Satellite P10: black screen - only LEDs light

My laptop has given me some problems:
Problem 1 = doesn't recognise ANY blank dvds so i can't burn
Remedy - bought an external drive
Problem 2 = usb ports stop working even though the troubleshoot says thier all fine, searched numerous boards & followed various procedures but none works
Remedy - only able to buy & use firewire compatible devices
Problem 3 = My damn lighting doesn't work!
When i start up my leds are lit up & the fans running but my screen is pitch black!
If i get really really close to my screen i can just about makeout my screen name, sign-in, (hear the windows xp intro noise) & just about makeout the icons on my desktop.
I have searched the forum but found knowone with this problem or a remedy for it.
Are thier any techies hear that can offer any advice?
It would be much appreciated!

Its very sad to hear that
Problem 3 seems to be an Fl-inverter or display malfunction.
Did you try to connect the external monitor to the notebook?
Check if something will appear on second monitor and use the FN+F5 option for switching between the displays devices.
Problem 2; something like that could happens because the external USB devices were not safely disconnected. In such case you should remove the USB ports from the device manager. After the new notebook rebooting the OS will recognize the ports automatically. Mostly such procedure should helps.
Problem 1; this could be a calibration error. Every time the lens must be calibrate to read or write the medias. If the lens cannot calibrates the drive will be not able to handle the CD or DVD.

  • Satellite P505 black screen only on startup

I know there are a lot of black screen posts but I cannot find anything with quite the same problem we are facing.  We have a satellite P505-S8980 that only has trouble booting after it has been turned off for the night (or at least a good few hours). No problems with sleep, hibernate etc.
The system boots, we see the Toshiba screen, but where the login screen should be is a black screen with no cursor.  An external screen plugged in shows the login screen. After 3 or 4 restarts the screen works as normal.
Have tested the memory and the hard drive extensively and they also work perfectly in another P505. Any advice would be very much appreciated, the machine is great apart from this new problem.
    Thanks for your time.

Thanks Peter for your reply, I have been through both of those links before without any luck.
We have done a complete factory restore on this computer, tried the bios reset and all other listed suggestions.  There doesn't seem to be any error associated with this, as windows actually starts, then the screen goes black at the user login page.

  • Satellite P10: Black screen appears after 5min

Hi my name is colin, I have a Toshiba P10 laptop and I want to change my power settings ie.
My lap top blanks out after five mins if I do not use mouse but can't change settings because the panal is greyed out.
I use it for my karaoke but if a song is more than five min long blank screen. Tapping mouse pad restores it.
Can somebody please tell me what to do.
    Thanks colin.

    Hi Colin,
Sorry to hear that you still have the problem. My only suggestion now is that the Toshiba Power Management utility is not propwerly installed.
I presume that the system was re-installed after the new MB and HDD were fitted. Was this done from the recovery CDs or was it a Microsoft install CD ?
I would suggest removing the Toshiba Power Management utility from your notebook and then re-installing it (you can download it from the Toshiba web-site). Please make sure that you use the correct version (there are two) for your particular P10.

  • Blackberry Z10 won't turn on after software update. Black screen and LED light blinking

Im using BB Z10 (stl-100-1 ) os version 10.3.1 for 9 months, recent days it hangs a lot and  it hanged later  not turning on and red led has been blinking simultanously. please help me

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs. If it fails, please do it again but increase the step 4 wait time to 2 hours, and perhaps as long as 4-5 hours.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
Good luck and let us know!

  • IPad only has a black screen yet still lights up

My iPad 2 suddenly only has a black screen, however it lights up when home button or power button is pressed, but it is still a black screen!  How do I fix this?  Please Help!
I also have a game question but that is the least of my worries right now.

    Hi,
With the iPad turned on try a reset by holding down both the Home icon and power button together for about 10 seconds, you should then see an Apple logo in the middle of the screen.
Let us know how you get on, good luck.
    Regards,
    Steve

When I am on a call and I come to hang up, the phone which when to my ear has a black screen, starts to light up so I can see and click the hang up button, but it then blacks out intermittently and in the brief moments it is lit up, the hang up button doesn't work unless I press the home or lock buttons first

Wow- thanks Jim! I removed the case and voila... it worked. Knock on wood that you solved my problem with such an incredibly simple solution. I'll find out where this proximity sensor is and make sure my case does not interfere with it.
    Thanks so much.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 2.30 logout = black screen only

Are any of the rest of you that don't run a display manager getting a black screen only after logging out from version 2.30 of Gnome that just hit the repos?
This means no command line, no shutdown, no startx, or anything other than blackness. I have to reboot just to reach a command line again, then I can startx, or shutdown. Things worked fine before this, so I'm guessing it's a bug with one of the new packages.
If someone can confirm, I'll file a bug report.
    Thanks.
    Edit: added solved tag

  • Satellite L750 black screen on start up!

After using my new Laptop for three weeks (and only for 3 hours per day) suddenly one morning I pressed the start button and the only thing I got was a black screen with nothing else .No cursor , no sound , nothing at all , only black screen. Please I need help

I have the same problem with this Satellite L645-S4102.  No Toshiba splash logo on startup.  Just a black screen.  There were BSOD problems before I got this laptop but I can't even get the laptop to bootup to even try and repair it.  The laptop is out of warranty.  On startup, it checks for usb bootable or DVD bootable disc (lights come on, but that's it).  any help would be greatly appreciated.  I tried taking out the batteries and leaving it for over an hour, held the power button to drain any static electricity, then put the lithium battery and laptop battery in  and still get the same results.

