Satellite P10-B02 PSP16E Shutting down

Hi there,
I have had the above laptop for about 3 years now and it has started to shut itself down quite often now.
Its not over heating.
I have tried to update the Bios online but I keep getting an error message about ROM size when I try and run the setup.exe file.
This is from the event log seconds before shutdown.
The same error is logged several times prior to shutdown.
Any ideas,
Kind regards,
David.

Hello there.
Let me ask you, but why do you think this is not an overheating issue? Already checked for any dust on the cooling vents?
Anyway, for your BIOS update problem, there is a simple solution.
After you have downloaded the BIOS update package, you will have to unpack this file first. If not, you will get the mentioned error message. So just unzip it, and start it again. This way you should be able to perform a BIOS update successfully.

  • Satellite P10 - start up/shut down are not working

I hope someone can help me. My Satellite P10 is having problems starting and shutting down.
When it starts up, it goes to a black screen with white wording, asking if I want to start windows normally, or in safe mode etc - it won't let me start it normally so I choose the option 'last good start up files' (or similar wording).
The pc then carries on starting up. I did a system restore but it's made no difference. Once it's started up, it's a lottery whether it's going to be ok, or whether it's in the process of crashing.
To shut down, I've got to push the off button, there's no other way it will shut down.
I've run avg, spybot, lavasoft adaware, xsoftspy, registry mechanic, spywareblaster etc but there doesn't seem to be anything 'wrong'.
The only thing I've installed recently is the new avg 7.5 and legacy family tree software - I downloaded both programmes from the manufacturers sites. Avg is free, although I might just have visited a crack site for the code for legacy :)
I would really appreciate it if anyone is kind enough to give me some advice :)

    Hi Joao
I have had a bit of luck so far - I downloaded a little executable which checks for trojans - I had been infected by ntrootkit. I managed to get rid of it (switch off system restore, run security software, edit registry & reboot) which has in turn sorted out the start up and shut down problems.
However, I'm still getting problems - when I start up, it's in the lap of the Gods whether I need to reboot before I can open my broadband software.
Also, when it's playing up like that, I get a 'beep' when I try to stop processes through task manager. I've got a horrible feeling that it's the motherboard. Once I've rebooted, it's fine again.
This is driving me nuts... if anyone has any ideas on this latest development, I'd be grateful!!

  • Satellite P10-804, machine shutted down suddenly

    hi all!
i bought my laptop 2 years ago and recently found that the laptop shut down suddenly without any notice.. not bcos of the virus as there's no symtom about that.
I'm not sure if the laptop is too hot or what reason caused the machine shut down. and as I'm now not living in UK and in my country, this model had not be launched so i cannot check the machine in my country.
if anyone had this problem or if anyone know the reason, please let me know! thanks!

  • Satellite 2710XDVD hangs at shut down

My Satellite 2710XDVD hangs at shut down, showing the 'Windows is shutting down' screen. I am running Windows 98 SE, bios 7.60. The problem started after installing a Sitecom WL-011v2 card.
When I remove the card (actually, disable it using the control panel pc card manager) Windows shuts down normally. Sitecom says it is a bios problem.
    Does anyone have a solution?

I came to the conclusion that the problem is that the PC card is not shut down properly when Windows wants to shut down.
My solution is to disable the PC card when I want to shut down Windows. I made a script using AutoIt v3 to do this, just click on the script and it will disable the PC card and then shut down Windows properly.

  • Satellite P10 - Notebook suddenly shuts off during application

My Satellite P10 has a problem since about 1 month. During several applications (for example games) it shuts off suddenly, without any message or comparable warning.
Is it possible, that it's getting to hot?
It worked without any problem for over a half year!
Could it be, that there's only some dirt in the ventilation? And can I clean it myself without any problems?
If I had a PC I would just open and clean it. But this is my first notebook and I don't have too much experience with the intereor of it.

    HI there,
I normally clean any dust from my A30 on a weekly basis, either by blowing through the outlet vents on the back of the notepad, or by using a domestic vacuium cleaner hose on the fan intake grills oin the bottom of the unit. This avoids having to remove the CPU heat sink which may invalidate your warranty.
I also make sure that the notepad is never placed directly onto carpets or cushions or other soft surfaces since this will either block the air intakes or provide a ready source of dust and debris which will get sucked into the unit.
There is a setting in the Device Manager to enable the cooling to be set for 'maximum performance' or 'Minimum noise'. The effect of the former is to allow the CPU to run at maximum speed (which may involve the fans running at their maximum, whereas the latter will cause the CPU to slow down when it is getting too hot thereby allowing the fans to run much more slowly. I believe the post from 'Heaven' related to a fauly chip on the mother-board which was making the fans run permanently.

