Satellite L500-1R1 dead after copying files

Hi there,
got sisters laptop which was continuously crashing in windows7(still getting BSOD with various reasons, tried antivirus scan, unchecking msconfig startup items etc. with no effect), so deciced to reinstall OS.
Gets into safe mode through F8 (which was only working) to copy whole drive to my USB external drive, joke is when I got back, screen was completely black (off), LEDs on, so turned it off with power button and now laptop wont start at all.
When I press power button, power LED is on, fan spins up for 2 secs, and nothing more. Battery is normally charging, sometims there is also hdd led on.
Tried everything found on google (30secs reset, remove ram sticks, remove hdd, remove battery, connect external monitor, etc..) and nothing helped.
What could go wrong?? Its approx. 4years old, will cmos reset help and how to do that?
Thanks

> will cmos reset help
You mean to disconnect or to remove the CMOS battery?
No, I dont think so
> What could go wrong??
Difficult to say in your case I would insert new RAM modules just to check if its RAM problem. You said you removed RAM stick but Im not quite sure if its good enough to test it. I would test unit using new modules of course this is just an idea and nobody would be able to say that this will fix the problem
But fact is that there is a hardware problem and I guess it could be an motherboard problem if new RAM modules would not help you.

At startup hold down the Option/Alt key and from the screen that comes up select your OS X partition to start the computer from. Then use the Boot Camp Assistant app to Remove Windows and the partition you reated for it and it will Automatically place the space you allocated for the Windows install back into the OS X partition.
    NOTE:
Do NOT use Disk Utility to erase the partition that was created for the Windows install. Use the Boot Camp Assistant app again to do that.

  • Permissions "read only" after copying files FROM server

    Hi everyone!
OK, just setup a Leopard server. Clients all at Tiger - level..for now. This is what I want to do:
I want a read only - network library drive so that the clients can grab files from but then modify locally on their machines. No need to put back on that server as I have another system in place for things like that.
*The problem:* If I propagate permissions at "read only" then when the user copies to their local drives, the owner changes but the permissions remain. They have to manually change the permissions back to match their local, then they can work with the file. When we're talking about hundreds of files for 15+ users a day, then it is quite a pain and a show stopper.
I had this setup previously on a panther server with no trouble. I've maintained settings as close as possible but still having trouble.
Any ideas as to what I'm missing?
FYI- I don't want to change permissions to read/write to protect the library from tampering.
    thanks

+If I propagate permissions at "read only" then when the user copies to their local drives, the owner changes but the permissions remain.+
OK, from your description, you'd have to have the POSIX owner's permissions set to just read-only or read and execute. As you've observed, a copy obtains permissions in the following manner:
The POSIX owner changes to match the account performing the copy (the action-bearing account), and the POSIX group is inherited from the copy's destination parent. The POSIX permissions stay the same, though. (Inherited ACL entries on the original are also lost; explicitly-defined ones are preserved, and new inherited entries apply to the copy from its destination parent.)
All of this is proper behavior, and there's an easy way to make it work to suit your needs.
Since the POSIX owner changes to the action-bearing account for the copy, you'll want to ensure that the original POSIX owner's permissions are read and write. This does not require that you make the original's POSIX owner the same as that of the action-bearing account. An example would better illustrate the situation:
Example POSIX Permissions for the Original on the server:
Owner root can read and write
    Group somegroup can only read
    Everyone else can only read
Thus, let's say that tsmith is the action-bearing account. So tsmith copies the file to his desktop, and the POSIX permissions now look like this:
Owner tsmith can read and write
    Group staff can only read
    Everyone else can only read
Thus, tsmith receives the POSIX permissions of the POSIX group or everyone else field on the server - let's say there are no ACLs for the time being - and he becomes the owner of the copy. Since the original owner, root on the server, had read and write permissions, those permissions are preserved and given to tsmith for the copy.
Another way to deal with this situation would be to use ACLs by placing an inheritable ACL granting full control or read and write for tsmith on his home folder. Any new items copied to or created in his home folder would inherit that ACL. Similarly, an inherited ACL deny entry (but not an explicitly-set entry) affecting tsmith and the delete and delete_child controls could be placed on the affected server share point's top-level before the original was copied there. Then, any subsequent copies from the server volume would drop this inherited ACL entry entirely. These would, however, be much more complicated situations, and your scenario is best handled in the POSIX-only fashion. (This doesn't mean that you have to disable ACLs on the server - just don't apply them for the share point!)

