Satellite L655-11J - Hard disk activity all the time

Toshiba please I need help
The first run of my laptop I entered my location my name and a password, I install Toshiba updates and Windows 7 updates (the notifications I got) then I noticed the hard drive is active all the time and the laptop is very slow. I tried a lot to restore the original Toshiba image the built in the laptop and I finally did it thinking maybe I did something wrong
The hard disk drive still always active (don't know what reading or writing) no monitoring for any activity the laptop very slow and lot of seeking sounds.
any solution please, I got this problem the first use of it :(

I know it has a guarantee and they will replace it for free, but it was a gift from Saudi Arabia, I'm now in Syria :( I've to wait until on of my relative go back there :D
I went to Toshiba in Syria they charge my 7 $ to tell me the hard is defective although I knew it was so, and I will need to pay 100$ for a replacement so I will wait ;)
thanks all, it was my mistake, it is just I noticed the HDD light always on in windows 7 and it was not on in USB Linux so I thought it was a system problem, I didn't have much time to work on it and make tests :D
I'm sorry again

• Time Capsule Hard Drive Sleeps All The Time!

Hi All,
does anyone know whether it is possible to change the settings on the time capsule which decide after what period of time to sleep the HD? At the moment it seems very short, this basically means the hard drive is having to spin up from stationary almost every time I use it. Some applications don't like the 2-3 second delay in getting a response from the filesystem. I'd rather it go to sleep after 10-mins of inactvity. i think it's set to seconds at the moment. probably is not great for the HD either.

vadalus wrote:
yes, i know all those things. i was asking whether this could be changed.
no, you can't change this setting.
But the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule is enclosed in a very small case: it's better to have it in the idle state every time it's possible.

• How to keep the save-button active all the time?

Hi!
I'm using mobile sales 4.0.
On a tile i've only fixed questions and combo boxes with yes and no ...
When i write manually a "yes" in the combo box field the save button is active - When i use the combo box with a mouse click the save-button isn't active.
What are the settings i've to do to keep the save-button active all the time?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Best regards,
Ingo

Hi Ingo,
If your combobox is a bound control, then when you change a value in it, the save button should be enabled. Strange. But anyway, you can do this.
In the combobox_OnValueChanged2 event, make a call to makeDirty method in the tile:
If boundAttributeChanged Then
anchorthatyourcombotiedto.bo.MakeDirty True
End If
This will make the Save button enabled.
Regards, Vadim.

• Make audio (optical) port active all the time

Well, as my topic says... Is there anyway to make the optical audio port active all the time while I have the connector inserted?
My issue is that it shuts down when I don't play any music/video on my MBP and my reciever doesn't recive a signal, in that way it makes a humming sound...
Very annoying.
Any idea?

Hello MrDanne,
No, you cannot make the optical audio port active 'all the time' for when your Mac is shutdown, this includes the all internal electrical circuits (besides your power unit) thus the port cannot be active.
The humming sound is known as distortion, this occurs because there is an un-avoidable interference caused by particles when there is no signal communicated through the cable.
When you shut down your MBP, you should also turn off the receiver.

• Time Machine Disk spinning all the time?

Day 3 of my TC. Love it, so far. Curious, though...my disk seems to be spinning all the time. Is this normal? Even when computer is in sleep?

Mine is warm-hot to the touch. I can leave my hand on it without discomfort. A RadioShack IR thermometer measures the warmest point on the top at 120 degrees. There is a fan inside which is on at all times. The fan is fairly quiet. I can only hear it when my Mac is shut down. (A dual G5 is CLEARLY louder than the Time Capsule...) The hard drive goes to sleep quickly. If I try to access the hard drive, I can barely hear it spinning up to speed. There's about a 5-10 second delay before the finder window opens. I assume this is how it is supposed to be? Does anyone know how the Time Capsule is supposed to behave? There aren't really any references yet... The genius at my local Apple store just started using one and doesn't yet have an understanding of its normal behavior.

• Fan activated all the time...

Hi,
I'm just updated the lastest Leapard update...after that, the Fan (coolant) started activate all the time...no matter when i turn on my MacBook...the fan automatically spin and non-stop..for that..caused my battery usesage...
What's happening?is it the bugs of MacBook?

I sort of have the same problem - the CPU get really hot and starts to make a lot of fan noise.
I downloaded iCyclone to control the speed and temp, and I noticed that only one of my fans were running (Fan1) (are there even two fans?) and the right side got cold while the left side kept being hot. - Does anyone know if there should only be one?
Anyways iCyclone helped speed down the fan and make (the right side of) the CPU cool down - and lot faster than usual...

• Do I have to change my hard drive cable all the time on my MBP 2010

My MBP 2010 not reading my new HD, This is because of a faulty HD ribbon cable, my ? is will I have to always change this cable all the time, I have read read other post on this issue.

No it was not damaged that i know it was working fine until I had the HD failure. I first bought a WD HD Scorpio and that HD was damaged then i went to Bestbuy and bought a Seagate momentus 350gb Hd, it works fine externally, but when I get it connected internally my MBP does not read it.From reading these post I see that the cable tends to go bad, I am just hoping that I only have replace it one time I use MBP for college.

• How do I fix my internal hard drive stalling all the time??

