Satellite L355 disk read error/no safe mode
I have a Satellite L355 with Windows Vista. When I start my computer, it says "Disk read error, press crtl alt delete to restart".
I do not have the recovery disk, but I did buy the Ultimate Boot CD. I have tried everything on there with no luck. It also will not let me start in safe mode. I press F8 at startup and it goes to a black screen with an underscore, and that's it.
Any ideas would be helpful, I've tried and searched everywhere. Thanks.
I don't know where do you live and it is not easy to send you some webpage if you don't understand what is written there. The fact is you need 2,5 250 GB SATA hard disc.

Can you access the advanced boot menu if you press F8 after you have started the notebook? Then you could start the Toshiba HDD recovery option (select repair my computer).
If you cant access the advanced boot menu you have to reinstall Windows Vista. Therefore you can use the Toshiba recovery disk if you boot from it.

Satellite M45 with disk read error
My Satellite M45 has hung with a "disk read error" on reboot. I have tried cntrl-alt-delete but to no avail. I am loathed to use the recovery disk since it will reformat and I have a feeling my hard disk might be fried anyway.
Has anyone any knowledge on how I can restore this disk inexpensively?

GIf you can't boot normally, hit the F8 key during boot up and see if you can get into Safe Mode. If not, running the Recovery CDs maybe the only option.
I would try to run the Recovery CDs even if I thought that the drive might be fried. What is the down side? If it works, you have a working computer. If it doesn't, you know that you were right and the hard drive needs to be replaced. -
Satellite L305D-S593 - Disk read error
My Toshiba Satellite L305D-S593 has suddenly shut off. At first I thought it had just over heated or something, but when I tried to turn back on it gave me a message saying disk read error press ctrl alt dlt to restart. I did multiple time to the same effect. So then I tried reinstalling windows I got lucky if it showed the installation screen once it did I followed the instructions for a clean install (I had to do this once before but for different reasons).
Once it brought me to menu were I select a partition to install on I told it to do it on the main HDD after that and some loading time it told it was unable to complete the formatting required. So I redid the process and I noticed the the partition said it had 288GB of memory available but before this I only had about 40. So instead I clicked the format button and it said it could not complete the action because the disk is about to fail.
P.S. My processer is a 64 bit AMD Turion dual core mobile processor, with 4GB of RAMHey,
In my opinion it has something to do with HDD itself I assume its a defective sector if Windows installation cant format the HDD properly. I mean before you tried reinstalling Windows the system could not start due to a disk read error. This would mean the files on HDD are muddled up due defective sectors
Can you install Windows from Toshiba recovery disk?
If it doesnt work too I would try to replace the HDD. Usually this is not complicated and can be done in 5 minutes.
Furthermore you can check the HDD for errors with special diagnostic tools like Drive Fitness Test. Google a little bit for such tools, they are freeware so its no problem to find them. ;) -
Satellite Pro L300 - Disk Read Error

I'm currently having problems with my Satellite Pro L300,
Everytime I try and boot it up, it will come up with a 'Disk Read Error, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to Reboot' this has been happening for a while, and i've tried using the Recovery Console with the 'FIXBOOT' command, but this isn't working, due to the fact that there is no OS installed. I've tried re-installing Windows Vista Ultimate, but it keeps giving me an error. Any help?To test the hard drive determine what brand of hard drive you have. You can check the Bios/Setup to find out or run SIW or Belarc Advisor. Go to that manufacturer's support site and download their Self Booting Diagnostic CD ISO image, create the CD using the Burn From Image option (see http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm for more information on doing this), then boot to it and run the most exhaustive tests available. If you have a Toshiba drive you will need to use the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test as Toshiba doesn't supply their own. http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

Disk read error on Satellite L650
My Toshiba Satellite L650 will not start up.
When I switch it on, TOSHIBA is display follow by disk read error, press ctrl+alt+del to restart.
I did that and the same thing happens again. So far only F2 and F12 works , tried F8, it gives a loud continous beep then back to the same message.
Can anyone help?

What HDD status is visible in BIOS?
Is HDD recognized in BIOS? You will need to check the first BIOS page.
Usually you should see the HDD and the HDD name.
If the HDD isnt listed, then probably its faulty and needs to be replaced.

Satellite L770D-10J doesnt boot - Disk Read Error

My Laptop can't boot and it gives me the error Message:
An Disk read error as occured, press ctrl+ alt + del.
I did it a couple times and i tried to fix that problem because i have no Win7 DVD to boot from, i tried to reset the BIOS to its standart options, and now it wants a Passwort from me.
I didnt even enter one so i wont know it.
After 3 tries the System shuts down and i have to re-start my Computer.
Now i have an extern harddrive but i cant try to boot from it because my Laptop wants that Passwort.
To enter BIOS or Menue i also need this passwort.
I really need help, if you know anything please contact me with "TOSHIBA LAPTOP SUPPORT". My garantee ran out already.

