Satellite M30-604 - Hard disk mechanical failure

My satellite M30-604 is within warranty (bought 10 months ago) and my Hitachi travelstar hdd crashed out of the blue. The crash is probably mechanical so I can not use data recovery software (it makes things worse). The only way to get my data is to give the HD to some specialist who will open it in a "clean room" for something like 300 - 600 Euros (!) and try to recover as much as possible. Now:
-> Toshiba says that if I do that the warranty is void and I will also have to pay for a new disk (+ 100 euros)
-> If I want to replace the disk (warranty) then toshiba gets the old disk and I lose my data forever!!!
WAIT A MINUTE GUYS!!!
a) this is my data, my work and you CAN NOT blackmail me with this "warranty void" stuff. I want my old crashed disk back! I want to try to recover as much as I can! my 10-hours-a-day work is IN there!
b) Moreover even if the heads of the disk crashed, my PERSONAL, PRIVATE data are still in the disk and CAN be read with special techniques. How can toshiba (or any other company for that matter) ask me to hand it over to them?
What should I do?
What would you do?

Hi there,
I sympathise with your problem and can only suggest the following thoughts :
1. Recovery of your data would seem the most important factor here. I would suggest removing the HDD yourself so that it can be sent to a specialist to recover what data is possible.
2. Since removal of the HDD does not usually involve extensive dismantling of the notepad it should not invalidate the remaining warranty (other than on the HDD itself).
3. A replacement HDD can usually be obtained quite cheaply from one of the internet sellers (check using GOOGLE for a suitable replacement). you can then re-install your operating system from the recovery CDs.
4. I would suggest investing in a suitable backup software package (such as Norton Ghost) to avoid this problem in the future. (I have had four replacement HDDs on my Satellite A30 in the last 12 months).

  • Cannot install modem on SATELLITE M30-604

I can't see my modem in the Device Manager. I can't see a com-port in the device manager.
When I choose controlpanel>phone and modem options I see no modem.
I choose the Add-button. My modem is not detected. Then I have the option to install it from a list.
    I choose Have disk.
    I choose the Browse-button and
I select the Tools&Utilities CD ROM that came with my notebook (or the downloaded files from Toshiba).
I select the (D:\Modem Driver\NETHERLD)ltsmwxp.inf file on the CD.
Still NO models appear in the Install new modew window.
How can I install my modem?

    Thanx Pelox.
I' am sorry but I don't understand what you mean. The notebook came with Win XP and I ungraded it to Win XP Pro.

The modem worked fine with Win XP Pro. I do not know when it stopped working because ad home I have a T1-connection. I use the modem only on the road.

I did. But when I try to "Add new hardware" no models/drivers can be found when I select either .inf-file. (And I know how that should look like!).

Sorry but this does not feel like solving a problem :-))
At one point, after a restart, the modem seemed to install (what a wonder) automatically. After the next restart it had disappeared :-((
When I read the log, I find:
Opening the modem device failed with error 000005aa.
    Another question:
When looking at Toshiba-download-site I can choose some modelno. for my notebook. I have a Satellite M30-604 with an upgrade from Win XP to Win XP Pro. What modelno. does that make? Is it a sm30x?

  • Replacement hard disk for Satellite M30-604

Having problems with my hard disk and want to change it. Believe original was a IC25N060ATMR04-0 which appears to be a Hitachi 4200rpm 60Gb UDMA drive with an 8 Meg buffer. Can I replace it with a larger, faster drive? If so what spec must I have? Grateful for any ideas!

    Hi,
So, you just have to make sure that you install a IDE drive and not a SATA. The rest is obsolete since you dont have to take care for any specs like speed or cache. Just grab the biggest drive you can get and install it.
Thats all. In case of any questions just let your thougts flow into that forum here ;)

