Satellite L640 hangs at boot screen

Hi all,
I have an L640/01H which I bought at the beginning of this year. Besides the original Windows 7 OS, I installed a Linux system on a separate partition.
Earlier today I was using the Linux (which is what I normally use) and everything was really slow.
Eventually I force-shut-down using the power button.
Now, I've noticed an issue with the BIOS on this laptop - if I attempt to boot up when there is a USB flash drive plugged in, the boot screen just hangs. Today when I rebooted I realized that I had left a flash drive in, so I took it out and tried to boot again, a couple of times. Each time the computer would just hang indefinitely on the boot splash screen.
Eventually I gave it enough time and it got to the Linux boot selection menu, then I tried to boot my usual kernel but it gave me some message about a bad MBR.
I kept trying to boot but the boot process is stuck, what happens is as follows:
*The three lights on the left (power, battery and on light) come on, no problem
* The HDD light flashes white for a couple of seconds, then goes off. Occasionally it flashes again.
* Meanwhile the screen is just stuck on the boot splash screen. If I try to press f2, f12 or any key too many times it will start emitting beeps every time I press it. There's no way to get into the BIOS settings.
I also cannot boot from CD (Windows recovery CD or Linux liveCDs). Eventually some sort of time-out comes into effect and the computer restarts itself to begin the process all over again. Yay!
I tried the "unplug power cord, remove battery, hold down power button, plug back in, try to start" trick but nothing changed. I also tried switching memory slots (only one RAM chip, so I can't try an elimination process on the RAM).
Finally, I also opened up the HDD compartment and removed the HDD, then tried to boot. This time the BIOS responded, if only to tell me that there was no suitable boot media. At this point the BIOS was responsive and I could change settings in it, but I still couldn't boot from CD.
I was thinking of trying to reset the CMOS battery but I'm worried I'll damage something/make the problem worse. Does anyone have any ideas? I know the thing is still under warranty, but service centres are often slow and I don't want to lose hard drive data.
Any help would really be appreciated.

It could be a problem with CD/DVD drive what do you think about this idea?
Possibly the BIOS cannot recognize the CD/DVD drive properly and therefore there is a problem booting up from the bootable disk.
Additionally it could be possible that the HDD malfunctions and therefore you have received error message concerning MBR (master boot record) .
Remove the CD/DVD drive and try to install the Windows booting from USB flash drive.
_Regarding the CMOS battery:_
I would not recommend to disassemble the notebook because you could damage other parts and additionally you have to know that the CMOS battery is not removable its soldered on mobo

  • Random hanging at boot screen?

My system K8T800 Neo & 3200+ was working fine now sometimes the pc just hangs on the first boot screen and can take about 3 or 4 restarts to get it to boot, my initial thoughts are PSU, its an enermax 465W, ive tried changing HDD's three different types of ram unplugging all ide and pci devices and not required. I will have to get the voltages from my psu but whats the best way of finding these out, in the Bios screen? Bios 1.2

If it is disk try it on cable select.  If you have another 80 wire cable try that, it not impossible a wire is broken (quite common, and causes intermittent failure), apart from that !

Will try and unplug all ide cables as I use SATA for main boot drive. Thanks

  • Satellite A300 hangs on login screen - "Preparing your system"

    I have a computer that is a Statelite A300.
I have recently formated my computer because it kept frezzing.
I reinstalled using the toshiba recovery patition.
Once i start the computer i login and then it screen comes up saying.
+Preparing your system. This might take a few minutes. The system may restart automaticaly... Please wait.+
So i wait and wait and wait. nothing happenes just more and more restarts.
Also i am about to format using recovery dics's i created in safe mode a while ago.
Anyone got any tips. please do hesitake to asked questions.

OK i had the same thing happen, and this is seriously F*CKED
    fix this f*cking sh*t toshiba!
the 'please wait prepairing' screen keeps stealing focus, but in the background there is some g*y f*cked norton software
waiting for you to press next or i agree
so here is how you get by it, and u gotta be fast
grab (click and drag) that f*cked up 'please wait prepairing' window, drag it down so your mouse pointer is about 1cm below the next button you need to press
then when you let go of the mouse button, you have about a 1/4 of a second when the screen lets go of focus and you can quickly sneak in a click on next/or i agree or whatever f*cking sh*t is hanging in the background
u gotta do this alot, prolly easier just to take it back...