This BIOS password can be deleted by authorized service provider available in your country.
I have no idea why an BIOS password appears if you did not set it in the past, but fact is that unknown password cannot be deleted by common notebook user. The BIOS password is an very important security feature and only authorized persons are able to delete it.

Regarding the disk read error:
Im not quite sure what disk do you mean exactly but in case the installed system cannot boot up, I think that HDD is faulty and needs to be replaced. After such replacement you would need to install the system again. The easiest way to install the system is the usage of Toshiba recovery disk because all Toshiba tools and drivers would be installed together with the Windows system. -
Satellite P10-304 Disk Read Error
Hi folks...
I'm trying to upgrade my laptop HDD. I'm using an external enclosure and cloning software to clone the Toshiba HDD to a larger WD Scorpio drive.
The clone has worked as far as I can tell, and I can actually boot it via USB from the external enclosure but whenever I install it into the laptop I get a Disk Read Error. The enclosure came with another Hitachi drive which I tried to the same result. I tried using the Product Recovery Disk with the new drive but it would not boot either, I tried the CD with the old drive so I know it works.
Any suggestions as to what could be going wrong for me here?

How much disk space has the new HDD? Maybe the new HDD is to large for this laptop and it would be also interesting how much disk space has the old HDD.
Furthermore I would make a BIOS update.

My son's satelite notebook has the error "A Disk Read Error Occurred, Press control Alt Delete to restart. The computer will not boot in safe mode. Plenty of ways to do this.
Option 1: Boot to a Linux Live CD like Ubuntu, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, or Knoppix and use it to transfer the files to an external hard drive, usb flash drive, or to another computer on a network.
Option 2: Remove the hard drive, place it in an external enclosure, hook it up to a running system, and transfer the files to that system or usb flash drive.

"Disk read error occurred" cannot even load System Recovery
Hello,
yesterday I powered on my computer, and it was almost froze, with only the mouse moving and even the task manager not showing up when called.
I first tried to make it go in standby, as I thought it was some program which didnt start as planned. After I closed the screen , the screen went black, but the pc continued to run. I then pressed the power button, shutting the system the hard way.
After that, I powered back the pc, which now only showed "Disk read error occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" and obviously this wasnt the solution. I tried resetting the BIOS, then running the diagnostics on f2: it ALWAYS passes the test the first time, then if i try to run the diagnostics again, it says "NOT INSTALLED". I tried running the system recovery on f11, but the same "disk read error" appears.
I-ve already confirmed the problem lies in the hard disk itself {hitachi 750gb}, having plugged it in another notebook with an hitachi hard disk and still showing the same problem, while the other hard disk booted just fine in my HP.
I tried with a win7 cd, both recovering and installing a new version, but they both kept frozen for about 1 hour and did nothing.
I then made a bootable USB with Trinity Recovery Kit and after a quick diagnostic, it said boot partition has "unclean" windows files and tried fixing the problem, without success. I-m now writing from a bootable USB linux distro, because i cannot find a bootable iso oh hitachi recovery program, what should I do?
Is it possible the hard disk failed so bad for an uncommon closure of the system? It looks to me like some data got corrupted.
Please help me, as I-m an academy student and I use the PC for almost everything.

"disk read error" and "error loading operating system"
Hello,
I have a problem with my N100 0768 BSG with Windows XP system. When I turned it on there was a lenovo screen with a sign: "to interrupt normal startup press lenovo care button" as usual. But after that instead of Windows loading there was a sign: "disk read error". I rebooted it, run rescue and recovery and started recovery proces.
However after about 20 minutes of recovery process, I saw a blue screen with some error and I could only shut down the computer. When I turned it on again, there was lenovo screen and after that I saw: "error loading operating system". I rebooted it but now I can't even run "rescue and recovery".
I downloaded some diagnostic programme from lenovo site, burned it on dvd and run on my lenovo. When it was doing "Surface scan test" of my hard drive, there was an error: "Error : Found uncorrectable data error."
I thought about buying rescue and recovery cd from lenovo but I heard that they do not sell it in Poland.
Please help me.

