Satellite L355D won't boot

I recently bought a refurbished Satellite L355D-S7825.  It arrived about five days ago, and until today there have been no problems with it.
This morning, it worked.  I put it in sleep mode when I left the computer, and when I came back it would not resume Windows.  I pressed and held the power button to turn it off, and then attempted to start the computer again.  No response.
When I press the power button, it sounds like the computer is switching on, the lights come on, and the fan starts running. Then it stops doing anything.  The screen never displays anything, not even the Toshiba logo.  I have since tried turning it on with and without the battery (which is fully charged) and with and without the power cable.  It does not appear to be a power issue.
I do not have a CD to boot from, however my tech-savvy father tried his and the computer did not seem to be able to find the disk in order to start up.
The computer is new, so I have installed some software on it recently, but I have done nothing with the system itself or the hardware.
I'm leaving to go overseas in about 10 days and need to take the computer with me - and between now and then it's holidays, which is going to make it difficult to get the computer fixed if I have to go through a repair center.  So any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

When you turn the laptop does the display flash once?  If you look closely can you see a very faint picture in the background.  If you can then your backlight is out and you will need to send it in for repair.  You can also plug in your desktop monitor and then turn your laptop on to see if it is a backlight/display problem.

  • Satellite m300 won't boot! please help!

    Hi,
I've got a bit of an issue here.. I have a Satellite m300.. a white one..
and it won't boot... I've had this very issue before but it turned out to be an external USB HDD that stopped it from booting up but now even with everything removed it still won't boot.
And it was fine until yesterday, it just gave up.. I am away from home for work so I have all the work stuff and unfortunately without my recovery cd, but my guess is that it won't even read it..
    So this is what happens..
    turn on..
all light come on.. including power and all the white lights around the keypad..
and then maybe 5 sedconds later caplock and numlock(?) green lights flash..
then it's a dead still.. no HDD activities or sound.. just dead quite..
the screen remains black blank through out..
it seems to get stuck here before reaching the post screen.
i thought the power button usually took more than just a push to turn off? it instantly swithces off with a single push of the power button..
I think this laptop is like on sleep or something and can't seem to wak up.. maybe?
    And it has vista.
Please help.. I have some important work files I need to recover at least before formatting..
and that has to wait till I get home which won't be for a month or so..
which also lets me take it back for warranty as well..
    any help appreciated!!!
    cheers,
    Min

Just removed all components. I reset the CMOS. I then reconnected the 20pin and 4pin, 1 stick ram, and the video card (no ide devices, no mouse, keyboard cd drives) and the monitor doesn't show up. I also tried another monitor so it isn't the monitor.
Could it have a bad AGP port?
Any other suggestions? I am thouroughly stumped. Also the power and reset buttons don't work no matter what configuaration I put the front panel connectors in. The Power LED is lit up and it doesn't work and the reset light is off and it doesn't work.
Also noticed one of my fans connected to one of the two other fan pins on the motherboard isn't working.
    What a nightmare.

  • Satellite C660 won't boot to disc or USB

My Toshiba Satellite C660-DSC0QE, running BIOS version 1.80, won't boot into Windows any more - it just goes to the dreaded black screen with white cursor.
I've tried a Win 7 system recovery disc, a USB stick with Kaspersky recovery software on it, and even a full Win 7 installation disc, and it won't boot to any of them.
The boot order is set correctly, the devices (optical drive or USB port) do get read, but they never actually boot into them - there's either an obscure error message or it acts like they weren't there at all.
The obvious answer from these forums seems to be to turn off secure boot mode and to then switch the boot mode from UEFI to CSM. Easier said than done - those menu options don't exist at all in my BIOS/CMOS screens.
Finally, I don't see a way in the instructions to get a BIOS update to happen without being in Windows on the PC already - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9502M10000R01.htm I'm assuming BIOS version 2.00 would have these options.
    Any help gratefully accepted!

