Satellite P500 - Splinter Cell is very slow - low resolution

Hey guys,
I have a Toshiba Satellite P500.
CPU Intel Core2 Quad processor Q9000 (2.0GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 6MB L2 Cache)
Operating System Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit (includes recovery partition for Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit)
Screen Size 18.4" Widescreen HD+ TruBrite Display (1680 x 945), supports 720p
Memory 4GB DDR2 (2GB + 2GB) (800MHz) expandable to 8GB
Storage 1000GB (500GB + 500GB) (5400rpm) SATA
Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (2286MB Total: 1GB discrete memory + 1262MB shared memory with ATI HyperMemory technology)
Optical Disc Drive DVD SuperMulti Double/Dual Layer
Now im trying to play games like, Splinter Cell Convictions and things of that sort, apparently, according to the Games website, i meet all the recommended specs. Yet when i play the game its on a very low resolution and all settings set to LOW!
Is anyone else having these problems with there Notebooks?

Hi Sammole,
Sine few days I have Satellite P500 too. I have to say its a very great notebook, I love it. The screen is really good and big and in my opinion the best option for games, videos and all other multimedia stuff. Furthermore its equipped with fast CPU and graphic card, ideal for playing games.
All my games running fine so I dont know what happened to you. Make sure that the eco mode isnt active, this will slow down the performance.
Make also sure that newest display driver from Toshiba is installed and latest DirectX version from Microsoft.
Have also a look Splinter Cell homepage. Maybe there is an update (patch) available that can help you. :)

  • Satellite U500 - Copy process is very slow

    Hi friends,
I'm using Satellite U500-1f5, for last 2 months. It is core i5 with Windows 7. Still the copying process is very slow and some times booting is little bit slower.
Can anyone post a valid answer to resolve this problem?

    Hey mate,
Sounds like that you have installed a lot of software that slows down the performance of your notebook.
So which programs you have installed?
Theoretically it could also be caused due a virus or trojan. You should check your notebook for viruses using a good antivirus program like AntiVir.
Try also to defragment the HDD. If you install/uninstall many programs, you should defragment the HDD from time to time. You can use the integrated Windows defragmentation tool.

  • Satellite C660-1ZM is running very slow

I recently repaired my laptop back to its original state, so nothing had been installed on it, it seems very slow, as it crashes or stuggles to load on several basic programs, sometimes it loads fine other times it just hangs, I have installed several drivers from the list on Toshiba, but still stays the same.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

    > what I did was repair my laptop with the startup repair, it then whiped my whole operating system off, so i did a complete reinstall of the operating system then removed the old version.
Usually a system recovery (using recover disk or HDD recovery) should set the notebook back to factory settings and this procedure should format the HDD and replace the whole system, drivers and preinstalled tools. In most cases this helps to get OS running properly
In your case it looks like system is affected by some processes running in the background.
Would recommend clearing the system and registry using CCleaner (freeware software).
Additionally you can take a look in taskmanager in order to check the processes.
There you can see what process locks the CPU and how many RAM is used by single process

  • Satellite P200-100 is running very slow

My Vista C: drive is more or less full while my Data E: drive is virtually empty. Could this explain why the laptop is running so slow? Can I move some files from C: to E: and if so will this help or will it cause a problem?
    Do I need memory expansion?
    Hope you can help!

Generally speaking you can do this but dont move some files important for preinstalled applications.
What you probably need is general OS clean-up. Better solution is new OS installation but after doing this you must reinstall all applications that you use now.
What is your opinion: OS clean-up or clean OS installation? Let us know so we can continue discussion in the right direction.

  • Very slow working Satellite L30-10V

I've had my toshiba just under two years now and for pretty much as long as I remember its been very slow. Last week it died completly and kept telling me there was a harddisk error preventing windows from opening. I did the product recovery on toshibas advice and got my computer working again but its still as slow as ever, if not more! Theres nothing on here to even make it slow.
I've changed the power setting to a more efficient one, done a disk clean up and defragmented it but nothings changed. I have over 45GB free out of 59GB so I'm not sure that updating the memory would help?
    I need advice please, HELP!

Sure sounds like the symptoms when a hard drive is dying.
The slowdown occurs because reads and writes to the drive must often be made multiple times before they are successful.
What does chkdsk have to say?