  • Satellite L755D-S5204 dead after new Win XP setup

Regarding that Toshiba Lab Top which I have Bought last weak,
Model: Satellite *L755D-S5204*, I had to setup a new system (Windows XP SP3 32bit)
But there is a one major problem; which is that the drivers definitions DvD was not Included with the Lab Top, and my Lab Top is currently dead.
I will be grateful if you provide me with a download link for the drivers Definitions DvD.

Well, you will not get the Toshiba Win XP Utilities working because there are no any Win XP driver or tools available for this notebook series. I really don't understand why you did not check this before installing an old system...
Of course LAN driver, WLan or BT stack could be downloaded from other notebook series or driver page You have to know what LAN or WLan card is installed in your notebook for that I recommend installing an hardware diagnostic software like Everest Home Edit or SANDRA Software to get more details about the hardware parts.
Then you could google for some compatible drivers

  • Toshiba satellite p70-A dead after update to bios v 1.5

hi there i have toshiba satellite p70 with win 8.1 after updating bios from v 1.40 to v 1.50 the windows don't stop to give me blue screen . i try ti install anther version of  Win but i have the same problem.plz help me

    Satellite P70-ABT3G22
    Bug Check 0x113: VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR
I reinstalled the windows 8.1 but the second error code is still happening,
If this occurs just after restoring the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents, then you have a hardware failure.
If you installed Windows 8.1 instead of restoring, you need to restore to factory-new from a recovery drive in order to be sure.

  • Satellite L500 - black screen after manual or auto restart

    Hi everyone,
This has frustrated me for three weeks but I have only just realised it is associated with restart either manual or software requested.
My 6 week old L500 laptop refuses to do other than display lights for indiactors on front - no light on keyboard, no screen, fan running but no disk activity I can hear.
I have somehow managed to break through on three occasions by forcing shut down using the power on/off hold down, removing battery waiting and then starting up.
Earlier today it decided to restart under this method and I was able to quickly jump in and dump my Libraries and outlook.pst to an external hard drive cause my business runs off it.
Anyone know a solution to this problem?
This is the first Toshiba I have ever owned and it's really frustrating to have to fire up this 4 year old Acer to find a solution to my problem.
Maybe the problem is Windows 7 but can't find my way through that place to an answer.
    Anyone, please???

    Hi
You mean the L500 does not boot anymore?
The workaround removing the battery and ac adaptor doesnt help anymore?
Hmm usually this should not happen sometimes the notebook could hang somewhere during the stand by or hibernation and the mentioned workaround could be a option to wake up the unit
Its hard to say whats going wrong here possibly its hardware related issue
So maybe it would be the best get in contact with an local ASP the warranty should be valid and I think everything should be done for free

  • Satellite C660D-117 dead after Bios update

Yesterday I tried to execute bios upgrade but it got stuck in step 3 (of 27 I think).
I left it as this for more than an hour, nothing happened.
I also tried to cancel it or press CTRL+ALT+DEL but the machine was completely frozen.
It did not react when I pulled out the power cord.
Basically the only thing that I could do was to remove battery that I did. PROBLEM - now the laptop is completely dead. Not like others were saying that it boots. It does not do absolutely anything - even there are no LED lights on when I plug the power cord.
I tried to remove the battery and hold the power button for a while in order to reset the CMOS, but no luck.
It does not react at all.
Do you think it is solvable by flashing the CMOS again (if it is even possible) or do I have to purchase a new motherboard?
    Thanks

