Satellite M40 (PSM40A) - I had to reinstall XP 3 times

I think my memory is dying but Im not sure and Im not a computer expert by no means but here is what has been happening.
In the last 3 months I have had to reinstall Windows XP 3 times.
The first time the problems started happening was one day I went to start my computer and I got past the Windows logo screen and I got a message saying some system files were missing so I reinstalled.
The next time about a month down the track I kept getting cyclic redundancy check errors with music on my hard drive I couldnt play them when I went to play them my computer would freeze for about 1 min making a beeping sound about every 10 seconds or so, this then lead to the first problem I had so I had to reinstall again.
Then today I went to restart my computer and when it got to the Windows logo screen the computer started making a beeping noise and took about ten minutes to load and I got a message saying this (this request could not be preformed because of an I/O error this message appeared three time then my computer froze completed and I went to start and I couldnt even get past the Windows logo screen again so I did a complete reinstall of Windows and its working fine now?
Im pretty sure this sounds like a hard drive problem any ideas?

This is strange but you should test the RAM and HDD before you exchange something.
I can recommend two tools for this.
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
The Drive Fitness Test can test the HDD. Download the CD image, burn it on a CD and then start from it.
http://memtest86.com/
Memtest86 is a diagnostic tool for the RAM. There you can find a CD image too.
Use both tests and post your result.
I hope I could help you.

  • Satellite M40: installing Windows 7 Home Premium

    Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade my Satellite M40 (PSM40A-03K009) to Windows 7 Home Premium but towards the end of the installation, my notebook reboots and freezes up trying to start Windows 7.
I've rebooted in safe mode and it seems to be getting stuck loading \windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys.
I've tried everything I can think of: running start-up repair on installation disk, installing latest versions of drivers, updating BIOS, reformatting disk, etc but nothing seems to work.
    Can anybody help?
    Cheers
    Rob

    Thanks for your thoughts.
You're both probably right about it being too old (although it does have a 2GHz processor & 2GB RAM) but I thought it worth a try as I have a spare copy of Windows 7 and much prefer it to XP (I have it running on my newer Toshiba laptop).
I'll try a couple more things then restore XP if I can'?t crack the problem.
Any idea what CLASSPNP.SYS is meant to be controlling? It seems to have something to do with SCSI controller but I don'?t think this pc has any SCSI devices.
    Cheers, Rob

  • Satellite M40: Is failed BIOS update covered by warranty?

    Hello,
I own a satellite M40. I had some problem with it, and tried to update the bios to see if it could solved it.
I flash the bios with the windows based utility, but the computer shutted down without any warning.
Now the notebook power up only 1s or 2, and then power off.
I bought this Toshiba, 10 months ago. So, is a failed bios update outside of the warranty ?
    Thank you

    Hello,
There is one last thing you can try if you want before taking it to your ASP. If you have a usb floppy drive, download the traditional BIOS update for your computer and ready the floppy. Once it is ready, plug the floppy to the computer. Hold down the TAB key and power on the notebook (some models have this safety feature in case of failed bios update) and see if the LEDs start blinking green and orange. If so, then it is updating the bios, once they are steady, then it is done and you can try turning it on normally again. If it does not work, then its time to take it to your ASP.

  • Satellite M40: Hibernation mode doesn't work

    Hi all
My satellite M40 doesn't hibernate. If I choose the hibernation function, my screen tells me that the notebook is hibernating. But then after it doesn't shut down in hibernation, no it starts again! I can't hibernate! Standy mode functions! Few days ago, I had deinstalled by mistake "common modules", but then I reinstalled it. Could someone tell me which drivers are needed for hibernation?
Is it a driver problem? And why does Windows check my HD every other time I start my notebook. I didn't find any other problems then the hibernation and checking the HD. Do I have to deinstall all Toshiba drivers, including common modules and reinstall all of them again? Would it solve my problem? Or should I just try with a BIOS Update!
Best regards and thank you for your help!
    YLS

