Satellite M40: graphics performance unexpectedly decreased

Hi,
Some time ago I noticed that graphics performance of my M40 was unexpectedly decrased to about 50%(comparing scores from "3D Mark").
I haven't installed any software that could affect on it.
Nevertheless I reinstalled the system but don't see any improvement.
Can it be related to some hardware damage?

Hi
Different 3D mark provides different results.
Did you test your notebook with the same application?
How about the CPU temperature? Possibly the notebook runs with dynamic CPU frequent mode.
If the cooling modules cannot run with full performance because of the dust a debris the CPU decreases the frequent and doesnt run on high level.
You could change the dynamic CPU frequent mode from dynamically switchable to Always high.
Maybe you will notice some positive improvements.
greetings

  • Satellite M40: Graphic Errors when changing screen resolution

    Hi,
    I have a Satellite M40 and a big problem.
    in windows xp pro sp2:
when a program changes the screen resolution, the screen gets messed up,
I see only stripes and only a restart can get it back working (or suspend to disk).
    [edit]
I plugged an external monitor to the laptop and it works,
the laptop screen is full of lines and the 2nd monitor shows what the laptop screen should normally also show
    [/edit]
    in linux:
this can be also seen when changing from the xwindow mode in linux back to tty(1-6)
Here are some pictures of this strange behavior:

It looks like a hardware problem, but could it be just a wrong bios setting?
    What can I do?
Bye and thanks in advance, Ronny

I will try it with the Toshiba graphics driver, at the moment I use the newest Omega driver
I use 1280x800 as normal resolution
    programs giving this error:
world of warcraft (1024x768) -> working with 1280x800
    age of empires 2 (800x600)
as I said before, I get this problem also using Suse Linux when I switch from KDE to tty
thanks you too, hope we can get it working together :-)
    [edit]
strange, using the Toshiba display driver I got the problem at the first try (aoe2), but now it is not reproducable :-(

  • Graphic shared memory question - Vista on Satellite M40

I have Satellite M40-psm40 with ATI x300 and my OS is Vista. The card has 64mb memory and is taking 255MB with total of 319MB from the main RAM.
    How can i decrease it?
    * I have checked the BIOS to see if could decrease it , but nothing in the BIOS to change it.

    Hi
Bad news dude. You cannot increase/decrease this graphic card RAM!
The installed ATI MOBILITY RADEON supports own fix memory. It's not shared video ram.
There is no way to make the card more efficient.

  • Black screen on Satellite M40-185

After some months trouble with sudden switch-offs finally my Toshiba Satellite M40-185 got a black screen and it cannot do more. I have an external monitor but it also is black.
Should I try to get a new LCD inverter or let the Toshiba service get it and look at the motherboard?
    Perhaps its completely dead?
    Any help and suggestions welcome!
    Dimitris

    Hello Dimitris
If the result is the same on notebooks display and external monitor there is probably serious hardware problem and just service can help. I presume that graphic card is the troublemaker and I am afraid the mainboard must be exchanged.
Of course, I cannot say this for sure. Because of that let the technicians run diagnostic programs to see what is wrong with your notebook.

  • Satellite M40-133: startup issue after shutdown

When shutting down my Satellite M40-133 EN if I start it up again all I get is the Toshiba wellcome screen.
If it is left for some time it will startup as normal. When running it is quite warm.
    Please help.

For me it sounds like an issue related to the overheating.
It seems the notebook cannot start and boot properly due to a high internal temperature.
The main reason why a overheating issue happens is very simply.
The cooling modules dont work correctly. I think the dust and debris prevent the cooling fans from running with full performance.
A simply fan cleaning should help you.
From time to time I clean my ventilators too. I use a compressed air spray. Such sprays are very useful to get rid of dust and most computer/notebook dealers offer such sprays.
If it will not improve the situation then a notebook technician should disassemble the notebook and should clean it properly. Additionally he should renew the thermal grease which is placed between the CPU and cooling module, too.
    Good luck

  • Bizarre noises near the processor on Satellite M40

I have a notebook Satellite M40-243, I sent it to service under warranty for a problem of graphic display.
It returned yesterday, now it work good but the processor emits bizarre noises.
The warranty service doesn't want to fix that because "there isn't any disfonctionnements??!
    Listen these sounds: http://yang69.evoconcept.net/sounds/bruitsproc.mp3
    Is it normal?!
    I think no
(Sorry for my bad English :)

Its very strange sound but I dont think that comes from the CPU.
It sounds more like a Fan, CD drive or HDD.
However, this should be definitely checked Its not normal behaviour