    Hi
I assume youve got an white, blinking cursor in the left upper corner.
    Is this correct?
Such symptoms appear in case the system cannot find a bootable device (HDD) or in case of memory (RAM module) problems.
First of all you said that you dont have UEFI / CSM boot mode in the BIOS settings.
So Im asking you what boot mode settings do appear in BIOS exactly?
Did you search for these settings in the right area?
Usually you should have in BIOS an area (tab) called security.
In most cases there you will find secure boot option but the Satellite C660 does not support such option because its too old.
But boot mode (UEFI /CSM) should be available in BIOS. Check the BIOS area System settings
Anyway, as I said above; it could be also an memory issue therefore I would recommend you to check if memory is OK.

  • Satellite A55 won't boot from CD

A friend gave me a Satellite A55 for my daughter. It was working for him until it started making a screeching noise.
I determined that to be the HDD - it stopped when I removed it!
Dropped in another HDD from an other laptop, but it won't boot. That drive is beleived OK but no way to be 100.00% on that.
The unit powers up normally and I have full access to the BIOS (no passsword set). I have tried to boot to a WIndows (full version bootable) CD from the boot screen, hotkey 'c', and from changing the boot order in the BIOS. The CD is known good, and the CD drive lights and spins up on power up. But it will not boot or give any indication that it is trying to read the drive. I have built lots of desktops, but thsi is my first dive into lappys. Still, by my reckoning, even if the HDD has issues, the CD should still boot up and attempt a Windows install. Booting straight to CD, or to HDD first I get a blinking cursor on a blank screen and after a minute or two a "disk error - Press any key to restart" message . The CDROM light does not come on - leading me to believe the laptop is still going straight to the hard drive in both instances.
    What am I missing?
    TIA
Edit: The Bios recognizes the hardware - the HDD as primary and the CDROM as secondary.

Will the drive read any other CDs?
Can the disks be read on a different computer?
Have you tried gently cleaning the disks under lukewarm running water and patting them dry with a clean soft cloth?
Are the disks scratched, smudged, or otherwise disfigured?

  • Re: Satellite C850 won't boot anymore - broken HDD

    Hello Folks,
    I bought a *Toshiba Satellite C850 - 1F2* with *+Windows 8+*.
After installing, upgrading to *+Windows 8.1+* and setting up everything, the whole machine worked pretty fine.
BUT since yesterday the laptop won't boot anymore!
When I turn it on, the HDD makes click and click and the system tries to boot from DVD, from USB, from HDD, from IPV4, from IPV6 and then it says, that there is no bootable device.
Unfortunately I wanted to make the +Windows 8 Restoration-/Rescue-DVDs+ this weekend!
    Huh!!!
Well, I still have an *+original Windows-7-DVD and license+*, which would be good as well (I used it the last years).
    *YET*, I cannot install *+Windows 7+*.
It says something like that, that +this system is not available for Secure Boot+.
    I read about "Secure Boot".
So I pressed F2, turned the laptop on and could with this reach the BIOS.
    It is a *+InsydeH20 Rev. 3.7+*.
*BUT*, when I go to "Boot Mode" I can only see, that this option is greyed and I cannot change from +UEFI Boot+ to +CSM Boot+.
Even the change of the HDD made no difference.
I put in my old HDD with Windows 7 installed (wich works in the other laptop), but the system won't boot, for it is +not suitable for Secure Boot+.
    *So, WHAT NOW?*
I mean, it cannot really be the Toshiba politics, that you need to throw away your laptop, if the HDD breaks, can it?
For I didn't create the Rescue-DVD, I have just my Windows 7 DVD and another HDD with installed Windows 7.
Do I need to buy another Windows 8 licence and another HDD, to install Windows 8 (suitable for Secure Boot) again?
Would it even work like that?
Or is there any chance to upgrade the BIOS, for that I can then change from UEFI Boot to CSM Boot?
Or is there any other chance, to use my other HDD with Windows 7, or at least a new clean HDD, on wich I then can install my Windows 7 OS?
I hope, that someone can give me any good advice, what to do now ... without throwing the Toshiba laptop away ;)
    Thanks in advance!

