  • Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965 - Are there any newer BIOS Failure updates? Last update was 2011

    I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965 and got the BSOD. I have searched the forums and found a post;
                  BIOS Update Failure Satellite L505D-S5965
I tried creating a "Boot CD-ROM Installation Method   Create CD-ROM Now but the webpage is no longer there.
I am having the exact same problem as the above post. The keyboard is not functional once you get past the Toshiba screen.
    I followed the following instructions:
‎04-07-2011 06:57 PM - Reflash for INSYDE BIOS.
Using a separate computer if necessary perform the following:
    1) Download your notebook model's BIOS "*.exe" file from the Support section. Mine was: slm0v150.exe
    2) Extract the files from the "*.exe" file.
    3) Locate the file that ends with ".fd", this is your actual BIOS file.
*(for different brand BIOS's the file may have a different extension such as .rom or .bin)
    4) Rename your BIOS file to: "BIOS.fd" without the quotations.
    5) Format a USB Flash Drive to (FAT or FAT32) file system.
    6) Copy your newly named "BIOS.fd" file to the root directory of the Flash Drive. (Not inside any folders)
On the corrupt computer perform the following:
    7) Remove the Battery, AC Adapter, and Hard Drive.
    8) Plug the Flash Drive with your "BIOS.fd" file on it into any USB port.
    9) While holding the Fn and F key on your keyboard:
      a) Plug the AC adapter into your computer.
      b) Hold the Power button until the computer turns on.
      c) Release the Power button and both keys once you hear the fan turn on.
    10) Observe your Flash Drive's LED's blinking, wait until your computer turns off and remove the Flash Drive.
    11) Replace Battery and Hard Drive.
    12) You're computer should be all set!
I can punch F2 to enter BIOS or F12 to enter Boot Manager, but the system doesn't respond to keyboard in either.
I attempted to flash BIOS off a USB as described in the above mentioned post, and it never worked. My flash drive lights up and then goes off. The BIOS version is the most current available according to Toshiba, 1.5
When I removed the HD and don't have a Recory disc in the DVD drive, I get:
"PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, check cable
    hPXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
No Bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
This is the same with the BIOS flash drive or without."
I have searched for any follow ups beyond the above post and can't find any. I appreciate any help, thank you in advance.

  • New hard disk after time machine restore doesn't boot, NEED HELP

    Hi,
I just bought a new hard disk for my computer and it works fine if you just install the OS X, but every time I do a restore from my time machine I received a screen after the boot that tells the following:
"You need to restart your computer, hold on the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again."
This message appears in many languages, I do the restart and the same message comes again every time.
I already tried the disk utility when I boot with the OS X DVD and says that the disk is ok. I also tried a PRAM reset.
The result is the same message.
Does any body knows what I am doing wrong or why is this happens?
    thanks for any help

This is a kernel panic. They are often, but not exclusively, hardware related. Some reading for you:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If this only happens after a full restore from TM, that might suggest something you are copying back over is causing the problem. You may want to ask in the Snow Leopard TM forums about how to identify the culprit, or do a partial restore that might skip the system files likely to cause a panic:

  • Satellite L505D-S5986 - trouble installing Ubuntu using live USB/CD

Hello all I need urgent support from all and the ubuntu community.
I am a passionate Ubuntu user and I have been using for a year. My old laptop got crashed when I flashed the bios.
I now bought a TOSHIBA L505d-S5986 laptop which has amd athlon 2 dual core M300 processor and ATI Radon 4100 video card.
I had huge trouble installing ubuntu when I put the live usb/cd it took very long time to boot and when it got inside the OS every thing freeze.
I then tried fedora but even that dint work well it got into the same problem freeze!
I searched and found that its due to the error acpi:lnxvideo:' unexpected exit with status 0x0009.
This also given in this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1301101
So I put the acpi=off in the grub boot menu and then added to the gconf and now ubuntu is working. But the system monitor shows just one processor in use (again due to disabling acpi I guess) and ofcourse when I remove the power ubuntu dosent dim the screen and dosent show any battery sign.
All linux guys and developers please post a solution for this hardware module.
    Awaiting your replies
    Thanks
    Vineeth

    Hi Vineeth,
This is very strange and Im only using Knopix bootable DVD sometimes so Im not a Linux expert.
There is no official support for Linux from Toshiba but the only interesting that I have founded is this:

Maybe there you can get more help.

  • Satellite L505D-S5965 and Recovery Disk Creater

I did a clean install of windows 7 when I upgraded and no longer have the Toshiba recovery disk creator.
I can still boot the HDD recovery tool I did not delete this partition when I upgraded. I would like to be able to create a recovery disk for my system in case anything ever happened to my Hard Drive.
Where can I download he Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator tool? Is there another way for me to get a recovery Disk?

