Satellite P10 shutdown suddenly

I have sudden shutdown problem with my Satellite P10....and no new BIOS update available.
Is there somebody who can help me??

Hi
How old is your notebook and when does it shut down? Possibly during running of some heavy applications?
Several times ago my notebook did shut down because the temperature was too high.
Someone here in the forum has suggested to clean the fans and cooling module with the vacuum cleaner. I did it because my notebook is a little bit older. Because of dust and debris the fans didnt run properly and the temperature is increased to the critical level.
The OS shut down the notebook to prevent from the damage.
I think you should check this possibility.
Also the corrupted software could be a reason for automatically shut downs. Mostly the new OS installation can help to solve such issues.

  • Satellite P10 - Notebook suddenly shuts off during application

My Satellite P10 has a problem since about 1 month. During several applications (for example games) it shuts off suddenly, without any message or comparable warning.
Is it possible, that it's getting to hot?
It worked without any problem for over a half year!
Could it be, that there's only some dirt in the ventilation? And can I clean it myself without any problems?
If I had a PC I would just open and clean it. But this is my first notebook and I don't have too much experience with the intereor of it.

    HI there,
I normally clean any dust from my A30 on a weekly basis, either by blowing through the outlet vents on the back of the notepad, or by using a domestic vacuium cleaner hose on the fan intake grills oin the bottom of the unit. This avoids having to remove the CPU heat sink which may invalidate your warranty.
I also make sure that the notepad is never placed directly onto carpets or cushions or other soft surfaces since this will either block the air intakes or provide a ready source of dust and debris which will get sucked into the unit.
There is a setting in the Device Manager to enable the cooling to be set for 'maximum performance' or 'Minimum noise'. The effect of the former is to allow the CPU to run at maximum speed (which may involve the fans running at their maximum, whereas the latter will cause the CPU to slow down when it is getting too hot thereby allowing the fans to run much more slowly. I believe the post from 'Heaven' related to a fauly chip on the mother-board which was making the fans run permanently.

    Hi BC,
A series of beeps (usually in a pattern of long and short) usually indicate a problem with the main-board in your notebook. Unfortunately, there is no published documentation about the beep pattern to assist with interpretation so the usual advice is to refer the notebook to an authorised service agent who can run diagnostic tests against the notebook.
The normal boot sequence is to run a POST to check the viability of the system basic components followed by the BIOS load and then finally the operating system. The symptoms you are experiencing indicate a problem in the POST, but without suitable diagnostic equipment it would be difficult to pinpoint exactly.

  • Satellite P10 PSP10E shutdown and the light stays on

    Hello,
    I'm having a few troubles with my old (2004) Satellite P10 PSP10E-0SCM7-FR
One day it simply shut down (as if out of power, no BSOD) and the power button as well as the led for the WIFI and CD/DVD stay on.
Most of the time I cannot turn it back on as the power buton still is on. (Power button, WIFI and CD/DVD are on).
I've tried to take the battery out and unplug the computer for at least 30mm
I've tried to press the start button for a while (a minute) then unplug everyting (Power cord + battery) for at least 30 mn before to turn it back on
I've reinitialzed the computer using therecovery CD provided with the computer
I've removed the heatsink, cleaned it as well as the fan then put back some new thermal grease
    I've changed the memory
Yet I still have the same problem, for some unknown reason, the computer simply shutdown and the light stays on. On occasion, the power light do go off, and I'm able to start the computer again. But I'm unable to understand what makes the computer shut itself down, or when that happens, what makes turns the power light off and make it possible to start the computer again.
Any idea of what's going on ?
Could the power button and light being turned on be an error message?
If so, what does it means ?
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks !
    Damien
the lights stay on even when taking the battery off and unpliging it to a while (30mm to an hour)

Hi PauPau and thanks for your help !
I'm a bit disapointed, I was hoping it was something that could fairly easily be fixed.
    :o|
Since the computer is about 10 years old, I'll certainly won't have it fixed as I'm affraid it would cost way too much. For a ltitle while i thought about getting another used P10 in order to get some spare parts to fix my computer. But I guess this is going to be much too complicated for me and might cost me a lot with no inssurance that I'll ever get it fixed.
I guess I should better save some money and buy a new one.
I'll stay subscribed to this thread... if anyone has an idea on what could be the problem, please post here. Thanks.