  • Satellite P500 - Eco, speaker and touchpad on/off button don't work

    Hello,
I love my new Satellite P500. Great Laptop!
But I have a little problem with the eco button, speaker button an the touchpad on/off button. They dont work! 2 days ago I refreshed my Windows 7 after the same problem. Today I have the problem again.
I searched for a option where I can support this buttons, but no result.
Is it possible to reinstall it?
I installed the eco software again, but it wont work with the button on the left side. Same with the touchpad on/off button.
    Any Idea?
    Thanks
    Alexander

    Hi
Nice to read that you are love your new Satellite P500. My friend has also bought new Satellite P500 and he is very satisfied too. Its a great notebook with fast and new hardware equipped. The design is fantastic I have to say.
Anyway, you can reinstall the Eco Utility and Toshiba Value Added Package that controls such special functions. Both utilites you can get on the Toshiba page:

    Good luck! :)

  • IPhoto dock icon displays in low resolution

I update iPhoto the other day, prompted by software update, and since then the iphoto dock icon is very noticeably low resolution.  I deleted iPhoto and reinstalled it to no effect.  Any ideas what is going on?

Sorry but the Dock icon is a system issue - it has nothing to do with iPhoto
Typically it is just an alaisis and you can drag it to the trash then launch iPhoto and while it is running right click on the icon in the Dock and select keep in dock
As always be sure you have a good up to date backup prior to messing with your system

  • Scary problem! Old photos suddenly dark, low resolution.

Going through some old pictures I've just noticed that 3-4 sets from 4 years ago have become very dark and lower resolution.
The weirdest part is that they are not complete "sets" -- that is, the darkness seems to in random groups of certain sets (i.e., the first 3-4 are okay, followed by 20 dark/low rez images, followed by 2-3 'normal' images).
I tried zapping the PRAM, as I read that resolved a similar issue. And I repaired permissions.
    No dice.
Any thoughts? What I'm afraid of is this happening to all my photos.
Note that I upgraded from a 12" G4 to an iMac two years ago, and imported all those photos. I also upgraded to 10.6 about 8 months ago.
But I just noticed this now -- not sure when it happened.
    HELP!

Thanks much for the tips. I calibrated per your suggestion and killed the pref file -- still have several batches of very dark, low resolution photos that weren't that way before.

    Ill appreciate any HELP!

    Hi buddy,
Can you be a little bit more detailed, please? What do you understand with very slow?
How long it takes to startup Windows?
How long it takes to start an application?
I have to say that Windows XP 64bit wasnt popular and there is no official support from Toshiba for this OS. If you want to use Windows XP, I can recommend installing the 32bit version.
Have you tested your notebook with factory settings? Does it work properly with preinstalled OS from Toshiba?
Im also Satellite L300 owner and I use the preinstalled Windows XP 32bit from Toshiba. Im very satisfied with this notebook, its pretty fast and need few energy. :)

  • MacBook Pro very slow to bring up homepage, won't open programs; likely related to attempt to upgrade Java software on the Parallels side, not successful because of low C drive capacity, recommended C drive compression not successful/completed.

MacBook Pro very slow to bring up homepage, programs won't open; likely related to failure to upgrade Java on Parallels, told that C disc low capacity, disc compression recommended was unsuccesful/failed. Rebooting, battery removal hasn't helped. Can't open Systems Preferences. Suggestions?

Linc, the resident dump guru, will probably be along in awhile and provide deeper insights, but here goes for now. I'm seeing an awful lot of warnings and messages from Chrome. Any chance you could lay off that browser for awhile and use Safari in the meanwhile? No red messages anywhere in the listing. Have you tried rebooting into Mountain Lion Recovery Mode to do a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions? (Cause in spite of what your config tag says, the dump indicates you are running a ML kernel)

  • Very slow new Satellite L40

I'd be grateful for any help you guys can give me.
I have a new-ish Satellite L40 (bought last autumn). It's a dead basic machine -- Intel Celeron / 1.60GHz / 1015 RAM -- running Vista Home Premium. It was bought just to do word processing work + some very light internet use. The problem is that it runs very slowly (including taking forever to get going when I first turn it on).
I've virus tested it to death. I regularly run spyware detection / elimination programmes. I've cut the number of start-up programmes right back. All the results say I've got a clam machine. But still it's as slow as hell. And when I say slow, I can just about make a cup of coffee in the time it takes to access the net.
I've contacted Toshiba technical support, and the best they could suggest was that I reformat the hard disk, which is pretty drastic. If anyone out there has a better suggestion, I'd love to hear it. Right now, I'm rather regretting my initial purchase.
    Thanks a lot -- Max

To be honest this drastic solution is not a bad proposal.
But what do you mean exactly with slow machine???
How long do you need for a booting?
Fact is that many applications are preinstalled on this notebook and this could be a main reason for a long booting. But fact is that many of these applications are necessary to run all the notebook features.
Furthermore a antivirus program which is running in the background and could affect the booting time. Long time ago I have used the Norton Antivirus and this software was a reason why my notebook was very slow... I changed it and now I'm use the freeware software like Antivir. It's much better...