    Wait a moment.
I believe with your answers you go in the wrong direction.
Timox asked very good question but you didn't offer exact answer.
Please don't mix two very important but completely different things:
    # New notebooks are delivered without recovery DVD and this installations DVD must be created by notebook owner. For this purposes Toshiba has installed small tool called "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator". This tool can be used for installations disc creation only.
    # I don't know what do you understand under HDD recovery tool but fact is that recovery image is saved on second partition and can be used for HDD recovery installation. This can be done if you have factory settings only. After own operating system installation you will probably not be able to start HDD installation anymore even if the recovery files are still saved on second partition.
As I can see you have US notebook model. I don't know exactly how it works there but the principle must be the same as here in Europe.
At start-up you must press F8 or zero to enter Advanced boot options. There you should find option Repair my computer and following this option you will enter System recovery options with Toshiba recovery option.
When you install own operating system this option will be gone. I describe now how it works on European models but I believe on US models it must be similar.
    So again the important questions:
Have you ever tried to start this HDD recovery installation (F8 or 0 at start-up)?
Can you start it now after Win7 installation? If not than you have a problem. I just hope you have created recovery DVD when you got your notebook.

  • New hard disk not available as restore volume

Replaced fried hard drive with a new 160GB WD Scorpio. Used Disk Utilities to partition properly (Apple Partition Map (powerbook G4 Al), HD Extended Journaled. New drive shows up fine as option for a full system install. But when going through the Restore from Backup process, no drive (not even the source volume) shows up in the list as a possible restore volume.
Do I first need to install 'a' system on the drive before it becomes eligible for a Restore from Backup? Or is there something else amiss?

You're absolutely right! And I did read 'recovering your entire system' before posting here.
However, it does not list installing a full system as one of the steps to take. See below:
    (copied from Help:)
    To recover your entire system:
Connect your Time Machine backup disk to your computer.
If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, make sure the disk has been repaired or replaced.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disk, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
    (end of quote)
note that it says 'startup disk repaired or replaced' which may implicitly mean to install a system, but what level of knowledge would be required of a user to conclude that?
I think it might be helpful if this entry included both a partitioning and system installation instruction
That said, I still appreciate your replies, and by now, my wife's laptop has been restored to its glorious state from less than 48 hours ago, with no files lost, thanks to time machine.
(anybody who runs into the same problem is welcome to email me for details.)

  • Time Machine to new 4TB disk fails - disk scrubber?

Is there a utility available so I can scrub this new 4TB disk drive?
The RESTORE to this disk failed, as well all new attempts to create a Time Machine Backup to this disk.
    Thanks, Jon

    Thanks, that's a useful resource.
I've been using Time Machine for years on several boxes.  Most recently the backup has been on a 3TB drive, but that's getting a bit tight.  Moving the image to the 4TB failed (using Disk Utility) and failing that, resorting to a brand new backup on the 4TB which has also failed during the copy on a few attempts.  Unfortunately each attempt takes about 24 hours (the Restore was 4 days before it failed).
I'm not convinced the 4TB platters are clear.  Perhaps on next partition attempt I'll tell the server to erase the disk to see if there's a bad sector.

  • Disabled iphone 4! never synced it and it wont restore!

FIRST OF ALL. i didnt steal this phone. i have all the info to prove it.
i never synced it to a computer because i didnt see a reason why to sit down and do it. well i made a passcode and then fell asleep and woke up not knowing the passcode. i called apple and talked to 2 different people. they both told me to restore it and i went through with the process twice but it does not restore the phone at all. i never synced it.
i have the latest version of itunes
literally.. the phone doesnt change at all.
the phone is brand new and i cant possibly go with out it.

it wanted to download an update (think it was ios) i clicked update and its been off since. it wont restore and displays error code 3194. im not technical minded and dont understand what it tells me to do on here!!!

  • My HDD broke and I bought a new one. I never made a recovery disc. No way to recover?

As the topic states, I broke my HDD on my Toshiba Satellite L745-S4110 and I just bought a new one. The hard drive is completely fried; the BIOS cannot detect it upon start up.
It broke because I bumped the hard drive while it was writing data, but that's beside the point; the obvious fix was to buy a new hard drive.
So I've bought this new hard drive, and now I want to re-install Windows on it as well as all of the associated drivers for the components on the laptop. I want to be perfectly, crystal clear; there is NO WAY for me to do this without forking $30 over to Toshiba for them to ship me a recovery disk? (No, I never made one while I had the chance.)
If this is the case, I'm just going to pirate windows and hope for the best on getting those drivers back. From the wise words of Gabe Newell:
"We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem," he said. "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."
I already own a license to the copy of Windows for this laptop, yet I must still spend money to (legally) obtain the software that I already own a license to use? That's definitely a service problem.
The other reason that pirating windows is the better option here, is that the associated recovery disk (which I will have to pay $30 to get) is going to have a bunch of shovelware on it that I absolutely do not want. A pirated copy will not have any of this.
Sorry, I'm done ranting for now. Anyways, to re-iterate; there is no option to simply download the needed recovery disk as an ISO and then burn it myself?