  • HP Mini110-1192EO will not get passed F9/F10 boot screen

This problem relates to an HP MINI110-1192EO purchased in Sweden little over a year ago and is therefore out of store warranty.
    1) The HDD crashed and has been replaced.
    2) Installation by recovery from HP Partition is thuis impossible and installing Windows 7 Starter from install media fails.
    3) Windows XP Retail install fails with BSD (Blue Screean of D.)
    4) Installing Linux Ubuntu 11.04 LTS 32 bit worked, then failed on language install hanging on boot screen as described above AGAIN.
    5) Replaced and checked disk, and now I cannot select F9 to boot from CD/DVD or USB
    6) Nor can I select F10 to enter bios.
    7) Unplugged battery to CMOS / BIOS and reset the whole thing. Got the time reset and now it still hangs on boot screen showing F9/F10 all the time without the 5 sec. timer ever coming up.
Had to unplugg battery pack and run ONLY on main power cord to be able to get this far even.
Before this it only showed the HP circular logo and not even F9 / F10 option.
So is this now nothing more than a piece of gloryfied plastic sinker or is there a recovery for the machine at all in sight?

Its a hardware issue, possibly memory but may be a bad motherboard.

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

  • Hanging on blue screen during boot (but Safe Mode OK)

Strange stuff with my iMac G5 -- machine boots normally, gets through Apple icon and spinning spiral, then hangs on blue screen and stays there. Mouse cursor moves but that's it.
Safe boot works normally, all safe-mode functions good. But need network, other services back.
History: Spent most of past week downloading huge, multi-gig file. It eventually downloaded successfully, but during process my wife put computer to sleep a couple of nights without halting download.
Didn't have adverse effect first time, but it froze Finder second and third times, necessitating reboots. Also killed wireless connections for all PCs in network those two times iMac needed reboot, had to reboot gateway as well.
Morning after download finished (Friday), iMac failed to wake up from sleep, wouldn't boot normally, had to go into Safe mode.
Additional RAM was recently installed, but has worked well. Safe mode shows full two gigs in use.
    Solutions I've tried, without success:
-- Trashing network preferences in both user and system
-- Re-installing Finder and NetworkInterface apps using Pacifist
-- Removing recently installed extensions in System (extensions put back after that failed to resolve issue)
-- Removing recently installed Startup items (again, put back after that failed to resolve issue)
Clearly it's got something to do with the network interface, but I've tried everything I know how to do. Any ideas? I'm out of them.
    Thanks in advance.

The Airport card is not removable in this model -- 2nd rev G5 iMac, with automatic light sensor.
    But -- I think I've found what's wrong. Unfortunately there's no easy fix ...
It's most likely the bad-capacitor issue that plagued the 1st rev of G5 iMacs. (This particular machine was a refurb bought direct from Apple in the fall of 2005, so it's possible bad caps were put on during the refurbishing.)
I first heard about the problem a couple of days ago but figured a hardware diagnostic test would catch it. More online research reveals that the hardware test doesn't.
When I popped the case this morning to yank the new RAM, there were definitely a few capacitors that had domed tops. Nothing spilling out anywhere, which was what I was looking for, but I've since found out that even contained bulging is a sign of failure. The capacitors should be instead perfectly flat-topped.
So ... I'm gonna call Apple tomorrow morning and see how much it would cost to replace the mobo. There have been reports in forums that Apple sometimes offers to do it for free, even in cases occurring within the few months.
See this link for examples of Apple picking up the tab for complete mobo replacement: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090314071508354
If that offer isn't made, I will look into having the capacitors replaced. This is at the edge of my own technical abilities so I will first ask my techie friends if they can do it for $100 or so, plus parts ... and if not I'm gonna try to do it myself.
This guy shows you how and sells inexpensive parts to do it with: http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
There is also a guy out in Missouri who replaces bad capacitors on motherboards for a living: http://www.badcaps.net/ Looks as if he'll charge between $80-120 including shipping and parts. So I may go that route.
In any case it turns out Apple did know about this issue back in 2005 and even instituted a program to fix iMacs that had problems stemming from it for free. (Dell Optiplex machines also had the same problem, which was traced back to a few Taiwanese manufacturers.)
Unfortunately there was no recall (Apple would never have lived that down) nor was the issue highly publicized. You had to wait until your own machine acted up, and then the free-repair program expired at the end of 2008.
I myself never knew about it until a few days ago, and I usually keep up on this stuff -- which is something I will make very clear when I'm on the phone with Apple tomorrow.