  • Satellite M40-129 and Win7 Drivers

    Hi,
I just installed Win7 on my Toshiba Satellite M40-129. This was a really tough one... Windows refused to finish installation until I deleted pcmcia.sys in the windows system folder.
Now I have the problem that neither my pcmcia cardbus is working nor my SD-card reader. As soon as I ask Win7 to update PCMCIA driver, the computer doesnt start anymore till I again delete pcmcia.sys.
Now my question: I can live with having a not working pcmcia slot, but are there any drivers available for windows 7 and the SD-Cardbus?
    Thanks a lot.
    Technohead

    Hello,
I have windows 7 in my satellite m40-285 (PEntiun M 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM, Ati X300) and it runs smoothly.
The problem with pcmcia.sys is the same with vista you can find in google how to rename it.
The most difficoult was to make the graphic card work well with AERO, I had to install the diver for a Dell and update throw windows.
    Good luck!
I don't think the M40 series are too old if you have enough memory and a good CPU and GPU

  • [SOLVED] Graphics performance on AOA 150 netbook and composition

    Hello everyone.
First of all, I'm unsure is this post a bug report, a call for a help or a "how to". :-)
I'm using Arch on this netbook for 2 years now and I have to admit, that there is constant graphical performance slowdown with each version of xorg and xf86-video-intel increment (graphical controller is Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)). When I just had installed Arch, I'd had about 600 fps with glxgears (yes, I know, that glxgears is not a benchmark, but it's affected by all the same lags as overall graphical subsystem). As of few upgrades, fps became ~300. Then, when vsync was made necessary by Intel, I'd had ~60 fps. Now performance of graphical subsystem is extremely low -- ~25-30 fps. This slowdown affects both 3D and 2D, the gears in glxgears are rotating with pauses. The most interesting thing is the mouse activity influence. When I move the mouse during the test, fps increases. If I'll move mouse constantly during the test, I'll get ~60 fps.
For this two years I'd used different window managers and desktop environments in different combinations, but result was the same: desktop composition had always decreased fps rate. But with cairo-compmgr I'd got very strange result. If it's active, fps is constantly ~60 and gears are moving smoothly, no matters how I move the mouse. As for me, the main question is why is this happens and how this result can be achieved without any composition (cairo-compmgr is quiet buggy for now).
As of practical usage, now I use gnome3 in legacy mode (because of lags under mutter) with cairo-compmgr running, all it's visual effects are turned off. Fps is ~60.

  • Satellite M40-237: How to connect the mobile phone with Bluetooth

I have a new Noki 62333 and I have a Satellite Toshiba M40- 237. I have a big problem with the conection between them. I don t know how to turn on bluetooth on my pc. Can you help me????

    Hello Iva
A friend of mine has Satellite M40 and I know that this unit is delivered without BT module. If the unit has BT module you will find BT label on the bottom side of your notebook.
To establish BT connection with his mobile phone he uses BT USB stick.
By the way: does Iva comes from Zagreb, Croatia?

  • Improving graphics performance in DIAdem 11.0 Report?

    Dear Forum,
when working on a Report layout, the poor graphic performance of DIAdem is a real problem for me.
For example, many diagrams with lots of data are on one page. One opens the proficiencies of one of the diagrams and changes e.g. the curves color or whatever and closes the dialog window. After this, the whole Report page is refreshed - wich takes up to one minute, depending on the amount of data displayed.
The strange thing is, when I close the given dialog window, and while the report page is being refreshed sent DIAdem to the taskbar and open any other application window, the process of refreshing the screen takes only 1 second instead of 30 seconds.
The question is: Is there a tweak to improve the speed how DIAdem refreshes the report page? Or is there any workaround other than switching applications during refreshing?
    Thanks a lot.
    Greetings from Germany
    Oliver

    Hello Oliver,
The easiest way to speed up the graphics performance in Report with large data files (or 3D graphs with lots of nodes) is to turn off the "Data Layer" (German: "Datenebene") in the "View" menu (German: "Ansicht").
That function basically turns off the display of all data in Report, but retains the axis systems, texts, etc., so you can still move them, place them and edit them without having to guess sizes. Once you're done with the report, simply turn the data layer back on and you're ready to create a PDF, print or save the result as an image file (JPG, BMB, etc.).
I think the performance difference you described (1 vs. 30 seconds) is due to the fact that once DIAdem has drawn a page, it retains an image in memory and will simply draw that image when you bring DIAdem to the foreground (or maximize it). After any edits you make to the report (e.g. change the color of a graph), DIAdem redraws the complete page from scratch, which takes much longer then just re-displaying an image that has already been drawn previously. Someone from the DIAdem R&D team could probably do a better job explaining this, but I think this is the explanation for the time difference in drawing.
Anyway, the "Data Layer" trick should hopefully solve your problem, let us know if that works for you.