  • Toshiba Satellite L650-07U, Hard disk failure and replacement

    Hi all,
I have Toshiba Satellite L650-07U Laptop, Model: PSK1EC-0700Q with 4GB RAM, 650GB HD, Windows 7 Home Premium installed. At the time of first use, i made Recovery DVDs which took 4 blank DVDs using Recovery media creator.
From 2 weeks it is giving problem, at start its slowdown with every application,  then suddenly it started Hard disk failure error and ask to backup important files. From that instant i did all my backup save in another portable Hard drive.
I had hiren boot CD, and ran RAM test and found it OK, and then run Hard Disk test and found few bad sectors at few certain point, As 650GB Hard disk was taking alot time of time for checking bad sectors, so i stopped that application.
First I tried Recovery DVDs to restore Windows, but it failed as Laptop DVD-Writer was unable to boot from those created DVDs (DVDs are OK as had checked it on Desktop computer DVD-ROM), Laptop DVD-Writer is also working as I test few more bootable CDs and it booted perfectly, but it is not booting from Recovery DVDs.
Than i tried to restore from Recovery partition using Factory restore settings, it erases all data and reinstall new and fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. It works fine for few hours than again pops up Hard Disk Failure message again and again. I searched here in Toshiba Forum and have found similar problem with other members and finally decided that it need to replace Hard Disk with new one. As It is now two and a half month old, thats why i need to buy new Hard Disk for my Laptop.
I checked all partitions of drive using Hiren Boot CD, and had found that there are four default partitions in Toshiba original laptop drive,
One hidden partition of 1.5 GB
One hidden partition of almost 21 GB
One hidden partition of almost 12 GB
One partition of 561 GB, which was the original partition where windows 7 was installed along with all of my Data.
Now I want to replace faulty drive with a new one and have a lot of question in my mind which I need to share with you guys.
At the time of first use I installed Windows 7 64 bit edition, and made Recovery DVDs, and at second time of restore to factory setting I had installed Windows 7 32 bit. I have confusion about recovery DVDs (which is not booting from default DVD-Writer of Laptop), either it has 64 Bit recovery data or 32 bit? Or have both 64 and 32 bit Data.
Toshiba restore to factory setting without using any recovery DVD/USB is the best possible way to restore Windows 7, How can I make same recover hidden partitions from original/faulty hard drives to new hard drive partitions? Is this possible and how?
On Default hard drive there was one partition of 561GB instead of two or more partitions. Is this possible to split partitions in new hard drives instead of one big partition?
As Recovery DVDs are not able to boot from laptop default DVD-Writer, is it possible to open those DVDs on another System and copy tem in USB drive and use it for booting? If it is possible than please show me the steps for making bootable USB from these Recovery DVDs.
    Thanks,
    masterleous

This site is for US computers. I doubt you'll get your questions for that Canadian model answered here.
There appear to be two recovery partitions. Maybe one for 32- and one for 64-bit Windows. Or maybe one is for English and the other for French.
Your User's Manual isn't much help either. You probably need to ask Toshiba tech support in Canada.
About all I have to offer is this: Be wary of drives with advanced-format technology. See my message about that.

  • Satellite A215-S7414 Hard Disk Failure

Hi. I purchased my laptop 16 months ago and this is the third time I have had hard Disk Failure. The first two times were in the first year and I received a new harddrive after sending it in to Depot for repair. Here we are the Third time and now Im outta warranty and apparently outta luck. Here are my many questions, first of all I didnt have the opportunity to back anything up, so if I were to replace the Hdd on my own, does that mean I would also have to purchase a new Vista package? Also, I have a Western Digital External harddrive that Im not using.....would that be of any assistance to me in trying to recover anything from the laptop?
Everyone tells me it is cheaper to just get a new one, but that isnt practical and I dont want to just trash a laptop that is only 16 months old.
    Please help
    Thank you
    Model #PSAFGU0IU002

I'll try to answer the questions you've asked.  First, you don't need to buy a new Vista package.  You should call Toshiba customer service at (800) 457-7777 and order a set of recovery disks for your notebook.  They will want the serial number and a credit card to cover the shipping and handling ($19.95 standard, $24.95 overnight).  The recovery disks will restore the system to 'as-shipped' condition with all of the appropriate drivers and utilties.  You can purchase a replacement drive reasonably from any number of sources.  Replacing the hard drive is straightforward.  You would remove the cover from the bottom, slide the drive out and transfer the hard drive 'caddy' to the new drive.  Slip it in, boot from the recovery disks and away you go.  You could install the old drive in an external USB housing and see if you can recover anything from it.  I can't think of a role for your current external drive other than as additional storage.

  • Satellite L305-S5894 hard disk failure?

