Satellite L855-10P - Sudden shutdown playing 3D games

Hello,
When trying to play 3D games, after more or less time playing, often less than 10 minutes, my Satellite will suddenly shutdown. Afterwards, it can't be booted up again before some time.
This sort of symptom is generally due to overheat, a common problem with Satellite laptop (and by the way, this is probably the last Toshiba I buy since they can't seem to get that fixed).
The usual solution is to remove dust from inside the laptop, for example with a gentle vacuum cleaner.
It is impossible to do correctly without opening (and voiding the warranty) since they didn't put an access to the fan and heatsink, put can help once in a while.
On this model however, the exhaust is block by a grid (part of the heat sink I suppose, which makes sense) and on the intake, the fan is blocked so that it can't turn in the opposite direction, meaning it is almost impossible to s*ck the dust. Result: almost impossible to remove dust. Well played.
So normally I would send my laptop back for "repair" (which is just opening the thing to remove the dust and maybe redo the thermal paste, but you can't do that yourself of course), but in this case I noticed it shutdown really quick.
I can leave it on a 2D game or old low quality 3D games (say Supreme Commander in low quality mode) for hours without problem, even in hot weather, but as soon as I try a newer game (for example Resident Evil 6, even in low quality) it shutdown pretty fast and without feeling so hot.
So I am wondering if maybe this time it would be a problem with the graphic card/driver. Let's say something like a command than crash the graphic card.
I have a AMD Radeon HD 7670M with the driver version 8.932.5.3000 (the only one available for this computer and Windows 7 64 bits on the Toshiba website).
Is there a know issue that could cause the graphic card to crash or overheat more than expected with this model?
(If you wonder why I didn't wrote s*ck in full letter, it is because the profanity filter on this forum don't think it is a word that can be used in normal conversation.)

>When trying to play 3D games, after more or less time playing, often less than 10 minutes, my Satellite will suddenly shutdown. Afterwards, it can't be booted up again before some time.
To me it sounds like a GPU has operated at full capacity and produced lot of warmness leading to high internal temperature.
In my eyes the unit shut down due to the high temperature.
The notebook supports a kind of hardware protection. The unit will shut down automatically to prevent the hardware from damage.
Dust and debris might be one of the reasons why the parts cannot be cooled down properly.
>This sort of symptom is generally due to overheat, a common problem with Satellite laptop
This sort of symptom happens to all notebooks worldwide because of air circulation.
>I can leave it on a 2D game or old low quality 3D games (say Supreme Commander in low quality mode) for hours without problem, even in hot weather, but as soon as I try a newer game (for example Resident Evil 6, even in low quality) it shutdown pretty fast and without feeling so hot
Running games on low quality does not stress the GPU a lot and this lead to low heat dissipation and low temperature.
>Is there a know issue that could cause the graphic card to crash or overheat more than expected with this model?
I dont think so mostly such issues can be resolved by changing the settings within the windows power options (decreasing the CPU/GPU performance, change of cooling method) and of course within the game settings (low details, etc)

Can anyone please offer some advice?
(Sorry for the posting but I tried to edit my post and some how lost everything but the Opening question)
I'll try again. My wife bought this laptop approx. 1 year ago. Our ISP is Virgin supply is cable the laptop runs Windows 7. The router used was a TP Link TL-WR740N 2.4 GHz signal. the connection has been unreliable. We installed inSder3 which indicated that the 2.4GHz band was often very congested her reception was often both overlapping and co-channel but we don't recall it to have been broken. When she lost the internet the only solution was to switch everything off and re-boot everything.
InSSIder3 indicated no signals on the 5GHz band. The laptop supplier was adamant that 'the laptop would pick up the 5GHz signal in the same way it had picked up the 2.4GHz signal'.
Yesterday the router was professionally changed for an Asus RT-N66U Gigabit Router Dual Band. The laptop does not identify the 5GHz signal but it's there the installer's smart phone adjacent to the laptop recognises it.
I am old and decrepit but the Manual indicates that the laptop is compatible with 'Frequency channel selection of 5GHz for IEEE 802.11a or/and IEEE802.11n. I took this to be corroboration of the suppliers claim. But now it seems that Toshiba say that the wireless card in this machine should allow the use of the 5GHz frequency but cannot always guarantee the compatibility of 3rd party 5GHz router networks.
Any suggestions? +But please remember my lack of ability+.