If the HDD died, in needs to be replaced.
If notebook is still covered by warranty, the HDD will be replaced free of charge. If warranty isnt valid, you will need to pay for the new HDD.
    I think this understandable.
_Now some facts about the Recovery disk._
If you did not create a recovery disk in the past, you could order the recovery medium on this page: http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
The recovery disk would install the Toshiba image and would set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.
    _Regarding the Win 7 installation:_
Usually to install the non UEFI capable system, the secure boot needs to be disabled and boot mode needs to be set to CSM mode.
If this isnt possible you should update the BIOS but to do that you need an running Windows system (Win 8).

  • Toshiba Satellite P200 - won't boot up. I'm scared of losing my files!

Hello. When I turn my computer on, it won't boot up. This appears on the screen:
    WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click ‘next’.
    3. Click ‘ repair your computer’.
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manuafacturer for assistance.
    File: \windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe
    Status: Oxc00000e9
Info: windows failed to load because the kernel is missing, or corrupt
I don't have the installation disc and don't want to restore to the factory settings as I will lose everything on my computer. Is there a way of getting it to the last recovery point? I haven't tried anything yet.
    Thank you!

Two ways of reaching the data if your hard drive is still alive, Sue.
    (1) Download a free CD that boots to another operating systems or to a preinstall environment and copy important files to external media. A popular bootable disc is Ubuntu. There's also KNOPPIX, Bart's, UBCD4Win, SystemRescueCd, and others.
    (2) Remove the hard drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and access it from another computer. To remove the hard drive, see the first two steps here.

  • Satellite L305 won't boot until I press "Enter" repeatedly

My wife is going on a mission trip to Africa, and acquired a used Satellite L305-S5907 to donate to a needy student there. I used the original Toshiba recovery discs to reformat and reinstall Vista to original factory state, and have run all the endless Windows updates, including SP1 and 2. Everything seems to work fine except for one weird quirk. When I start or restart the computer, it powers up, but won't start to boot unless I repeatedly press Enter (or F2 or F12), and then go through the Boot screen or Setup screen. The computer was doing this before I restored it, but since it had belonged to a high school girl I hoped that a clean reinstall would fix things. The only thing that occurs to me is to update the BIOS, but drilling down through the levels of Toshiba's website, I get as far as a link to BIOS 2.20, but that page won't even load, let alone download the installer. I've searched for another way into Toshiba's download site, but can't find one, and I don't want to risk a third party BIOS fix.
She's leaving for Kenya next weekend, and wants to donate a conputer that's working smoothly, so any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

I dumped Vista operating system a long time ago and installed Win 7.  I’ve used different OS system since Win 98; I thought Vista was not prime time.  Have you tried to fix with Windows STARTUP REPAIR if you haven’t found a solution yet?

  • Satellite A200 won't boot from recovery disk

I need to reinstall the notebook but every time I boot from CD it won't.
I tried every boot disk ( xp pro, xp home, Toshiba recovery disk ) at house but none of it works.
The recovery disk boots (windows is loading) but after loading my laptop restarts.

    > Try to run Recocery CD under Windows and then choose reinstall option from cd menu
Something like that is not possible using the Toshiba Recovery disk
    > tried every boot disk ( xp pro, xp home, Toshiba recovery disk ) at house but none of it works.
In my opinion your CD/DVD drive can not read the inserted medias and therefore its not possible to restore the operating system.
I think the CD/DVD drive should be checked by an notebook technician and if necessary it should be replaced.

