Satellite L850 - external 1080p display problems

I had been running my Satellite L850 laptop via HDMI to an external monitor without problem for many months.
A couple of weeks ago I attempted to update the catalyst driver and have had problems ever since.
Basically now when I select 1080p mode via the catalyst control panel it makes the screen flash and have vertical lines.
Occasionally it will work for a short period, even up to an entire day and than it will randomly start again. I can play a game in 1080p mode and it will be totally random, sometimes allowing me to play for hours without having the black screen flashes whilst other times it will flash constantly and the only way to resolve is to either restart or pull out the HDMI cable and plug back in and cross your fingers you have enough time to reopen catalyst and change to 720P which is always stable.
I have tried:
1. Using the AMD Catalyst removal tool and reinstalling via the original factory default Toshiba catalyst drivers
2. Using System Restore to go back before I made the changes
3. Using the AMD Catalyst removal tool and updating to the newest version via AMD website.
4. Reinstalling my chipset drivers along with #1
5. Tried a different monitor (still happens)
On a side note every time I use the removal tool it removes my USB drivers also and I have to reinstall.
The current graphics driver is AMD Radeon HD 7670M and I have also tried the solution on the tech support forum here http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/item/781.
I have run out of options other than a complete format and reinstall which I want to avoid if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Probably your problem has nothing to do with the picture issue mentioned in the technical document posted by MisterX.
I could read in your first post above, that this issue appeared exactly after the driver update.
> A couple of weeks ago I attempted to update the catalyst driver and have had problems ever since.
Are you 100% sure that the display driver update has caused this problem?
You have also mentioned that this issue does not appear always but sporadically and every once in a while.
From my point of few there are some open questions:
1) Is it really an graphic card driver problem or maybe an GPU issue?
If the issue did not appear in the past (before the GPU driver update) then yes: it could be related to the driver.
2) The notebook support also an Intel HD graphic card (its part of the Intel CPU)
I think you should check if the same issue would appear using the Intel GPU.
Try to uninstall the AMD driver (from device manager as well as from programs & features are within the control panel) and test it using Intel GPU only.
3) Last but not least test the notebooks video output with fresh recovered notebook. After the recovery the graphic card driver should be the same which you have used before the update.

  • Blurred fonts on external 1080p display

I have Samsung S24C650PL 1080p (connected with HDMI), which I bought one year ago. I used it a lot with Windows without any issues. Two weeks ago I bought my first Macbook Pro Retina 13 with Yosemite and since than it is a pain to use the external display.
All fonts are significantly more blurred than with Windows. It very unpleasant.
Especially scanned PDFs are horrible, very difficult to read, much worse than the rest of the system.
What is, however, really weird, if I move the Preview app with the PDF from the internal display to the external, it shows the right and sharp image for cca one second before it becomes blurred. So it is obviously software-related issue.
What I tried to fix it:
Deactivate "Use LCD font smoothing when available" --> no effect at all
Deactivate "Smooth text and line art" --> no effect
Use any possible settings in "Displays" --> no effect
Call the Apple support and talk with them for 40+ minutes --> no effect and no help
As last hope, I tried "Force RGB mode in Mac OS X to fix the picture quality of an external monitor" (see http://www.ireckon.net/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-os-x-to-fix-the-picture-qua lity-of-an-external-monitor) --> no effect
What is even more weird, if I use Parallels with Windows, it is okay! Even in the a window and not in fullscreen, the Windows show everything just as they should - crisp and sharp lines and fonts, while the background in OS X is blurred.
The unique "workaround" I found is related to PDFs and their readability.
Installation of Acrobat Adobe, which uses obviously a different rendering engine than Preview app. (However, I don`t like the app.)
Installation Foxit Reader for Windows under Wine (even that is much better than Preview app.), however, it has its own issues.
However, I don`t have any workaround for the rest of the system... and I just don`t know what to do...
I would appreciate any help. I do like hardware from my new MBPr, but I am pretty frustrated from bugs of this kind...

I'm not sure if my problem is related, but I'm also connecting my MacBook to a Dell LCD panel via the mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter and I'm getting weird on-screen artifacts and intermittent flickering.
There's a known problem if you're using the mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter and Apple has provided a firmware update to fix the problem. If you're using that (and connecting to your Dell monitor via an additional VGA-to-DVI dongle, then you might want to grab the update.
But as far as I know, there doesn't seem to be a solution for the DVI adapter.

