Satellite L505D-S5992 croaked....help please...

Deployed Soldier in need of assistance. My 6 month old laptop went into hibernation, when I touched the power button it started to come on then just shut down (like it lost all power). When I tried to start it again it took me to the "start windows in safe mode" view.
I pressed enter to restart Windows, about the time the Windows 7 logo appeared on the screen it shut down in the same manner as before. I attempted this three more times with the same results. I would happily send it back to Toshiba but it was a work for trade deal and I have no proof of purchase, it was never registered and Toshiba already told me no.
I have gone through multiple forums and believe that the problem is the motherboard. Just looking for some assistance in confirming this before I purchase a new one. Also, when I plug the AC power cord in the LED does not illuminate showing it is plugged in. I have disassembled the laptop in hopes to find something that looks out of order but nothing, any tips or assistance on what to look for would be helpful.
Thanks

  • Linux on Satellite L505D-S5992

Does anyone know how to get linux (preferrably Linux Mint 7 or 8....however, any linux would be great at this point) onto a toshiba satellite L505D-S5992 Laptop?  I have tried booting from a cd and usb.....it will boot after a verrrrrry long time with a usb....but nothing works (mouse, keyboard, etc....).  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank You in advance.

Absolutely no problems running any recent version of Linux on my Toshiba.  Every version that was released since 2009 has worked like a charm and has detected every piece of hardware on it.  But then I have an INTEL based laptop instead of an AMD based one.  That makes a LOT of difference.  It has nothing to do with Toshiba, only with what chipsets you have on your laptop.

  • Having a few issues with my Satellite M105-S3004. Help please!

1)Ok I've had my laptop for about 3 1/2 years. For a few weeks now everytime I turn on my computer I get this message:
    RegSvr32
loadlibrary ("C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\dubstefu.dll") failed-The specified module could not be found
2)I also have been trying to re-install the sims3 and when I put the disc in sometimes it will read and sometimes it won't. When it does begin to install it stops and gives me one of two messages:
    Feature transfer error-I/O device error
    or
    Data error-cyclic redundancy check
Music CDs play, DVDs play, other games work, and the disc works in other computers.
Please Please Please respond if you have any idea what I need to do to fix this. I'm very good at following instructions.

    1) I don't recognize what's trying to load. You can track it down this way. Open the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe), uncheck all the items on the Startup tab, and reboot. If the message does not appear, then one of the items we have stopped is the culprit. It's a matter of rechecking half the items, rebooting, and so forth.
More (probably too much) about that utility here.

You can safely ignore the nag message. Check it's Don't show box.
    2) Since you get a CRC error only on this drive, it's probably just slightly misaligned for that particular disc. You should be able to solve it by copying this disc to another blank using the drive in question.
Let's see what the folks over here have to say. You should tell them you have Windows XP.

  • No Audio or USB Ports after Recovery on Satellite L505D-S5983

I have recently done a system recovery with disks I created when I originally got my Satellite L505D-S5983. Which put the laptop back to an "out of the box" state...supposedly... I have been asking on a Microsoft forum for help with my problems, with limited luck.... It is still not working. I'm pasting my original posts here hoping that maybe somebody on here can help me.
    POST 1:
My Toshiba Satellite L505D is running 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. After about 4 months of downtime I recently started it back up. There were roughly 37 updates to install when I turned it on, as expected. The updates were downloaded and installed, but when the system was restarted the system froze as soon as the desktop loaded. I booted multiple times and every time it completely freezes immediately after start up. I am not even able to open the task manager (ctrl+alt+del). They system boots perfectly fine in safe mode, and I ran what diagnostics I could find and nothing shows up....according to Windows everything is fine.
After Going through this multiple times, I got sick of it and decided to do a system recovery. Not a system RESTORE...it was a system RECOVERY. The HDD was completely wiped, and the system was supposedly returned to its original form as it was out of the box. Getting my hopes up as it finished its process... The system worked fine through the initial setup (language, time, etc.) and then as soon as the desktop loaded it froze again!
So here I am with a completely wiped HDD (except for the factory toshiba software), and a Windows OS that will only work in safe mode... I would like to avoid reinstalling Windows, I don't have any disks or anything. So any help would be appreciated
P.S. let me elaborate on what I mean by "froze". The system is completely non-responsive. No cursor movement at all, touchpad, keyboard, USB ports, nothing. When I did the restore the cursor, touchpad and keyboard worked through the initial settings only. Even when the desktop is loading i get movement for a second or two before everything freezes.
    REPLY I RECIEVED:
    Hi,
Since the computer is working in safe mode, I would suggest you to start the computer in clean boot to check which third party program is causing the issue. To configure your computer to clean boot follow the link
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 7 in the article to boot to normal startup.
If the issue does not persist in clean boot then refer ‘Step 3’, ‘step 4’ and ‘step 5’ from the following link to narrow done the issue and find out which service or startup item is causing the issue.
MY RESPONSE POSTING MY CURRENT ISSUE:
Thank you, and yes that's exactly what it was. It turned out to be an ATI program for my AMD graphics card that was not installed properly. It makes me wonder if I had to do the recovery in the first place lol.
However now I have a whole other issue. Windows is now telling me that "No audio output device is installed".....
In device manager the yellow "!" is there (High Definition Audio Controller), it tells me that it is not working....yet it says that the best drivers are installed! So yeah...I have no audio now. The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?

