn't work either.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    SteveCo

Thanks Jerry.  I spent hours going through the links you provided and tried some of the suggestions looking for a solution.  Nothing worked.
I tried uninstalling Toshiba's Camera Assist software and Skype (Skype initially seemed to be the instigator of the problem), completely removing both from the registry, and removing the webcam with Device Manager.  Then I made sure Vista was up to date, and then installed the latest Toshiba Camera Assist software from the Toshiba download page.  After installation and rebooting, I'm getting the same error message: "Webcam driver open fail."
The webcam used to work, before we installed Skype and used it a few times.  From the other posts I've read, it does seem to be a common problem... usually after Skype or another webcam-using software is installed and run.
We have another Toshiba laptop: A215-S4757, that has the same OS and webcam-using programs, and it does not have an issue.  Apparently though , after going through all the links on the European message board, you provided, the L305 model is having a problem.
    Open for suggestions.

  • How To use a wireless in Satellite L305-S5968

I just recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5968 and I've never used or been able to set up a wireless PC.
How exactly can I use this PC to be wireless so I can login for free at the local library.
My wireless network card is this one: Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter.
I have the LAN working just fine but I'm afraid that the library does not have LAN plugins there.
What all do I need and what do I need to do to make this work.
I need step by step instructions on this please do not post vague answers.
I'm not a PC idiot, but I have never set this up before so this is new for me.
EDIT: Sorry I realize this may help...
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on here I believe.
I have my own disk i installed it with. I'll also be installing the wireless driver becasue apparently its missing as well.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Im a little bit confused about your posting. What you want to know exactly?
I mean you can WLAN instead of LAN without problems. Its the same just without cable. You have only to check the TCP/IP settings on your computer that is also depending on the router and type in the right password from the router Thats all!
Furthermore I have founded an interesting document:

  • FN key not working in Windows XP - Satellite L305-S5885

Hello, I have recently downgraded my Toshiba Satellite L305 S5885 from Vista to WindowsXP. Everything is working fine except the function (Fn) keys for controlling screen brightness, volume. Some work like mute but most do not do anything when I try to use them. All drivers installed fine the device manager shows nothing missing or errors.
I have tried installing all the drivers for the keyboard, Fn keys, hotkeys and still I cannot get them to work at all. Has anyone been able to get these keys to work after installing WinXP or do you know what drivers/software I am missing? Can these keys be used in XP or do they only work in Vista?
    Thanks.

    Woudl advise a BIOS upgrade when downgrading to Windows XP, the European BIOS driver for your version of notebook is;

    When the BIOS has been installed, re-install the Hotkeys/Controls driver on the link below;

  • Satellite L305 won't boot until I press "Enter" repeatedly

My wife is going on a mission trip to Africa, and acquired a used Satellite L305-S5907 to donate to a needy student there. I used the original Toshiba recovery discs to reformat and reinstall Vista to original factory state, and have run all the endless Windows updates, including SP1 and 2. Everything seems to work fine except for one weird quirk. When I start or restart the computer, it powers up, but won't start to boot unless I repeatedly press Enter (or F2 or F12), and then go through the Boot screen or Setup screen. The computer was doing this before I restored it, but since it had belonged to a high school girl I hoped that a clean reinstall would fix things. The only thing that occurs to me is to update the BIOS, but drilling down through the levels of Toshiba's website, I get as far as a link to BIOS 2.20, but that page won't even load, let alone download the installer. I've searched for another way into Toshiba's download site, but can't find one, and I don't want to risk a third party BIOS fix.
She's leaving for Kenya next weekend, and wants to donate a conputer that's working smoothly, so any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

I dumped Vista operating system a long time ago and installed Win 7.  I’ve used different OS system since Win 98; I thought Vista was not prime time.  Have you tried to fix with Windows STARTUP REPAIR if you haven’t found a solution yet?

  • Toshiba Satellite L305 - can't boot from HDD

    Hi.
My laptop became useless a week ago after refusing to boot from the 640GB Samsung HDD.
For nearly 4 years I have been using it without any problem, with Toshiba, WD, Samsung disks, the later for nearly 2 years.
I was able to see the unbootable partitions after booting Linux (via external DVD), so the disk is okay.
System BIOS version is 2.20, I reinstalled Windows XP and the result was:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
After disabling the LAN from setup only tHE Windows message appered.
    Can't figure it out.
    Any help is appreciated.

I don't understand. How can you do that if the hard disk is unavailable?

  • Satellite L305-S5926 Won't Load Windows

My wife purchased her Satellite L305-S5926 in May and earlier today she closed it while not in use.  When she tried to use it later, it would obviously power up but nothing happened.  You could see that the LCD screen was powered up and the fan was running but nothing on the screen.  When I restart the computer the initial Toshiba screen loads and then the screen goes black.  From the Toshiba screen, I am able to access InsydeH20 (version 1.80) but beyond that, I can't do anything.  I've reset the default settings there and that's about all I know to do although it doesn't fix anything.  Is InsydeH20 the BIOS?  Can I do something from there to boot Windows?
Thanks in advance to any and all help

Hello Jane and welcome in Toshiba forum
After reading your posting I must say that best and easiest solution for you is to reinstall operating system using original Toshiba recovery DVD. This DVD contains operating system, all necessary drivers, Toshiba specific tools and utilities. After recovery image installation you will have out-of-box state and clean preinstalled OS.
Yes, this should fix your problem. Please note: when you do this all saved data will be deleted.
Do you have some important data saved on your notebook?
If not use this disc reinstall Vista and everything should be ok again.

  • Toshiba satellite l305 HELP!!!!

Well I've had a toshiba satellite l305 and for some reason, the USB and disc tray only work every now and then. If I try to open the disc tray it just flashes an orange light, and the USB ports 70% of the time just don't work, like they're not there. I'll plug in a USB, the actual thing will let me know it's plugged into something (for example I'll plug in my Zune and it'll light up and charge) but the laptop wont recognize that it's there. No noise, and it's wont connect....any help?
the USB one is more important to me then the disc one btw.

First off we need to know the complete model number.  There are a lot of different L305 models.
In the meantime have you checked the Download Site to see if there are any Service Bulletins for your model, updated drivers, or bios files that need to be installed?
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.
