Satellite L955-S5370 Slow to Open Applications
Ever since it was first powered on, not quite 2 years ago, my Satellite L955-S5370 has been very slow to open applications. By this I mean: When I double click on the application shortcut for any program or any control panel, there is a pause of a few seconds, then the item's icon appears in the Windows taskbar for a few seconds, then finally the program or control panel itself opens.
I thought that with some careful maintenance, like reducing unnecessary background processes or regular defragmenting, that I could solve this problem. However, nothing I tried succeeded in reducing the time needed to open a program or control panel.
This laptop has been factory re-installed twice - but there was no improvement in the time needed to open programs and control panels.
I thought perhaps that laptops just aren't as responsive as desktops. However, I have tried laptops on display in stores and they operate quickly, even with less powerful hardware than my laptop.
Is this particular model - L955-S5370 - known to be slow? Is there anything I can try to make it respond more quickly?
Or did Toshiba simply make underperforming laptops in 2012?

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 by following the directions in the article you posted.
Perhaps I should have mentioned that I already tried unchecking things from the System Configuration Utility. I actually used Autoruns, which is more comprehensive. No change.
For the record, I long ago got rid of virtually everything that Toshiba put into Windows startup. Now, only three items run at Windows startup:
1. the Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) driver, without which my computer would run even slower;
2. the Intel graphics driver; and
3. the Realtek sound driver, without which I'm stuck with Windows' own driver.
All drivers are the most recent.
The low hanging fruit were picked long ago. Remember I said my laptop behaved this way out-of-the-box (it was actually slower then than it is now.) Whatever is causing this is part of Toshiba's build.

What is the hard drive capacity, and how much space remains available on it? Things can slow down if the hard drive is getting full. It is generally recommended to keep at least 15% of the total capacity of the hard drive free as available space.
How long has it been since you performed any hard drive maintenance? (i.e., repaired the hard drive using Disk Utility from the Mac OS X 10.5 Install disc?) -
N70 slow in opening applications
wonder if anyone can help in this,had few issues with n70 being slow when opening different applications like messages,ect ect. tokk phone to carephonewarehouse as they authorised nokia repair center, they updated software to fix software freezing problems, but i have just reloaded n70 backup from pc that i made before taking it into service center,and it now seems a little slow again after reloading backup, only difference i can see is that symantec software has been reloaded and running and downloaded ringtone has been reloaded too, the phone is from o2 and is now running v 5.0616.2.0.3 24-04-06 RM-84, can anyone help me or have i buggered it up and need to get it reloaded again by service center
Try uninstalling things and reinstalling them?
If you've still got the backup, try restoring to factory settings, then restoring the backup again. If you think it's the backup itself that's not working, restore to factory settings and load everything back on manually and see if any one thing makes it slower.
If all else fails, try the service centre again.

Mac os x 10.6 - still too slow in opening applications
I would like to know why launching application time under mac os x is much slower than in windows XP or vista; in some cases it is frustrating as for example for opening Pages or Keynote applications. Even if under os x 10.6 application launch times are too long.
It seems that some major optimizations could be done by Apple SW eng. in order to improve these tasks and to give more reactivity
I don't want to speak about opening 2008 word or excel that something not presentable. In some cases, for opening word or excel, occur 10 secI've also noticed that Snow Leopard would appear to be much slower at launching applications BUT I seem to have cracked it on my iMac and hope the same will work for you.
I basically did two main things:
1. I went into system pref. and removed any/all unnecessary login items under my user account (Such as Real Player or Hp helper etc.)
2. Using a free utility called OnyX (link below) I repaired disk permissions, cleared cache files, verified the hard disk etc - basically executed most of the tasks relating to system performance through the OnyX interface. Of course it's up to you as to which options you tick/untick depending on what you feel is appropriate to you and how you use your computer.
After doing the above, my system, which was an 'upgrade' install from Leopard to Snow Leopard, is considerably faster and opening applications is very snappy now.
Hope this helps as it's a slightly better option than some mentioned above.

N70 Slow to open applications etc...
Hi, can anyone tell me why the N70 is slow on startup and slow to open messages, or any other aspect on the phone. This is infuriating.
I am with Orange. Firmware version after pressing *#0000# comes up as 2.0537.1.718-09-05 RM-84 but I wouldn't have a clue what this means.

RM-84 = Nokia's product code for the N70
Based on the discussions here the slowness seems to (might) be related to operator customized phone software (firmware) versions (at least those versions starting from 2, like yours 2.05...etc.).
Generic/retail versions of firmware are already at version 3.something for the N70 (newer/more recent, that is).
A Nokia service/repair center should be able to update your phone. Find the nearest one and ask them:

Problem description:
The processing speed of any function is extremely slow - such as opening Mail, Safari, clicking on a page within Safari, switching to MS Word, adding a window in Safari, loading a page from Safari. I get the spinning wheel most of the time before the action is completed. All other Macs which are newer in my home WiFi network operate just fine. I have done a top level (novice) check for malware, and haven’t found anything. Any help you can suggest would be truly appreciated! Thank you!

I don't see any of the usual software suspects associated with slow downs. You don't need the Seagate software, you should uninstall that.