Hibernating doesn't have to do with any drivers from Toshiba or something else... Its a Windows XP functionality... Hybernate requires disk space as big as your RAM... Means -> 1 GB RAM needs at least 1 GB disk space...
Hibernation can be turned on and off in system control->energy options (or something like that... sorry got the german version :D would be systemsteuerung-> energieoptionen )
If the Toshiba tool is active, it takes control over "energy options" :D
    OK... Analysing your problem...
    you hybernate...
    windows crashes...
    windows reboots...
windows finds bad file clusters because of the crash... maybe "hiberfil.sys"...
Thats the File where your RAM is stored if Windows hibernates...
windows scans for bad sector, clusters and so on...
Your problem... Could be your RAM which doesnt work well with the system...
    OR
Theres a failure in "hiberfil.sys"... since you cant delete it manually, you have to turn off the hibernation, so that windows delete the file... Sometimes windows dont... just reboot after turning hibernation off and delete it manually...
    OR
    Your HD is full...
    OR
You HD has failures... try scandisk and defrag
    OR
The ultimate all problem solution -> Reinstall Windows XP SP2, make a Back up... BAck ups are great...
Just restore the backup and be happy... :) J
ust like reinstalling Windows, but faster... :D

  • Satellite M40-237: CD Boot not working + is USB flash drive boot possible

    *Model: Satellite M40-237 (PSM40E)*
I decided to reinstall windows, my hard drive is currently formatted. So as usual, boot from Windows CD is needed to start instalation but it simply won't boot. I never had problems like this, boot always worked. It is like there is no bootable CD in the drive (but it is bootable and it is working on another PC).
    - i have the latest BIOS
    - BIOS detects optical drive and everything is ok, HDD is primary ODD is secondary
    - i tried selecting boot priority with F12 and/or setting it from BIOS, but it won't work either way
What could be the problem here? Drive not working properly (i hope it is that and not something worse)? I had some problems with the drive i before (writing...), but it reads CD/DVD's normally and like i said boot was working fine before. I cleaned the lens a little, disconected it and put it back. Is there anything more i can do ?
I am trying to find someone who has the drive that fits so i can try with that one, but who knows when will that be.
Now, here is the second question i have related to this. Because my laptop is practically useless currently (i can't install anything), is it possible to boot from:
    a) external USB optical drive
    b) USB flash drive
Bios on this laptop has no USB boot option, it has HDD / CD / FDD / network. But I've red somewhere that FDD = USB if legacy emulation is enabled.
If that is correct i should just plug the USB drive and select FDD as boot option ? If i can't find USB optical drive, i was thinking of making USB bootable flash disk and copying windows xp installation on it. So once it boots into DOS i just start setup from the stick.
    tnx

First of all I have to say that the booting from USB flash memory (USB stick) is not possible and you shouldnt waste the time trying this.
Regarding your CD/DVD drive booting issue
Well, its really strange it sounds a little bit like a kind of master/slave/c-sel settings issue. But usually you should get a IDE (#0 or #1) error if one of the devices (HDD or ODD) would be not recognized ?:|
    The whole story sounds mysteriously
Maybe there is a firmware issue
Several months ago a friend of mine was not able to boot from the CD.
He entered the BIOS and set the BIOS back to the default settings.
    This helped
This is a suggestion but I really dont know if it helps.

  • Different issues on Satellite M40-185RU

    Ah, yeah, g'day.
I have started having quite a few problems recently with my M40-185RU. It originally came with a Russian version of windows because it was purchased in Kazakhstan, but that was replaced when I purchased it with a licensed English version and then all of the drivers reinstalled. Now it has worked happily for the past 18 months, but recently more and more functions have stopped working, of which I sort of have blamed various Microsoft updates. I figured I would try and reinstall all of the drivers in the recommended order, then the updates and see if that fixed the problem, but it hasn't.
Problems I have had are, aside from various drivers wanting to download and install in Russian because I am in Kazakhstan:
1)The infrared port stopped working, but I found the quickfix download for that - it still hasn't fixed it. Plus the driver only downloaded in Russian. (trying to download off UK site).
2)The dial up modem has just stopped working and I get an Error 633 code, although no settings have been changed for my modem. I have tried reinstalling the updated modem software, but it still doesn't work.
3)Bluetooth Stack drivers only download in Russian. (trying to download off UK site).
4)Soundmax Drivers only download in Russian (trying to download off UK site).
5)Wireless LAN drivers only wanted to download in Russian, so I didn't bother updating them.
6)Nokia PC Suite wont connect with a USB bluetooth, infrared, or even a blimen cable connection. I have reinstalled this several times, restarted etc etc, but no joy.
7)DVD/CD rom will no longer burn cd's, or even dvd's through Nero, or even the simple "drag & drop" function of Windows explorer.
several of the other drivers also only wanted to download in Russian as well, but as they were not that important I skipped them.
So I guess what I am really after is if anyone has any ideas on how I can fix my otherwise great notebook. While I would love to get everything fixed items 1,2,6 & 7 are the more important ones for me.
    TIA everyone.
    Keiran

Okay, I have managed to get the modem working again but uninstalling the modem software, uninstalling the nokia PC suite software, restarting, then reinstalling the modem software. So thankfully no more 633 error message on that one.

