Satellite laptop won't shut down

Any time I try to turn my computer off it won't do it. It will say it's shutting down, but it just sits there with that message. I have to turn off the unit and turn it back on to restart it.

whenever I choose to shut down, the computer goes to the shut down screen then just stays there.

  • My laptop won't shut down?

My MacBook won't shut down.  What can I co?

You could try & press (hold down) the power button for more than 10 seconds to see if that shuts it off.
But first, read the information ahead of an actual SMC reset, and try what you can as a troubleshooting measure here:
There also may be a reset of the System Management Controller that may help a power issue, as it can do several things. Read the article carefully...
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Then, you could later try to start the computer in SafeBoot (shift key held through startup, until you see login screen) then login to your account, and continue. See Disk Utility and choose first aid 'repair disk permissions' on the mac hard drive. Depending on the version of OS X and hardware you have, that may mean using a Recovery version of OS X utilities, and choosing Disk Utility in there, to fully attempt to repair an issue. Perhaps the SMC reset may be enough.
    Hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Satellite L40 won't shut down with power connected, and won't go in standby

Hi everybody. I hope someone can help me. Basically, there are two problems: one with shutting the laptop (Satellite L40-17U (Vista 32-bit Home Premium SP1) ) down when the power is connected, and one with closing the lid and putting it to sleep.
    1. Since a few weeks, it suddenly doesn't want to shut down, whenever the power is connected. When it is on battery, it will shut down. When the power is connected and I try shutting it down, it seems like it shuts down (all activity ceases and the LEDs go off) for about 1 or 2 seconds, and then it goes back on.
    2. When I close the lid (all settings in Vista are set to put the laptop in 'sleep' status when the lid is closed) the laptop goes into a state from which it can only be recovered by shutting it down by pressing the on/off button for about 10 seconds to completely shut it down. When closing the lid, only the battery LED keeps blinking orange (the way it should be), but apparently the laptop keeps consuming power, because when I reboot it later (first having to shut it down as described above) the battery tends to be quite a emptier than it was before rebooting it (like going from 100% to 65% in 30 minutes, while being in 'sleep' state). Also, when I open the lid, the other LEDs do go on again (green), but nothing happens.
After rebooting by first pressing the on/off button for 10 seconds to shut it down, I frequently get a message that Windows could not be started, and have to run System Repair.
I've just done a completely clean installation with the product recovery CD (didn't install SP1 yet), upgraded the BIOS to v1.90, but the problem remains.
I'm afraid my only option will be to bring it away for a warranty repair, but knowing that these repairs can take weeks, I'd prefer to try a solution anyone here could recommend me first. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Daniel Breslauer

    Hi guys
Never had such issue on my notebook but regarding to another users here in the forum the BIOS might help to solve such strange notebook behavior
To be honest the shut down issue is not known to me I noticed an standby issue on my notebook but the BIOS update helped.
Therefore I recommend updating the BIOS firstly.
If the issue will still appear, then the ASP should take a look into the notebook.
    Good luck

  • Safari won't close and now laptop won't shut down

So I have a Macbook Pro which is less than 2 months and as of last night Safari wont quit which wont let me shut down the laptop. any suggestions??

Have you used force quit  (Apple Menu/Force Quit then select app) on Safari? Have you tried holding down the power key for 5 seconds or so to force a power down?

  • Satellite A200 won't shut down when power supply is connected

The Satellite A200 just shuts down, if the power cable is disconnected before shutting down. Otherwise the notebook shuts down and restarts immediately (max 5 seconds between shut down and restart).
Does anybody got the same strange problem?

    Hi Thomas
You should definitely contact the ASP in your country. Maybe its something wrong with the power supply electronic on the notebooks motherboard.
As John said the replacement should be done for free because the A200 is a new series and the warranty should be valid.
    Good luck

  • G5 dual 1.8 WON'T shut down with TIGER 10.4.7

Hi all. Updated the G5 dual with Tiger, did the 10.4.7 combo update and it still won't shut down. Have to hold the power button. I've tried creating a new administrator but to no avail. Logging out won't do it either. I upgraded from 10.3.9 for music software reasons--too bad I was "forced up" since 10.3.9 worked fine. My G4 laptop 1.33 has no issues with Tiger at all.
    Any suggestions??

    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima a Level 4 here;
There are many reasons to become unable shutting down or restarting from Apple Menu. Some were explained by other posters.
Most importantly, loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action. However, the issue proves that somewhere in those routines cannot be performed.
Users authentication system seems to be intact because you can restart or shutdown from the login window. However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and affect loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart mentioned above.
Test if you can shutdown from the keyboard-- Holding down controloptioncommand keys, and then press the eject key.
Check if the loginwindow plists are corrupted. To do this test, remove the followings to temporary folders on the desktop, and shutdown from the keyboard shortcut combination. Restart the computer to test the recurrence.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /Users/HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Try disabling Login Items for third-party applications via the Accounts system preference, if any.
Verify whether any third-party kernel extensions (including device drivers) interfere with the loginwindow hooks process-- Start up with a Safe-mode, then test the Restart from Apple Menu to see whether it works. Also, boot into a Single-user mode, and test if "reboot" command is available from the BSD layer. The I/O Kit API for software developers provides a shutdown hook so that ".kext" troubleshooting may need to be considered. Besides, some bad programmed extension may not be unloaded automatically at a shutdown or restart.
If the computer is configured with Irish language Input method and/or third-party Irish keyboard, try disabling them to test.
A third-party application or custom script may interfere with the loginwindow hooks for the Shut Down or Restart. For example, if you install an application that prevents casually powering down a system, the Shut Down and Restart buttons may not work. Also, if you install a P2P file sharing application, try uninstalling it.
As last resorts, troubleshoot a bad RAM and consider "Erase and Install" solution.
    OPTION:
Post a part of system.log that indicates events from "localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us" to the next same line.
This may help to narrow down because restarting or shutting down the system process can initiate the procedure programmatically by sending an appropriate Apple event to Mac OS X Tiger's system process (loginwindow).
Likewise, check console.log whether any failures is reported.
    Corrections:
Most importantly, the loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action.
However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and it may impact on the loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart as mentioned above.
    Addendum:
If you post a copy of system.log, consider to edit the Ethernet interface ID to a fake value.
    API = Application Programming Interface
    Cheers!

