Satellite M30: Replace DVD with additional HDD?

Hello!
As my Satellite M30-642 doesn't offer a modular bay to switch drives and as I got an additional DVD writer for USB which I can use I am thinking of trying an experiment: removal of DVD drive and replacing it with an additional HDD/SSD.
As the SSDs are very light weight, have no moving parts and do not necessarily require screws to be installed and as the DVD slot delivers IDE and power connector this could work. The SSD needs to be placed inside an old and modified slimline cd-rom to ensure that the modification isn't visible and the notebook is safe from dust etc.
Has anyone tried something like that before? Are there any solutions to buy for Sat M30 (model year 2004)?
Cheers, obreitfelder

Hi
As far as I know the Sat M30 doesnt support the slim select bay and therefore you cannot use such adaptor instead of the CD/DVD drive.
Sorry this is not possible

  • Can I replace DVD with SSD drive on Satellite P?

    Hi everyone !
I would like to know if I can replace DVD by caddy's SSD ?
If I do it about that, Do I loose my warranty ?
    Thanks.

I dont know what notebook model you have but in most cases such replacement (ODD ? SSD) would work in case the notebook would support the slim-select bay.
This was the case in older Tecra and Portege notebooks
I guess Satellite notebooks dont support such upgrade but this is just an assumption..
    Warranty?
Well, if you would disasemble the notebook, the warranty will be canceled

  • Satellite M70 replacement DVD drive advice needed

    Hi
The Mat****a US-841s DVD drive in my M70 has expired.
I would like to replace it with a Sony Optiarc, but I notice it says operating system Vista and I've got XP Home.
I have spent hours researching this and I can't find a drive that's compatible, can anyone tell me if the Sony is ok or recommend a suitable alternative?
I don't want to fork out money and then have lots issues I just want it to work straight out of the box although minor fiddling isn't a problem..
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Hey Andy,
I dont know if the other drive that you mean will working in your Satellite M70 but I would recommend checking the user manual of your notebook. There you can find a list of compatible drives they are pretested. You should find this information on the first pages I think.
    Check this!!!
The point is that not all drives are compatible with all notebooks so you should buy a pretested drive.

  • W520 Replace DVD with another Hard Drive and IEEE 1394 spec for music recording

To increase the performance, I am taking the 160 GB SSD instead of the mechanical drive. Obviouslt, I need more space than this. I don't care about the DVD rom. It can't play blu ray anyway. Is it possible to replace the dvd drive with a hard drive? Where can I get a replaceable drive for this? What do I do with the DVD? Can I sell it back?
I need to do music recording with this. I was wondering about the IEEE 1394 spec; the latency etc. If I remember correctly the W510 IEEE1394 was very good, probably was manufactured by Texas Instruments. I could not find anything about it anywhere. Not even here: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf
Also, a bit worried about the sound card. How good is it? Did anyone use this laptop for music recording?

    hey udvranto,
with regard to this, i would suggest contacting tech support via the number listed in the link below to check if it is possible to replace the dvd with your harddrive.
    http://www.lenovo.com/contact/us/en/
on the part of the soundcard, I believe it is good for music recording. Though this really depends on the software that you're going to use to record.

  • T530 Replacing DVD with HDD drive

    Hello, Lenovo community!
I decided to upgrade my new T530 with SSD OCZ Vertex4 drive.
Put it instead of preinstalled 1TB WD hdd drive. Remove DVD and put 1TB WD via ESPADA SS12: http://www.nix.ru/autocatalog/notebook_accessory/Espada_SS12_SATA_HDD_SATA_118550.html
Laptop can`t see 1TB WD: in bios and in windows too. BIOS revision 2.53, latest
Hard-drive and Hdd-bay 100% working (checked it by connecting these stuff to desktop computer)
I am completly confused by this situation. Please advice!
Sorry for my English, this language is not my native one.

Installing hdd in original Lenovo bay (tenfold difference in price - in Russia) solved this problem. I think that lenovo specifically use non standard pins for powering hdd. They don't want to lose money on accessories... pretty lame. Anyway, everything in this case works fine now.