  • SD card doesn't work after XP SP3 install on Satellite P10

I have a Satellite P10, which has a built in SD card reader. I got Windows XP SP3 from Microsoft update a few days ago, and suddenly the card reader couldn't see any SD card larger than 128MB. It was listed in device manager with a exclamation mark by it - and didn't show up as a removable drive in My Computer. Error message was "Device cannot start - Error Code 10"
I uninstalled SP3 , and it works again. I've tracked it down to this hotfix which is included in SP3:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428/
If I install this on it's own I get the same symptoms, and uninstalling it cures it again.
So for the time being I can't install SP3. Does anybody know if it's possible to remove a single hotfix from a service pack?
    thanks
    Doug.

With a little help from MS support I've fixed this issue. In this hopes that it helps someone else, this is what I did.
    1. Uninstall SP3, and reboot into SP2.
    2. Copy the following files from c:\windows\system32\drivers to somewhere safe: sdbus.sys, sffdisk.sys, sffp_sd.sys. I put them on my desktop. They should all be version 6.0.4061.1
    3. Install SP3, and reboot.
    4. Shutdown, and restart using F8 to go into Safe Mode.
    5. Log in as Administrator (or another account with admin rights)
    6. In C:\windows\system32\drivers rename each of sdbus.sys, sffdisk.sys and sffp_sd.sys.to have a .old extension.
    7. Copy the files you saved in step 2 to c:\windows\systems32\drivers
    8. Shutdown and restart normally.
And that's it. Hope that helps.
    regards
    Doug.

  • Satellite P10-832--- Shuts Down

    Hi
From a couple of weeks my Satellite P10 shuts down suddenly
    It happens with
    1)Battery
    2)AC adapter
    3)Battery + AC adapter
    Why?
I downloaded a bios update but it's always the same
I formatted about 3 times, without doing any internet connections (someone said to me it could be a virus from internet), but it shuts down even if the O.S. is just formatted and empty (with an antivirus)
I checked my CPU temperatures and I saw that it could shuts down at 36C or 39...or work at the best at 43C!
(so I escluded a temperature problem)
But I saw that when the CPU USAGE goes over the 50% the machine stays for a couple of seconds, or minutes (if I'm lucky!)...then shut downs once again!
The same problem happens to one of my friend, with the same computer!
I can't play any videogames or do any complete scan with my antivirus of because the CPU USAGE goes over the 50%!
    Is it an hardware problem?
    Thanks
    Jacopo
(Also have Win XP H.E.\SP2\Norton Antivirus 2004\Zone Alarm Firewall\Microsoft Anti-Spyware)
    (Sorry for my rude English!)

    Hi again
Xaver is correct. Yesterday I've used a can of compressed air and was able to blow a lot of dust from the cooling system of my laptop. Then I placed the 'cleaner' laptop onto the USB cooler I had purchased and I launched a complete scan with McAfee. Well it went through without crashing. Then I launched a game (Battlefield) which was making the laptop to shutdown after a couple minutes, and I was able to play for a full hour before I decided that the test was conclusive.
My next step is either to find the appropriate screwdriver and proceed to clean the cooling unit more thoroughly or simply bring the filthy beast to a store that would do it for me.
Cheers and happy spring cleaning !

  • Satellite P10-554 shuts down after few minutes and I can not reboot

    hello,
i hope anybody can help me with my satellite P10-554
when i start the notebook everything works fine a few minutes. than the monitor turns into black and the notebooks shuts down suddenly. i cannot reboot it, when i push the start-button nothing happens.
i have to wait for about an hour and then i can start it up again, but he works just a minute and shuts down again !
help me please, cause i need my notebook to work !

I did that many times. First you need a special torx-screwdriver. Then you can remove the cover over the fans. Than take your vacuum-cleaner and remove the dust. Take a brush or somethin else to remove the dust from the fans. Then, you need to remove I think 2 big screws, now you should hold the cooling falance in your hands, the one with the fans. Clean that properly.
After that you can remove the copper-cooler, with 2 more screws I think, but it is pretty obviously. Now you should see the blank cpu with lots of heat-paste on it. I dont know why they put so much of this stuff on it from toshiba. So get a better one like Arctic-Silver or sth. My advice is to take the CPU off (one screw on top as far as I remember) and clean the surface.
The copper you can clean under water, but dont use sth that could scratch the surface. After that let it dry good. Now just put the CPU back and fix it with the screw again. Take a !litte! heat paste and put it properly with a paper all over the surface of the CPU, but remember, just a little! Then follow all steps back, dont forget to clean the graphics-chip as well and put some paste on it. You can see which it is when you look under the fan-cooling-falance, there should be a rest of heat-paste. Everything back to its place and voil*, a nice, cool clean notebook. By the way, I replaced even the fans.
If you need further advice, just ask!

