Satellite P840 - Unable to restore system image of Win 8.1

I have Toshiba P840 laptop which came with windows 8.0.
I created DVD and USB backups
After upgrade to windows 8.1 and saving images, I had a problem software and needed to go back to a previous back in windows 8.1.
The restore from the external HDD fails due to driver incompatibilities.
Technical support advise to restore windows 8.0 and then upgrade again to windows 8.1
Is there a better way to restore windows 8.1 image?
Is it possible to populate the boot usb (from windows 8 as original) to windows 8.1 drivers?
I am unable to create boot usb with windows 8.1 as the hdd partition has windows 8.0
Thanks,

For the future I recommend you to create a system backup using the Windows own system backup and restore feature.
Here some details provided by Microsoft:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
It related to Win 8 as well as Win 8.1
Of course for this step this isnt possible. So you would need to use Toshiba recovery medium to go back to Win 8, then to upgrade to Win 8.1
After installation and update of all the Windows 8.1 drivers and tools, create the backup as mentioned on the MS page.

I've created a system image and the recovery media disks.
Now, I want to restore the system image.  I've booted from the DVD but which option do I choose: TOSHIBA Recovery Wizard or System recovery Options
    Thank you

  • System image for Win 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1

Hello, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  Am reading conflicting information online about being able to produce a system image in Win 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 - plus am not able to find directions for this process online or
on the laptop in question.   The hard drive is failing in this laptop so I need to produce an image so that the transition when the new drive is installed will be a simple one.  If creating a system image is not possible in this version of Windows
are there other alternatives that will accomplish my goal?
    Thanks, Steve.

    Hi Steven,
If you are using a retail edition Windows, kindly follow the instructions as mentioned in the article.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/back-up-programs-system-settings-files#1TC=windows-7
For OEM system, system image backup recovery for new hard disk might cause Windows activation failure by OEM product key.
as mentioned by Rick, you might need to contact the manufacturer of your system for assistance.

  • Restore system image over windos 8.1 restore

Hi all new poster so sorry if in wrong place move if needed.
What I would like to know if I have a disk image of my 8.1 system as I like to have it set up IE my antivirus and documents etc.
Can I use toshiba recovery to restore back to factory settings then us my disk image on dvd to restore system to how I like it to be.
In other words how I would of had the restore partition if I have been able to make the restore system on the "D" drive without all the rubbish that is installed by the factory.
    dpick1947

Yes, you can use Windows 8.1 to create an image of your current disk. Better to put it on an external USB drive rather than DVDs.
Control Panel > File History > System Image Backup (at the lower left)
I made a shortcut to sdclt.exe to go there. But it must run elevated as follows:
Right-click the shortcut > Properties > Shortcut tab > Advanced button > Run as administrator
You can restore it after installing or restoring Windows if you like. But it's easier to boot Windows 8 recovery media and restore directly.
We create an image every night and retain the most recent ten for backup.

I have never been able to make a backup (system image+files)  using windows 7.
I tried it right from the purchase of my notebook (2-3 times), then at least 4 more times over more than a year.
I tried 3 different usb external drives (all working), but the program was not able to complete the image. I feel that having a backup of my files and the system image would be a great way to undo any problem without doing a full install of Win7 and all the programs I use.
I'm not sure if the error message was always the same. You have the last one I got here : Input-Output Error (I-O).
I did try chkdsk/r on both drives without any change.
OK so that was the result. Let me give you more details about what I did :
    (loose translation warning...)
Using Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore
Then I click on Create a System Image.
Then I chose the drives to be saved :

  • USB recovery disk won't restore System Image - U410 internal harddrives don't load? Error 0x80042414

Hello all. My name's Richard and I have a problem.
My U410 was stolen (bastards!) on Christmas Eve (double bastards!) but I had an old System Image saved on an external hard drive. So I bought exactly the same laptop second-hand intending to restore the image.
However, when I try to restore it via Control Panel, after the restart the computer tells me I have to do the restore process from a Windows System Repair disc instead, because it needs to reformat the drive that the Restore Environment is running from. Obviously, the U410 doesn't have a CD drive, so I made a Windows 7 64 bit USB restore drive, and moved the USB drive up in my boot list so I can boot from it.
This lets me get to the stage of selecting my system image from the external hard drive. The restore process starts for three seconds, then I get error 0x80042414: the system cannot find the drives onto which the image should be copied.
I've done some digging around and used diskpart to discover that the two internal hard drives aren't loading / aren't visible when I boot from the USB. When I run diskpart from windows I have four disks: the USB, the external hard drive, an 8GB one which I guess is the SSD and the 698GB HDD. When I navigate to the command promt in the Recovery Environment diskpart only lists the USB and the external hard drive.
So I'm thinking that the internal drives aren't loading up for some reason when I boot from the USB. Is there any way round this? I've tried the 'load drivers' function in the Recovery Environment but even when i save all drivers listed for the internal hard drives onto the boot USB key, then navigate to them and try to load them, each one just returns "the selected file contains nothing about your hardware".
I'd be so grateful for any help. I was so sad when my laptop was stolen, so happy when I discovered the system image, so sad when I found out I needed exactly the same computer, so happy when I found one online, and now.... i'm emotionally exhausted.
    Thanks guys,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
I'm sorry you had to go through some pretty emotional trauma with your U410 getting stolen and all. However, I do hope you are back on track now.
I haven't been as unfortunate as you. However, I need to restore Win 7 on my U410. I have with me the recovery disks purchased from Lenovo. My question is, were you able to get the image onto a USB disk to perform the restoration? If so, could you point me to some instructions?
Seriously, Lenovo ships laptop specific recovery images on optical disks for their laptops that do not have optical drives. Makes no sense to me. It's time they sell recovery images on USB drives.

