Satellite P55W-B5318 Power Supply Very Hot

I purchased a Satellite P55W-B5318 yesterday. While charging the laptop the power brick got very hot, too hot to handle for more than a few seconds. The model number of the power supply is PA5177U-1ACA. I read Toshiba has replaced some power supplies which ran hot. Should I request a new power supply?

You should call Tech Support at 1-800-457-7777 immediately.  It should only get warm to the touch. But the best thing to do is take it back where you bought it for an exchange.

  • 45w power supply getting hot

When I plug my 45w power supply into the extended cable it brick gets incredibly hot. When I plug it directly into the wall with the 2 prong plug it does not get as hot.
Any suggestions as to what is going on?

It will also depends on WHEN you are checking the brick.  If you check the brick after say, you have been watching Netflix movies FULL screen for the last 2 hours, it will likely be more hot than it would if you were just surfing around the internet.  Also, it would be warmer if it was currently charging the battery as opposed to JUST powering the computer.  It shouldnt matter if it is the long cable or the direct plug.  Last, define HOT?  What you consider HOT may not be hot at all to me.  It is a completely subjective thing.  Obviously if it is so hot that you cannot touch it, that is a different story.

  • Power Supply TOO HOT

Can anyone tell me the acceptable range for an operating temp in a 450 watt power supply? I have an Antec 450W and it runs around 56 degrees celcius. Speed fan tells me it's too hot. Is there anyway I can cool it down? Thanks.

    Wow !
i can't believe that it is hotter from my cpu while o/c'ing to 2500Mhz
My 300w elanvital PSU which is overloaded with my system , is working at 40-42C.
i thought that it must be around 44-46 C for 450W power supply ..........
Do you think is there any thing getting too much power from your PSU..
HSF , LED etc. ? or is there wire shortcut making PSU hot ?

  • Power supply really hot!

I know there are a couple of bad caps inside my G5 PS, but I am waiting for the new caps to come from Digikey which should be here soon.
When I was testing it out I had the iMac G5 open and laying flat on a soft cloth towel.
Now everything inside was warm to the touch nothing really jumping out at me as being too hot. That is until I touched the power supply. No I didn't get burned as my reflexes are still pretty good.
Now my question is, even with the caps after they are replaced, should the power supply be this hot or will it cool down to a safe handling temperature?
I am thinking about doing the mod with adding the fan(s) (2 - 80mm or 1- 120mm) for the CPU and possibly adding a new mod to put 3-4 small 30mm to 40mm fans on the back of the iMac near the power supply at the bottom of the iMac G5 to draw the heat out. I do not want to push air in as that would just heat up the inside of the iMac. So the way the PS is made, it would pull air from the bottom and exhaust it out the back.
Let me know about the above question in blue.

The power adapter has several internal protective circuits, including over-temperature.  If the temperature gets too high, the power adapter will shut itself off.  When charging, the power adapter should be on a hard, flat surface to assure proper air flow.

  • Satellite P10-873: power supply and CPU overload

I have the P10-873 notebook for 4 months.
The problem is that it turns off when it is connected to AC power.
I can only work using the battery. When the battery goes off I charge it normally (with the notebook turned off) and then I use the notebook only with battery again.
If I connect it to the AC power it turns off after 3 minutes maximum!!!
I have checked the CPU usage while connected to AC and it seems that the CPU is overloaded (from 65-98% - where it shuts down!) without running any applications other that the processes needed for the notebook to operate.
I have sent the notebook to TOSHIBA and they returned it saying that they updated the BIOS.
Unfortunately the problem was not fixed!!!
    Do you have any suggestions?

    Hello
Sorry but I think that there is some problem with notebook power supply electronic. The BIOS update can not solve the problem at all. Please contact your notebook seller or try to contact the Authorized service partner again. They should check the unit again.

  • Satellite A200-1J0 is getting very hot

When i work long hourks on my laptop ( 4-5 hours ) it is geting so hot that i can't even put my hand on buttons and sometimes it just turns off =(((
I don't know what the problem is?!
Did some have the same problem?!
Such bad tendancy started since i installed Windows XP insted of standart Vista.
    Laptot : Toshiba Satellite A200-1J0

    Hi
Ohh.You have installed Win XP? Well buddy. In such case you should update the BIOS too!
There is a BIOS designed especially for Win XP and you should update it if you switched to Win XP OS.
Furthermore you should install the Toshiba Power Saver and should change the settings in Toshiba Power Saver Basic Setup.
There you can find the option called Cooling Method. Set it to Max Performance.
Furthermore you can set the CPU processing speed to a lower level and CPU control method to Auto.
At the other hand your notebook can overheat because of the clogged cooling grilles and cooling modules. I know this because my notebooks temperature was high until I removed the dust from the cooling fans.
I used a compressed air spray. You can buy it from different computer dealers or online shops.
    Cheers

  • "Wall wart" on power supply too hot to touch

I'm wondering if this is a normal condition or something to be worried about.