  • Mac Mini hangs on boot with grey Screen. No response to Keyboard

    Hello,
yesterday my Mac Mini (C2Duo, fifth generation unibody) startet to behave strangely. First thing was that it was not responding to the mouse(connected throught the keyboard)
I replaced the mouse and everything seemed to be ok.
I then did the latest update available on Mountain Lion and went home.
When I came back this morning, the Mac Mini hang with grey screen. I restarted. Again grey screen.
    Chime comes. Then nothing.
Tried everything from http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570 but nothing worked. The Mac Mini does not seem to be responding
to any keyboard command to enter safe mode, select boot device etc. No firmware password has been set.
Any help/ suggestions would be appreciated.
    Yours,
    Andreas

Have you reset the SMC, then held down the mouse button while restarting to get the CD out?
    Reset SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • ThinkPad hangs on boot - stuck at Lenovo boot screen

I'm experiencing random boot issues with a brank new thinkpad yoga 20CD0038PB win 8.1 pro. Once the system stalls on the boot screen the fn light stays on and I cannot even access bios. Powering down and keeping power button pressed for several second doesn't help either, However If I leave the computer powered down for and hour or longer it usually boots like nothing happened. Then the issue comes back intermittently with a restart or sometimes a preceeding blue screen.
Sometimes when the issue occures it also reports hdd0 error, and lenovo sent me a new hdd which I replaced that this has not fixed the issue.
I have the latest BIOS GQET29WW 1.09. I've run memory and disk tests using Lenovo Solution Center and memory tests in bios and they were ok.
On the BIOS download page I've found references to some issues regarding boot hangs with earlier versions of bios (1.7).
At this point I'm stuck. Anyone experiencing similar issues?

I am also experiencing this problem Like the OP, it seems random and has occured from day one.
    Boots to Lenovo Screen
    Fails to show spinning circle
    F1 light stays on
Nothing further happens (longest I have left it for is ~ 5 min).
If I hold the power button down for several seconds, I can switch the machine off. Usually waiting 30-60 seconds and re-starting is sufficient for a normal boot and start up. On occassion, I have to go through the shut down cycle twice before I can successfully start the computer.
Unlike the OP, I have not seen any error messages, or blue screen.

  • Z77a-gd65 hangs on bios screen and also doesn't boot

    i7 3770k
    MSI GTX 670
    2x8GB 1300 memory.
I cannot get into the bios.  If I hook the monitor to the gtx 670, I can get it to display the msi bios screen "temperature, boot device priority" but that's it.  There's no data, no temperature, just like it put the bios image up and then hung.
Right after hitting the cmos button, I get the following:
    E7751 IMS  v10.5 4/27/2012
    i7 3770k 3.5ghz
    16gb ddr 1333 dual channel
It doesn't seem to let me hit "f1 to setup" or "f2 to continue" with a ps2 keyboard.
If I boot from the cd to try and install winki, there's some info that flashes too fast to see but its to the choice of install, and then whatever option I choose, it will display a clear screen with the logo and eventually the screen goes black with a blinking cursor.
If I boot from a usb linux drive I have, it again goes through the boot choices, and then the screen goes black a few seconds in.  Doing this I think I got the mainboard leds to display "ff"  otherwise they display either "00" or "ad" or "ae".
The monitor is apple monitor through an adc to dvi adapter.  I've used this for years on an ati radeon on a p4 windows setup so it shouldn't be a problem but...  if I hook the monitor directly to the mainboard onboard video, the bios screen graphics stop hanging open, the screen just immediately goes black.
I've tried clearing the bios with the button, switching the multibios, and jumpering the cmos with the power off.
I have not tried flashing the bios, I was thinking about doing that through winki but it won't load.
    Thanks.