  • Satellite M40-256 - error while booting via CD

    Hello,
a well-known friend owns Satellite M40-256 which has Windows problem (error while updating/handling by her children).
She doesn't own an external Toshiba FDD or ODD. Also this portable has no built-in FDD. Buying one only for this issue? NO
The boot priority has been changed to: CD-network-HDD.
I've tried another non Toshiba branded ODD (in BIOS not mentioned/found)
The original ODD works/boots in another pc (via adapter) very great.
Ive tried several CD/DVDs to boot from (no error displayed): instant-Linux like knoppix, suse, other windows CDs, recovery CD, ... no success
Every time the same result: the laptop has a black screen, the ODD speeds up and after about 3 to 5 seconds windows starts with the black-white progress bar.
I also tried to press C to force booting from CD.
Some time ago, I had only access to windows in secured mode. But after uninstalling some updates it ends in a licence problem. This issue can be only solved by booting windows-cd via cd.
It has a Toshiba bios 1.00 (interesting, seems quite old).
I've trying at the moment to boot via network. Does the Toshiba show some messages about succeeding/failing at boot via network or CD?
Has setting the execution bit an influence on behaviour?
Does anybody know a solution booting windows?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for help.
I will look for an other ODD from Toshiba trying for boot.
Does the toshiba bios show messages about booting via cd or network? Even choosing network ends in a faulty Windows boot.
After choosing an item there's no message while booting
As I mentioned: the most interesting issue is ODD works/boots well via adapter in a normal pc and also after windows has been started (secured mode). But no boot possible.
I suspect meanwhile BIOS or Mainboard. But is there a chance for update in secured mode? (the only thing it starts is "secured with prompt"). Cats bites itself in tail.
BIOS also was saved with default setup. Nothing changed.
In event viewer I've found entry about probs with hard-drive and controller.
Does a destructive data processing influence the toshiba bios

  • Satellite M40 does not read from product Recovery DVD

    Hey all.
I have a bit of a problem that I hope someone can help me.
My Satellite M40 notebook fell while it was in the bag and the dvd drive stopped working .
I had it repaired and it plays cds but I can't get the recovery disk to work.
It opens but for some reason the files are unreadable.
When I try to press C after turning it on, the computer sounds like it is about to work but then the windows XP icon just appears.
Can anyone help or offer advice? I'd really appreciate

I just checked my dvd recording device Sonic and it is not there. The read me file and all are there but the actual program I cannot find. So do I need to download that?
The Sonic and other additional tools are placed only on the Additional Software CD which should be delivered together with the M40.
    >How do I know which firmware is compatible or goes with my dvd drive? How can I check?
As already said!!! The firmware could be found on the CD/DVD drive manufacturer site!
I dont know what drive you have bought and I dont know the drive details!

  • Unseen ESSId with special character - Satellite M40

    Hi,
I have a Satellite M40 with an atheros AR5005g wireless card.
I have a wireless network with WPA2-PSK encryption. The ssid looks like that : g4s8j6b-special character-o7v35s7gt3q1c6b8
With the latest driver it is impossible to see the ssid an to connect to this network.
I have tried an Atlantis USB Wireless adaptor and it can find the wirelessnetwork (I can not connect, because the USB Adapter does not supported WPA2-PSK)
For me it is a driver 's problem. How can i solve this problem ? This "special character " is not recognising from the drivers isn't it ? is it possible to convert the ssid in HEX code and to insert the ssid in HEX code and the key in HEX code in a data, to force the connection ? (manual connection like Linux)
    yours faithfully
Oh this forum does not support the character ... it looks like this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9F
    (Unicode U+00DF)