Hello,
I have a few hard drives attached to my G5.
2 external and one additional internal.
My issue is with my internal drive. It's a 750 GB drive.
if ever I return to my computer after being away for more than 15 minutes, every time I try to access something on that drive...meaning, I cause it to wake up. It stalls and I get the spinning beach ball forever. till most time I have to force shut down my computer.
So if I happen to be working in any softwares I use and try to open a file in that software that is on that drive ....it stalls. If i'm in my finder and happen to have a window open, 3-4 folders deep into that drive. when I click on a file in that window ....it stalls.
the only time it doesn't, is if I'm in finder and close all the windows and THEN click on that internal hard drives icon then it opens normally.
So it's ONLY when I try to wake the drive up does it stall. never have any issues when I'm just working away normally.
this is my second drive and had something like this going on with the previous drive too. when I was running. OS X 10.2-10.4
so I'm pretty sure it's not the drives that are faulty
Is this a known issue? are there any fixes??
if anyone can help that would be great thank you

Not a solution, but something to try.
In the Energy Saver preference window, do you have the "Put the hard disk....possible." checked or unchecked?
Try it the opposite of what you have selected now.
Also, do you have the same problem if the energy saver is moved to Never?

• Strange HDD behavior, activity all the time?

Hi,
I just reinstalled arch on my tp x23 on a new seagate momentus hard drive. The installation went fine and I must say I'm very pleased with the performance so far.. except for the fact that the hard drive is almost constantly doing something and I have no idea what it is? The activity led turns off only to turn back on in a while.
Any ideas?

Hmm now that you mention power saving features.. I wonder if it's the hard drive going in "sleep mode" when theres little/no activity and the HDD LED lights up during spin down and spin up.. Maybe check the BIOS and disable the hard drive powerdown crap or change the timeframe.. if it works then you know where the problem lies..
then again you are on a laptop so I'm not sure the solution outweighs the LED problem (as spinning down the hard drive will help prolong your battery life)
It sure seems to be something like that. I also fount this thread which is (was) discussing the issue, but didn't really find a solution. Anyway, I know now what the probable cause is and if I want to change the behavior one day, I know how to do it. So a lesson learned, great!
About the battery, I actually don't even have one at the moment, so I'm always AC-powered. But I think I'll get back to this one once I get a new battery and have a chance to test different settings. What I don't understand is that my system seems to run cooler now the power saving is turned off or at least as cool without the fan blowing all of my papers off the table Maybe it's a bug in the hd's firmware, don't know? It seems like the heads won't park properly and keep on going on and off.. That would explain the constantly lit activity led.

• Must I leave the back up hard drive on all the time?

I'm just moving up to the new iMac. When I use time machine must I leave the backup hard drive on continuously, or can I turn it on and back up incrementally?
Suggestions will be appreciated

After your first backup, all Time Machine backups are incremental.
To protect you best, leave the drive on and connected with Time Machine turned on at all times; Time Machine will do an incremental backup hourly. Backing-up less often will save very little space on your TM drive, and very little CPU.
External drives are built to run 24/7, but if you use the drive only for Time Machine, it will probably spend most of it's time sleeping.

• Hard drive runs all the time after software update

After a software update from Apple a couple of weeks ago, for some reason the hard drive now runs noisily and continuously ever since. It's never run that way in the 3 years I've had the machine. It would run briefly sometimes while using some websites, but it would always stop and quiet down once the site was done. Anybody else had this happen? Thanks - L Agnew.

Hi,
Make sure you have enough available drive space for updates. Right click your MacintoshHD icon and then click Get Info. In the Get Info window, where it says: General click the black arrow so it faces down. You will see Capacity and Available. Watch that the available drive space never falls below 15% of the total drive. (Some say 10%, but that's pushing it). Not enough drive space will cause apps to crash and freeze, including browsers.
If drive space is the issue, you need to copy files to external source. Don't forget to delete the originals on the hard disk.
If drive space isn't an issue try deleting this file. com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Launch Software Update either from the Apple Menu or the System Preferences/Software Update pane.

• Step input key commands active all the time - really annoying

In Logic X, I'm experiencing a problem where the step input key commands are overriding the global key commands, even when the step input window is not open.
For example, when I'm looking at the main Logic window, with the step input window closed:
-I press the space bar, and the playhead advances one division value
-I press the T to change the tool, and it creates a region and puts a tiny F# there (!!)
-I press Y to open/close the library, and it creates a region and puts a G# there.
The only way around it right now is to edit my key commands and delete all step input commands that are getting in the way of the more universal ones.
Has anyone else encountered this?

Yes, I am.
Actually, I haven't even really been using the step window. The problem seemed to start out of nowhere, and I noticed by looking through the "Edit key commands" window (opt-K), that what Logic was doing was using all the step input key commands instead of the global commands.

• Why is my hard drive running all the time in Mountain Lion

My hard drive is powering up far more than it ever did with Lion, and this of course is killing battery power rapidly. Any one know why my hard drive runs so often on the new OS?
Thanks!

Great. Thanks. What I mean is my hard drive actually revs up and makes noise far more often than it ever did on Lion. It is actively engaged in a higher usage than ever before and this of course makes the battery quickly expire.
Would anyone else like to offer advice? Thanks!

• Windows copied files to partition, now Disk Error all the time...

Hi all,
I have installed Windows XP SP2 before (using this disk) on a Mac using Boot Camp but this is refusing to read the files Windows Installer placed on the BootCamp partition, so it can't finish the installation. Merged it back, did the whole thing again for the same result.
"Disk Error
Press any key to restart"
of course pressing keys does nothing, I have to hold the power button in for 5 seconds to shut down. I can still boot up as a Mac, just the Windows side refuses to install.

Any ideas anyone?
with best regards,
Karn.

Just tried for the 4th time, and I had to use the long winded FAT 32 format in the Windows Installer and success! The Quick version was what I used before I'm sure, but it didn't work tonight...
Working now anyway...