Go to Solution.If you have a dual core processor and 2 GB of RAM you will have no problems running Windows 7. You can check the microsoft hardware compatibility site to find out for sure.
Why 32 bit over 64 bit?
Unless you are doing an application like Video rendering or using a Digital Audio Workstation you probably won't notice any performance difference. Most applications today aren't written to take advantage of a 64 bit OS. This will happen over time but for now - you just don't need it. The 32 bit OS will be more compatible with older peripherals like printers and other devices where the manufacturer may not have built a 64 bit driver. Also when you get the upgrade disk you will get both versions so you can start with the 32 bit and always upgrade to the 64 bit at a later time if you really need it. You can only address a little more than 3 GB of RAM in a 32 bit OS but that is usually overkill for most applications people use. A 64 bit OS will allow you to address more memory but you will not gain any performance increases unless the specific application you run is written as a 64 bit application.
I have also found certain older applications that don't work with the 64 bit OS. So it really depends on what peripherals you are using and what applications you tend to use. The safe bet is to go with the 32 bit version.
If you decide to use XP just burn a copy of the XP disk and then you will have one the next time you need to reload. The licensing has nothing to do with the media - it is all about the license you own. Your license key should be on the bottom of your laptop.

Disk read error whilst trying to install vista
Bios Techy help needed here.
I'm using a pentium e6300 dual core with a P35 neo-F. I've tried to load the drivers disk after attempting to set the bios. At each time after saving bios and attempt to load those drivers for vista and raid a message is diplayed "disk read error" appears. I have tried to load vista from the installation disk. This does load to a point but stops.
What the heck do I need to put in bios to get running. Loading the fail safe settings or optimised ones still doesn't get me anywhere.
Techy help seriously required.The problem is not the board, the problem is that you keep installing drivers you do not need (drivers that will trick Vista into believing that a controller exists, that is not there (ICH9R instead of ICH9). The board is perfectly fine. You yourself seem to be causing the disk error (trying to force Vista to use drivers that do not fit the hardware). I have been trying to tell you this from the beginning. Why don't you simply try to skip the driver integration part? Do you even know what you are doing? Even if the board would be able to support RAID (which it doesn't), the RAID Function would need to be enabled in BIOS first to make driver integration a necessary step. As this is impossible on your board (because it does not support RAID), RAID Drivers are simply not necessary. They will only cause (pointless) trouble.
Another explanation is a bad hard drive. Have you checked your hard drive with a diagnostic utility provided by the manufacturer? Maybe it is time to bin the hard drive (or the SATA cable, who knows). This does not look like a mainboard or BIOS Problem at all. -
Error 25: Disk read error - pxe booting issue
Hello All,
Currently trying to install solais 10 via pxe on a virtual machine on local harddisk.
Running in fully virtualized mode the "Error:disk read error 25"
Also running in Paravirtualized mode i get an "Error: Boot loader didn't return any data!"
Please guide me how to proceed.

I got a similar error for a PV image. While setting it up I had used dd command to increase its size to add a couple of partitions. It also has a shared disk attached for RAC usage. It was rebooting fine for the first few times. Now after a complete shutdown it is returning the boot error message as below:

I have tried to install Solaris x86 8 and 9 on a Dell Poweredge 750. Both OSes install successfully but after CD 1, when the system attempts to boot from the new X86_BOOT partition on the hard disk, it does not get beyond the secondary boot loader. I get a screen stating:

After this, the boot drops into the debugger with a "prom_panic: unable to mount filesystem".
The hard disk is an SATA one but is working in PATA compatibility mode fine (has to be; the OS installed, right?)
Also, if I boot into the DCA from CD, do the device probe and then select to boot from the hard disk, Solaris boots fine!
Anyone any ideas why this may be happening and how it might be fixed? It will be a pain to have to always use the DCA to boot this machine.
(Oh, and it definitely isn't a physical problem with the disk - a Linux install worked fine on the same disk).I'm in agreement regarding it being "something" with plug-and-play / bus configuration...my guess is that the DCA device probe does some configuration or initialisation which neither the primary nor secondary boot loader does, meaning the hard disks are not properly accessible at boot time.
Another possiblity that just struck me; in Linux, the CD drive (which is ATAPI) is assigned hda and the hard disk hdc - I guess the system gives priority to the ATA interface over SATA. I might try disabling the ATA interface in the BIOS - perhaps Solaris doesn't like the hard disk not coming first...?
It would also be interesting to try the newer boot loader (4.02 vs. 3.00) from S10 to boot up S8, see if the version change made a difference (straw clutching? Moi?) but my searches thus far have not turned up any useful information on whether this might be possible or not. Anyone know of anyone that tried this?
(Regarding BIOS settings; the system does not have a setting to disable ACPI, and "Plug and play OS" went out with the square wheel, didn't it? :) Anyway, no such setting either)