    Hi,
The ssid works with my other laptop (intel Wireless pro 3945 a/b/g) on Vista and Ubuntu (manual configuration).
The ssid can to be see with the atlantis usb wireless adapter.
    > {quote:title=[email protected] wrote:}{quote}
    > That SSID is very long. Have you tried using a shorter SSID?
For me that not the problem. On my other Laptop, before it works with my ubuntu system i had to make clean my driver's installation. Then I have converted the ssid and the wpa2-psk key in HEX code. That's why for me, it seems to be a driver's problem but it is not to find a solution anywhere.
How can i try to set up the ssid in HEX code and not ASCII with a win XP system ?
    Yours faithfully

  • Satellite M40-307: Accessibility utility doesn't work with limited user account

    Hello everybody,
I have got a Satellite M40-307 (PSM44E), and I have got a problem with the "accessibility" utility, that displays an icon in the Windows XP notification bar, to let the user know whether the "Fn" key is active or not.
That this utility would not work for the administrator would not worry me a lot, as the administrator is supposed to know what he does. But the limited user does not have access to it, this more bothering.
In an administrator session, this utility works pretty fine. But in a limited user session, if I try to launch it by [runas /user:admin "C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Windows Utilities\TACSPROP.exe"],
I am answered that the file TCMSVR.DLL cannot be found. If I launch it normally, a message tells me that this utility requires I am connected as an administrator.
So, what can I do to use this utility normally, i.e. in a limited user session*?

    Hello Markus,
    Did you read ?
I executed TACSPROP with the admin rights, and it does not run.
So, to follow you, I had a look, on TACSPROP.EXE and TACSPROP.DLL, the users had "read/execute" and "read" rights. I provided "full rights", and it solved nothing.
Obviously another program must be launched before, that is by default launched only by the administrator, and I am searching what program it is.
    Thank you.

  • Satellite M40 - SD card stuck in SD Card Reader

    Hi!
I have a Satellite M40 and today I had the bad idea to use the Toshiba SD card reader.
I inserted the card into the slot and it went deep into it. Trying to get it back only resulted in pushing it farther in.
Now the cards is aprox. 2cm inside the slot and there is no way to get it out.
This must be a joke. Please tell me where the secret button is to get that card out of there. I give up, really...
    Thanks,
    Fritz

    Hello
As far as I know Satellite M40 has not SD card slot but media slot and it supports different media cards. Of course you can not use all cards available on the market but just supported formats.
Zim wrote very good explanation how it works. Of course, with compatible cards only. Described issue can not happen with SD card. It is too big and can not come 2 cm inside the slot.
I am afraid you have used mini SD card. Am I right about that?
This card can not be used without proper adaptor.
Bad thing is that there is no secret button. :(

  • Satellite M40 - FN key not working on XP

    Hi everyone.
I have a Satellite M40 (which is M43 in Australia) model number: PSM43A-1100H, Running on a XP home edition.
The FN key is working but not functioning with others (F6,F7,F8 for screen brightness and wireless).
    I would appreciate any help.
    thanks in advance.
    Cheers
    Jax

As mentioned, try reinstalling Common Modules, and the other components that may be related to the keyboard.
If Windows has not been reinstalled for years, you might want to consider backing up your documents and running Recovery.
I myself do this on my laptop since Windows can get corrupted and slow after a while due to power losses, viruses, etc..

  • Satellite M40: USB Audio doesn't work properly in ACPI mode

    Hi all,
I just bought a Satellite M40 laptop which purpose will be to be used as a mobile audio system.
For that, USB audio devices are a great solution.
Unfortunately, although it was working properly while recording (sound is perfect with all USB Audio compliant devices I could test), there's an issue in Playback as I got lots of clicks and pops.
After lots of tryings and google searches, I fixed the problem by switching from ACPI computer to Standard PC mode.
    That's a workaround.
But this way, I don't know anymore what's my battery status, and my laptop do not shutdown automatically.
In fact, my laptop is no more managed as a laptop :(
I suspect a very serious issue in one of the Toshiba components management. Especially, I would not surprised to be told that power management leads to some regular short system freeze, and thus the 10ms USB audio buffers fall into underrun.
This would not bother me so much if I was not part of the technical support team of a company that is also launching some new USB audio products that will fail to work properly with laptops.
    My question is :
Is there any driver / bios update that gets rid of this issue ?
If someone from the Toshiba technical support wants to handle this issue directly with me, I would be pleased to help him, as I'm concerned professionnaly and personnaly.
    Thanks in advance.
    [Edited by: admin]

