Satellite P30-145: drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs

I have a Satellite P30-145 with a DVD SupermultiDL drive. When I first got the PC I could write dual layer DVDs without any problems. Now the drive will not recognise dual layer DVDs at all. Even ones from the same box that worked fine previously. I'm using Verbatim Double Layer DVD+R 2.4x discs.
After much searching on the internet I downloaded and ran DVDInfoPro. This application reported that the drive did not support DVD+RW DL. Very strange!!
Can anyone help? The drive is a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-831S.

Hi Lan
This drive is definitely DL one but I can just imagine that drive is defective and can not calibrate lens in the right position. This notebook model is more that two years old and if you have used this drive intensively I can really imagine that DL function is defective.
What you can do is to clean the lens and see it this will help.

The diagnosits can see the drive under 'Optical drive detected' and passes all the tests but it does not show up under 'Devices' (on the left hand panel).  I've tried repair under Control Pane/Uninstall a program (twice) removed and re-installed iTunes.  I don't believe the problem lies with my drive OR Windows as the drive is visable in all my other programs (Windows Media Player, Windows Explorer, RealPlayer + all my other software that can access a drive.

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:
Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

  • Will iTunes recognize dual layer DVDs/drives for backing up purchases?

If I have a dual layer dvd in a drive that supports dual layer burning, will itunes be able to use it to its fullest capacity?

    DaddyPaycheck,
Just after i posted my message i thought i'd pop in a DL DVD in the drive, open Toast and see again what Toast would do.
Lo and behold, i check disk capacity in Toast and it shows the full 8GB. So i'm currently copying a 6GB DV file to the DL DVD ... so far so good. I want to see if it completes the task this time without errors.
I'll know within 15 minutes whether it worked. Holding my breath ....

  • My USB Super Drive will not Play Red Box DVDs, Why?

Can anyone explain why my USB super drive will not play RedBox DVDs?

What Mac are you using with the USB SuperDrive?
Is this USB SuperDrive a third party drive or Apple's USB SuperDrive?
If this optical drive is Apple's own external USB SuperDrive, this only works with newer Macs that have no built-in optical drive any longer and WILL NOT work with older Macs that came with built-in optical drives.
Is the Red Box DVD a standard DVD or Blu-Ray DVD disc?

  • Optical drive won't burn dual layer dvd

Yes, mine is capable of burning Dual layer dvds. It was the $1299 Core 2 Duo version 1 rev. ago. Got it in October. In the System Profiler it says DVD-Write: +R DL.
So, I stick a +R DL disk in there, and every time I go to write to it, the disc gets spit out and it says please insert a blank dvd. Now, you might think I'm inserting full DVD+r DL disks, however, that's impossible, because this is my only dvd writer I own and there is no way every disk in my pack came out of the box full of data.
Is there a brand that is guaranteed to work, does just my optical drive suck, or do all optical drives in macbooks suck and it's just a silly joke? I've seen quite a few threads claiming their dual layer writers don't work.

I'm also having difficulties burning DL discs. I'm using Toast Titanium 7.1.2 and I just got done with 30+ minutes of burn time only to receive an error stating "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR; Sense Code = 0x02; NO SEEK COMPLETE"
I've been trying to use Windata DVD+R DL discs and I've got a nice collection of coasters so far. Is this something I should use my AppleCare to try to address, or is this a media issue?
I have experienced the EXACT same problem using Memorex DVD+R DL discs (not my fave), so I do not believe this has anything to do with the brand of discs.

  • Will it burn dual layer DVDs

Is it possible to burn (for example iPhoto backup or iDVD) onto the big 8GB dual layer DVDs using my iBook?
I have a 14inch one with a Superdrive which I bought last September. I think it is the same as the ones currently on sale.

The short answer, I think, is no. See replies here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=404207&tstart=15 and here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=260421&tstart=105

  • Satellite A660 - DVD drive will not recognise some DVDs

    I have a new Satellite A660-17E with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N drive, running Windows 7 64 bit.
The drive will read most DVDs. Commercial DVDs (region 2) are fine. However, there are problems with DVDs recorded using DVD recorders. DVD+R recordings using a Philips machine work fine. DVD+R and DVD-R using a Sony HDX RDR 1095 machine do not work.
I'm hoping that the drive is ok and that this issue can be resolved by adjusting some setting or other?
    Any ideas?

It is most likely the issue is with the brand of dvd's you record with. as stated in the manual not all brands of recordable media are guaranteed to work with the dvd drive.
Also the sony recorder, i had a similar problem when playing the recorded dvd on another dvd machine, i found by adding a little more recorded info from the other machine onto the dvd it played fine after that. If you use DVD+R on the sony , record something on the laptop to the same dvd and then see if the dvd will play on the laptop.