  • Satellite L455 won't boot up or repair

I have a Satellite L455, that worked fine as of shutting it down on Thursday evening.  When I tried to start it up on Friday, it would start but only go to a black screen and show the pointer.  After an hour of this, I turned it off and back on.  When it came up, it gave me the message that it had shutdown improperly and that it needed to repair the startup files or to start up normally.  I selected the option to Repair the files.  Again, it came up to the black screen and showed only the pointer.  Nothing ever came up.  I turned it off again, booted up on the recovery dvd and it finally loaded that after about 30 mins.  I selected the option to got to a command prompt, and it went to the X drive for the recovery drive.  I could change it to the D drive also.  When I tried to change to the C drive, it thought for awhile and gave me a message that could not access that drive, due to an i/o error.  I have tried to repair the startup files from the recovery disk, but after saying it was working for 24 hours, nothing changed.  Is it possible that the C drive is dead?  Or is there another way that I can check this to make sure?  I have also tried to boot up in Safe Mode, but after holding the F8 key for approximately 2 mins it would not go into Safe Mode, but again came up and tried to repair the start up files.  I know the information is sketchy, but if needed I go through this all again to get the exact err msgs.  Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Good luck with it, I've been trying to get Windows 7 back up for over a week now. I tried the same as you and even with two different sets of rocovery disk. I end up with a black screen and a white cursor. I can't believe that companies are cheaping out on couple dollars to include recovery media. Now it's crashed and the recovery on the hard drive will not restore it and the disk I had to buy and burn myself don't work. If I want it to work with Windows 7 again it looks like I'm going to have to pay for something that should have been in the box to start with.
I have managed to get my computer working so that I can use it by booting Linux Mint 9 Xfce live USB. If you have a decent size USB stick you can run it live and even save you settings and changes.

  • Satellite P20 won't boot up

    Hello -
my usually reliable if slightly old satellite will not boot up.
It switches on and then after about 30 seconds the fan comes on but the screen stays blank and no boot up.
I have tried unclicking memory and hard drive etc and also disconnecting power and holding down the power on button withou any joy.
Does anyone have any magic they can share?
    Thanks in advance.

    >Does anyone have any magic they can share?
There is no magic solution for such issues
You have checked already the essential parts like memory modules.
Faulty RAM can prevent the notebook from booting but even if the HDD would be faulty, the notebook should be able to power on therefore I dont think it could be an faulty HDD.
In your case it looks like motherboard (CPU or GPU) problem.
Since the P20 is really old I would not make an effort to replace or to fix these parts because new motherboard is really expensive.

  • Satellite L500D won't boot up Windows Vista

Hi.  I have a Satellite L500D which failed to boot up Windows Vista (Home Premium).  It shut down normally the previous night, with no power interruptions or other abnormal events during shutdown.  The following day, it failed to boot Windows and went into a diagnostic screen.  This diagnostic attempted to resolve and fix the problem, but failed.  It didn't give me the option of Windows "Safe Mode" either.
As the laptop was under warranty, I returned it to the retailer.  By hitting F8 at bootup we got into Safe Mode, then copied my folders to an external hard drive.  They then "recovered" the laptop (not sure if that meant re-formatting the hard drive and re-installing Vista?)
    Q.  Has anyone else experienced this problem, and is there a preventative measure?
I would really appreciate any advice on this problem.
    Regards
    Mark Brymner
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You asked if that has ever happened to someone before. It's almost like asking if you ever had a flat tire. It's happened to someone at least once, or in my case, many of times.
You didn't mention if there was a specific error code, but most failure to boot into Windows problems are because of a corrupt or missing boot file(s). I know within the last few months, Microsoft has pushed some updates that cause people's machines not to boot properly. There really is nothing you can do about it. Just ensure you are not shutting the machine down while the computer is updating.
Keep your important documents/pictures/music backed up just in case.