  • Satellite L40 won't shut down with power connected, and won't go in standby

Hi everybody. I hope someone can help me. Basically, there are two problems: one with shutting the laptop (Satellite L40-17U (Vista 32-bit Home Premium SP1) ) down when the power is connected, and one with closing the lid and putting it to sleep.
    1. Since a few weeks, it suddenly doesn't want to shut down, whenever the power is connected. When it is on battery, it will shut down. When the power is connected and I try shutting it down, it seems like it shuts down (all activity ceases and the LEDs go off) for about 1 or 2 seconds, and then it goes back on.
    2. When I close the lid (all settings in Vista are set to put the laptop in 'sleep' status when the lid is closed) the laptop goes into a state from which it can only be recovered by shutting it down by pressing the on/off button for about 10 seconds to completely shut it down. When closing the lid, only the battery LED keeps blinking orange (the way it should be), but apparently the laptop keeps consuming power, because when I reboot it later (first having to shut it down as described above) the battery tends to be quite a emptier than it was before rebooting it (like going from 100% to 65% in 30 minutes, while being in 'sleep' state). Also, when I open the lid, the other LEDs do go on again (green), but nothing happens.
After rebooting by first pressing the on/off button for 10 seconds to shut it down, I frequently get a message that Windows could not be started, and have to run System Repair.
I've just done a completely clean installation with the product recovery CD (didn't install SP1 yet), upgraded the BIOS to v1.90, but the problem remains.
I'm afraid my only option will be to bring it away for a warranty repair, but knowing that these repairs can take weeks, I'd prefer to try a solution anyone here could recommend me first. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks,

    Hi guys
Never had such issue on my notebook but regarding to another users here in the forum the BIOS might help to solve such strange notebook behavior
To be honest the shut down issue is not known to me I noticed an standby issue on my notebook but the BIOS update helped.
Therefore I recommend updating the BIOS firstly.
If the issue will still appear, then the ASP should take a look into the notebook.
    Good luck

  • Re: Satellite A215-S7444 just shuts down after one hour of usage

    I have a satellite A215-S7444.
My problem is that while i'm on the computer after about an hour or so the computer just shuts down.
I have already tried changing the power manegment settings which worked for awhile but my laptop still turns off after awhile.

    Hi Patrick
Im quite sure that your notebook shuts down automatically due to the high temperature inside the notebook.
Its a simply overheating issue which could be caused by clogged cooling grilles.
From time to time its advisable to clean the ventilators. Mostly the dust prevents the cooling modules from properly working and therefore the temperature increases.
I made good experience with the compressed air spray. Such sprays can be purchased from many computer/notebook dealers.
Additionally you could try to google for some online offers too.

I bought Toshiba Satellite P505-S8950 model 4 months ago.
I notice my laptop shuts down intermitently while straming videos especiaaly in 'full screen' mode and while using skype with video chat.
My laptop is still under warranty and I have not created any back up since I bought. Now,

Please can anybody help to the system stable and help my experience while browsing more enjoyable?
    Thanks.

I have European Satellite P500 almost 2 months now and use it with original preinstalled Win7 home premium 64bit. I use it daily for work and some multimedia activities. I also use Skype almost daily.
Until now I didnt notice any similar problem.
It is not easy to discuss about such problems because none of us know how you have configured preinstalled OS, which applications do you use and if there is some software conflict that can be responsible for this.
Have you installed something that can be responsible for this behaviour?
To be honest I cannot imagine you have had this problem from the first day. Maybe you should install recovery image again using HDD recovery option.
I dont know what kind of back-up do you mean but what you can do is to start recovery DVD creation.