First run SFC /scannow and checkdisk (chkdsk) as the cause of these issues might

Also update or re-install the driver.
Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High
Definition Audio (that is an example and yours may have an entirely different name/maker).
Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version.
Now Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers.
Then RIGHT CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on
and RUN AS ADMIN (This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.
NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the
reboot to see if the version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot
until it is. It can take several tries depending on how many rollbacks it does.
Then do same for Device Maker's site.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

Ok...so I have installed all of the appropriate drivers that I thought I may need from this website. I have tried ALL of those system analysis programs that were suggested. Every one of them lists my mobo simply as a Toshiba motherboard, with no audio card information. Which I'm assuming that is because it has an internal sound processor. My problem is that none of the properties, or ANYTHING I try, will give me information on what I need to fix this...
I would be more than willing to run the recovery again if I knew that I had everything I actually need... When I created my original recovery disks it created a third disk with "apps and drivers". I installed all of them...and still here I am... And I haven't even STARTED on my USB port issue yet...those don't work either, and they don't even show up in my Device Manager...sigh...
And please, a response that doesn't look like an automated response to try and sell software like the last one I recieved from the Microsoft forum would be appreciated
Thank you for your time, and apologies for the lengthy post, but I wanted to provide as much info as possible.

    Satellite L505D-S5983
I would try another restore of the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. Maybe something went wrong in the process. Make sure everything works before applying any updates and adding any hardware or software.
Then add things carefully, rebooting Windows and testing the USB and audio at each step.
    Please note this.
The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?

  • Satellite L505D - Problem with sleep mode in Win 7

It's me again, in last thread :
    "Hello Friends,
I have a great problem after Windows 7 updated itself. I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite L505D. When I close the lid, it should automatically go to the sleep mode. Unfortunately, only the screen is black and the laptop is still running, I have to shut it down then switch on again. Is it a problem with the 'battery driver'?Please, help me :)"
The sleep mode worked perfeclty for couple of days and it is again gone.. What is more when I try to enter the sleep mode I can't do anything on the notebook , it is still running on blank screen and the processors' fan is working on high speed. During these last days, when the sleep mode worked, windows didn't update itself..
I don't know what is happening.. :) Weird problem, isn't it?

It is not easy to say why this happen. In your last posting you wrote about some windows updates. Who knows what is wrong there.
If nothing helps, not even system restore and you want to use stand-by mode I recommend you to back-up all your data and install OS again using recovery mode.
With factory settings everything will be OK again but then be careful with updates.

  • Satellite L505D-LS5006 Toshiba Laptop will not start up

I own a Satellite L505D-LS5006 laptop from Toshiba. A few days ago, I attempted to start the computer up, but when I pushed the power button, it would look and sound like it is turning on, but wouldn't. The cooling fan runs and the disk I have in the drive spins but nothing appears on the monitor and the computer's amber colored light signaling something is loading does not light or blink. The wireless networking light also blinks and then stays off. When I called Toshiba's help line, the guy told me to remove the battery and press the power button for 10 seconds, replace the battery, and try it again. When that didn't work, he said to try it again but with only having the AC adapter plugged in, after that, both the battery and the AC adapter plugged in. None of that worked. I'm sure nothings wrong with the hard drive since I was working on it offline the very night before when I placed it on hibernation mode and then placed the computer back in it's bag. I also know I need to replace  the battery in it as the computer PC Health Monitor told me I have a "Poor" battery. Please help me with this situation, there are important things I have on this computer that I need.

I'm not a tech support agent, but it sure seems to me that it's time to arrange a repair. If you want to recover data first, you could try removing your hard drive and connecting it another PC before repairing the laptop.

