Satellite M100-164 - what hard drive can I install?

Hi,
I have a Satellite M100-164 ... its a middle-east version of the M100, pretty much identical to the European version as far as I can tell.
(short model no psma0e)
I want to install a new hard drive. The spec says it uses a 5400rpm, Serial-ATA hard drive.
Can I just use any hard drive of that type, or are there other things to watch out for (e.g. drive depth, pin configuration?)
e.g. could I use this drive:
"Toshiba MK2555GSX 250GB 2.5-Inch Internal SATA HDD"

Hi!
On SATA HDDs there are no capacity limits and you have on every HDD the same pin assignment. That means you can use every SATA HDD that you want and also SATA2 HDDs because they are downgrade compaitible so SATA1 standard.
However, you can buy the cheaper version from Amazon. This HDD should also work well in the notebook.

Yes, as long as it's a SATA and not an IDE/ATA drive.

You can install directly, assuming the disk is newer than your computer and not designed for a different Mac, but doing so won't install iLife.

5400 RPM. There are no 7200 RPM drives at that capacity. However, Seagate has a 750 GB drive in the 7200 RPM speed.

I recently had a situation in which my dual-processor 2.0 G5 was completely refurbished by Apple repair-new logic board, both processors, video card, thermistor, all new. Finally it has been working well after a month of trips back and forth from the Apple store. I have two internal hard drives installed on my G5, both 300GB, one for OS applications, and one for audio. I am running out of space on my main hard drive, and so I recently purchased a Maxtor 1TB hard drive, now manufactured by Seagate, from Fry's. After having my G5 refurbished, I was having an issue with my Samsung 930B monitor going into sleep mode when I boot-up from a CD, but other than that G5 was working fine. I removed the main 300GB hard drive from slot #1 and put it into slot #2, from which I had removed my audio hard drive. I installed the Maxtor drive in slot #1 and reformatted it for Mac using my laptop with ATA/USB cables previously purchased for data transfer. This took about 14 hours as I used the "zeros" option. After that I hooked up the internal cables to both drives and tried to boot up from Leopard in order to install it on the Maxtor drive, but again my monitor went into to sleep mode. We went to the Apple store to try to see if there was an issue with the computer, but everything worked fine with their monitors and CD's, as well as my CD. So there is some kind of issue with my monitor, probably software as it works fine when booting up from the main hard drive, and also was fine when I did its self-test function. While at the Apple store, they installed Leopard from their hard drive which took about 30 minutes.
My problem is this: When I arrived home, I turned on my G5, which had been set to boot from my new Maxtor drive and complete the Leopard setup process, which we had decided to do at home as it would have taken another 20 minutes in the Apple store. The G5 turned on, chimed, I got the Apple screen with the wheel, but then after that my monitor goes into sleep mode. I can hear Leopard's setup intro playing through the speakers, but the screen is in sleep mode. So I reboot holding down the option key so I can boot up from my old (300GB) main hard drive, now in slot #2. This works and the monitor screen does not go to sleep. However, as I am browsing on the web to check for issues concerning this monitor, the G5 freezes, and I get a screen with black bars with writing in them and various technical language across the screen. This happened several times after rebooting. Finally I shut the computer down. I am going to try removing the new hard drive and putting both old ones back in and see if the G5 stops crashing. I think the monitor issue is a separate issue, and I am more concerned with the crashing, as previous to the new hard drive installation the G5 was working fine, monitor fine, other than the issue when booting up from a CD. Do I need more memory? Is the 1TB hard drive too large for my dual-processor 2.0 G5 and overloading it? Would I be better off with a 500GB drive? Would appreciate advice from persons with experience in this area. Thank you.

I have replaced my 5 year old G5 with a Mac Pro, as the G5 just had too many issues, even after replacing all major components (logic board, both processors, video card, etc.) Once I took out the 1 TB hard drive from my old G5, it stopped having the kernel panic issue. Nonetheless I had been through a lengthy repair process previous to this issue, so I didn't care to trust an older machine any longer, especially since being told by an Apple tech that the "new" parts were really just older parts stockpiled from a central location. Could be new, could be refurbished. Apple was kind enough to credit the money we had spent on the G5 repairs towards the purchase of my Mac Pro.

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!

I have a touchsmart iq800 with windows 7, 64 bit. This is the 3rd time I've had a hard drive failure in 2 1/2 years. I am not too familiar with computer lingo and need to know what type of hard drive to get. I called hp and they wouldn't tell me anything because I'm out of warranty. I know I have a seagate. At this point, I want something entirely different. If someone could just tell me what name, #, etc of a hard drive, I can order one. I've installed 2 already and am getting good at it. The iq800 appears to be a series number and not a model or product number. Please provide the full HP model name and/or product number of the computer in question for accurate assistance.

What Hard Drive Can I use?

Ok stupid question time. I want to get a firewire enclosure and put 3.5 hard drive in it for my mac mini. Can I buy any old hard drive and jam it into the box or do I have to buya hard drive that is specific for the Mac? I mean are hard drives mac or pc specific or are the just hard drives and formatted to the pc or mac when you buy them? I am sorry for the dumb question but I have been a PC user for years and am pretty new to the Mac world (only 1 year so far). Thanks for the reponse.

I'm new to Mac as well. I've only had mine about 2 months. As far as HDD Exclosures, you should be able to find an enclosure for less than $69. A couple things to look out for when buying an enclosure is to look at the drive size capability. I've seen enclosures that at in the $30 price, but some stop at the 200Gb size range, where the ones in the $70 range, will support the larger drives like 500Gb. Now, this isn't always the case, as I have seen some expencive enclosures that don't support beyond 200Gb drives.
Now, if you decide to buy the enclosure, and drive as seperate pieces, you're drive will most likely not be partitioned, or formatted, as this is normally the case with boxed Western Digital, Maxtor, etc... So you'd need to take care of that with the Drive Utility that's part of your Mac after it's in the enclosure and connected to the Mac.
As a side note, I was down at my local CompUSA and they had a 160 Gb External LaCie Firewire drive at $139.00. This was a better buy for me, as I didn't need to buy the components, didn't need to put them together, and was less money than buying a 160Gb drive and enclosure. The LaCie drive was formatted FAT32, which I quicly changed to the Mac Journaled File System.

T61 Hard Drive can be installed on what other computers?

What computers brands and models can a T61 Hard Drive be put into.
My T61 is starting and connecting to the internet, but the monitor is dark. I was hoping that I could take out the HD and pop it into another computer to see and access my files.

Your drive is unlikely to _boot_ on anything but a T61 or very similar Lenovo laptop.
You should be able to install it as a 2nd (non-boot) drive on most machines w/a SATA drive interface to retrieve your files. A SATA-USB or SATA-eSATA external drive adapter is handy for this kind of thing. Either a temporary one, or a more permanent installation. Something like one of these:

What Hard drives can unplug into my Airport Extreme?

Can I plug a normal flash stick into the AirPort Extreme or do only powered external hard drives work with it.