I tried just one stick of ram in a different slot but no difference.
And as in my first post I tried the onboard a bit but it was about the same.  Actually I forgot what I tried, I just now tried the apple cinema display to the onboard video card and unpowered the gtx 670 without taking it off the board and the display doesn't come on at all.
I think that was what it was last time I tried the onboard, that I thought it might be something about the adc-dvi converter.  But it works besides.
Why would it be able to get to the boot choice screen but not the bios though?  The PSU has a 7 year warranty, its probably decent, manual says 62.4a +12v .8a -12v
One other thing, if this matters.  The first two blue lights are always on on the motherboard, the voltage indicators or whatever, but when it tries to load winki, the other blue lights blink.  And right now, with the monitor on the onboard, all the lights are on.  But the monitor isn't.
Also, do you need a mouse plugged in, that probably wouldn't make a difference, I think I've tried that as well.

  • Satellite a215-s5818 Laptop stucks on boot screen!

Hey Guys, this is my first time here so....
Today i´ve listened some musics on my laptop, and then i´ve turned it off, and now at the night i´ve turned it on, but it stucks on that boot screen that shows the toshiba´s logo!!
    What can i do???
I´m really worried, i don´t have money to buy a new one...

    Try this:
    Turn off the laptop.
    Unplug the charger.
    Remove the battery.
Hold down power button to drain flea power.
Replace battery, then plug in charger.
Turn on the computer then hold down F2.
Load BIOS defaults by pressing F9 then selecting Yes.
Then F10 to save the changes.
If that still does not work,
    Shut down your computer,
Turn laptop on and hold down F8 until you get to the Advanced Boot Option screen.
    Select Repair your computer.
Click next on recovery options then login using your account.
Select Startup repair. If startup repair fails, Try System restore next time.
If that still fails, System recovery is your next step.

  • Satellite A300-1MV slow boot up and slow running

I have recently bought an Satellite A300-1MV it runs vista,
I have the trial Mcafee running and the other pre-installed software that came on the laptop. My problem is that on boot up the computer seems to take a ridiculous amount of time to boot up, once past the vista orb it says please wait which lasts about a minute untill the password request appears.
I had a look in the problemreports in control panel and found that the toshiba tempro program was hanging on boot up so disabled it but didn't seem to have any effect, I also find that when for example you double click on a photo thumbnail to view it, it takes about 30 seconds to appear on the full screen allthough the window is shown on the start menu bar at the bottom allmost straight away.
I have defragged the hard drive, scandisk, memory checked, virus checked etc.. I compared it to a friends laptop dell that has less memory but same spec processor and vista and that appears to work 10 times faster.. any ideas?, I do wonder if its a toshiba program causing the problem.
I do though have a problem with acrobat reader opening of its own accord and telling me it can't read the file ( don't know what file)
I have uninstalled this and reinstalled but still have the same issue!...HELP!!!
    Cheers

  • Satellite M45 refuses to boot at all

Greetings! My Satellite M45 seems to be quite sick! It all started a while ago as the battery slowly died, and eventually, the laptop would refuse to go to the BIOS on the battery's power.
I ordered a new battery (which I am still waiting for) and continued to use the laptop on external power, but every now and then, it would refuse to boot on external power.
On pressing the power button, the "TOSHIBA on touch with tomorrow" screen comes up - albeit with a problem - then hangs (with the fan on). The problem (other than hanging) is that the screen is "displaced" to the left. Instead of filling the whole screen, the boot screen "ignores" the rightmost 2 inches and the bottom half inch, and is displayed in the remainder of the screen. Its a bit hard to explain...
This morning, its refusing to boot at all!
Any ideas? I've tried reseating the ram, powering on without battery, only on battery, I have removed all "extras", and am at quite a loss now!
I can't get to the bios menu either - so its highly frustrating!
    Any help would be great!
    Michele

I feel your pain. Saturday morning I awoke, came into my home office, sat down and pushed the on switch and the light around the switch came on, then 3 seconds later went off. Nothing!
I tried again and again, with battery, without, with power cord without. I called tech support, they had me repeat everything I had already done. My M45-S269 is now sitting across town at the authorized repair facility. Where it will presumably be repaired for only $95.00 per hour labor, plus parts. I imagine I'll loose the 1200 songs I have in iTunes and the several hundred photos from the past year. Best of luck to you.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro diagonal lines on boot screen