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

    I have this question too.

  • External hard drive won't shut down after switch from OS10.5 to OS10.4.11

i recently chanded my OS from 10.5 to 10.4.11 (as a programme i want to use is not compatible with leopard), but since i have done this my external hard-drive won't shut down automatically when i shut down my mac. i have to switch it off at the plug instead.
can anyone suggest how i can get it to do this again?
i'm a little concerned that i'm damaging the external drive by turning it off manually all the time..
    thanks

Some hard drives shut off with shutdown, some don't. Sometimes hard drives that did shut off with one system will not do the same with a different system. My hard drives which did shut off, prior to 10.5 now stay on.
This is not really a problem as all hard drives spin down after 10- 20 minutes when not in use, whether your computer is on or off. Leaving the drive on is fine, shutting it off manually is fine.

  • 10.5.8 won't shut down after bad SD disk removal.  It stops all applications but won't get past the final shut down screen.

I had a disk error with a SD disk from my camera.  Removed the disk from the card reader and got the Disk Removal Error alert.  Then the whole thing froze up on me.  Noting else would eject, No other apps would shut down and basically nothing worked.  I couldn't shut down so I removed the battery.  Restarted the computer ok then tried to repair the SD disk in question.  No luck on the repair so ejected it again.  Then tried to restart OS and it won't shut down again except everything still works but it just won't shut down.

  • Mini Mac won't shut down!

Core Duo won't shut down or log out or re-start but can sleep. Can use terminal to kill processes but it is not an application causing the problem. The output is to a TV via S-Video and am using wireless keyboard via USB.
    Appreciate any suggestions.

    hello to the mac world
    @sunra
same problem here on my mini mac, intel solo core, happens 3 times in one week now.
it seems that my mini ignores shutdown, restart and log out.
when I terminate the task "login window" then he jumps to the login screen, where I can shutdown or change the user.
anyone an idea about this little problem?
okay, it is not a big problem and with this problem I feel already home now...yes, I used windows the last years

  • Battery gets very hot during use and doesn't last long, fan runs at high speed, computer won't shut down

Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. Can someone suggest something please.
    Thanks.

  • Windows won't shut down

I got a iPod nano about a month ago, and installed iTunes on my PC. All is well so far... until I try to shut down. The computer restarts instead. After installing and unistalling iTunes from the cd and apple.com nothing changes. I've tried shuting down all iPod and iTunes related processes in the task manager before shutting down, but the result is always the same.
Called Apple help, and they've never heard of this problem.
Can someone help? I like iTunes to much to give up on this one.

What makes you think iTunes is causing this?
Are you getting some kind of error? Have you looked in your application & system event viewer logs?
I mean, if you've shut down iTunes & iPod processes in task manager, and Windows still won't shut down.....why would iTunes be causing this?

Has anyone seen this before? All help greatly appreciated!

    Hi Sebastian,
Thank you for your quick reply. Here's what I tried:
    1. reset the install as you suggested, and tried running root.sh again. The exact same thing happened.
    2. restored to an openfiler snapshots that were taken right before the failed upgrade. Increased memory on both VMs to 1280M as you suggested. Rebooted the virtual environment and ran the installation again. This time, the root.sh script froze my environment - not enough memory to support this.
    3. restored the openfiler snapshots again. Increased memory on one node (odbn1) to 1500M. Ran the install for a single node cluster. It got past this error.
    Thank you!!!
Also, thanks for the tip on the ntp.init file. That did eliminate the error for ntpd not running during the installation.

  • Import to iPhoto. Mac won't shut down..

I imported some of my pictures from my iPhone to iPhoto, I then stopped the import and took out my iPhone. My iPhoto won't shut down now and it says that the import shall finish before I can shut it down. I can't even shut down my macbook, because of this. Anybody who knows what to do about it?

Thank you so much, for the information.  This worked for me as well (using force quit).  I still have the issue of iPhoto not importing my last set of photos.  I did force quit and then restarted iPhoto, hoping the pictures (and one video) would just upload and it still won't import them.  I keep getting the same message as before, "Photos are being imported to the photo library.  Please wait for import to complete".  Only option is to click 'ok".  or do a force quit.  Have any input about this?

Any thoughts would be massively appreciated ..... apple care run out and ZERO funds to have fixed !!! : (( v sad as i love my mac and can't do without it!!!

I tried to run the disk utility and it wouldn't run properly
Exactly what did you do to run Disk Utility and exactly what happened up to the freeze?
I called some place to ask for advice and they said it could be my logic board???
That's an easy answer to give but not necessarily the correct one.
If you have the system restore disc that came with your Mac, boot with that disc in the Mac while holding down the "D" key. That will invoke hardware diagnostics. Run those several times to investigate the possibility that your Mac has a hardware flaw.