You only have 2GB of ram and could upgrade to 8GB, but Snow Leopard should run ok in 2GB.....not great but ok.
Start up in Safe Mode OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support be paitient as it will take awhile to start as it checks and tries to repair any problems with the file system. Once it's completely started up you can restart normally.
Insert your Snow Leopard disc and restart while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions. While in Disk Utility check the SMART status of the hard drive, anything other than Verified indicates a problem with the hard drive.
Again, you only have 2GB of ram.....try restarting your Macbook every day.....it's been running for almost a week now. -
My brand new iMac is often extremely slow to open applications

Apr 30, 2015, 07:40:38 PM Self test - passedHi, actually it is mostly the Word and Excel for Mac that are slow to launch - but not always ! That's the frustrating thing: it can be quite fast sometimes; and sometimes exceedingly slow (up to 30 seconds). The kind of problem for which you turn in your PC to the store and they never see the issue; until you get back home with it. When it is slow; I try to observe with activity monitor what else is going on. But there is nothing really noteworthy to me.
I am pleasantly surprised that nobody -yet- has mentioned the super obvious fact that I bought a Mac and should not be using Microsoft products like Word and Excel. For me though, it is needed and in fact the availability of Office for mac was the very fact that made me go for Apple anyway and has taken away the last doubts to do so. Sadly the Office product does not really deliver: macro's are very slow to run (see plenty of other support posts and google results). This ticket though is specifically about the launch speed of the application.
About the fonts: the 100 euro Office software sadly did not mention in big black letters that it would create unhealthy fonts on my mac.
So for starting up in safe mode: I'd need to run my mac a very long time in safe mode before I could judge whether the launch speed is in that case ALWAYS fast, but thanks for the tip anyway. How does one delete Fonts ? According to the Font Book app everything was fine with my fonts. -
T430 2342CTO slow to open applications
Hi Mate, I am new to this lenovo community and not so good at computer as well, I need your assistance on my laptop, I have purchase same configuration for T430 (2342CTO) but what I am finding is laptop is very slow and browsers and application takes ages to open. Are you exprience same problem or do I need make some changes on laptop? its very unusal with having so high configuration its behaving like this. I have exprience with another laptop with lover configuration that works faster than this one. As we have excatly same configuration, I have not exprience hot on left palm.
Moderator note: moved post to its own thread and edited subject to match content.Out of the box, I reformatted my T430 and did a fresh install on the SSD - so I'm not sure my experience with the machine was the same. I do not remember having any issues with slow response in programs, but there are some things you can check.
1. Run Lenovo System Update and look for new drivers/bios/critical/recommended updates
2. Run Windows Update and install all Critical updates and look for optional driver/software updates
2. Uninstall Lenovo Solution Center, ThinkVantage Access Connections, ThinkVantage Communications Utility
3. Goto Control Panel > Power Options > Click the expand arrow underneath "Balanced" and select "High Performance"
If you are not too techically savy, that is where I would start with troubleshooting your problems. I only experience the hot palmrest when I'm using the CPU/GPU for intensive operations.

Macbook pro running slow to open applications and webpages?
About two days ago i noticed a small lag on my macbook pro but since then it has gotten much worse. I've done all the system updates and still no luck. Everything from the browser to the applications is lagging any ideas???

i have recently found that my macbook pro has been getting quite slow at opening applications. i also have countless pop-ups and advertisements on my internet browser and some applications freeze on my screen and i have to close the lid of my laptop and re-open to get it working again. My macbook was bought new last august so is not very old and i was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it?? should i take it into store?
Sounds like you got some form of malware. Not a virus per se, but something that is both impacting the running and launching the various popups.
Generally, you install these, knowingly or not. Be very wary of installing anything int he future.
For now, you need to either search them out, or get a program that can do it for you ( i am not familiar with them), or, worst case, backup, re-install system, copy only your files back. Destroy old backup and make new.
You might use the activity viewer to search for suspicious programs, then look for them, and remove them. But its hard.
Stay away form those sites and dont load stuff int he future.

Satellite Pro U300 very slow at opening programmes
Dear all,
I bought a Satellite Pro U300 in Feb 2008 and I have only used it 3-4 times since then... It is very slow at opening programmes (I have only a statistical programme installed) and webpages , and creates problems when I try to download other programmes that have a different version than Windows Vista.
I really have regretted buying this laptop and I am looking for someone to sell it.
Before I do so, I was wondering whether I could uninstall Windows Vista and install Windows XP for example, or do something else that would make my laptop pleasant to use.

My notebook was slow too until some background applications have been disabled.
You can disable it in MSCONFIG.
Type in RUN window msconfig and check the tab called startup.
There you can find the software which could slow down the OS.
Regarding the Win XP installation;
Yes, you can also install Win XP. Using the Win XP the notebook should be little bit faster because Win XP doesnt need many hardware resources.

Checked to see how much free space there is on the startup disk lately?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

If disk space is not the issue, booting in Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen.
From the drop down menu click Restart.

just update my iMac from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and the application are slow to open. The same happens to opening webpages . Please help

Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Reinstalling Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

Over the last couple of weeks, or over a month now, I have been noticing this machine is getting very slow in opening up any document. It also hesitates when closing a document. Not sure what's going on.