  • Using OneStep DVD with a HDD Camera

I am a relatively new mac user (4 months) but i've navigated my way around pretty well and have used all the ilife software as well as final cut express and some other things with much delight. But I have a wife and have a 1 year old baby. The wife is intelligent but would rather not spend time editing video etc.. but would rather take our files directly off the camera and burn them to dvd.. So i noticed the onestep dvd process which would be perfect if we had a firewire type camera.. But we don't. We also don't have firewire on our new macbook. Hence the reason we bought a HDD camera that does AVCHD. Just wondering if anyone knows if iDVD could use a HDD camera with a quick process such as OneStep DVD.
    thanks
    Steve

Too late to edit my reply so I'll add this here .....
The only way I can think of to accomplish your wife's objective is with a FW minidv camcorder (example pictured below) and a Dvd Recorder with a FW input like this one (Daewoo DVR07):
The advantage in this is that all is done in real time (as opposed to waiting for iDvd to capture and encode a one step dvd) and includes a basic menu and interval chapters if you wish (not to mention the ability to record in sessions as opposed to write at once only thru iDvd).
Btw ... iDvd's One Step can actually take longer than using the traditional approach of iMovie => iDvd (just so you are aware).
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Is Satellite 2430-101 compatible with 100GB HDD?

    Dear fellows,
I've bought right now a Hitachi Travelstar 7K100, 100G HDD.
Can I use this HDD with my Toshiba 2430-101 notebook? Has anyone made experiences with this combination?
    With best regards,
    Jarek

    Hi Jimi,
well, i speak polish, i was born in Poland, but I have been living in Germany since 1984. :)
I've ordered now HITACHI Travelstar E7K100 60GB HDD 7200rpm 8MB Cache 2,5Z". I hope, it will work. Additionally I spoke with the Toshiba Support. The call agent has said, I've got the possibility to buy an official hardware bundle from Toshiba. It could choose between a 100GB or 120GB HDD and I would get a BIOS Update to get the HDD started. And I can imagine it would be very expensive. The call agent will inform me later, how much it would cost. In my opinion, it's not obliging to get the BIOS update for bigger hard discs just in conjuction with an expensive harddisc bundle.
Furthermore I come to know that Toshiba supports officially 60GB HDD. So, I've ordered now my Hitachi and I'll see, if everything gonna be alright.
    With best regards,
    Jaroslaw Minorowicz

  • Satellite M30-604 only seeing 128GB HDD capacity from a 320GB HDD

    I have a M30-604 with XP-SP2 and bios version 1.7
I've installed a new internal 2.5" 320gb hard disk - but XP disk manager only sees 128gb total capacity. There's not even any unallocated space.
Is the phoenix bios 48bit LBA compatible?

    Hi!
During the old IDE interface its only possible to use 128GB disk space and so you dont see the full capacity of 320GB.
BIOS update cant solve this problem because its hardware related and so you have to live with this issue.
Alternative you bring the 320GB HDD back and buy another one, e. g. 120GB.

  • Satellite M30 slow booting, performance sluggish & HDD activity light on most of the time

Have the above issue with my laptop. It used to run faster than my desktop but performance has degraded. Runs XP SP2 and Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works. No errors show when running Norton Tests. Have reformatted hard disk and reinstalled software but little difference.
Laptop takes @5 mins to boot. Opening Outlook takes 10 seconds. Hard disk light is on most of time so wondered if hard disk related.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
Download Hirens Boot CD (if you have a fast internet connection, as the file is 65MB). This CD has quiet a few tests you can use for HDD. HDD regenerator for instance will repair any surface damage on the disks etc. As will a few others. Hope this helps.

  • With remote_os_authent being deprecated, will replacement come with additional cost?