  • My iMac takes 20 minutes to boot and is very slow. I get messages that system disk is low but it shows 600 gb of 1000. Thanks.

As above. Takes forever to boot, Painfully slow, low HD message despite showing over 600 GB available. Thanks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem – the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
Edit out excessive repeats and personal information, if any.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search the archived log, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs – they're very long and not helpful.

  • Satellite 1800 plays DVDs very slow

My Satellite S1800 is very slow, when trying to watch dvd movies, picture and voice stucks and when watching videos from youtube, its same thing.
I just formatted my hard drive and re-installed winxp and thought that would help , but no , its still same thing.
What is the problem? My toshibas specs: 1Ghz , 256 ram , 8mb trident cyberblade ai1, 20gb, i think those should roll some dvd movie?

First, I wanted to answer with a detailed reasons of this, but this forum did NOT allowed me to post my "polite and helpful" message due to spelling mistakes even there wasn't any. Then it allowed me to post without spelling checking. (did not understand, weird)
The answer of your problem is because of excessive cpu usage which i had on my similar S1800-100 while watching any MPEG-2 video or youtube video.
I don't know why the DVD drive was insertings into this notebook, maybe for data transfer or other viewing, the fact that your CPU is not strong enough to render DVD movies, it should be the reason.
Please check your CPU usage while watching videos.

  • Satellite A300-MM1 - start-up is very slow

I bought 3 Laptops (Satellite A300-MM1) a month ago but I noticed they were all very slow at start up (boot).
They took about 6 minutes till I saw the desktop and sometimes don't work.
    Satellite A300 MM1 (harman/kardon)
Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack1)
    Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual T3200 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz
    3.00 GB RAM
I thought it was the Antivirus but I put McAfee Antivirus in two of them and Kaspersky in the other but I faced the same problem.
    What I should do?

I bought an A300 21H and start up was appauling so I took the following out and now I'm up and running in about 30 secs,
    Tempro
    Config Free
    Toshiba power saver
Mcafee AV and now using Kaspersky
    Chicony Tray
and disabled flash cards via control panel (can still use F keys)
When I first got my laptop it took 2 min to start up and battery life of between 1 hr 10min to 1 hr 30min
by removing the above my start up is under 30 secs and battery life is about 2hr 30 mins.
The programs were removed by using the RUN and typing msconfig
untick the boxes under the START UP tab that you dont want running
RESTART machine then CONTROL PANEL and uninstall them
Please note Mcafee needs a removal tool off their website to completely remove it..
Flash Cards was disabled only and not completely removed via CONTROL PANEL then PERFORMANCE ICON then top left hand corner MANAGE START UP PROGRAMS then DISABLE..........
Now your laptop will be very much quicker

  • Satellite A300 - Very slow statrting of Windows OS

    hello
    i own a Toshiba a300.
I'm facing a lot of problems with it.
Firstly, its very slow at start up..... I'v read read this post
-removing all useless software from the system
-removing preinstalled antivir application and installation of Avira Antivir software (for me definitely the best one because it doesn't need so many resources)
-disabling start up for all processes that I donâ't need (MSCONFIG)
-disabling all hardware components I don't need in device manager (modem, multicard reader, PCMCIA slot, firewire)
Pls can u mention precisely what all are useless softwares in my laptop...... This is first time im owning a computer so i donnno much....
I'm using kaspersky anti virus. Should i switch to avira?? I'm also facing another problem. My led on/off function doesnt work instead it acts as a mute button. It used to be fine earlier... I tried button support (dimmer.exe), HW setup but both failed... then i uninstalled n reinstalled some value added pack from an australian site but that too failed... pls help ..... I'm p***** off..... any suggestions/help will be really appreciated.

    >Pls can u mention precisely what all are useless softwares in my laptop......
Only you can decide what software is not important for you
Toshiba has preinstalled many different programs. Most of these applications controls some notebook features like FN buttons, controls, etc but of course such software needs hardware resources and slow down the booting procedure.
In MSCONFIG you can disable some processes and could test how the notebook would run without these applications.
Furthermore I recommend updating or removing the Tempro tool which was preinstalled by Toshiba!
The Avira scanner is great. Im using it as well and its for free.
Its low hardware eater and therefore the notebook should boot faster using Avira instead Kaspersky.
