Satellite p20 dvd-rw drive

My drive doesnt read cd and dvds anymore.
how can i solve this problem?
it is a software problem or hardware problem?
i tried to buy the product from shops but all seems that doesn't have it.
can anyone help me please?

Hi Douglas,
Unfortunately it is very difficult to diagnose this type of problem remotely since I have no information about the history of the drive or the notebook.
Have you tried running the troubleshooter (device manager) against the drive and if so what was the result ?
Have you tried removing the drive from device manager and then rebooting the notebook so that the system will see the drive as a new device and re-install it with the correct drivers ?
What application are you using to read DVDs/CDs and have you tried different applications ?
Finally have you tried to Google for a replacement drive (you can find the model number from device manager or by displaying your BIOS settings)? Toshiba use a range of different makes and models in their notebooks so it is not easy for anyone to locate a replacement drive for you without knowing which one you have installed.

  • Satellite M100 - DVD-Multi-Drive not recognized as CD/DVD recorder (!)

    Hello,
after installing Win XP SP3 in the last windows update, the Toshiba tools as well as other CD/DVD-burning software don't recognize the DVD-ram drive as such, only as a CD-rom-drive.
Thus, software like recordIt doesn't work.
I have already removed the drive from the hardware list and have reinstalled it.
    The driver used is "Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-841S"
That is correct, so far. But it doesn't burning CDs/DVDs.
Has anyone noticed this problem as well?
    Thanks.

    Hi
I think its a lower upper filter issue and I think you could solve this following this step by step instruction.
First of all remove the ODD (CD/DVD) drive from the list in device manager.
Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Finally you should reboot the unit.
After that windows will recognize the ODD again

Any ideas of what i can do without having to send off the computer to Toshiba for repairs ??

    Hi
Do you talk about Active SMART hard disk status analyzer? If you want to reinstall OS on your notebook, use Recovery CD. Put Recovery CD into DVD device. Start the notebook and press down C key. After that follow the instructions on the screen.

  • Satellite P20: Great graphic driver trick for FX GO52000 and Vista!

    Hi Everyone
I did an upgrade on my P20 from XP to Vista. I ran into a bunch of performance issues regarding the display driver. Basically the FX G05200 wasn't up to the job, so several features (Aero) and applications wouldn't work.
However, if you manually update the driver, search locally and use the Microsoft WMMD drivers, hey guess what, the system finds an extra 64MB of share memory to use and your graphics cards rating goes up from a 1 to a 2.0 (gaming graphics goes to a 2.5). All of a sudden everything in Vista works!!!!
Hope this is useful to everyone.

    P.S.

    Hi
Im sure it could be useful for everyone who tries to install the Vista on the own notebook.
Its nice to have users who help and share the knowledge with us.

  • Satellite M40 - DVD / CD Drive problems - reading as well as writing

My M40-704 has developed an annoying habit of not recognising some DVD disks, and also some CD. This is not related to the quality is very hard to track down what exactly is causing it. I have the TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD R6112 drive. On another Tosh I have for work (a Tecra) I have an NEC drive which is working fine. I am perplexed and annoyed.
At present I can't read any blank or written to DVD/R is the most annoying issue.... Is this just a rubbish drive? Am I expecting too much? Yours confused

    Hi
I have read on some websites that some 3rd burning applications or DVD copy locks could have a bad influence on reading and burning medias.
But this is a suggestion and not 100% sure if it's your case.
The other possibility is that you drive is dead and only the drive replacement will solve you issue.

  • Is it possible to install Win XP on Satellite P20 w/o DVD drive?

Hi, I'm new to this support forum, but I'm hoping you can help with my problem.
Windows has become corrupt on my Satellite P20-521, yet I'm unable to use the Recovery Disc as the DVD drive has ceased functioning. I was wondering if there is any other possible method for installing the OS onto my laptop without the need for the drive. I have gotten to a stage where the harddrive is essentially formatted (due to placing the HD into another laptop and performing a windows boot that formatted and copied windows install data, however, this hasn't worked in terms of installing windows).
Thank you in advance for any help you may provide.