One of our applications uses AD with remote_os_authent for single sign on (for some users) to the underlying database.
The database is currently on 9iR2 but will soon be moved to 11gR2  - with remote_os_authent now deprecated, I am under the impression from the vendor that one has to now add Oracles Access Manager with it's extra cost now that remote_os_authent is being phased out.
The vendor's app is tied in with Microsoft Active Directory to pass along credentials to implement single sign on, as a result of remote_os_authent being deprecated they tell me many of their customers are balking at purchasing an additional license(s) so they have now ported the application to use MSSQL database for a back end, as MSSQL provides integration with AD at no extra cost.  This is an option I have been asked to look into as well, if there is going to be an extra cost to what we've already been using at no cost.
I've not had a lot of experience with remote_os_authent, and am confused if integrating database logins with AD specifically requires the remote_os_authent parameter or one can create a user identified externally and have AD pass the domain credentials without the remote_os_authent parameter. We have EE licensing and if I have to purchase an additional product at an additional cost now then I'll likely look at having them port the app to use MSSQL as well.
    Anyone else running into this?
    thanks in advance

Anything regarding licensing, please check with your friendly sales rep.
You may need to skip 11g and go straight to 12c.
    Oracle Database Editions
"Enterprise User Security is an EE feature for directory-based management of database users. It does require a corresponding Oracle Identity Management Directory Services Plus to be licensed.
Usage of Enterprise User Security with Oracle Database strong authentication (PKI, Kerberos) no longer requires Oracle Advanced Security to be licensed"
As far as I know:  kerberos === Windows 2008+ AD
Again - anything regarding licensing, please check with your friendly sales rep.

  • Satellite A300-1G5 - Can I change HDD place?

    Hi everyone;
I have this laptop : [Toshiba Satallite A300 - 1G5|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&com.broadvis ion.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=1055589] . it has the standard specification no upgrades.
I was thinking if it possible to move the HDD from its place (which on the left side of the laptop) to the right side of the laptop, since my model can have 2 separate HDD. This idea came to my mind because of the fact that the CPU ( cooling module ) is actually is on the left side as well as HDD. As everybody knows , CPU generate the most heat of the laptop, so I was thinking I can reduce heat by moving the HDD to right side (where its only contain the DVD drive). A matter of fact, the left side of the laptop is always hotter than the right side.
So, is there any body agree on that? Will the HDD fit on the right side ? If so, can u people help me on how I can move the HDD to the right side?
    thanks in advance ..

    Hi
Theoretically you can exchange the HDD and you can put in into the second HDD slot. It makes no difference if the computer boots from SATA1 port or SATA2 port.
But the interesting thing is that my girlfriend has Satellite A300 too but with 2 HDDs. Now I have looked into both HDD slots and the point is that the HDD chassis to fix it in the notebook (silver chassis) are different. That means you need the HDD chassis for the second slot.
You can get if from an authorized service provider.
Furthermore if your notebook is getting hot you should clean it. I do it every 3 months and always Im wondering how much dust come out.
I hope I could help you a little bit.

  • Help with this HDD issue

I own a macbook pro late 2009 with 250 gb seagate 5400 rpm.
I replaced it with a HDD hitachi 500 7200 rpm.
It never finished the mac os installation but when i connected it externally through a usb it did well and the install finishes succesfully.
And when i tried to use the old HDD everything seems to be ok !
Would like if any one would help as am depending on this laptop for many tasks.
    Thanks

I did everything regarding formating and installing but externally using a usb case, and whenever i tried internally it never finishes the installation process
OK. You placed the HDD in an external USB enclosure. Is that correct?
You installed the OS on the HDD in the external enclosure. Is that correct?
You removed the formatted HDD on which you installed the OS from the encosure and installed it in the computer. Is that correct?
whenever i tried internally it never finishes the installation process
You are trying to install to the HDD on which you previously installed the OS while in the USB enclosure? Is that right? If it is, why are you installing again when there is already an OS installed on the HDD? If this is not correct, can you tell me exactly what is going on?
And this is the second HDD that is having this problem, the other is seagate 500 7200 rpm.
I take this to mean that you tried the same procedure previously with the same results. Correct?
Here is how the process usually works.
    • install new HDD in enclosure
    • connect new HDD in enclosure to computer.
    • Boot computer from install disk holding down "C" and launch Disk Utility in Utilities menu.
    • Format and erase HDD in enclosure.
    • Quit Disk Utility.
    • Launch Installer and install OS.
    • Shut down computer.
    • Start up computer and immediately after chime hold down "Option" key.
    • Select newly formatted and installed HDD as boot drive
    • Click straight arrow.
    • Check installation to be sure everything is working ok.
    • Shut down computer.
    • Remove HDD from enclosure and install in computer.
    • Boot computer from new HDD and installation.