    Satellite L745-S4110
    Drivers and utilities are here.
No need to pirate anything. As you say, you have already purchased Windows 7 Home Premium. And as the mad RN says, you can legally download Windows. (Microsoft sells activation - not the software.)
Select Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 (bootable) from this site.
Download Windows 7 Integrated With SP1 ISO – Official Direct Download Links
Be sure to partition and format during Setup. (No need for this using the recovery media. And you get a recovery-environment partition plus a full-recovery partition.)
       Installing and reinstalling Windows 7
Good luck on installing the drivers and utilities. The order is problematic. Best luck seems to be had by installing the Intel chipset and display software prior to other drivers. (No need for any of this when you use recovery media, of course.)
If you cannot activate Windows using the product key on the bottom of the computer, come back here for tips. (Windows on the recovery media is preactivated.)
One advantage to this approach is you'll avoid all the extra garbage, especially offers from Amazon, NetZero, Norton, QuickBooks, and Skype.
My time, however, is worth way more than the $30. I would opt for ordering the recovery media and removing the garbage. But that's your call.

  • Recovering an iPhoto Library from damaged HD and moving it to new HD

    Dear Experts,
I am seeking directions on a procedure that might be straight forward but I must be do this correctly. I lost my iMac internal HD when it stopped booting. The System was 10.4.8 and iPhoto6. Booting from Norten showed 68 damaged blocks. Set up a PowerBook and connected via fire wire to iMac and ran in target mode. I Finder copied the entire contents of the dead HD to an external FW drive. Lost about 3 GB's of data from dead HD but don't know what is missing. The iPhoto Library from the dead HD has, among many files, a "Library.iPhoto" file as well as a "Library6.iPhoto" file. It also contains Original, Modified, and Recovered Photos folders.
I replaced the damaged internal HD drive with a new drive. Installed a clean version of Tiger on the new internal HD and did all software updates to get me current to 10.4.8. When I opened iPhoto6 from the new internal HD there were, naturally, no photos. When I opened iPhoto with "option-iPhoto open", I was instructed to select a Library. I directed iPhoto to the "iPhoto Library" from the external FW drive. Every thing appears to be normal, with the original organizational structure intact.
I now want to move the original AND modified photos from the external FW drive to my new internal HD, preserving roll names, ratings, keywords, i.e. the complete database. Afterwards, I want to erase the external FW drive, so I must be sure that I have the complete folder on the internal HD. I don't want iPhoto to be linked to the Library Folder on the FW.
    1) Should I trash the contents of the iPhoto Folder on the internal drive (which has no photos) and replace it with the contents of the iPhoto Folder on the external FW drive (the one from my original disk)?
    2) Should I simply replace the "Library6.iPhoto" on the internal HD with the "Library6.iPhoto" file on the FW?
    3) Must I use iPhoto Library Manager to move my old data?
    4) Would I have to use iPhoto dB Backup from Toad's Celler?
    5) When I commissioned the new internal HD, I used the option of transferring all my settings, preferences, etc. from the old computer (the contents of the damaged internal HD which I had copied to the external). Could this have corrupted anything in the iPhoto Library? Why do I have a "Library.iPhoto" file in the old iPhoto Library Folder and not in the new iPhoto Library Folder on the new internal HD?
    6) When I opened the original iPhoto Library from iPhoto application, my picture count was 2037. In that same folder, the total pictures were as follows:
    "Originals" Folder: 2149
    "Modified" Folder: 487
    "Recovered Photos" Folder: 37
    Why the discrepancy?
    Many thanks.
    iMac G4, 800 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I recommend you do number 1 from your list. Then open iPhoto with the option key so you can reselect the correct library folder on your new internal HD.
You shouldn't need to do any of the other things you mentioned.
As far as the numbers question 6, have you deleted photos without emptying the iPhoto trash? Try emptying the iPhoto trash and see if the numbers now match.

  • Satellite L300 - New hard disk drive info needed

I own a Satellite L300 and have to replace the hard disk drive. I am in Korea and went to the service center, but they only couldn't replace the disk drive because they only had them in Korean, so I have to go elsewhere to get one in English (that's what I think I was told anyway) I don't know a whole lot about computers, so I am looking for some help.
When I bought my computer it came with Vista pre installed, therefore I don't have an installation disk or anything like that. Because I am getting a new hard disk drive, will I also need to buy Vista and install it myself?

    Hello my friend
I am a little bit confused after reading your posting. HDD replacement is so simply and can be done by everyone and I don't understand how the service couldnt be able to do this. for this action you need 10 minutes and can be done without manuals or some maintenance manuals.
If you want to do this alone, please follow these steps:
    - turn notebook upside down
    - remove the battery
    - near the battery you will see HDD cover fixed with two screws
    - remove the screws and HDD cover
    - remove the HDD pack by pulling on the tab attached to the pack, following the direction of the arrows
    - place the HDD pack on a flat surface (such as a desk), and remove the two black flat head screws with black head screws
Please be careful with HDDs and do not apply pressure to the top or bottom of the drive.
    Vista OS
New Toshiba notebooks are delivered without installations disc but recovery image is saved on HDD. When you start notebook for the first time you will see Toshiba reminder with info that you must create such disc alone using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator. if you didn't create it and now the HDD is defective you have a problem. Either you must order new recovery media from Toshiba or you can use Microsoft installations disc to install Vista.
If Ive forgot something please let me know.

You can only sysc with one iTunes library. The new computer is a new library. You have to restore your iPod on the new conputer and then sync.