I've started getting this error pop-up suddenly and i'm not sure how to solve it.
The computer still seems to be running just fine, but the pop-up continues coming every 5 minutes or so.
Is there a way to fix this or must i buy a new hard disk?
And if i need a replacement, what is reccomended and most efficient for this model?
Thanks in advance for any help, i am new to laptops.

how am i to be sure it's not advanced-format?
It's easy to look up the properties of a hard drive after you know the model number. Here are a few advanced-forumat drives at NewEgg. Notice that they all have it in the description.
I do have access to the recovery discs, But do you think that it could potentially save the hard drive?
No. The warning refers to a hardware malfunction. It cannot be fixed with software.

  • Satellite M30-604 freezes and fan doesn't work after replacement

Satellite SM30-604. Laptop left on carpet overnight and overheated! Fan doesn't spin and laptop only occasionally starts up. Thinking the fan was fault I replaced the fan but even this new fan doesn't spin. The heatsink is totally clean - no dust inside the vanes at all. The laptop is only 2 years old.
Using forced-cooling (by sticking a vacuum nozzle at the cooling fan outlet!) the laptop occasionally starts up like normal right up to the Desktop screen with all usual icons and no error messages. But then it goes no further - the screen, keyboard and mouse freeze.
Most of the time it doesn't start up at all. When it doesn't start, the blue LED comes on but there's no hard-disk activity or LCD screen at all - even the wifi LED doesn't even come on.
Really grateful if anyone know's what's going on. Not sure if it's the main CPU that's faulty?
    Thanks in advance.
    Charlie

    Hello Charlie
Like you know on this way it is not easy to give any precise diagnostic but according to your posting I presume that there is some complex problem and unit should be checked properly. I also think that there must be some problem with electronic.
It is really possible that mainboard must be replaced but, as I already said, it is no possible to say anything precise about your problem. Try to contact Asp and you will see what they will say.

  • Satellite M30-604 only seeing 128GB HDD capacity from a 320GB HDD

    I have a M30-604 with XP-SP2 and bios version 1.7
I've installed a new internal 2.5" 320gb hard disk - but XP disk manager only sees 128gb total capacity. There's not even any unallocated space.
Is the phoenix bios 48bit LBA compatible?

    Hi!
During the old IDE interface its only possible to use 128GB disk space and so you dont see the full capacity of 320GB.
BIOS update cant solve this problem because its hardware related and so you have to live with this issue.
Alternative you bring the 320GB HDD back and buy another one, e. g. 120GB.

  • Satellite M30X - high hard disk drive utilization

After login in Windows XP (SP2), my toshiba laptop is very slow. The hard disk drive light is continuously on for 5 minutes. I've looked at the task manager, but CPU utilization is low and RAM usage is low. There is no program that seems to use a lot of CPU or RAM.
I've actually turned off the paging file to see if the problems due to intensive use of the paging file on the HDD, but problem persists. The model of the laptop is Satellite M30X-113.
I don't know if it's related, but this problem arose around the time that I've taken out a 256 MB RAM module and installed a 512 MB one (making the total ram memory 1024 MB).

    Hi
    > I don't know if it's related, but this problem arose around the time that I've taken out a 256 MB RAM module and installed a 512 MB one (making the total ram memory 1024 MB).
If this issue has begun after installation of the new memory module then I would say that the new memory module is responsible for this issue.
You could also try to put back the 256MB module to check if the issue still persist.
This would be the easiest way for checking

  • Satellite P200-1EE - Hard disk not found if I try to install XP

Hi and I have a problem.
I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite P200-1EE series laptop running (of all things) Vista and nothing but problems ever since so im trying to install XP professional and overwrite Vista.
But whenever I try to install it says "hard disk not found..... unable to access"
I've heard of problems like this before something like a "software block protocol"
    Any suggestions?

