Satellite M35x-s349 - DVD-ROM Drive not reading

I have a Satellite M35x-s349. I got it around late 2004.
It had this problem for a few months and I had submitted to not being able to read or write cd's/dvd's because I couldn't find my recovery discs. When the whole comp crashed I renewed my efforts, found them, restored it with the help of an external HD case, backed up and restored my comp. It was working great. I burned cds and watched movies with no problems for a couple months.
Now it has stopped reading any kind of cd again. I put one in and the little disc flashes next to my cursor. I hear movement inside (both whirring and the eye moving) but after about 20 seconds it gives up and claims there is no disc in the drive. I don't want to have to do another system restore but I can't even read the Restore disc to reinstall the driver. Are there any thoughts on why this is happening if not any solutions? Any way to reinstall the driver online? I'm a mid-level comp user so I can understand most tech jargon you throw my way. I can usually solve my own problems but this one seems hopeless.
Any help is much appreciated.
-Tom

A friend of me has a Satellite M30x. As far as I know this is the same model as you have but for the European market.
His CD/DVD drive was faulty and had problems to read the disk. He bought a second hand drive from eBay and exchanged it by his self. Now it works again and exchanging the drive was pretty easy.

  • Satellite A200-23P - DVD-rom mechanic not working

I am sorry for my English in advance this topic! - Thanks
I have very big problem with my DVD writer (rom).
I bought SAT A200-23P three weeks ago.
The OS Win VISTA was installed. DVD-rom worked good.
If I installed Win XP to second partition on my HDD (before I make install disc with driver for sata disc in nlite) and installed all drivers and utilities for Toshiba notebook, I found that my DVD-rom does not respond while I press eject button.
DVD mechanic does not respond for eject in the XP and not even in BIOS!
Interesting is, DVD mechanic is detecting in BIOS, is detecting in XP, operating system XP votes - DVD mechanic working correctly - its fable.
However, if I installed XP on second partition, Win Vista does not load :(
I don't have a second chance for second selection (Vista and XP).
I have now XP only, even if Vista is on first partition - I didnt delete it.
Do you think the DVD-rom is HW or SW problem?
I think, seeing that DVD-rom not respond in BIOS - HW error.
But is very strange, if I install XP from DVD mechanic and close then is done, DVD-rom not working ... : (
If I open it manually and insert the disc, DVD not working (led diode not blink, just if I turn computer off, led blinked once).
    PLS help me somebody -
    THANKS!

    Hi Michal
Your issue is very strange I mean the CD/DVD drive issue
Fact is that the CD/DVD drives eject function should functions no matter what OS was installed on your notebook. It has nothing to do with your software on the HDD.
So I wonder why the eject button works with Vista and not with preinstalled XP OS ?:|
My only plausible explanation is that sometimes there is a loose connection between the notebook and the drive. At the other hand the issue could be related to the hardware problem too
As you see its not easy to say whats wrong exactly we can only speculate.
Now some details about your dual OS installation.
You cannot choose between the Windows XP and Vista because the Vista boot manager was overwritten during the Win XP installation.
This happened to me too. I have installed Win XP on my Satellite and was not able to start Vista.
The solution was easy; I have used another original Vista DVD (from my friend) and booted from this DVD. The Vista has renewed the boot manager and then I was able to boot the Vista.
Then I have downloaded the tool called Easy BCD.
This tool can change the settings the Vista boot manager. I have edited it and inserted a new Windwos XP OS entry.
    Thats it!

  • DVD Rom drive wont read media

    Hi!
I'm using a stock dv5-2135, and I'm experiencing several issues.  The first seems to be a serious CPU slowdown. I'm even getting a lag when typing.  After deciding to do a full restore, I have found the DVD Rom drive won't recognize any media, and won't burn.  If I can't get the drive to work, how the frak am I supposed to do a full restore?  Short of throwing this thing into the river, any suggestions on where to proceed?
    Thanks.

    Hi ChefJim27,
Take a look at this document - there is a troubleshooting document for CD/DVD Drive is not Detected (Windows 7) - take a look and try those steps and let me know if that helps resolve your issue.

  • Dvd-rom drive not working

i got a satellite 1805-S253 model with a toshiba dvd-rom sd-c2502 drive..now when i put a cd or dvd inside the drive..it sounds like its skipping..i check the driver on it and everything is updated..now when i click on the drive i get this message saying windows cannot read from disk the disk might be corrupted,or it could be using a format that is not compatable with windows?

Hi, if it fails with any CD or DVD here some ideas. The skipping or rubbing could mean it's not seating fully on the spindle (Which will let it read). The not reading could be dust on the laser eye (Try some canned air), it could be corrosion on the contacts where the CD/DVD plug's into the motherboard (Remove the drive and inspect, reinsert). I had two M2 combo drives that failed for no apparent reason and I tried the above and nothing. I pulled the drive again and looked at the plug that plugs into the MB and saw two screws in plastic frame around the connector. I took them out and wiggled it and it came off, it turned out to be an adaptor with a smaller connector on the back that plugged in the main part of the drive. I wiggled it back on and put the screws back and tried it and it worked like new on both of them. Who knew?