  • Unable to Restore Disk Image of TM Backups

I am trying to Restore disk images of TM backups to a newly formatted (OSx extended - journaled) 500MB firewire drive. I created 2 partitions, One for each TM image of the backups for my two Macbooks. When I follow the prompts to restore in DU, the process starts and then fails. I am sure that I am missing something. Can I get some guidance from the experts please?
I am preparing my machines to upgrade to Snowleopard, but I need to be sure I have my backups in place before I make room on the internal hard drives for the upgrade.
    Thanks in advance,
    Capt Ron

    Captron wrote:
You are probably sorry you got into this one. I have not explained it well. I guess it boils down to this: Is it possible to restore my TM backups on a new volume, from a disk image of the original backups?
I've never tried it, but apparently not. In Leopard, only Disk Utility and SD are known to work.
In answer to your questions, the original backups (one for each computer) were copied to a disk image. Both computers were originally backed up on separate drives, but the addition of another computer to the family necessitated combining the TM backups for my 2 laptops onto one drive. I could not copy them using the method in the FAQ (#18) because I wanted to use the same drive, only with 2 partitions. I tried adding a partition with DU but it failed each time due to lack of space.
As long as each partition was at least as large as the corresponding old drive, that should work. But you can't copy, say, 100 gb of backups into a 50 gb partition: you must copy the entire partition into a new partition. If the old partition was not full, and old backups were not scattered over the empty space, you may be able to copy a larger onto a smaller partition.
Do you still have the original backups? If so, assuming they were each used exclusively for TM, had TM begun deleting old backups?
If so, and if the new drive can be partitioned into 2 partitions each at least as large as the old disks, try it again. Be sure to check the *Erase Destination* box; you cannot copy them properly without that.

  • Can no longer make system image after Win 8.1 upgrade (error 0x80780119)

I've recently upgraded to 8.1 and am now trying to make system image.
Unfortunately, it's failing with error 80780119.
    [Image of failed backup|http://www.sawyourad.com/toshiba/failed.png]
I've had this happen before on another computer system, and resizing the recovery partition seems to fix it, and is what's suggested on the web.
However, I can't seem to do that on this machine, diskmgmt.msc doesn't seem to show any disk space used, and worse, many of the partitions seem to be duplicated
    [image of disk partitions|http://www.sawyourad.com/toshiba/diskmgmt.png]
You'll notice that none of the recovery partitions appear to have any space used.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next.
The 8.1 update has pretty much rendered my machine unsafe to use, as I can't back it up any more.
I hope I don't need to add Toshiba to my don't buy list.

    Hi
    >I hope I don't need to add Toshiba to my don't buy list.
This is not a option buddy. Why? Because it seems that this is a common Windows issue as many people asked for a solution in the Microsoft forums and community.
    [Backup fails Error code 0x81000019|http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/25deba76-464b-4a9d-9b32-a283bb6a88ce/windows-7-rc-backup-fails-errorcode-0x81000019?forum=w7itproperf]
Someone solved this by de-selecting the create driver image checkbox available when you choose the contents of the backup.
But it looks like his error come when hidden System Reserved partition created by Windows system does not have enough space to store a shadow copy.
Please check the freespace on this volume.
    Follow the following steps:
    1. Start -> Computer -> Right click -> Manage
    2. Select Storage -> Disk management.
    3. Verify that you have a System Reserved partition of around 100 MB size or more
    4. If yes, right click on this volume and select Properties.
    5. View used and free space.
Windows backup requires around 40 MB of free space on this partition to backup successfully.
So if the free space is less than 40 GB, backup does not get enough free space.
As a workaround try the following solution:
Since the default System reserved partition cannot be extended, creating a new system volume is the workaround. Here are the steps to move the system volume to any other volume:
    1. Choose where you want to have your system volume.
Few things you need to keep in mind:
    a. System volume can only be created on a primary partition of MBR disk.
    b. If system volume & boot volume are together, then BitLocker feature cannot be used to encrypt volumes on your machine.
    2. Suggest creating a new volume (say F:) on the same disk that contains the boot partition of size of about 490 MB (be careful to keep it less than 500 MB).
    3. Assuming Windows is installed on C: on your machine. From an elevated command-prompt run: bcdboot.exe /s C:\Windows /s F:.
    4. From elevated command-prompt run: DISKPART
    5. From the disk part command-prompt:
    DISKPART> select volume F
    DISKPART> active
Now you can reboot your machine and F: will become the system volume.
You can undo this by repeating the same steps using the original system volume (you have to assign drive-letter to it) to revert to your previous configuration.