Okay, thanks for the help and suggestions guys. With the info you gave me, I managed to think out the most awkward and roundabout method possible. I've noted it down so that others may attempt to do so in the future if they so desire.
    Process to install Windows:
Transfer HDD from Toshiba Satellite (Comp A) to Dell Latitude (Comp B)
Copy the 'i386' folder from the Windows XP CD to a USB Memory Stick
Use a DOS CD to boot into DOS on Comp B
Delete all partitions and create 2gb FAT16 partition
    Format C: Drive
    Install DOS to HDD ('XCOPY A: C:\DOS' & 'SYS A: C:')
    Remove DOS CD
    Restart
Test booting into DOS (if it doesn't work, repeat steps above or find method to remove the MBR)
    Restart
Use 'Damn Small Linux' live CD to boot into Linux
Mount HDA1 (Harddrive FAT16 partition) and SDA1 (USB Memory Stick)
Transfer the 'i386' folder from SDA1 to HDA1 using File Manager
    Restart
(Optional: Activate 'smartdrive.exe' in DOS if it's available)
Activate 'WINNT.EXE' from within i386 folder
    Follow Windows XP Installation procedure
(Note: somefiles may not be found when it's in the copying stage, this may be due to the version of Windows XP you copied the i386 folder from)
Warning! Can take numerous hours to complete without 'smartdrive.exe'.
For me, due to the only readily available disc being an 'upgraded' XP (came with lots of tools and service packs allready installed for convenience) install disc, I found files 'missing' during the file copying stage prior to actual Windows installation:
    ieframe.dll.mui
    msfeedsbs.dll
The files are part of Internet Explorer 7, and are neither crucial to installation nor the running of Windows XP.

    Hello Martin
On this forum I have found few interesting topics about ODD replacement on Satellite P20. It seems to be that TEAC DV-W22E drive is perfect for ODD replacement. It is DVD-RAM ODD and you will have DVD burner with RAM function.

  • Is it possible to install a HD-DVD drive on a Satellite P20

    Hi Everyone
Is it possible to install a HD-DVD drive on my P20?
My screen has died, so I'm going to use this machine as a dedicated Media Centre attached to my TV.
If I can install a HD-DVD drive it would help a lot.
    Regards
    Richard

Well, I dont believe that you will be able to use a new HD drive or blue ray drive on this notebook but who knows everything depends on the master / slave and c-sel settings.
Its possible to change such settings on external desktop drives by switching the jumper but something like that is not possible on slim line internal drivesusually the firmware controls this settings on notebooks drives.
It seems nobody tried upgrade the P20 with such drive that because this is a new technology and at this time you will not find many internal HD or Blue Ray drives on the market.
However, please come back and report if you have more info about the upgrade.

  • DVD-R recording/burning problem on Satellite P20

I have a Satellite P20 notebook with a Multi Dvd-RAM drive (which should support both DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD/RW discs for recording). I'm experiencing some difficulties recording data to DVD-R discs - basically when I insert a blank DVD-R the D drive is not even accessable.
I have tried recording to a DVD-RAM disc which worked fine (went through the usual procedure of turning off regular CD recording etc) so it only seems to be DVD-R's which are the problem.
    any ideas people?

You should check if the recording function in the drive properties is enabled.

  • Satellite P20 after burning the DVD is not readable

  • DVD/CD Drive not working on Satellite L55

I have a Satellite L55 laptop with DVD/CD drive that I've used successfully to burn CDs in the past. Yesterday, I tried to view a DVD given to me by a friend and all it did was click and nothing happened. No error message other than telling me there was no DVD in the drive.
This morning, I put in a CD and same thing happened. You can hear the drive whirr a bit but then there are little repeated clicking noises and nothing. iTunes told me to put in a blank CD (the CD shows as blank in other drives), and if I look at Windows Explorer, it tells me to put in a DVD.
I've taken a quick look at the driver and it tells me that everything is working properly. If I tell Windows (8.1) to update the driver, it tells me it's the latest driver.
As far as I know, nothing has happened physically to the drive, beyond being opened accidentally on occasion when moving the laptop since the open button just happens to be in the right position for that to happen when you lift up the laptop.
Any ideas as to what I can try to do to see if the drive is truly dead before attempting to replace it?
    Thanks,
    Marie