  • Satellite P10, internal keyboard: The pipe key doesn't work anymore

    Hello everybody!
    I have a Satellite P10 with WinXP(SP1) for ca. 1 year.
Symptoms: It's about the internal keyboard. I've used the pipe key <|> indeed not everyday, but it worked. And suddenly I see that it's not doing anymore: it's "dead", whereas all other keys are working properly...
    My following steps:
    1) I've deinstalled the standard keyboard driver (101/102 keys) or Microsoft Natural Keyboard (PS/2), and it was successfully found after Windows starting up. There is no hardware conflict according to the Device Manager or System Information, the driver is running properly...
    2) The keyboard layout is German. But I've tested already the English (US) one too: the result is the same.
    Questions:
    1) Is the key physically damaged?
    2) If not, what can I do to fix the problem? Where can I get maybe a newer driver?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Mischa
If you can not use the button at all I assume that the button is defective. It is not known to me that driver update can has influence on just several buttons.
If the unit is about 1 year old the warranty is still valid. You can contact service partner and let them exchange the keyboard.
    Bye

  • Satellite P10-802: What was new in sound driver update

There are new sound drivers for Satellite P10-802 which claim to add sound features such as 3d enhancement and software synthesizer and i would like to know what these actually do and if it's effective enough to bother updating.
For example the sound system is made by toshiba bass enhancement but when i put in my very costly bass earphones,
My cd player [produces atleast 5x more bass and clarity.
So i would like to know what the driver has to offer as to what the standard driver can do.
The driver description is as follows:-
A broad range of audio controls are possible by using this sound driver, including: Software Synthesizer, Microphone volume, 3D enhancement and Power management
    thanks

Sounds much information to me already.
Updating is mostly a good thing and they remain the same standard sound driver, just with some new features.
Ok, I'll take a lokk at it.
3d enhancement: Seems like when using a complete surround sound speaker set was improved, maybe it added more settings like distance between front and rear or delay from rear speakers as you would have like using an expensive stereo receiver.
Software synthesizer is a little tweaking of how music for example sounds. IF you wish more bass or treble than you could adjust ist with this program.
I don't know if you need those features, so you have to decide on your own.

  • Satellite P10-504 - Slow system start

Hi again, help if you can.
My laptop takes good 8 minutes to get to the point when I can use it. Yet it only takes just over a minute to bring up all my desk top icons. The problem is the blue bar at the bottom, that's what takes the time to load, there's only 4 to load when desktop opens the only one is present and that is the speaker icon [vol control] the other three wireless icon, and the local area icon ,and windows one care icon, takes an age to come on.
I went into start up items and not knowing what to stop. I tick them all to not start but still it takes about eight minutes. Sometimes longer to fully operate, whilst I am waiting the blue disk light is full on. Any ideas appreciated.
I do use uni blue ,reg cleaner along with one care, neither at start up.
    Thanks Colin
    XP Professinoal SP3 and Satellite P10 504

    Hey sido,
I also dont know why it takes 8 minutes until you can use your notebook but normally such problems are caused due the installed software and many programs start up folder.
You should remove all programs from start up folder that you dont need and check also msconfig (Start > run > msconfig). There you can also disable some start up programs that you dont need.
Furthermore uninstall all applications that you dont need and clean the registry using CCleaner.
If nothing does work you should reinstall Windows using Toshiba recovery disk. After recovery installation it should take 1 or 2 minutes until you can use notebook.
    Greets
PS: Disk defragmentation is also useful ;)

  • Satellite P10-221, problem hotkey Fn F5

On my Toshiba Satellite P10-221, running WinXP, I used to be able to use Fn F5 to switch to my external display. Recently pressing Fn F5 brings up the same menu as always, but the only option is the LCD display. I used to have CRT and TV as options. Is anyone familiar with this problem? I already tried to install the Display Driver (Nvidia), but this did not solve the problem.
    Thanks in advance!

The external display is connected properly (and does work on toshiba notebooks of my colleagues), so I guess that's not the problem. Besides, the menu always showed more options (CRT/TV), apart from just LCD, even if there was no external display connected. Furthermore I upgraded the display driver, because that was the advice of the Toshiba Helpdesk (and also the only thing they could come up with). So I really don't know how to fix it.