  • DVD-ROM drive not detected in WinXP

If you need to know my system specs, they're in my signature. Anyways...
For the past month, I've been struggling to get my new AMD64 up and running. First the processor was bad, then the board, AMD had sent the wrong processor (I bought an Athlon64 2800+, they had sent back an Athlon XP 2800+, which would have made me angry had they not upgraded me to 3000+ for the mixup :D).
Finally got my computer back and everything seemed to work, then I started having problems (a random device would lose power during regular operation, forcing me to reboot and have another problem). Went out, bought a new case with a 500w PSU. Gutted my old case, put all the stuff in the new case, turned it on, things were fine. I was able to load WinXP onto an SATA drive I bought with no problems.
After WinXP was finally installed (and I got all my stuff from the PATA HDD :P), I went to update all the drivers and such when I noticed that there was NO CD-ROM drive. I'm not sure what it could be; it's the only thing on the primary IDE channel and it's set as the Master, and it worked fine to actually install Windows XP, so I'm not all too sure why it's not showing up.
If you guys have any ideas on how I can make it show up, I'd be most appreciated.

I've tried all that, but it didn't do anything.
See, here's the thing: The BIOS can see the drive just fine; I can boot from and install WinXP just fine. Once the installation is finished, however, I can't see the drive in Windows anymore...it's almost like it's not there anymore. I checked the connections of the IDE cable, and even took out my 40GB drive to put the DVD-ROM on the 2nd IDE channel and that doesn't work. I can confidently say that both IDE cables work properly since the BIOS can always find the drives that are connected to it, and Windows was able to see the hard disk regardless of what IDE channel it was on. Nothing has worked though.
I am getting desperate at this point; I have 3 other computers that I need to work on, but before I can do that I need a working PC of my own. I'll take any ideas you guys can give me. :(

  • CD Rom drive not reading data or audio

    Hello -
I'm using a Fujitsu N series LifeBook laptop. I'd started having problems with my cd rom drive about 6 or so months ago. It reads dvd discs just fine, but is very "selective" about the audio cds i load. I got a palm pda for christmas and when i tried to load the sync software from the cdrom - the drive wouldn't read it at all. I tested other audio cds and have since found that the drive will no longer read any audio discs. Oddly, it reads dvd movies just fine - launching Windows Media Player as a default. I got in contact with Fujitsu tech support, and after uninstalling/reinstalling the cdrom, found the problem was still there. I was told to contact iTunes support because iTunes might be the culprit - but could only find these forums for help.
Cdrom drive is a TEAC DW-224E-B model. Please help - I'm a nursing student and plan on using the palm pda to store PDR's and Diagnosing guides.
    Thank you,

  • DVD RW drive not reading discs

Hey guys, I have a G61-210CA (HP Laptop) and the DVD RW drive no longers reads discs.  I have tried running the Mr Fix it tool which could not repair the problem.  I have tried uninstalling device from device manager and reinstalling it.  I have removed the upper and lower limits in an effort to solve the problem.  I am still having the same issue.  When I put in a disc it does not recognize disc.  The light comes on and the drive spins, it is just unable to read it.  Any suggestions?

    Replace the defective drive.

  • DVD/RW drive not reading DVDs

I have an HP Pavilion with Vista Home Premium 32 bit, with a LightScribe DVD/RW SuperMulti drive.  I am able to read/burn audio CD's (both commercial and CD-R/RW).  But, I have tried 4 different DVD movie discs, and every time, the drive spins and tries to read, but then nothing happens, and when I try to go to Start/Computer/DVD drive and "Explore" or "Open", the drive tray ejects and a window pops up saying "Please insert a disc".  So, it seems that the DVD/RW drive is simply not able to read DVD movie discs.  Any idea if this is a driver problem, or do I need to replace the DVD/RW drive?
    Thanks,

  • Satellite A200 -1VG - DVD RW Drive not working

    Hi all,
Pls i need some help with my laptop. The DVD drive on my computer is not working properly.. It plays DVDs and CDs, but when i try to burn CDs or install a new program with a CD it gets to like 97% then stops and an error message shows up. It sometimes says the message cannot Run due to some errors.
Also i keep getting disconnected off the internet every 10mins, please what can i do
Lastly i want to know if i can install winXP as i dont like vista. Thanks

When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).

  • DVD-R Drive not reading anything

I went to burn a DVD, and it gave me an unspecified error.
Now I can't get any disc to read. I can eject and load, and nothing.
I can't seem to boot to Mac Install either (Holding down C when rebooting)
    Thoughts?