  • Satellite S955 won't boot - no POST and black screen

    Hi
I've a problem with my s955 (14 months old). It is not able to boot anymore. when switched on I can hear only cooling fan spinning up and down and nothing more. Last time it took almost half an hour to bypass this failure. When it's on it does not show any problem at all. When you switched off it's better praying. Now it seems gone. After an hour I cannot see any sign of life except cooling fan activity.
I went thru all the tricks mentioned in another Toshiba forum like power off, take out the battery, keep and hold the power button for at least 60 seconds. I even replaced the internal li-ion rtc battery but with no luck. Because it's not covered by guarantee anymore I opened it. No sign of burnt except a suspicious oxidization of some contacts.
I've contacted Toshiba Italy (even though this is a USA model) and I'm waiting for a possible answer next week. I ran out of possible solution except mobo replacement. Is there anybody around who did face the same issue? Could you please give me an help?
    Thanks and best regards
    Pyder

Hi, no news from Toshiba Italy but I've found a Toshiba authorized workshop that can possibly fix this problem. It seems that, beyond other speculations, the problem can be originated by the mainboard power microfuse (read this interesting reply by maxtek73 [http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Batteries-and-Power/My-Toshiba-Satellite-Laptop-Will-Not-Turn-On/m-p/584008#M11147] at the end of the post). It seems reasonable. Actually, keyboard, dvd player, battery charge, hd and cooling fan are powered up by the mainboard; it seems that there is not enough current to pass initials tests before the POST. That could explain why the cooling fan is trying to spin up at max speed but it cannot. Id remind that at power on, any IT equipment push the fans at max speed and then slow down at normal rate before going into POST process. Ill have a talk with the workshop technician and Ill keep you informed.
    Best Regards

  • Satellite C660D won't boot - BIOS update failed

    Hello,
In last few days I've been getting a blue screen of death with the error "whea_uncorrectable_error", I read something about updating BIOS because the error is probably caused by old version of BIOS. I did the update correctly but as soon as my laptop restarted, nothing was booting.
The fan and the keyboard are working but nothing else. I tried removing the RAM, removing the CMOS battery, pulling the main battery out and holding the power button, but nothing seems to be working.
Can you please help me and tell me how to recover my BIOS?

Yeah but the update process went trough, installation was complete and after the notebook restarted nothing came up, black screen and no response.
Can I flash EPROM with the usb even though BIOS is not working? Doesn't that mean the usb port won't work?

  • Satellite C655D won't boot properly after MalwareBytes scan/repair

I ran a scan with MalwareBytes and deleted the resulting files (some of them had the term "PUP" in the filename, not sure if that means anything).  After the delete I was prompted to reboot the computer, which I did.  Ever since then the computer will not boot up completely, a bar goes across the bottom of the screen saying "Windows is loading files" that stalls about a third of the way through and the computer starts beeping.  I tried doing a system restore and it still happens.  Any ideas?

  • Satellite A205-won't boot up

I have a Satellite A205-S5831.  It is a little over 2 years old.  One day while using the computer, it clicked and shut off.  I tried to boot it back up.  It would boot up but not stay on longer than a couple of minutes.  It did this using the battery only, the AC adapter only, & a combo of the two.  I had purchased an extended warranty, so I sent it off to get repaired.  They replaced the hard drive and reinstalled the OS (Windows Vista).  Upon receiving it back, it continued to do the same thing.  I returned it again where they re-soldered the motherboard, etc. and cleaned the inside of the unit including the fan.  Once again, they reinstalled the OS.  Now, it will not even boot up.  It starts to, but then shuts right back off.  The battery and AC adapter have also been replaced, but nothing has fixed the problem.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

Are you writing about Windows or BIOS password?
Anyway, on this virtual way it is not easy to offer some exact explanation what may be wrong there.
Has your son many important data saved on this machine? If not you should try to reinstall OS and test it with factory settings.
What you can try is to enter BIOS settings and leave the machine 5 minutes to see if notebook will go OFF. If not, set BIOS to default settings and test it again.
Is cooling fan maybe loud when you start the machine?