  • Satellite P10-804: HDD Issue SMART WARNING

When I start up or reboot I get a message:
SMART: HDD Failure Is Imminent - Back Up And Replace HDD - Press F1 To Continue
Not the exact wording, though more or less correct.
This started 3 days ago. Basic online research suggests that the SMART warning system is not always correct.
    1. Is there any software which will check the HDD and correct some errors ?
    2. If I need to replace the HDD, what are the specs it can be replaced with ?
    3. What is the largest Gig size it can take ?
    4. What is the process, after replacement to use the Restore CD ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
In an effort to help users avoid data loss, drive manufacturers are now incorporating logic into their drives that acts as an "early warning system" for pending drive problems. This system is called Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART).
The hard disk's integrated controller works with various sensors to monitor various aspects of the drive's performance, determines from this information if the drive is behaving normally or not, and makes available status information to software that probes the drive and look at it.
In your case it is possible that the HDD will be dead early or later.
    The Satellite P10-814 was delivered with a IDE (ATA-5) 60GB HDD 4200rpm .
I think the 80 GB should also work on the unit but I'm not 100% sure about that.
After HDD replacing (not very difficult) you should only boot up from the CD.
Then the notebook will start to install the Toshiba image.

  • Satellite P10 - start up/shut down are not working

I hope someone can help me. My Satellite P10 is having problems starting and shutting down.
When it starts up, it goes to a black screen with white wording, asking if I want to start windows normally, or in safe mode etc - it won't let me start it normally so I choose the option 'last good start up files' (or similar wording).
The pc then carries on starting up. I did a system restore but it's made no difference. Once it's started up, it's a lottery whether it's going to be ok, or whether it's in the process of crashing.
To shut down, I've got to push the off button, there's no other way it will shut down.
I've run avg, spybot, lavasoft adaware, xsoftspy, registry mechanic, spywareblaster etc but there doesn't seem to be anything 'wrong'.
The only thing I've installed recently is the new avg 7.5 and legacy family tree software - I downloaded both programmes from the manufacturers sites. Avg is free, although I might just have visited a crack site for the code for legacy :)
I would really appreciate it if anyone is kind enough to give me some advice :)

    Hi Joao
I have had a bit of luck so far - I downloaded a little executable which checks for trojans - I had been infected by ntrootkit. I managed to get rid of it (switch off system restore, run security software, edit registry & reboot) which has in turn sorted out the start up and shut down problems.
However, I'm still getting problems - when I start up, it's in the lap of the Gods whether I need to reboot before I can open my broadband software.
Also, when it's playing up like that, I get a 'beep' when I try to stop processes through task manager. I've got a horrible feeling that it's the motherboard. Once I've rebooted, it's fine again.
This is driving me nuts... if anyone has any ideas on this latest development, I'd be grateful!!

  • Satellite P10 - trouble with grafic adapter

    Hi,
When starting my Satellite P10 - 554 today, the display showed unsorted colored pixels all around the screen. The BIOS message appears fully normal. After booting into the graphical mode, starting windows XP, the screen keeps being black.
The hard disk works fine. I've checked the display. It's working fine.
I guess the graphic adapter (geforce go 5600) is damaged. Any chance getting my notebook fixed? Do I need a new mainboard, or is there any possibility replacing the graphic adapter? Where can I get the needed parts, used or unused? What do the "exchange parts" cost? Better buy a new notebook?
Thanks a lot for your help.
    Steven from Germany, Duisburg.

    Hi
    >Any chance getting my notebook fixed? Do I need a new main board, or is there any possibility replacing the graphic adapter? Where can I get the needed parts, used or unused? What do the "exchange parts" cost? Better buy a new notebook?
Are you 100% sure that the graphic card is dead? This can be checked very easily.
You could connect the external monitor to the notebook and could check if the same appears on the external monitor too. If the same fault would appear on the external monitor then the GPU could be really faulty.
In such case the whole motherboard must be changed and such procedure costs a little fortune because the motherboard is on of the expansive notebook parts. You should calculate 300-350 euro
So maybe an second hand board could be a alternative.
    greetings

  • Installation of extermal TV tuner PA3334U-1TVN on Satellite P10

I have a Toshiba Satellite P10. I also have a Toshiba External TV tuner Model No. PA3334U-1TVN.
Can someone tell me how it is connected to the notebook?
It appears that I am missing a wire that connects the Turner to the computer but I don't have a diagram that shows me the configuration.
Can someone tell me how this thing is setup or where I can find the manual on line that will tell me how to install it.
    Thanks!

    Hi
Ive googled a little bit but didnt find any information about this external TV tuner.
But it seems that this TV tuner supports the USB interface and must be connected to the notebooks USB port.
I have found this small pdf document with the connection diagram:
