Satellite L875D-S7232 Hangs Up When Booting on Battery Power

Hello all... As I stated in another thread regarding Special Function Keys, my new Satellite L875D-S7232 has an issue that during boot-up of Windows 7 HP SP1 without the AC Adapter plugged into it, it will "hang up". After many hours of troubleshooting & even having it looked at from the retail tech that sold it to me, we have found no solution for this. I have also formatted the machine, partitioned the HD, & installed My version of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit SP1, along with updated ATI & Realtek drivers, along with only the updated driver software from Toshiba support website, & this issue still presists. This apparently isn't due to faulty written bloatware, & apparently due to an actual hardware issue. I am returning it to the retail outlet I purchased it from, in hopes they have a replacement machine of this model since I do like this platform at the price I got it. I will respond to this post to let ya know if the replacement was a success & the issue only pretained to this actual machine, which is what I am suspecting since I haven't seen any posts on this forum of a similiar issue. I did come across a port/thread (whatever ya call them) where a person had a different model, & his machine did exactly the reverse of mine, where his machine would hang up on the boot if the AC adapter was plugged in, but fine when running on battery. Myself & the retail tech even tried the solution they suggested of changing BIOS setting on the Processor cores... This solution was unsuccesful for my machine.

I hope it works fine after the exchange. Let us know how it goes.

  • Failure to boot on battery power

My MacBook Pro (5,5) is failing to boot unless connected with the AC cable (mag-safe) turned on.
from battery power (with fully charged battery) the machine beeps in the following sequence:
    3 fast beeps
    3 slow beeps
    3 fast beeps
    (that's NINE beeps in total)
the screen stays black the entire time.
the light on the front of the laptop is turned on, but the screen never activates.
if I hold down the power button for a few seconds the LED indicator (sleep light?)
turns off.  then I can connect the mag safe and boot successfully.
I have run the hardware diagnostic delivered on the installation CD and this
    discovers ZERO problems.
does anybody have experience with this error or know what is wrong?
    thanks in advance!

@capt fred:  those EFI restore images are extremely poorly documented and horribly indexed, aren't they?  8(
    not a single one mentions a macbookpro5,5 ...
anyway, I think I have figured out what has happened, now all I have to do is figure out how to remedy it...
(( achtung:  this would seem to be the user-story-from-**** ))
the macbookpro5,5 ( 13" ) was shut down and NOT connected to AC power.
a very distracted (and somewhat in a hurry) user (ie ME) picked up the laptop and
pushed the power button-- WHILE in that very instant being distracted by his daughter
wanting to know some piece of very important information (for a 10-year-old).  ALL THE WHILE
the distracted user (ME) kept holding down the power button while explaining to the
10-year-old-girl why the mice run away when you turn on the lights (which took some minutes).
Still holding the power button down the distracted user (ME) noticed that the macbookpro had
begun to emit a series of beeps.  It was at this point that the distracted user (ME) released
the power button and himself emitted a series of vocalizations that his 10-year-old-daughter is not
supposed to ever hear (EVAR).  from this point forward the macbookpro will NO LONGER BOOT
FROM BATTERY POWER, instead opting to only emit a series of beeps (3 short, 3 long, 3 short).
now... I understand that I have unwittingly (and un-willingly) informed my macbookpro that she is
to expect a firmware update via cd-rom.  however:  she does not accept any firmware update CD's
AND she will not boot if not connected to AC power.  so how do I get out of this catch-22 ?
please, apple gurus!  please please please make my expensive little toy work properly again!!
    thanks in advance,

  • IBook sometimes boots on battery power

I recently inherited an 800MHz iBook G3 that has been acting strangely. Its internal hard drive was shot (it made loud clicking noises) but I got it to boot off an external firewire HD. The machine works great when plugged in to AC power, but acts very strangely when on battery power. It wouldn't boot on battery power, but if the iBook was running I could unplug the adapter and sometimes the iBook would run for a while and then shut off and other times it would immediately shut off (the battery was 100% charged).
I replaced the internal HD, hoping somehow it would solve my problem, but it didn't. I have done some more experimenting and it seems if I have had the iBook plugged in to AC power for a while (like overnight), the ibook will boot on battery power and run anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute before powering completely down. After that, the machine is completely dead and I have to plug it in to AC power to get it to boot again. Also, when it reboots, the time is messed up. I get an error message that says "Your computer's clock is set to a date before March 24th 2001. This may cause some applications to behave erratically. Please use the ..."
I have reset the PRAM and PMU repeatedly, I have tried other batteries (and while none of them were new they worked in other ibooks) with the same result. I also tried my battery in another ibook and it booted and ran that ibook just fine. Something in my ibook just shuts it down. I get some sort of system halt call in the log file.
I'm at a loss... anybody have any ideas as to what could be wrong or what I can do to fix it? Thanks for the help.

    Hey JW.
    Well like SU says:
"It sounds like there is a bad connection between the battery and the computer. "
So what I have seen on these is a bent locking tab on the battery lock. I had a few in here like that. I could lift the iBook 1" when it was running on battery and if I dropped that small bit it would shut down. Bending the locking tab back solved the problem. Careful it's fragile.
Also like Rhonda says it could be a logic board problem.
I've seen the super capacitors on the G3s go bad. Typically it's a .22 Farads @ 5.5 VDC. What happens is that the cap blows up (probably due to over filling like in the classic cases of cap failure in the past). It's easy to see since the outer case gets peeled back.
If you're date and time is constantly messed up I'd suspect that. I've replaced those caps with ones I bought from Electronics Goldmine.
Since that cap holds settings on the PMU it would also affect power if there were small transients that could cause you problems. The super cap system is designed to hold settings for around 30 seconds while you change batteries but if that cap is dead it wouldn't hold settings for a millisecond.

  • Head scratcher--new HD, macbook won't boot on battery power

I needed a larger hard drive because the orig 60gb was getting full. replaced with a seagate 250gb. now, macbook will no longer boot on battery power. works fine if plugged in. if unplugged while running, macbook goes dead. battery is fully charged.
a puzzlement. any ideas, brain trust?
    ...joe

What is the model number of the HDD you bought?
Next, make sure you have the battery in all the way and that the HDD is securely installed. Then try a PRAM and SMC reset by shutting down, unplugging the magsafe, taking out the battery, and holding down the power button for at least five seconds. Next, put everything back and hold down commmand-option-p-r at startup until it chimes twice then let go.
If none of that works put in the old HDD and see what happens.

  • Peep sounds when working from battery power

    Hello
    I bought a new HP DV6-1340 laptop
I hear some strange peep sound from the notebook hardware when its working from battery power.
When working from outlet power there is no peep sound from the hardware.
Maybe its because the battery is new or something there wrong ?
    Thanks in advance for help

I solved it my self. It was OK (no buzz and fuzz) when it was plugged in (when the electicity line was down once and I was running on the UPS battery).....

  • Satellite M50D-A-10W does not boot after battery is fully empty

    I have a Toshiba Satellite Notebook latop Satellite M50d-A-10W AMD A, 15.6.
I have problem when the battery is fully discharged I need use the needle to peform hard reset using switch behind the laptop.... then I can get into boot mode with f2
How can I solve the problem?
    thank you

I guess you are talking about the force shutdown procedure as described in this document:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB3C03JR0000R01.htm
Such issue may appear in case the PC is freezing, not booting or has a power failure.
I think the notebook goes off in case the battery would be fully empty. In such case the system does not shut down properly.
As default state, the system does not shut down the notebook but usually the unit performs an hybrid shutdown. This procedure allows the notebook to boot much faster but this might affect system boot in case something would go wrong while shut down procedure.
You can disable this hybrid mode and in my opinion this is also recommended.
    Details:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03EY0002R01.htm
However, to avoid such issues its very important to perform the shut down procedure properly.

  • Satellite L635 freezes up when running on battery power

    Hi,
I've bought a Toshiba satellite L635 yesterday, and whenever I try to work on it for more than 5 minutes, the entire computer freezes up nad remains stuck.
After I turn it off and on again and run in safe mode, it works just fine.
When the computer is plugged in to the AC power, it works fine too.
I've tried to recover the OS and settings, but it still freezes up after about 5 minutes of work.
I've also tried to kill all the unnecessary processes, but it still freezed up on me.
    I will appreciate your help,
    Eli.

Hi,, The problem is on Power menagement, the system tries to extend battery life by reducing performance, so go to: ControlPanel > Power Options > Change Plan settings from here click -Change Advanced power Settings- then in - Processor Power Management - increase % of - Minimum Processor State in both Battery and Plugged in modes. I increased them to 15% and its helped to forget this problem. Also dont forget to update your BIOS from toshiba support, version of 2.2 availible. Wish this will help you

  • High CPU usage when running on battery power

    Hi all,
Since a a few weeks, my MBP mod A1278 with the i5 CPU, is extremely slow when not plugged in.
The Activity Monitor shows that a kernel_task is consuming 274% CPU and is using 64 threads.
As soon as I hookup the power adapter,  the kernel_task activity falls back to around 3% and everything is all good.
Anyone with a solution? Should I replace the battery?
BTW I completely reinstalled the MBP and I have a clean system.
    Thanks.
    Patries,

Click Apple icon on the Menubar.
From the dropdown click About This Mac.
    Click More Info.
From the popup window select System Report and click Power on the side bar.
It will show the health of the battery.
    Proceed from there.
    Best.

  • Hizzing / bad sound when running from battery power (Ups)?:

Why is my computer (Imac) emitting a hizzing sound when running from the UPS (battery)? I am testing a offline UPS type: POWERWARE Eaton Protection Station UPS 500VA 250W. My Imac is suppose to use max 200 watts of electrity (Imac 24 inch. intel 2.8 Ghz, 4 GB memory). When running from AC there is no sound. When testing (pulling out the cord on the UPS the Imac starts emitting a disturbing hizz / sound)???

I solved it my self. It was OK (no buzz and fuzz) when it was plugged in (when the electicity line was down once and I was running on the UPS battery).....