    > Do you think it is solvable by flashing the CMOS again (if it is even possible) or do I have to purchase a new motherboard?
Its difficult to say in most cases it should be possible to bring the notebook back to life flashing the ROM module (where BIOS is stored) once again using an crisis disk.
I dont know if this would help you but take a look into this thread:

Otherwise recommend asking an Toshiba service technician for a help

  • BB z10 dead after bluescreen, how to copy or backup files?

My BB z10 went completly dead after bluescreen. It wont charge, connect to computer or anything only led is flashing twice all the time. Phone was running on 10.3 os and about two months ago started randomly shut down, even with battery on 60-70%. First i pulled out my phone from otterbox case cause I thought it was due to overheating it helped a little but afer few weeks it started again. Second I thought it was due to not connecting baterry pins so i put a little pice of paper for better connection. This helped for about a month. Yesterday phone again shut down without no reason so I pulled it out from otterbox as always and phone turned on normally. After few hours bluescreen appeared and phone went completly dead as I described. After connecting phone to computer it finds him for a few seconds and on BB link i can reset the phone, or cant I because when I try to do it phone connection is lost after few seconds. The thing is i cannot simply change the phone or OS due to important files i have. Is there any way to copy all the files or backup them from that dead bb? the files are encrypted but i can decrypt them later, i just want to copy all of the data. Please help

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
If the device will not stay powered up, there is no native way to extract the files from it. This, of course, is the reason that backups are a pro-active, not a reactive thing to be done.
Further, if you used the device encryption for those files, then no you can't "decrypt them later"...they can only be decrypted on that specific device. If you used a different encryption method, then of course you can use whatever it supports.
Based on all you describe, I suggest you obtain access to an identical device that does not have problems. Trade batteries and see what happens. The result will narrow down if your battery or device itself is the root of the problem.
    Good luck!

  • UPDATE : Toshiba Recovery Wizard 'cannot read from source file or disk' error (satellite L500)

UPDATE 2: Phoned Toshiba tech support again, guided by techie to begin the recovery again. Just before phoning I was able to go into recovery options and view the drive setup and all the files that couldn't be read are on the CD so I've no idea why the error kept occuring, and neither did the techie. Fingers crossed it works this time but I'm not overly hopefully given that we've just done exactly the same as I did before.  UPDATE 1: I got into the BIOS and reset everything back to defaults and yay, my toshiba recovery wizard now starts! :-D  On the down side, when trying to do a factory default software / out of the box recovery I continually get error messages with regards to copying the files, for example
cannot read from source file or disk
    7z.dll
    Type application extension
    size 585kb
    date modified 7/14/2009 10.26pm
other read / copy errors include PREINST6.SWM, BOOT_32, BOOTPRIORITY, CHECKMAXPTSIZE, CHGBOOT, CPU, CPUCHECK, CREATEPARTITION, CTRLDRVINFO, DISKWIPE, DMI, DPINST32, EBLIB.DLL, ERRORDIALOG, EW3BOOTSEQ, FWLINK, FWLINK.SYS, GETHDDINFO, GETKEYSTATE, IMAGEX, INFILED, INITRECAREA, KRAIADAPI.DLL ..... at which point I decided to 'skip all' :-/
Any explanations as to what's going on and how I might be able to fix it would be very much appreciated! :-)  Thank you!
I have a two and half year old satellite L500 with an Intel i-3 and 4 gigs of RAM, on which I was running Windows 7.
Admittedly it’s had rather a hard life (I ran some very demanding CAD / graphics software on it) but it had always performed well until just recently, when after suffering several BSOD (which had never happened before), the hard drive failed.
I partitioned and formatted a brand new hard drive (which is perfectly fine and functions normally when hooked up to another laptop with a SATA to USB cable) and obtained system recovery discs from Toshiba.  Unfortunately, when I try and run the first disc, windows starts to load files but then generates an error screen with the message Error F3-F100-0003 and a request to turn the computer off.
    When I use the windows Memory Diagnostic to get into the Windows Boot Manager Screen I get the following;
Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware / software change might be the case.
    To fix the problem
Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
Choose your language settings and click ‘next’
    Click ‘repair your computer’
    File: \boot\memtest.exe
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
I can also use F8 on startup to get into the advanced boot options but selecting any of them simply results in the F3-F100-0003 error message.  I’ve run a memory test using the UBCD, which tells me the memory is fine, and tried another hard drive (which also works perfectly well in another laptop) but no joy.  On phoning Toshiba support the techie said my hard drive had failed, but as I say, both hard drives are perfectly fine / usable when hooked up to another laptop.  I’m now completely stuck as to what the problem is and how I might resolve it – any advice / suggestions would be most gratefully received! Thank you in advance :-)