  • Replace HDD w/ Win 8 with new HDD w/Win 7

Just bought a HP Pavilion 17-e067cl Notebook PC from COSTCO. I want to remove the factory installed HDD with Win 8 and the factory load on it and replace it with a new HDD and load Win 7 on it
Is there anything in the BIOS that would prevent me from doing this? If so, can the settings be modded to accomplish my plan?
I intend to use an identical bare drive and load Win 7 on it.
Will a new, retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit Full System Builder License and Media, GFC 020250 (1 machine, 1 license) be the correct version of the OS install. I want Home Prem.
My intention is to keep the original HDD with Win 8 in case warranty issues arise in the future or will the motherboard marriage be a problem?

    ****Disclaimer*****
HP doesn't recommend the installation of Windows 7 on a computer shipped with Windows 8, nor will it support the installation of Windows 7. HP will not provide Windows 7 drivers and suitable drivers may not be available for the hardware in the computer. Also, Windows 7 may not support some of the hardware or software features designed for the computer.
Make sure you create your HP Recovery Discs or USB Flash Recovery media before modifying or changing ANYTHING... even if you are going to swap in a new HDD.
    You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and maybe ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the "BIOS Secure Boot cofiguration" on the settings page shown below, before you can attempt to install Windows 7;
    or
Some of the information below will vary depending on the HDD being partitioned as MBR or GPT, and/or booting the Windows 7 installation media as Legacy or UEFI.
Additionally, as the hard drive may be partitioned as GPT, you may have to boot the computer using the "UEFI - CD/DVD drive" or "UEFI - USB Flash drive" options in the "F9" boot menu. If "UEFI - CD/DVD drive",  "UEFI - USB Flash drive" or something to that effect doesn't exist in the boot menu, please post a screen shot and/or descibe the listed boot options.
I suggest using Windows 7 SP1 for the best intallation experience. If you need Windows SP1, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download and create your own Windows 7 SP1 disc. If the DVD refuses to boot as UEFI, you may need to use a USB Flash drive (may require DISABLING "Fast Boot" in the BIOS) as the installation media. Please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash drive. Please note that some computers may not recognize a valid UEFI enabled USB Flash drive if it is formated as NTFS and may require a FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive. You should be able to make a FAT32 formatted Windows 7 installation USB Flash drive using Rufus, UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or WiNToBootic. I like Rufus, as it has options for "GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer" and "FAT32".
Most of the Windows 7 drivers from the HP Pavilion g7z-2100 CTO Notebook PC Drivers page should work on your computer, however you may need to source some drivers directly from the chipset manufacturers's support sites.

  • Satellite M30 - How to replace hinges?

    Hello!
Has anyone replaced the hinges on Satellite M30? Any help or link to a manual would be helpful.
    Thnx!

I change the hinges one month ago. If I known it before, maybe can take photographs of the procedure. I tell, is very difficult. You need disassembly all the laptop parts (Except the .
First remove the power cord and the battery. Then remove the keyboard cover. Down the keyboard remove the all F8 and F6 labeled screws. Disconnect all the cables that you see and remove the keyboard. From Down the laptop: remove all F4, F10, F16 and B6 labeled screws. Now remove the HDD and ODD drives. Down of ODD you an S4 labeled screw, remove too. Now you can separate the black base from the grey top cover. The top cover is joined to the LCD for the hinges. Now you remove the four LCD screws from the LCD bezel. The screws is down the plastic covers. Only remove the four screws from the black LCD bezel. Remove the black LCD bezel. Remove the hinges covers. The hinges is joined to an metal base. You need to change all the metal base with the hinges. Can not change only the hinges.