    Hi
As far as I know the Satellite L855-10P was equipped with Atheros WB225 802.11bgn Wlan card.
The Wlan 802.11 standards operates at different frequencies
    So for example:
    802.11 a supports 5Ghz
    802.11 b supports 2.4Ghz
    802.11 g supports 2.4Ghz
802.11 n supports 2.4Ghz and optional 5Ghz but only if the same chip would support 802.11 a standard.
In your case the Wlan chip supports the 802.11bgn without the a standard and therefore I guess 5Ghz isnt supported by the chip

  • Toshiba Satellite C655 SP4168M freezes while playing a game

So i've been having problems with mi laptop very recently with a game i'm playing (League of legends), the game normally works perfectly, but at random times it just completely freezes (making an awkward sttutering sound) and i have to forcefully shutdown and restart the PC. It doesnt happen ALL the time, but when it happens it's really annoying, and i can either happen once every week, or several times daily. I already repaired the video driver but that didnt help, i was thinking about updating the BIOS; but cant find the correct version for my laptop, and i cant even be sure that's actually the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

try using a program like "Piriform Speccy" (free version), and monitor the CPU temps as you are using the system.  If it gets up into the orange and red while watching videos, you may need to apply fresh thermal paste to the CPU.
My old L355 is starting to freeze while watching youtube videos the other day, and just confirmed that the CPU is overheating.  Will be tearing it apart hopefully tonight to be cleaned up and have a fresh application of arctic silver on the CPU.

  • Satellite A500-19W - Suddenly restarts during games

    Hello Guys,
I recently got a new Satellite A500-19W, but while playing games it suddenly restarts.
Any idea what might be causing this and how to solve it.
    Thanks,

    Hi Malek_1,
This happened also to me on Satellite A300. The reason was because my notebook was overheating and so I decided to clean it using compressed air spray. Its pretty easy because therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook and it blows out the dust from the cooling ventilators.
    Check this!!!
Furthermore in Windows Power Management you can choose between different cooling methods. I use Maximum Performance mode.

  • Satellite A500-17X restarts while playing games

    Hello all,
I have had my toshiba satellite a500-17x for about two years, I bought it to play Starcraft and world of warcraft. Ever since i got it i have had a problem with it. While playing games it would suddenly restart the laptop. I contacted the customer support and had it taken back to see if they could find out what was wrong with it. They said it was fine and it must be the games software that was causing the problem. (I do not believe that this is the problem since i reinstalled all software and the problem persisted)
I felt that they were trying to bluff me with this answer. Either they did not do an indebt inspection to try to resolve the problem or I believed that the model itself was flawed.
Anyway I wanted to say that the laptop can sometimes play fine for hours but on other days it will crash multiple times.
I just want to point out something; my graphics card driver is up to date. My air vents are completely clear. The temperature is stable. I have put the power management to maximum. I play with a battery in and the laptop is plugged in. This has also happened from a cold start.
During the restart i am given no advanced warning. The laptop just turns off (no beeps, no blue screen) and restarts.
I have never posted here before and i would really appreciate your help.
I know this has been a problem in the past with this model as i have searched forums for solutions but I cant find one.
If you know of a solution I would be very grateful.
    Thanks

    Hi
Gaming issues are always very difficult themes because nobody can say exactly if its caused by game <-> GPU driver compatibility problems or notebook (hardware) issues.
You said you had this issue playing two games but does it happens playing other games or running other applications (no games)???
In your case I recommend checking some gaming forums about StarCraft and WoW.
Maybe you will find some more details about that.
At the other hand the unit supports an NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M graphic chip.
Some people said that nVIdia driver 8.16.11.8973 would run stable