  • T410s won't boot on battery power

This is a relatively new problem (i.e. it didn't happen when I first got the laptop). If the computer is fully off, and I unplug it, I press the power button and nothing happens. When I plug it in, I can turn it on no problem. Sleep mode on/off is unaffected by this.
I sent it in for an RMA a while back and they said the battery didn't pass tests. They sent me a new one but I'm still having problems. Any ideas? Is it a setting somewhere I'm missing?

  • PowerBook crashes when running on battery power

Having problem with a 17" powerbook.
computer runs fine with AC plug in, but when running without AC, it will freeze or kernal panic when launch any application. Ran disk utility and everything seems to be fine, even with MacTestCD... everything passed (Memory and HDD all passed).
I did permission repair & diskwarrior... it still crashes without AC...

    MacTestCD? How old is that?
Never heard of MacTestCD. Who makes it? You should only use a utility made for the operating system in question. Otherwise kernel panics could happen if they attempt to repair things they don't understand.
    Is your data backed up?

  • When running on battery power, my MBP shuts down after 30 mins..please help

this has been happening for the last two weeks; whenever i run my MBP on battery, it goes blank/shuts down after about 30 mins...would start back on, but shut down even before the login screen comes! i checked the battery display under the laptop-it showed 3 green lights!! TIA!! i bought my MBP off the apple website last september!

With your symptoms, most likely, yes. If you have a 17" MBP, you are out of spec (based on Apple's specification of 80% health for 300 cycles). If you have a 15" MBP, you're in spec (84% health), but your symptoms indicate a problem (i.e. a defective battery). So, contact AppleCare!
You can't calibrate now. I asked because if a battery goes too long (150-220 cycles) without calibration, the "sudden loss of power" can result.
    Hope this helps...
Graham, that's why I inquired about calibration, but with the OP's cycle count, that's not the issue. Also, FYI the "battery condition" information is part of System Profiler with Leopard; the OP lists Tiger, and did post all the information available under Tiger.

  • Satellite M100 - Does a disabled firewire port saves battery power?

    Hey everybody
I do not need IEEE so..
If I disable firewire in device manager will it turn it off and will it help to save battery power?

    Hi Dmitrij
I doubt that disabled firewire port will help you to save battery power.
If you want to save the battery power you should check the Toshiba Power Saver settings and options.
    Check the HowTO document
+How to setup my computer for optimum battery usage?+
You can find it in Forums HowTo area.
If you are using the Vista then I recommend checking the Vista Power settings.
More details you will find in "HowTo" doc:

  • CD/DVD player not working (Toshiba Satellite L875d-S7232)

I purchased a  (Toshiba Satellite L875d-S7232) on August 17, 2012 from a major retailer. Recently, the CD/DVD player will not play, or even recognize, commercially produced DVD movies. As a consequence, I cannot rent or buy movie DVDs, nor will any of the DVDs in my library work now. The DVD player in this Satellite is TSST SN-208AB.
What happens is that when you put a movie DVD in the machine, the light goes on 4 times, but the DVD player never spins up and starts playing. In the explorer, the CD/DVD icon is there, but when you try to "open" the DVD player it never spins up and a green bar goes, very slowly, across the top of the window.
The player has no trouble with audio CDs.
I have spent about 10 hours on this problem now. What I have tried followed all of the standard "fixes" for this specific problem on this specific machine and the correct OS (Windows 7 Home Premium). None of the standard fixes fixed anything.
    In Brief :
    1. I uninstalled all programs which use the DVD player, except for the standard suite that came with the computer at time of purchase. Also, uninstalled all CODEC packages that were not part of the original suite.
    2. Uninstalled the CD/DVD device and driver, as instructed, and the device and driver were automatically reinstalled. Did a full power cycle (including removal of the battery). I've done this solution about 4 times.
    3. Looked in the registry for a possible filter driver issue. There was none.
    4. Used Microsoft "Fix It" program, which discovered "a problem" but had no description of the problem or a reference to a fix.
    5. Ran the device driver update check, toshiba service station check, microsoft update check. All files are up to date and the correct file.
    6. Ran system files check, HDD corruption check. No problems reported.
Nothing done so far has moderated or altered the behavior in any way. Moreover, I have noted dozens and dozens of people on the internet in different forums with the same problem. What this means is that Toshiba is losing market share bigtime on this one.
    Any fix would be appreciated.

Hi Sense no one has replied, I will offer my 2 cents. DVD drives wear out and they also get dirty. You could try to clean it with compressed air. DVD drives are fairly cheap and very easy to replace.
    Dokie!!

  • Compatible processors for my L875D-S7232 laptop??

Can anyone tell me what processors are compatible with my current laptop and motherboard?  I am thinking of doing an upgrade and would like to know what my best options are.
    I have a Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7232 laptop
A8-4500M processor (1.9GHz, 4-core CPU using 35W of power in the FS1 socket)
Any help is appreciated!  Thank you!

I have not seen any where that sells the A series mobile processors.  Two things I did to help speed up my computer was to upgrade to 12 gig of ram and to replace my C drive with a 240 gig SSD.  I also upgraded to Win 8 Pro which I've found to be a bit snappier than Win 7.