  • External Cinema Display Problem

    Hi,
so I have my new MacBook connected to an "old" 20" Cinema Display using the MiniDisplay port and a MiniDisplay to DVI adapter. It has been working just fine since I connected it a couple of days ago.
I have the MacBook lid closed and I am using just the external display at home.
Today I left my room for an hour or so. After coming back and waking the computer from sleep I was horrified seeing my display full of weird artifacts, randomly displayed blue and pink pixels. On top of that the display was turning off and on (going black) every couple of seconds.
    I don't know if it's a problem with:
    a) the MacBook
    b) the display
    c) the connection (adapter?)
Any ideas? Anyone experienced a similar issue?
    Best greetings,
    Tomasz

I talked to Apple tech support today. After initial description of the problem and basic troubleshooting, I was referred to a product specialist. She had me do an SMC reset (shut down, disconnect power cord and all external devices, remove batter, hold power button for 10 seconds, reinstall battery, connect power and start) which seemed to clear up the problem. But it returned later in the day. I called them back and was immediately sent to the product specialist again. The next step is to take it to the Apple Store to have it looked at there. I won't be able to do that for at least another 10 days, so there won't be any more progress on this problem until then.
When I talked to tech support, they had no information on any such problem in their database, which means they haven't heard it from anyone but me. So if you're having this problem, please call tech support and tell them about it. If they start getting lots of reports, then it starts to look like a real problem and not just one guy who might be doing any number of things to make this happen. Apple tech support has been very good those very few times I have had to talk to them. If you are referred to a product specialist, you might have to wait 10 minutes, but it's worth the wait. You're talking to people you can understand who can answer your questions - they're not reading off of a script. You get a case number so that if you have to call back, you can pick up where you left off - you're not stuck explaining everything all over again.

  • Satellite L850: Cannot change display brightness in Ubuntu 12.10

Screen backlight brightness doesn't change in ubuntu 12.10

    Hi Alex
Does your unit have Intel-only graphics or does it have AMD or Nvidia graphics too?
    Intel only should definitely work.
However, since Toshiba has rearranged the hotkeys, and even changed how the work along with the FN-key, you may need to experiment a bit to find the proper keys / combos.
If your unit has a non-intel video, please try a live version of a distribution with a later kernel than Ubuntu.
    Maybe Fedora or Chakra.
Both use very late kernels and drivers may be more recent, supporting more hardware.
Preferably, use a live version so you don't need to change your installed system.

  • External display problems with snow leopard

I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my Macbook and it's created lots of problems with my LCD external display:
    - The display won't work at its native resolution (1680x1050) - it will flash up an image for 1/10 of second and then go black. I can only get it to work at a lower resolution, which looks AWFUL.
    - If I try to start up my Macbook with the lid closed and the display connected, the display won't work at all (it jams on the start up screen). It only works if I keep both of them running
I never had these problems when using Leopard. I've searched lots of forums and found that many people are having similar problems with external displays. Apple still haven't fixed the bug after repeated efforts from people to get if fixed.
Here are some threads (now closed) on this if you're looking for solutions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132912&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136455&tstart=1
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132837&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084332
    Common suggested fixes are:
    - Force OS X to use LCD font smoothing (does not work for me)
    - Clear the PRAM on start-up (does not work for me)
    - Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist (does not work)
    - Change energy management setting to high performance (only works on graphics cards in Macbook 15" and 17").
From reading these forums it appears that this is a well-know bug. Has anyone else got any suggestions to fix this? And why hasn't Apple fixed this yet after so many people bringing it to their attention? It's clearly a bug that wasn't in Leopard.

I'M FED UP WITH APPLE! They've always been a little shady, but the last half of 2010 took the cake!
First it was the iPhone 3g "upgrade" to IOS4 which was garbage and killed my ability to use the 3g until I figured out how to crack the software, wipe the thing clear then reinstall the original software. Next up was purchasing the iphone 4 as a Christmas gift for someone running tiger on their mac, only to find out that the iphone 4 doesn't work on tiger when they tried to sync their contacts - and then having to rush out and purchase snow leopard so that they could enjoy my gift. Then I install Snow Leopard (note - I purchased the family pack) onto my own leopard-running(10.5.+) powerbook only to have the external LCD display I've been using for years suddenly stop working.
Oh, okay, to be fair, it works IF I RESIGN MYSELF TO SET it to "mirror image" (which defeats the purpose of having multiple displays) and drop the resolution down to a pathetic, unsharp, nearly distored setting that is almost painful to look at knowing that this monitor was just A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO showing me crystal clear images.
Then I exhaust myself trying to find a fix only to discover that APPLE in their infinite brilliance (AKA - their torture of loyal customers) knows of the issue - worked it out - then created an update that created the issue all over again. I'm so done! No more macs. I'm going back to the evil land of PCs. At least there, you know you're getting crap, it doesn't sneak up on you after getting you to trust it time and time again.

  • [X300 intel external display] Problem to display correctly 1600x1200px on external screen

    Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my external display on my X300 laptop...
    I have a X300 with WinXP, and a 20" 4/3 1600x1200 external display (Samsung 204B).
When I want to use my external display as an extended desktop, it didn't work well... First I configure my display as an extended ... into 1600x1200px resolution. As the ratio isn't 4/3 on the laptop, there is some border at the top and at the bottom of the external screen, consequenly there is an "lift" (when I go down the screen move down.. etc.). It's not very ..cool.
So there is an option into the graphic proprety to set the screen in "full screen : not keeping the proportions". But, in this case, my external screen display an ... triky ? There is still an "lift", but there is also two border on the right and the left of the screen, and the image quality isn't there. It's too deformed to can be read.
After some research it appear that my lenovo drivers do not match with the last intel one... But when I try to install the lenovo one ... It didn't work ! (hardware problem).
How can I get a working extended desktop into 1440x900 + 1600x1200 full screen !
Thanks for all, and sorry for my poor English...