  • Satellite L850: Playing a Game - holding spacebar freezes cursor

Got my first Toshiba with my first Windows 8 experience so IDK.
But, I play some games where the spacebar its needed to play the game, holding spacebar and double clicking on a map it allows u to select whatever u want. With this Satellite L850-1P9 I cant do it, holding spacebar freezes the cursor.
    Any idea?
    Thks

    > the problem is in, or because Im using windows 8
So in such case you will need to use Win 7
    > or because notebook, cause the spacebar as the function of zoom + to.
Usually the notebook supports function buttons.
The space bar is one of such button which provides additional functionality.
Usually this happens if you press Fn + Space bar.
But you can also disable this function in BIOS (Advanced -> System Configuration)

  • Satellite A500-1DN - Crashing while playing games

    Hi all,
My friend bought a Toshiba satellite A500-1DN about 2 months ago. After around 2 weeks she decided to put 2 games on it (guildwars and jedi knight academy). We soon realized that after about 1 hour of gaming, the computer would crash to a black screen rather than going to a blue screen of death. This meant there was no hint of what was specifically causing the problem and no mini dumps from windows...
Having had troubles with those specific games myself on Windows 7, I thought it must be the games.
About a week later she spent around an hour looking through youtube videos only to find that her computer crashed in the same way as the game. So I put some diagnostic software on the computer. Processor / graphic card overheating? But nothing, the temperatures were stable and acceptable and certainly wouldnt have been the cause of these crashes, unless I unluckily missed the point where it did over heat shrugs so I didn't outrule it...
Due to the problem so far seeming to be video related, I downloaded new nvidia drivers (unfortunately the official ones didnt work and I had to hunt for a custom .inf). It didn't solve the problem but the driver seemed to be functioning suitably well.
So in our rage, we sent it back stating that it may be that the cooling for the laptop, ie copper pipes were not sufficient for the graphics card and Toshiba said they had cleaned the computer up replaced thermal paste, all that typical stuff... which seems very fair. We got it back. We played a game and it crashed within 10 minutes. Perhaps even worse than when it left.
Is there anything else that could be causing this problem - video related activites causing crash of computer without going to BSOD or returning any specific errors. What about RAM? I have even uninstalled the HDD protection thinking it might be causing some compatibility problems.
    I need some guidance.
    The spec is:
    Intel core 2 DUO CPU T6600 2.20GHz
    Nvidia Geforce GT 230M
    4GB RAM

    To the above commenter.
Thanks for bashing my response I appreciate I may not be the best computer person under the sun, however I do think my IT degree counts for something!
Also if you hadn't noticed the huge number of people complaining about this issue, if you haven't had the issue good for you, however for those of us that are still struggling you telling us to download patches and BIOs and what not that are completely none related to our issue I find to some what unhelpful.
As for playing with my laptop on my knee, It is also on top of cooling pad which lifts the fans well clear of any clogging.
And if the layout and design of the laptop isn't a problem how come there are so many issues regarding this problem? While I appreciate that you think you know what you are talking about regarding the N series laptops they also have far less RAM, usually don't have a dedicated graphics card and also have the same sized cooling system to cool a much smaller machine.
I have in fact had the pleasure of speaking with my representative who was very sympathetic with my issue and has currently applied to try a replacement and if I am still having an issue will give me either an equal or upgrade which is very kind of them.
This is not a cheap laptop and we should not be having the number of issues described by many owners.
I still believe that some of our computers are just "dud" computers and while the issue with some of them is Extreme like my own, some of you don't seem to have the issue.
There is no current fix for this issue and I would suggest taking it back to you local Toshiba service centre and discuss with them options as they are generally understanding if you are still having issues after the first few visits!
    Will keep you updated!

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

  • Satellite (Satego) P100 - Bug in Bios - Playing 3D-Games isn't possible !!!

    _Hello,_
i have a very Problem with my Toshiba Satego (=Satellite) P100-491 Notebook.
Unfortunatelly the Toshiba repair service installed the bios version 4.7, after that I can't play 3D Games without strong fps-drops ! It's the common problem with the satego P100 class.
*The newest bios, version 4.7, is failing again!*
So I'm looking after a newer version, but there i still no one.
*The Toshiba Service isn't able to solve this porblem !!! Perhaps they could give me an older bios without this bug, is this possible?*
    What should i do?????
(Is there anybody with an older version, for example 4.5, who could give it to me?)