    Satellite L655-S5096
    Downloads here.
the second disc gives me the the "cannot read from source file or disk PREINST8.SWM"
My best guess is that the disc is not readable. Try copying it to another. Sometimes that works.
Otherwise, order new discs from Toshiba.

  • After copying a file from NTFS to HFS volume, file size changed when viewing in Windows

    Hi guys,
I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, I have to adopt a "stupid" way: in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.
    How could this happen?

I am not sure if this is what your seeing but...
The same unaltered file on two different volumes might use different amounts of disk space. This is because a 'disk' is divided in to 'blocks' and a block (also historically known as a 'sector') is a certain minimum size. So if disk-1 has a block size of 512 bytes and disk-2 has a block size of 1024 bytes then a file containing just 10 bytes will use up twice as much space on disk-2 as disk-1 even though it is the exact same file.
Beyond that, Macs can add additional information like Spotlight tags, labels, icons, etc. which make a file bigger. If you are modifying a file then presumably that also implies adding additional content e.g. for a Word document more text and this will make it bigger. Also depending on some programs are configured or designed 'deleting' text may only mark it as deleted and not really delete. This can apply to older versions of Word which has a 'Fast Save' feature, new versions have removed this and do a proper delete.
You would have to give more details like what you are doing to the document, what kind of document, and what the two sizes are.
Finally, there is one other potential difference, some systems and manufacturers use 1024 as a unit for measuring file and disk sizes, some use 1000. It will be the same number of bytes in each case but 1000 bytes in one case would exactly equal 1MB, and in the other it would be 0.9765MB.

W64,  cs6 bridge when I move or copy files the  context menu does not retain  recent folder destinations after I close the program. The context options that show are the ones from original install. The workspace I set up is also gone. I have every explorer box and cleaner checked to save recent. Had to disable nivedia desktop software because of weird display conflict. Have Dell pro support and they cannot fix. Any ideas to help me with this would be appreciated.

Self-solved!  I work in column view in Finder so get there in a Finder window with folders and files appearing.
There really is no problem, just select an ITEM in the COLUMN before right-clicking!
The "old" context menu will appear. If you click in the white space in that column (or anywhere in a Finder window) and then place the cursor over a folder or file WITHOUT selecting it and right-click you will bring up the secondary context menu - Open, Copy, Duplicate, View Options and a greyed out Labels option. No "Move to Trash".

  • Satellite L500 - System hanging on startup screen after Windows update

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help. My Satellite L500 is hanging on the blue startup screen after it restarted after a windows update, the mouse arrow is moving, and there seems to be some hard drive activity with some flickering in the system indicator lights. Other than that, nothing? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Denise

It was stuck on the Windows 7 welcome screen, all I had to do was hold the power button down for longer and restart it properly. I was just concerned as they always say not to turn the computer off during an update.
*All good now* thanks anyway :)