    Thanks for your help Jeffrey,
    But
    - I checked with several USB audio devices, from different providers. The issue is the same.
    - I checked with several applications (Winamp, MediaPlayer, ...). Same issue.
    - I checked these devices with different laptops (tried 3 different models) : I have NO PROBLEM.
    - The USB devices I use do not need external power supply. I tried EDIROL UA-25 which works perfectly in any case, but not with my TOSHIBA M40.
    - I agree that some application can disturb audio management. But in that case, I would like to know which one from the standard installation is the cause, so that I can fire it. It's anyway curious to see that switching from ACPI to Standard mode fixes the issue, as all applications are still there. I would say the applications are not the issue, then.
    - All Microsoft updates have already been installed
    - I think I tried everything that could be done by closing applications, changing power management modes, system cache, ...
    - I have no other hardware device connected/installed (printer or whatever)
    - RECORD works perfectly. So if some application layer was disturbing, I would bet it would bother in Play and Record as well.
CONCLUSION : Unless someone can prove it (and I'm ready for some testing), I still believe there's a harware/driver layer that is faulty in the Toshiba management.
And I don't need to contact the manufacturer, as I AM one of them :)
If you are part of the Toshiba support, let me know. Maybe we can investigate together.
FYI : I had to create a new user ID for this forum as it did not accept the one I created this morning anymore :(
    Thanks anyway.

  • Satellite M40: Win XP install after system crash- ser.number problem

    Hello there,
i would like to ask you what shall i do. I bought new toshiba satellite m40 laptop about 5 years ago in London.
There was no Win XP recovery cd (no recovery partition on hdd as well), just cd with toshiba drivers in the box. Now my system crashed.
Took me long time to figure out what it was. (BSOD - "not ACPI compliant") I tried almost everything even HDD format.
Later on i completely dismanteled laptop, cleaned the dust inside and it works again - no BSOD.
Now i need to install my WinXP back. So i downloaded WinXP service pack 3 cd-rom and tried to install it.
It wont take my serial number which i have on a sticker on my toshiba.
Please help me, what shall i do?
I paid for WinXP (system was included in price) and now i cannot use it.

Well, i was in London just few months when i bought that laptop. The guy in the store told me the box include everything - it was the way they got it. I didn't know how it works in London (well except the robb of in an exchange office on victoria train station first day and another one paying for a laptop in Computer store which had branches all around London and the company crashed and did not pay me back) and it was my first (delivered) laptop as well. Of course i asked why there is no Win XP cd (or recovery). I used to have many destops before starting with old good 386@20MHz. I was very well aware that i really need installation cd of windows, do remember loads of system crashes of Win95 and Win98. Maybe somebody took it out of the box, who knows. I am just 100% sure it was not there. So i reconciled myself with it, was a newbee there, didn't want to make problems. My fault. Another one was not buying recovery program (or use of that toshiba recovery creator) to make image of hdd. Those days imaging system was quite a new thing as well-at least for me. Few days ago I tried toshiba support web to find recovery cd, even e-bay, etc. to find and buy it. No chance. I can try to call Toshiba UK support centre, but i guess it will be the same answer.
You wrote your friend has got one as well, is it the type -225 ? Full name of it is: Toshiba satellite m40 -225. Different number means different hardware, but recovery cd of your friend might be compatible. Would it be possible to ask him to give/sale me an image of that disk? Toshiba support in my country cannot provide help or further info, is not comparable with the UK or US one. But thank you guys for answering me anyway! :-) Any idea welcomed.
EDIT: BSOD (not ACPI compliant) is unfortunatelly back, laptop works just in really cold (-10 C) environment. Restoration CD would be logical step to go.

Recently i had to re-install Windows Xp on my Satellite M40-107 DU (PSM40E). Everything went fine. At last I wanted to install the powersaver and I downloaded the latest version for my machine from the Toshiba web-site. Installing goes fine untill I press complete installation (voltooien).
A pop-up screen appears withe the message: Fatal error, this program will be ended. Code 0x7E.
After restarting the same message appears untill the powersaver is removed from the run tray.
    Who can help?
    regards
    @b

    Hi
It seems that there is no generally solution for this issue.
I have found and read some postings about the similar issue and it seems that the Toshiba recovery CD installation will eliminate the popup of this error message.