  • Satellite Pro U400-13D shuts down repeatedly

    Hi everyone,
I'm using the Satellite Pro U400-13D for office work only. During the last days the Notebook shuts itself down without warning during normal operation.
After a restart the problem reoccurs after a random duration.
Is this problem known? What can I do about it?
    Thanks,
    Alexander Lorenz

    Hi Alexander!
First of all welcome in forum! :)
Regarding your issue I have one question: Can you notice that the notebook is getting hot on the bottom side? I ask this because normally a notebook shuts down if its getting to hot and so it protects the hardware. Otherwise the hardware would be damaged due a higher internal temperature.
As Akuma said you buy compressed air spray. So you can clean the notebook and this blows the dust out from the cooling ventilators. Maybe it works for you.
Furthermore about cleaning a notebook I have founded an interesting article:

  • Satellite P750-02J - Not shutting down or hibernating

Ok so I bought a Satellite P750/02J just over a week ago and from the very beginning I was having trouble shutting it down. It goes through the process of shutting down as normal but once it reaches the blue 'shutting down' screen it freezes and it can stay like that for hours (even overnight!).
Also it wont got into hibernate properly either. Once I click on the hibernate button, it seems to be working and the screen goes black but thats all that happens. The fan is still running, the lights are still on and the keyboard is still responsive.
It seems to be fine if I havnt been using any programs but if I have previously had anything open, even if it has been exited properly it wont shut down or hibernate as it should.
Any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it??

    Hi Avery8,
May I ask you what operating system you use and is it the preinstalled Windows version from Toshiba?
The reason is that some background programs could block the shutdown process so at the moment I doubt it is hardware related issue. Interesting to know would if the same happens with factory settings (recovery installation).
Have you connected external devices expect AC adapter? If yes remove them and test it again.

  • Satellite A200 won't shut down when power supply is connected

The Satellite A200 just shuts down, if the power cable is disconnected before shutting down. Otherwise the notebook shuts down and restarts immediately (max 5 seconds between shut down and restart).
Does anybody got the same strange problem?

    Hi Thomas
You should definitely contact the ASP in your country. Maybe its something wrong with the power supply electronic on the notebooks motherboard.
As John said the replacement should be done for free because the A200 is a new series and the warranty should be valid.
    Good luck

  • Satellite P205d-S7454 randomly shuts down

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite P205d-S7454 laptop computer, and love it.
It has worked fine for the past ten months or so with no problems whatsoever.
However, yesterday while playing a videogame I've played on my computer many many times before, my computer just shut-off, no shutdown screen, it just turned off as if a power switch had been hit.
I turned it back on, it started to load windows, but then shut down again, I turned it on a third time, but nothing appeared on the screen, so I held the power button to turn it off.
After waiting a minute or so, I turned it back on, loaded up windows, and loaded my game up again, and after about ten minutes, it shut down again.
This is really frustrating, and I don't believe it should be happening.
If anyone can offer any help/advice, I would *really* appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello
I agree with Ross. It sounds like overheating issue. It is typical behavior when notebook hardware comes to critical temperature level. To avoid hardware damage notebook switches off without any warning.
When you use your notebook be sure the notebook cooling fans are not blocked and the notebook can be cooled properly. If you use your notebook intensively and for log time maybe is time for cleaning. You cannot imagine how many dust come inside of notebook.

  • Satellite C855-S5239 Keeps shutting down?

    Hello,
The laptop that my wife uses just keeps shutting down. I can get it to restart after some time when I remove all batteries and hold down power button. When it restarts it says that the rtc battery is low and when I proceed to the bios settup it shuts down after 30secs. I have replaced the rtc battery and it still says that it is low and then shuts down. I took the laptop completely apart and looked at the mother board. There are no swolen capacitors and no signs of overheating ( like spots on the board). I am usually pretty good at fixing this stuff but I am at a loss.
    Any Ideas.

Random shutdowns are hard to pinpoint. But if you get no software or OS errors other then probably a kernel power failure.
Then you most likely have a hardware failure. It could be something heating up and shutting down like a CPU that is reaching its thermo shutdown temp. I have a C855-S5245 and frankly in just one year I have had a HD failure, stick of RAM failing memory test and now the replace hard drive is showing signs of failure. Oh not to mention the Realtek WiFi is terrible, the hinges creak and the right touchpad button works intermittently. I guess maybe Toshiba has some quality issues with some models? Luckily mine still works and while my battery life in just one year has gone from 4 1/2 hours to 3 now that the warranty is up I will bear with it until it dies. Learned my lesson not to buy a cheap under $500 laptop.