  • Satellite T130 -Black screen- HDMI works perfectly

The problem started as a HDMI-cable was plugged into my running Satellite T130-17E and the screen was closed down. From that point the notebook screen stopped working. When booting the windows start-up logo is on for a couple of seconds and just before the entering the desktop the cursor is visible on the screen. But except from these short moments there is no action on the notebooks screen. When I reinstalled the driver to the graphic card there was some short moments (less than 0,5 sec) when the screen was active.
I can use the notebook without any problems via HDMI to my TV. And when I adjust the screens brightness (FN+F6/F7) the black screen can get more back-lighted.
When I turn off the HDMI-output or plugs it out - nothing happens on the notebooks screen.
Can some of you please try to help me out as I really need my notebook to work normal again. If you can help me sort out this problem I'll be very grateful-
    Kind Regards,
    Jacob Lindberg

When I use FN+F5 to use LCD only - there is a very short moment when i can see the dekstop on the notebook screen, but then it turns black again.
When I try to duplicate the output on HDMI and on the notebook screen - the notebook black is very backlighted when compared to the notebook screen when only the HDMI-output is used. When I switch between the different options on FN+F5 there is som very short moments when some the the notebook screen is active - but it is like a millisecond.
Is there any thing else I can do?

  • Satellite A200 - Black Screen Of Death

    Hi All,
I have a Satellite A200 model PSAFCA- 01K00J. This model I bought from Harvey Norman in Australia but I can find no listing on the Toshiba web site as either current or discontinued. That sux as I am looking to get any bios updates available to try and rectify a recent black screen issue.
The first time this occured I was able to re-start after removing the battery/disconnect power several times before it came good. The next day after a re-start attempt to install anti-virus updates same problem... disconnected power, removed battery, removed ram (replacing ram one then the other to check for faulty ram cards) and hard drive then bled off residual power with start button. Went through this proccess multiple times before eventually successfull. I have had to go through this a couple of times since after automatic re-starts for windows updates, etc. I have sourced the procedure for manually resetting the bios by jumping it but that is something I want to avoid doing until I have exhausted all other options.
    Toshiba Satellite A200
    Model- PSAFCA- 01K00J
    O/S- Vista
Hard Drive- 160GB with 50GB free space remaining.
System 32 with duo core proccesors.(intel)
    Bios Version/Date- phoenix technology's ltd 5.20, 25/10/2007
    SMBIOS Version- 2.4
Any idea's on sourcing the latest correct bios or any other input would be gratefully appreciated... :)

Hi Timox, when I turn on at the start button the lap top displays (lights up) the satellite logo and the small display at the bottom front (power on/battery connected and charging displays) and you can hear the extraction fan running as normal but there is just a black screen. I have tried to set up an external monitor... the only time that worked was when I was pressing f8 to go for a system repair/restore but the restore made no difference. Other than that the external monitor shows the same black screen as the lap top.
Given that the bios controls the start up I would have assumed that would be the logical place to look (haven't tried the f2/escape deal yet) so curious as to whats leading you away from the bios ?
I am trying to get to the bottom of this by process of elimination so if you have any other tricks I can try first I would love to hear them... thanks in advance :)
Found a link for an old review of this model... Yet Toshiba doesn't list it for updates (grumble)

  • Laptop blank screen flashing led lights

The HP dv7 laptop blank/black screen with the continuously flashing CapsLk & Num Lock led lights is probably indicative of an overheated graphics processing unit (gpu) on the system/mother board. On the one that I am trying to repair it is an ATI gpu.  The gpu is built into the system/mother board.
If laptop gpu is failing then the blinking diagnostic code of the CapsLk & Num lock led lights blinking once would seem to apply. Why even though led lights are flashing continuously? Because the laptop boot tries to load through the gpu via the cpu and fails which thereby triggers the one flashing light then it retries flashing the light again (and again and again continuously).  As other posters have commented HP did not seem to care about a design flaw so they hesitate and ignore that fact – they will often tell you that the system/mother board needs replacement. As a matter of record you can see another thread (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Blinking-caps-and-num-lock-lights/m-p/29560#M3853) that has 19 pages of posts with over 230,00 views – unfortunately it has been deemed read only by the HP forum now.
I would refrain from an exact duplicate replacement motherboard without proof that the gpu has been corrected on the replacement board.  Ebay has a number of replacement system/mother boards that are less than the over $300 price that HP has quoted for the repair.  There has even been a listing for an upgraded board that deals specifically with the gpu issue.  If the laptop has 17” monitor like the dv7 it may be very well worth replacing the system/mother board.

I have a little more to add
If I turn it on normally, nothing happens on the memory stick (no lights or anything)
If I turn it on while holding down Windows and B, the memory stick turns on after about 15-20 seconds, the light flashes for about 5 seconds then it stops flashing, it just sits on a solid light.
Its almost as if it is searching the memory stick for the files but fails to find them.
I used sp65000.exe to create the recovery stick

  • Why do the circles around the numbers on the lock screen only sometimes light up?

I don't know why, but sometimes, they light up as white circles, but other times, only the ones near to the centre of the wallpaper light up, and only the parts nearest to the centre of the screen. That'll be to do with the wallpaper itself, as it's got a bit of a white bit in the centre and black everywhere else - but why do the circles only sometimes light up? And is there a way to make it so the circles are always lit up?

    Hello DanteAllege,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like the keys on the passcode lock screen dont light up consistently.
I want to recommend a couple of things here. First close all the apps that are running on the phone:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
    Then restart the phone:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Take care,
    Sterling