  • Satellite A210-12U - DVD RW Drive will recognise DVDs but not CDs

I've got a 4yr-old Toshiba Satellite laptop (Model: A210-12U) which I recently restored using the recovery CD - it's running Vista SP2.
Please bear with me as this may be a long-ish story, but it helps to explain my problem.
Around a year ago, a virus made its way onto my laptop and almost destroyed the OS - I'd consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable software-wise having studied IT at college, and so set about the long process of trying to fix my laptop without resorting to the recovery CD.
It was a patch job, but after a month or so I had it working again and it was fine for a further few months or so, before I noticed that my DVD RW Drive would no longer read and/or burn CDs. I spent hours trawling internet forums for help without any luck and was subsequently convinced that it was a hardware problem.
As I needed to use a CD burner, my cousin lent me his USB DVD RW drive and this didn't work, meaning that logic suggested it wasn't a physical problem with the drive, rather that it was more likely a problem with the registry/OS. This wasn't surprising seeing as I'd done a basic patch job following the virus infection a few months earlier.
After becoming increasingly frustrated with my laptop in general, I backed up my data onto a portable HD and used the recovery CD which came with my laptop. The laptop booted the CD up when it was outside of the OS (as per the instructions that came with it) and restored the entire computer to its original state (and solving a lot of the problems that were caused by the virus in the process).
I've spent the last week re-installing programs, copying back data etc. and was in the process of installing some software from a CD today, when I noticed that the laptop was having difficulties accessing the drive. Windows Explorer knows the drive is there; it is listed in "My Computer" and will also have the little CD icon alongside the pointer when it is trying to load the CD up - suggesting it knows there is a CD in there.
However, the drive itself will still read DVDs which suggests it could be a physical problem with the drive itself (I read somewhere about the laser having to change its angle accordingly when reading CDs and DVDs). I question this however, as the computer was able to read the recovery CD when I was in the process of a complete restore (and it was having the same difficulties reading CDs in Windows before the restore).
I've tried all the methods suggested in similar posts on this forum - Microsoft Fix It, Uninstalling the drivers etc. to no avail... So yes, I am pretty much stumped and am wondering if anyone can help?
The DVD RW Drive is listed in the Device Manager as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA Device.
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Hi Ben
In my opinion it is hardware related issue. You are right about lens position. It must be calibrated for CDs and also for DVD. If the optical disc drive cannot read one of these medias in general it can be lens calibration problem.
To be honest ODDs for this old A210 are not expensive anymore. I recommend you to buy new one or used one on eBay. Exchange it and test the functionality.
To be honest I dont believe there is some trick that can help you to get it working again.

  • Dvd Rom Drive in a Satellite 4030 cds???

I have an old Toshiba Satellite 4030 cds.I would like to know if i am able to install a dvd rom drive into this laptop. If yes which models would fit this machine.
    Thank You
    PB

    Hi Breck,
in my opinion there is no way to upgrade the internal CD Drive to a DVD Drive because the CD Drive is fixed mounted and could only replaced by the same model!
Only an external solution like USB or PCMCIA would fit!
    Sorry!

  • Satellite P20 - copying CDs and DVDs

I recently had a problem with Windows on my Toshiba Satellite P20 laptop. I ended up having to use the Toshiba recovery disk which came with the laptop and have slowly started to get things back to normal. However, I wanted to set up the facility that would allow me to copy my CDs and DVDs.
I must have done this in the past when I bought the laptop 2 years ago but am having trouble setting it up now. If the laptop came with a CD/DVD writer would they have supplied the software as well? I can't find it on any disks at all which came with the laptop or should I assume I installed the software separately of my own device. I can't even remember what it was called.

    Hi,
I found out that this was installed by factory defaults on some P20 models:
    Drag'n Drop CDRW Software V3.00.259
DVD Fun STUDIO (for creating titles etc. on a DVD and for writing on DVD-R (but not on DVD-RAM or DVD-RW))
If you have one of these models, this should also be included on the recovery disc.
But as Jeffrey says I would also prefer burning software like Nero.
    Bye