You should allow good air circulation to prolong its lifespan, and I don't think keeping it under your blankets is a great idea
I have worked with electrical engineers, who have introduced me to the concept of a .6 (60%) safety factor. This means that in any design, you include tolerances more than 60% above what is required for safety. I have no double Apple has done this too. This means things like if your device will spontaneously combust at 500 degrees, make it break at 250 degrees, and the like.
The only time you need to be really worried is with goods that are counterfeit (like some Apple batteries and power supplies from eBay). The rest of the time, you're likely to find very good safety factors in them

  • Sometimes my power supply gets hot

I have the newest MacBook Pro 15 with the 2.5 Ghz Intel i7. I've noticed that sometimes my power transformer gets pretty when charging the laptop. Other times it doesn't get warm at all. Why would this happen? Is there something wrong with it?

    Hi!
I have the exact same notebook as you.
I'm not sure that this is true, but I think that this depends on the difference in charge.
For example-- as charge from (100% - 40% = 60%) requires more time, it may heat up.
whereas, a charge up 10% won't heat up as much.

  • Satellite P55W-B5318 - Wireless Signal at 4 bars only

Hi - My wifi often sits at 4 bars but my other laptops have always been 5 bars.
Is there something different onn the Toshiba?

Im quite sure there is nothing wrong with your notebook.
Fact is that different notebook models are equipped with different WLan antennas and as well as different WLan cards.
The WLan signal performance and strength depends on the Wlan antenna, WLan standards (802.11 A/B/G/N etc), WLan frequency range 2.4Ghz/5Ghz as well as the environment.
Also the WLan performance / power settings can affect the WLan signal strength.
I guess your other notebook supports another WLan card / WLan antenna.
Probably the Wlan settings as well as the power saving settings might be different too.
I recommend you to check the WLan power saving option in Windows advanced power settings.
There should be an option to switch to maximum performance.
Nevertheless, as I mentioned above: various factors may affect the signal strength

  • Satellite power supply dead

    Greetings,
My Satellite U505-S2950 power supply had no output.
After about an hour, I was looking for a replacement at Walmart.
I bought one and tryed the original Toshiba.  It worked!  Oops It lasted about 10 minutes!
It's out again, this time for the count. Dead, Dead.
    Has anyone had this happen?
    Thanks,
    Bigdrag

Hi, Please take extra care with replacement parts. It is a geniune part? Does the part number matches with your original adapter part number? Also make sure that the output corresponds to your laptop power source specification as doing otherwise may damage your laptop.
My suggestion is that when dealing with chargers and batteries always go for original parts. Although might be more expensive they are the safest.

  • Is power supply 3k-X 715W AC hot swappable on Cisco 3750X?

Is power supply 3k-X 715W AC hot swappable on Cisco 3750X?
    Thanks
    Diego

    Sorry, found the answer http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750x_3560x/hardware/installation/guide/3750x_3560x_HIG/HIGFRU.html
The power supply is hot-swappable. In some configurations, such as full PoE+ or power sharing mode, removing a power supply causes powered devices to shut down until the power budget matches the input power of a single power supply. To minimize network interruption, hot swap the power supply under these circumstances:
–The switch is connected to an XPS 2200 and sufficient power is available.
–The switch is in StackPower mode and sufficient power is available (Catalyst 3750-X only).
–The switch is powered by other switches in a power stack, and no active backup is in progress.
For the switch commands for displaying the available power budget, see the Catalyst 3750-X and 3560-X Software Configuration Guide.

  • Battery Life is short and when i do charge the power supply gets to hot to touch?

Hi! I'm not sure whats Wrong with my MacBook Pro 15" - Mid 2010, i7, 4gb RAM, 512mb Graphics.
When i charge my MB it has a really short life (50 - 60 min) without using high demanding programs. I've had a look in system information and i found this;  Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4858
im not sure what it should be but does it sound like a healthy battery?
My second question, the power supply is hot to touch is this a contributing factor? I took it in to apple and they suggested to buy a new charger, so £65 later and i still have the overheating of the power supply and the short battery life problems, HELP!

That is not a good sign.  Check the connection on the MBP to see if there is any foreign matter or discoloration evident.
Open System Information>Power and post this from your MBP:
(make certain that the charger is attached)
Also run an Apple Hardware Test.  You may use the appropriate original install disk for this which has the AHT instructions printed on it.
Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro, power supply is very hot?

macbook pro 15zoll with retina display, power supply is very hot! is this normal??

It depends on what you are doing.  Yes, the power supply can get hot.  This is normal.

  • Power supply get very hot!

I just bought a Pavilion dv6-6c35dx laptop and have noticed that the power supply gets really really hot, to the point that it scares me and I disconnect the laptop. Does anyone has the same problem?

Same problem here on my dv6-6c35dx.
I didn't know about the power cord recall, and I bought a new ac adapter, power cord and replaced the battery. No change, the adapter gets really hot, too hot using the 2 second rule! Experienced chefs use it to determine if a grill is hot enough by touching it for no more than 2 seconds.
I'm now putting it on a ceramic plate to make sure it doesn't smoke something when its charging. I hope HP knows this is a problem. Maybe the battery charging rate can be slowed and this may help.