    Hi!
Why you dont search in the forum before you start a new topic?
I mean you will hundreds of threads about this issue here in the forum and you will find the solution of your problem in few minutes.
Well, the reason for this is because you need the SATA drivers before you can install Windows XP. As far as I know your notebook is equipped with an Intel chipset and so you need the Intel Storage Manager. You can integrate the drivers using an external FDD or nLite [www.nliteos.com]. Furthermore this document could be useful for you:

  • Satellite C660-1CV - hard disk crashed in 2 days

I have purchased Toshiba laptop(C660-1CV) from a local dealer just before two days. I had loaded VMware along with couple of VMs and some other important software.
In spite of my company insisting for lenevo I had gone for Toshiba because I trust the brand and I have had real good experience with Toshiba. Today morning that is after two days of purchase of laptop the hard disk crashed and I got a black screen no OS prompt, nothing. My dealer said he cannot do anything I have to take it to Al Futtiam service center. The service center guy just re-connected the hard disk and it didnt work, he straight away made a statement that hard disk needs to be replaced and it will another 4 to 5 days. He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay 99 AED. Isnt that strange enough ??? My own laptop which is just 2 days old crashed and I have to pay for getting my data. The technical guy did not do any other troubleshooting except reconnecting the hard disk.
I want to escalate it to the right level in Toshiba. if anybody has any contacts in UAE region pass it on to me.

    Hi pmavani,
Im sorry to hear that that HDD died after 2 days that not normally but such things can happen, especially with HDD that is a mechanical part. But dont worry this case is covered by warranty so you can get a new HDD for free from an authorized service provider and as the guy said it takes 4 or 5 days. Thats ok so the notebook can repaired within one week.
    > He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay 99 AED. Isnt that strange enough ???
No, thats not strange enough. Warranty doesnt cover backup, you have to do this yourself. Thats the reason why you should install and configure backup software before you do anything.

    Hi,
Unfortunately it does look like you'll need to replace the HDD - the error code for the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.
The HDD is a warranty item, so if your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP ( with the 24 character error code ) and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.

  • Hard Disk Drive Failure

    Hello,
I recently tried updating my iTunes on my Pavilion g6 with Windows 8 and when it went to restart to complete the update, the computer never restarted.  I ran a diagnostic and this is what I get:
    failure id: U4VL7D-6GE74R-MFPx0k-60RU03
    hard disk short dst: failed
    product id: D1C00UA#ABA
Would an iTunes update really have caused my hard disk to go bad?  I'm confused?  It seems as though, based on what I've read on some other posts, that I will have to replace my hard disk.  Could you provide a manual of how to do so based on my laptop and Windows 8 please?  Also, if I do so, will I lose all of the documents/pics/music/etc. I have saved on my laptop?
    Thank you so much.

Updating iTunes did not kill the hard drive...purely coincidental. You have to be doing something when it fails.
It is a G6-2320dx for anyone else looking in. Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
Page 44 shows physical hard drive replacement. Do you have the recovery disks the system asks you to make when the laptop is new? If so you can reload it to factory condition from those. If not, we can link you to a Windows 8 DVD image you can download which will install and activate automatically. Your Key Code is embedded in the BIOS and will be applied during Windows 8 installation.
Likely data can be recovered from the old drive. You just need a usb to SATA adapter like this to plug it in to another computer and copy and paste your files to another computer like yours when you get the new drive installed and loaded with Windows. All your drivers and factory programs are on the old drive as well as your music itunes settings etc. We can probably help you migrate all that over:

  • Satellite M30-304 USB mouse sporadic failure

Have the above laptop running XP. After 2 years running a laser mouse via USB with no probs, suddenly the pointer stops for a few seconds, then picks up again, stops, starts etc. Thoroughly infuriating. There is an error message every so often saying the device attached to the USB may not be installed correctly.
I uninstall the mouse software and re-install it, run all my anti-virus and tracker software, still the same problem. as the trackpad still works okay, I decide it must be the mouse and buy a brand new one and install it. It has worked fine for a few weeks now, then today, the same problem!!
Anyone out there had the same problem or know a solution?...

    Hi
    I use not a Satellite M30 but a Satellite M40.
I use it since one year and I have no problems with my mouse.
I can't believe that the notebook has a malfunction because as you said in your posting new mouse has worked at the beginning.
I have no idea why your mouse pointer stops. Maybe the mouse driver causes a strange failure.
You can also try to remove the USB ports form the device manager.
After new reboot the OS should recognize the USB ports again with standard settings.
Then you can try to connect the mouse again.
You can also try to use the mouse without installing the delivered mouse manufacture drivers. Check it