Hi Ayce, i had EXACTLY the same problem, i'm guessing your using Vista.
The reason this being, is that the fan is not engaging when under extreme gpu loads (It's the GPU Fan.)
It's got NOTHING to do with the nVidia drivers, it's a bug in the bios when using Windows Vista.
I recommend installing the Toshiba Value Package for your Operating system,
I wouldn't recommend downflashing your bios UNLESS you know what you're doing.
To solve this problem, i had to downflash the bios to V4.2
You can easily find it on the web.

  • I have a 4g classic iPod.Suddenly almost all my games won't play and I get a message to go to the site but there is nothing there for me. Where are the games for my iPod and what has changed to make my games no longer Play?

Most of the games on my iPod classic 4g will not play anymore. I get a message that is of no help and when i synced the games they disappeared. What is going on and where have the games for iPods on iTunes gone ?

Apple removed the clickwheel games from the iTunes Store back in September.
Have you tried a hard reset of the iPod to see if that helps resolve the issue of not being able to play the games?  To do this, first make sure the Hold Switch is in the OFF position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Satellite L750 freezes playing some games

When I am playing "Gardens of Time" and other games.
After a while the cursor freezes and I have to restart the laptop.
The problem doesn't occur with general computing tasks such as e-mails etc.
I have made sure that the Laptop isn't over heating by using the unit on a hard surface with the vents clear.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Maybe the notebooks internal temperature is not too high in order to trigger a automatic shut down but the high temperature could affect the memory modules which cause the game freezing.
At the other hand the game would not run properly due to the old display driver but I think its more temperature related issue. The heat dissipation is much higher playing different games and this sets the temperature to a higher level.
Did you try to clean the cooling fans? You should definitely check this!
I clean the fans using compressed air spray.
Dust and debris could affect the air circulation and this one of the reasons why the temperature goes up

  • Satellite L750 - while playing a game or watch a movie sound card disables

    hi
i have a problem with my sound card. while i play a game or watch a movie, it stops. the only way to enable the sound again is to disable and enable the speakers. my laptop model is L750-1LC and i have downloades the conexant sound driver fom the site of Toshiba.
can anyone help me with my problem please.
    thanks

    >the second thing is that when i disable the other 5 hd driver, the sound works, but when i reboot my system, it installs the other 5 drivers by its self.
The driver should be uninstalled in device manager!
I did it the same on my notebook Tecra A11. But my notebook supports Realtek HD audio driver instead of Conexant.
However, something similar happened to me too. The sound did not appear from speakers but through the headphones. I had to plug-in the headphones to the headphone jack and then remove the headphones to get this issue solved.
But this was really annoying and I decided to update the Realtek driver.
I uninstalled the sound driver firstly from control panel -> Programs & features
Then I uninstalled (click on uninstall driver) the Intel High Definition driver and Realtek HD driver from device manager.
Then I downloaded the newest Realtek driver version and installed this driver.
After new reboot the unit recognized the Intel high definition controller but the sound worked and the issue did not appear again

  • Satellite L850-1V0 - Fan error popped up whilst I was playing a game

I recently got an error that popped up whilst I was playing a game, it said that the cooling fan had a problem and that I should shut it down immediatly and send it for service.
This is the first time I have had this, and I have a program called Speccy that tells me the temperature for my computer and all these other things, the temperature is at its normal level and I have never had anything saying to me I had a fan error before.
For safety I changed the battery from Balanced to ECO which dropped the temperature a little bit, I put my hand on the battery and it isn't even all that hot, I can hear the fan and I can feel something blowing out of the air vents.

Well, it looks like it was only false alarm.
Usually the notebook would shut down automatically in case of high temperature. This is kind of internal overheating protection.
Anyway I would recommend you to monitor the temperature level and to keep eye on the cooling fans.
Furthermore check if new BIOS is available. If new BIOS has been released, try the update.