  • Satellite L40 - recovery disc will not BOOD from CD/DVD drive

    Hi guys!!
I am trying to use the recovery disc on my friends laptop...but it will not boot up at all from the CD/DVD drive ... I have been trying for two days..... Have checked the BIOS settings
    1. CD/DVD drive
    2.hdd
    3.network.
have pressed the F12 key at start up as the recovery disc instructions suggests....this brings the boot up screen asking where to boot from...I select CD/DVD drive.... the drive makes a few noises and then after around a minute and a half...the Vista log on screen appears as usual. I have also tried starting up and pressing C but the same thing happens, just keeps loading Vista log on screen.
I have seen this is a common problem whilst researching the net but I have not seen a viable suggestion to fix.
Whilst going thru some user setting in Vista Im positive I seen a boot option that could be changed there and Im sure that hdd was selected.... did I dream this??
Im exhausted guys ...any suggestions pleaaaase x

Turns out the disc wasnt in 100% ..looked fine ..but when i pushed round all of the disc ..it made a tiny snap noise..and that was what the problem was...have also discovered...its an equium machine not a satellite.. system is in great shape now :-)

  • IDVD will not burn dual layer disc correctly.

I have an iMac9,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz with 8 gigs of ram, with a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S DVD-writable to -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW. It will not spit out a properly formated disc from IDVD. I get the "Supported disc not available" message, even though I have encoded it for dual layer in NTSC.
Has anyone ever experience problems with this? If so, what did you do to resolve it? I've burned through a half a dozen dual layer disc and these are still not supercheap.
    TommyBoye

Yes I called and my warranty was up so the nerd on the other end tried to sell me the applecare protection program. I guess my next step is to go to an apple store, but as the person that replied last in that discussion said time is an issue. I guess my biggest problem with this whole thing is that it is obviously the update that messed up all of these superdrives, so warranty shouldn't be an issue. Apple even removed the download link: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070716082804520&query=superdrive

  • CD drive will not load any CD/DVD inseted

For the past week my powerbook just started rejecting any cd I tried to load into the drive. Essentially this is what happens.. I insert a cd, it takes a few moments trying to read/load it, it never comes up in Finder, and then it ejects the CD just as it would normally. I haven't found a true consensus here on the discussion board or on the internet as to what might be the problem or a solution.
Here is what is unlike many other posts on cd drive issues, below are the problem I'm not having-
The cd does not eject abnormally, the cd does not have any problems inserting into the slot drive, There is not difference between cd/dvd or whether clean/dirty or between factory cds verus burnt cds.
Please help and make suggestions asto what I can do. Though my plan is that when I get time, I will take it to the closest apple store to see what the techs can do.
    Thanks

It's probably hardware related, but I did once have this problem which turned out to be some third party software I had installed (a kernel module that disabled the startup-chime, I forget its name). So do double-check any software you may have recently installed.

    Hi,
I had this problem too and tries various fixes suggested on the forums. One magic tipp worked for my case. In some thread some user claimed a seldomly used drive may have mechanical problems with cds.
    My problem:
I got a brand new refurbished powerbook and only read so far dvds, all ok. Today I wanted to rip an audio cd. I took 6 different normal audio cds, cleaned various of them, none worked and was ejected within 10 sec without any prompt. Strange enough an empty cdr would be taken and showed as empty...
    My workaround:
I created a burn folder and filled it up with mp3s. Just to below 700MB. I used a normal CDR 700MB and burned it at high speed. It aborted with an error.
I reinserted the disc and the drive tried really hard to read the disk and made unpleasant sounds. Finally it swallowed the just burned disc. With the disk utility I checked the disc, knowing it will report and error and it did.
I removed the disk, and then it took audio CDs which I can now enjoy and listen.
What I tried before (and did not help):
    1. Reset some stuff:
    a) PRAM and NVRAM
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    b) PMU
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    2. Delete some preference files:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=581490
    3. tried to do what is in the following Quote, but I did not find the file, maybe others will
    "Dave,
if just AudioCDs cause trouble im most cases a corrupted CD Info.cidb file in Users/Home/Library/Preferences is the culprit: Move it to your desktop + restart: If your problem is solved delete the old file."
    GOOD LUCK FOR YOU

  • Satellite C655D-S5303 will not boot from cd/dvd drive

I have already set the boot order in the BIOS to boot from cd/dvd drive first and it still goes straight to the HDD and starts Windows 7. I searched for this problem and found some people saying to switch it to CSM boot or disable secure boot but none of these options are available in the BIOS. I have it set to normal boot instead of fast so thats not the problem. Can anyone help me here? I am trying to reformat and reinstall Windows 7. I know the Windows 7 installation disk I have is good because I have used it in another computer and the cd/dvd drive works fine. I just can't get it to boot from the cd/dvd drive before the HDD.

Try setting the HDD to lowest boot priority. See Dave's solution in this message.
It's certainly easier to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All the drivers and utilities are preinstalled in the proper order. Windows is preactivated.
If you failed to burn recovery discs, you can obtain recovery media from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here
For instructions, see the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 76 of the User's Guide.

The same suggestion you can find here in this posting:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=17212&messageID=62862
PS: If you use or have installed two burning applications on the OS so remove one and use only one burning program; for example Nero.