  • T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

    Hi everybody,
I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
    Anybody experience on this?
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

Did you try the 11.5 RST beta? Load up DPClat and see if DPC conditions are favorable.
What are you using to check graphics performance?

  • Satellite M40-256 - error while booting via CD

    Hello,
a well-known friend owns Satellite M40-256 which has Windows problem (error while updating/handling by her children).
She doesn't own an external Toshiba FDD or ODD. Also this portable has no built-in FDD. Buying one only for this issue? NO
The boot priority has been changed to: CD-network-HDD.
I've tried another non Toshiba branded ODD (in BIOS not mentioned/found)
The original ODD works/boots in another pc (via adapter) very great.
Ive tried several CD/DVDs to boot from (no error displayed): instant-Linux like knoppix, suse, other windows CDs, recovery CD, ... no success
Every time the same result: the laptop has a black screen, the ODD speeds up and after about 3 to 5 seconds windows starts with the black-white progress bar.
I also tried to press C to force booting from CD.
Some time ago, I had only access to windows in secured mode. But after uninstalling some updates it ends in a licence problem. This issue can be only solved by booting windows-cd via cd.
It has a Toshiba bios 1.00 (interesting, seems quite old).
I've trying at the moment to boot via network. Does the Toshiba show some messages about succeeding/failing at boot via network or CD?
Has setting the execution bit an influence on behaviour?
Does anybody know a solution booting windows?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for help.
I will look for an other ODD from Toshiba trying for boot.
Does the toshiba bios show messages about booting via cd or network? Even choosing network ends in a faulty Windows boot.
After choosing an item there's no message while booting
As I mentioned: the most interesting issue is ODD works/boots well via adapter in a normal pc and also after windows has been started (secured mode). But no boot possible.
I suspect meanwhile BIOS or Mainboard. But is there a chance for update in secured mode? (the only thing it starts is "secured with prompt"). Cats bites itself in tail.
BIOS also was saved with default setup. Nothing changed.
In event viewer I've found entry about probs with hard-drive and controller.
Does a destructive data processing influence the toshiba bios

  • Windows Vista Ultimate doesn't install on Satellite M40

Windows Vista Ultimate doesn't install on this notebook. Vista hangs after installation and doesn't boot up. Does anybody know what the problem is?

    Hello
As far as I know older units are not Vista supported. I believe it is not necessary to say why. Satellite M40 is older notebook model and definitely not Vista supported. Many newer WXP preinstalled notebooks are Vista supported but Toshiba has for each model designed new BIOS version and before installing Vista the BIOS update must be done at first.
I can imagine that new BIOS is needed for M40 too but as I said before this machine is not Vista supported. I am very interested if someone will report more about Vista on Satellite M40.

  • IMac 27 mid 2010 graphics performance issue

    Hi all
my iMac has a strange problem and I need to understand how to fix it.
First of all, this my configuration:
    iMac 27'' - 2.8 ghz - 12 Gb RAM - ATI 5750 1GB GDDR5, Mountain Lion 10.8.2
The problem is simple. After a while, the graphic performance slows down quickly with fluctuant speed (fast then slow, then fast...). I've noticed that in 3D games, in Photoshop and in other applications that uses GPU or intense graphics operations (also Finder animation like window animations)...
I can't understand if it's a hardware failure (but note that Apple made me an AHT just a couple of days ago, during the 1 Tb Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program and nothing was found) or a Software problem... But OSX is a fresh install, for example...
Is there a way to check GPU deeply?
Please help me, i'm really hopeless

It certainly sounds possible that your video card is failing.  You might want to reboot from your Original Installation Disk and run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or the Extended Apple Hardware Test to check for hardware failiure.. Other than that, time for a trip to the Apple Store for a check up.
    Hope this helps

  • Satellite M40-145: CD/DVD drive won't read some DVDs

    Hello!
I own a Satellite M40-145 purchased just over one year ago; the DVD driver worked perfectly until three days ago, but today I discovered something... peculiar. It still reads commercial DVDs and burned DVD+R, but apparently it doesn't read burned DVD-Rs anymore. I have tried with different DVD-Rs I burned through the same DVD player, with no success; trying to access the DVD yields a "insert disk in D: drive" message.
In this case, I'm talking about movies on DVDs. Please tell me there's a way to solve this without sending the computer to customer service...
I'd hate to think it broke down just days after the expiration date of the warranty.

    Hi
Well, you can try to remove the drive form the device manger.
After new reboot the drive should be recognized again. Check then if its possible to read the DVD-R CD.
But the issue sounds as a lens calibration error. If you use different media the lens must be calibrated again. But if this procedure fails, the drive is not able to read or write the DVD for example.
Unfortunately, in such cases only the drive replacement will solve this issue.