  • Since 10.8.5 an external connected display has problems

    Hi there,
since my Update to 10.8.5 an external connected display via miniDisplayport to HDMI (or DVI) makes problems. If i turn on the display and the macbook (cold start), everything is working fine. But when i turn off the monitor or close the lid of the macbook and return later, he won't recognize the external display anymore. If i connect via HDMI, i have glitches all over the external display and then it turns black. If i connect via DVI, the external display stays black. Mac OS X doenst shows me an external connected display in the settings..
Does anyone else have this problem?
If i restart the Macbook, all is working fine again...

  • Satellite L850-1HR and Win7- unable to Install Display Driver

    Hello
I reinstalled my Toshiba Satellite L850 notebook with older Windows 7. I installed also all the drivers necessary. After I installed display driver in device manager under Display adapetrs I see message that adapter is not functioning properly because system is unable to load drivers.
On Win7 there is also SP1 installed. I cannot see why drivers are not loaded properly. Does anybody have any idea about what could be wrong ?
    Thanks, Mateja

    Hi
The Satellite L850-1HR is equipped with an ATI Radeon HD 7670M graphic chip
I assume the ATI driver is not installed properly.
On the Toshiba EU driver page especially in Satellite L850 PSKG8E download area I could not find the Win 7 AT driver.
But I checked drivers available for all L850 series and I found AMD display drivers.
You should do this too. Choose Satellite L850 series (in short model no choose All) in the driver download form and you will get all available drivers for Win 7 and Win 8
The AMD display drivers should be listed too.,.

  • Emac 1.42 ghz external display mirroring will it solve dark display problems ?

I have an emac 1.42 ghz and the display is getting dark I have the contrast turned all the way up and the contrast turned up one notch in the universal access. When the computer is shutdown sometimes when it starts back up it is very dark almost unusable until it warms up or is running for about 20 minutes. Then it is normal. If I use an external monitor on the mini vga port with an apple adapter will it have the same darkness/display problems. I really like this computer but if the external display wont fix the problem I will need to wipe the drive while I still have a useable display

I'd say it's likely to help using a different monitor.
I think you could possibly check by doing a Screen Capture, which I believe gets it frm the graphic card, then view that capture on aniher computer, or post it here for us to view.

  • Satellite L850 starts automatically opening display panel

    Hi everyone!
I have a problem with Toshiba System Settings program.
I have to start with a short explanation:
I have polish version of Win 8.1, upgraded from win 8.
I can't find the option that could make my Satellite L850 to don't turn on automatically after I raise it's cover.
    It's really annoying.
In the control panel (I suppose that's how it's called in english versions of windows) in the power management section there isn't such option.
There's only "choose the result of closing the cover" and i have there "shut the computer".
I have also the fast starting system option enabled.
In the BIOS "Panel Open - Power On" is DISABLED.
I remeber that there similliar option in Toshiba System Settings and before returning the system I solved this problem in that way. But there's a problem with access to Toshiba System Setting.
When I try to run it, I receive the notification "Prba sprawdzenia has?a administratora zako?czy?a si? niepowodzeniem", what means "The try to check the administrator password ends with failure" and there's only OK button.
Does anybody know how to fix the Toshiba System Settings? Reinstallation doesn't work.
Thank You for any idea and I'm sorry for my bad english. I'm not sure also if I wrote it in the right place. Didn't know which forum should I choose: Toshiba Tools & Utilities, like it's a problem with the System Settings or the forum associated to my notebook's model.

I guess you are talking about the Panel Open - Power On" feature
    https://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/FAQ1A037V0000R01.htm
You said that you upgraded the system from Win8 to Win 8.1.
Well, after such system upgrade its necessary to upgrade the Toshiba tools and utilities to Win 8.1 version too because the Win 8 software isnt fully compatible with the Win 8.1 system.
I guess the Toshiba software was not updated and this is the reason why the Toshiba System Settings program does not work properly.

    I've got a L850-1HT (PSKG8E) , I installed a fresh Win7 64bit, but I can't find any drivers that would work with my laptop version.
In the Toshiba drivers area for win7 iIcan only find drivers suitable for Intel graphics, no AMD drivers.

    Hi
Take a look into the drivers download area of Satellite L850 PSKDLE series.
There you can find the ATI / AMD display driver and these both series use the same graphic chip therefore this driver should work for PSKG8E series too.

  • 10.5.3: Clamshell mode and 1080p display issues fixed?

Has the clamshell mode issue and 1080p display issue been fixed in 10.5.3? Are you able to shut your laptop and use 1080p on an external monitor without the **** thing freaking out?

Me and hundreds like had the issue when we upgraded to 10.5.2. It is a known but bug that when you start up the system an external display wouldn't be recognized in calibrated profiles (only at 1440x900). A work around was to start up then close the door immediately or boot up without external display connected and connect when completed booted.
I was told by support in Jan that there would be a fix in the next release (10.5.3 I presumed), but after installing it I have the same problem and the release notes don't mention it as repaired.