    Ann S.,
I'm having problems similar to those of others with the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D [A606]. In my case, I can't read TDK DVD+R disks I burned on same burner and which for a long time had no problem reading. I'm going to try your earlier suggestion of doing an "archive & install" from the OS X Tiger install disk, as you described, and have a couple questions:
    1) With QuickTime 7.4.1 now the current version, after I download to the desktop the OS X 4.11 combo update, after unchecking the 7.3 update, and doing the permission repairs at each step, etc., should I then do a separate update directly via the System Prefs Software Update to update QuickTime all the way to 7.4.1, which is what I'm running now?
    2) I would also really appreciate any further wisdom you can offer regarding the following additional information — thanks in advance:
In October'07, I bought Toast Titanium 8 and thought my problem was solved (I was now once again able to read the TDK DVD+R's mentioned above with no problems after first discovering problems reading them in late '06). Then, this past January ('08) I purchased ReadDVD! to solve a problem I was having reading a UDF-formatted CD that had been burned on another machine. It may (or not) be coincidental, but within a couple weeks after installing ReadDVD!, the next time I tried to mount one of the aforementioned TDK disks — no luck. I haven't been able to read them since. Furthermore, I was then unable to confirm a successful uninstall of ReadDVD! (I DO NOT recommend this product) After contacting the manufacturer, I was told that as long as I had double-clicked the uninstall icon, it was successfully uninstalled, even though there was no apparent removal taking place at all, no install or uninstall logs to check, nothing showing up in the trash, right-clicking the uninstall icon showed it was only an alias with no path to the actual uninstaller, etc. SO, I don't have any idea what actually caused the primary problem to reappear — was it QuickTime 7.3, ReadDVD!, or something different still. I've tried reinstalling Toast 8, hoping it would overwrite whatever defaults ReadDVD! might have created. No luck. Again, any further advice this info might elicit would be much appreciated. Thanks, again.

  • DVD+R not reading back on some DVD-ROM drives

The recording device is the built-in SuperDrive on my iBook G4 1.42. I've been archiving copies of my photos to recordable DVD. It's usually 2 copies of each set - one in DVD+R and one in DVD-R. I store each set in a different place.
My preferred media is (Made in Japan) Taiyo-Yuden media sold under the FujiFilm and Sony label. So far, the spindles I've opened and used are the FujiFilm (8x-listed) DVD+R (regular silver label) and DVD-R (from the "Color Tower" package).
The DVD-R recordings seem to read back fine in most DVD-ROM drives I've tried. I have a circa 2001 PC with a DVD-ROM drive, and it doesn't read back the DVD+R copies. It'll just whirr for about 20 seconds and then just stop without the disc mounting. All DVD recordings seem to read back just fine on my iBook G3 600.
Are there any known problems with readback of DVD+R recorded from OS X on some DVD-ROM drives? I figure I'm eventually going to get an external drive that also records DVD+R (I'm thinking that would present the fewest compatibility problems) or a new machine (it's about time after five years).
    14 iBook G4 1.42 1.5GB (10.4.3), 12 iBook G3 600 640MB (10.3.9)

Just a note of interest. If your machine is 2001
vintage, my guess it doesn't like + media at all.
There are some reports that in some cases that these
older drives can read them sporaticlly at best, this
is normally caused by the poor quality of some
    manufactures.
It's a Sony VAIO desktop with a Pioneer DVD-ROM drive. I don't know about "quality" per se, but it probably finicky.
I find that using the best quality media eliminates
many problems. And I realise that it is more
expensive to use this media but in the long run it's
    worth the extra money.
Have a look at the Media Guide below.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    Cheers Don
Like I said - Taiyo Yuden all the way unless it's maybe sometime like video storage where it's no big deal. I just got three spindles of MIJ (had to look carefully for that) Sony 16x DVD-R for $12.99 each at CompUSA. They didn't have it on sale, but they price-matched the $12.99 price at Best Buy (my local store only had made in Taiwan stock). I was next to the manager at the customer service area, and she said I could have as many as I wanted at that price. If it were some expensive item, I think I would have been limited to one or two.

  • DVD-Rom drive in Satellite C655-S5128 not working properly in Windows 8

I recently upgraded my system from Windows 7 to Windows 8. However, the DVD-Rom drive after the upgrade no longer works properly -- it now treats the pre-recorded disk as if it was completely blank. I tried reinstalling the Toshiba Disc Creator, but that did not work.
    Any solution?

You apparently did not use the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant in upgrading to Windows 8.  See HERE for DVD and Disk Creator problems occurring during the upgrade and solutions.

  • My CD/DVD-rom drive won't read audio cd's

Since installing itunes on my laptop, the CD/DVD rom drive won't read audio cd's any more! However, it will read data CD's and dvds.
It didn't stop all at once...it started failing to read the odd random audio cd. Over time, gradually more and more CD's not recognised until no audio cd's readable at all!
When I say 'not recognised' I mean that if you look in the cd-rom file with a music disc inserted it thinks the drive is empty. The drive spins the disc a few times and then gives up. As only music cd's affected I suspect this is something to do with the itunes software. I've tried the various troubleshooting tips on itunes help but no joy....has anyone else had this problem / anyone know of a possible solution?
    Thanks
    Tiny

I had the same problem and I contacted a support team. They suggested that I upgrade my computer's power supply and I did. I had a 250W drive and now I have a 350W drive and it reads the CDs perfectly; except for one certain CD.