  • Re: Unable to use the recovery partition on Satellite L505D

    Hello.
I am trying to help a friend with their Satellite L505D that had a serious virus issue(s). I was not able to run/install any programs with the virus on it. I used a Microsoft tool to remove the rootkit trojan, but I still had virus issues. I also lost most of the programs on the machine. All the folders were empty (except for some games), so I could not access any tools that way. I could not get the machine to load any Toshiba restore utility by pressing Zero while powering on. I accessed some recovery options using F8 during bootup, and had a link to restore to Toshiba's original setting, but clicking that choice did nothing other than pause for a few seconds. I waited several minutes, clicked it again, rebooted and tried again. Nothing. As a side note, once during all this, the restore partition was visible from explorer.exe. Not before, or since.
So I then Reformated the computer with a Win7 Home Premium 64bit upgrade disk (leaving the restore partition intact), and entered the key for the system. Supprise supprise, it is asking me to activate within 3 days.
My basic question is, can I access that recovery partition in a different manner to attempt to use it? IE copy it's contents, or boot to some comand prompt to log to e:?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

    > Is a recovery disk from another computer using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit usable?
Generally speaking yes BUT this second notebook must be 100% identical with same model number (PAxxxx).
    > Or if not, am I left with either ordering recovery media from Toshiba, or wiping the entire HDD and installing another licensed version of Win7?
Exactly. To be honest better option is to order original Toshiba recovery disc.
You can order it under https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
For 30 euro you will have original disc that you can use anytime you want. This disc has OS with valid licence, all necessary drivers.
It is also simplest way to have all properly installed. With 5 mouse clicks and after 2 hours only notebook will have factory settings again.

  • Satellite l505d-gs6000 hard drive failure?

    hello,
am working on a computer for a friend. we both have the toshiba satellite l505d-gs6000.
he says he was on google and started to suffer a malware attack and shut off the computer. the computer will no longer boot.
trying to boot the computer will yield a message that there is no bootable device.
upon entering bios, the hdd is not listed and is just blank.
so i really don't think that the hdd is bad, but im not sure how to confirm that besides switching the hdd between the two computers.
will flashing the bios help me at all here?
    any input is appreciated.
    thanks

If the BIOS isn't even seeing the hard drive, there's a physical problem with either the notebook or the HDD. This might sound simple, but have you tried reseating the HDD? Maybe it just came loose. If that doesn't help, I'd say the easiest thing to do is to try it in another computer and/or try another HDD in your notebook.

  • Optical drive help please

I have a Satellite E205.  Can somebody PLEASE tell me how to keep the optical drive turned on?  It turns itself off when I run the computer on battery and the only way to turn it back on is to wait for the computer to ask me if I want to turn the optical drive back on, and that is completely random.  Geek Squad and Toshiba tech support have been unable to help me.  I'd sure appreciate it if someone could help me out here.

  • Satellite L505D-S5983 - CD/DVD-ROM issue

    Hello.
I have a Windows 7 Home Edition laptop that will not boot from the CD-DVD-ROM drive. Under normal circumstances, I know that if the boot order is right, the computer should automatically boot from the CD. However, it instead refuses to acknowledge any bootable disks I have in there at all. I have tried from Super Fdisk bootable CD to Linux Mint 9 Live boot CD version i386. My computer seems to just skip over the CD_ROM entirely and immediately boot from the hard drive.
However, it can still read CDs and DVDs perfectly. I have no problem burning items on a CD or pulling items off. I also have no problem playing games or movies that require a CD or DVD.
    Solutions I have attempted:
Changing the boot order. Nothing changed.
    Creating new CDs. Nothing Changed.
Gently cleaning the drive. Nothing changed.
Pressing the left and right arrow keys during the POST. Though it did throw me into the screen in which I choose what I want to boot, my only option was Windows 7 in the end.
Checking the Device Manager. My drive is working perfectly according to my computer.
Changing drivers. Updating wasn't possible as I already had the latest drivers, rolling back wasn't an option because there wasn't anything to roll back to, and disabling and enabling changed nothing.
Is there anything else I can do? I'm trying not to buy a new drive, as I'm short on money. I'll do it if I have to, but if I don't have to...
Thanks for any help or advice.

  • Satellite L505D-S5965 got shutdown, hibernate and sleep problem after Windows 7 upgrade

I bought my Satellite L505D-S5965 last August. Everything worked fine on Vista. Last month I upgraded it to Windows 7 (Home premium, build 7600), then it started having problem to shutdown, hibernate and sleep. Half of the time, it will shutdown, hibernate or sleep just fine, however, the other half of the time it just never turns off.
For shutdown, it will go to the shutdown screen for 10 minutes until the a blue screen comes up, telling something about windows experience a crash and dumping memory, then it restarts itself.
For hibernation and sleep, it will go to the normal black screen but the hard disk light never turns off (i.e. the hardisk would keep running forever).
It will be a big help if someone can help me with that, I just don't want to keep doing the "hard turn off".

Hey thats great posting and detailed, thank you! :)
Im wondering how you found it out.
But I want to add something: Before you do or change something in Windows registry, make a backup of it. In worst case you restore the old Windows registry. Just to be sure ;)