My Macbook Pro has developed this strage issue. The boot screen has distorted diagonal lines all over it, and it will hang on this boot screen.
Sometimes I can get it to boot by starting in safe mode (it will still give me the distorted diagonal lines) it will then go through it's process and then go to sleep (only if the power cable is not attached). Then I will hold down the power button to turn it off, and then turn it on again, at which point it boots up normally. That said, this doesn't work every time, and is a 30min process with each attempt.
Has anyone else ever seen this issue before?
    MBP-2010, i5-2.53, Lion

Unfortunately this is becoming an ongoing known problem:
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/05/13/apple-remains-mum-as-complaints-mount- over-2011-macbook-pro-gpu-failures
If it's a reball problem I might have a solution but I just sent in a MBA with a Southbridge chip problem. The guy's rebelling it so we'll see how that works out.
Shades of the iBook GPU reball problem!

  • Satellite C660 fails to boot first time

    I have a Satellite C660 - PSC0AQ-03C019 + 1B194392K
For the last year the notebook has been running fine however in the last 2 months it has had a boot issue. The first attempted boot of the day, it will not boot, it powers on gets past the boot screens past the blinking cursor top left then stalls with a blank screen (not cursor just a faint glow).
Pressing and holding the power button turning it off and then turning on again the computer will start. sometimes (not always ) it will ask to boot normally or repair.
The notebook works perfectly in use not errors not crashes. Restarting the notebook works as expected shutting down and powering on after 5 mins works fine.
If the notebook is left off for an hour it or more it will not boot the same as above. powering off and powering on the system will boot but with start normally question.
There are no errors shown in system logs
I have performed a full system reinstall from HDD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD on to a brand new hard drive recovery.
    I have replaced the ram
I have attempted to update the bios but get an error
    Bios version above 200
    Battery capacity more than 10%
    AC is attached

Thanks for your suggestions. Just to clarify what is happening and what I have done so far.
Every time the Satellite C660 notebook is turned on when it has been sitting turned off for more than an hour it will not boot.
    Power on goes like this
The Toshiba splash screen comes up
The blinking cursor on the top left appears then disappears
The screen goes blank (noticeably on still, but blank)
No matter how long it is left it stays at this screen
    The above has happens so
I press and hold the power button to turn it off
Press to turn the notebook back on - one out of three times it states the system failed to start - offering boot to safe mode or turn on normally
Pressing boot normally the computer will boot successfully
The Satellite C660 will run perfectly with no errors, failures or crashes
Reboot the Satellite C660 it will restart and boot correctly
Turn the notebook off and leave it for an hour and it will not boot.
I have scanned the original HDD and it has no errors or issues
I have performed a full system reinstall using manufacturers HDD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD on to a brand new hard drive recovery.
I have tested the brand new HDD no errors
I have replaced the RAM memory
There are no errors shown in system logs
I have set the BIOS to defaults
I have set the boot order to boot from HDD first
I have not been able to update the BIOS as when the Toshiba update or manual download and attempt to update the BIOS fails.
On a restart the computer boots as normal
When booting for the first time of the day or if the computer is off for an hour or more it will not boot into Windows

  • Satellite L505-13W shows Blue screen error

My laptop SATELLITE L505-13W Shows blue screen error.
The os gets booted up and after some time it shows a blue screen error and restarts.
On restart it asks for repair, even after succesfull repair it showed the same error.
So i tried to recover using the recovery cd but it proved to be a tragedy.
It eraced my full HDD to stone age and smiled at me saying recovery is not possible.
    please help me.......

    Hi
If the notebook cannot be recovered using the recovery disk, then all this smells like hardware problem.
Are you sure that your recovery disk is OK?
Did you try to install the OS using other installation disk?
Maybe this would be useful to check if the issue might be related to the faulty recovery disk but if the BSOD (blue screen of death) appeared before the OS installation, then I would say the issue might be caused by internal hardware malfunction
It would be necessary to check the RAM modules and the HDD.
HDD can be checked using the HDD diagnostic software like Drive Fitness Test (freeware)
RAM could be checked using a tools like memtest but you need a running systemso in this case you cannot check the RAM using a software I recommend removing one module and testing the notebook using one module in each slot