  • Time Capsule corrupt, and unable to restore system

My iMac hard drive crashed, and I recently had to get it replaced under warranty. When I got my computer back, I was trying to restore my previous system from the Time Capsule backup. After hours on the phone with support, and at the Genius Bar, I was told that the files on my Time Capsule are corrupt. All my data is unretreivable.
Is there a way I can get it back? All of my life was backed up there.

    skraev wrote:
I understand... that is really too bad. I guess I wasted $100...
Not entirely. It's probably a good investment for the future. It's the kind of thing you shouldn't need often, but now and then it may be able to fix things Disk Utility can't.
Apple told me that they have a very expensive service that can try to restore the TC hard drive. How good are they?
I don't know. I've never used it, and don't recall a post by anyone who has. And as with +Disk Warrior,+ there's no guarantee what they may be able to recover.
I also just tried copying the sparsebudle unto my desktop.
Did that work? If so, that's a good sign. See if the size seems right.
Can DiskWarrior restore the files from it if it is on the local hard drive?
It won't restore anything. It might be able to repair it, so you can get at the files. But with it on the same volume as everything else, you'll have to boot from the +Disk Warrior+ disc to try, and it will do the whole disk, so will take quite a while.
Your best bet would be to create a separate partition on your internal HD (unless you have or can borrow an external disk). Copy it there, then let Disk Warrior work on it. If DW can fix it, Time Machine might be able to restore some or all of it to your startup drive.
Post back if you want to try that, and there's plenty of room on your internal HD, and I'll show you how to make a separate partition.
Thank you very much for your help! I am getting pretty desperate to get my "old life" back...
    Yes, I'll bet!

  • How can I create system image of Win-7 only on drive with Win-7 (NTFS) and Win-ME (FAT-32) system partitions

I am trying to create a Windows 7 Image Backup on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit PC.
I have two bootable partitions on my hard drive. One is NTFS and contains the Win-7 system files.
The other is FAT-32 and contains a Windows-ME system.
When it comes to selecting the drives (partitions) for backing up, both are marked as System, and both are selected. Both are also "greyed out) - I cannot uncheck them.
Furthermore, the Windows-7 imaging utility supplied with Windows-7 returns an error saying it cannot image the disk because it contains a partition that is not NTFS.
How can I select and image ONLY the NTFS partition that contains the Win-7 system? That is what I want to do.

Any of the products listed below will backup the contents (all partitions) of your disk drive. The only limitation is that you must install the backup software in Windows 7. You will perform a "Disk and Partition" backup by manually selecting
the disk and all partitions (NTFS / FAT32) and the Master boot Record (MBR) on the drive. The destination / where the Image Backup will be stored should be an external USB drive. With a "Disk and Partition" backup you can restore any partition
to your existing drive or the entire backup (to the same disk drive or a new drive).

  • Yoga 13 System Image Restore Fails Due To Excluded Disk

    Hello:
I am trying to execute a restore from a system image disc created shortly after I installed my principal programs without destroying the OKR partition or files.  However, I  do not want to go all the way back to factory condition at this time.  The issue is that when I attempt to follow the reimage instructions in win 8.1, I am presented with a dialog box that has two check boxes.  The first asks "Format and repartition disk" and the second asks "only restore system drives".
Based on everything I've read about preserving the C:/ and D:/ drive partitions, I would have expected to check the second box and not the first.  But the system will not let me make this choice.  Instead, the first box is automatically checked, and greyed out, with a second dialogue asking me if there are any disks I want to exclude from repartitioning.  When following this second dialogue I am asked if I want to exclude Disk 0 (Samsung MZMTD128HAfV -00l1) which has 119Gb of capacity.  If I try to exclude this disk, the operation fails with following error:   "Restore failed because a disk that was critical at backup is excluded"  My question is, if I do not exclude this disk, will the restore operation still leave the D:/ partition intact so I can use OKR in the future.
I have read quite a bit of imformation here and elsewhere about restoring system images and OKR, but have not seen any discussion about this disalogue, or the fact that I am being forced to reformat and repartition the disk without excluding the d:/ drive.  Other posters have stated that retsoringa  system image will only restore C;? drive, but this dialogue seems to conflict with those statements.  Anyone else have any experience with this operation?
    Thank you,

    Thank you,

  • System image/snapshot for restoring entire system.

1- I want to make "system images"/"snapshots" of my computer for a later restore.
2- Also i would like to learn more about how to restore "system images" of my system.
note: since time machine works incremental i dont want that because i cannot isolate a system image.
    thank you,
    Paulo

Time machine does do just that. you just misunderstand how it works. you can do a full system restore from Time machine to any time point you have a backup for and it will give you an exact copy of your system (minus some temp files) at that time. to do a full system restore from TM you boot from the leopard install DVD and select "restore system from backup" from the utilities menu.
    thank you,

  • HP recovery freezes when I prep restoring factory image

A user had the recovery disks for my laptop, and tried to run them to restore his laptop to factory settings. But, after putting in the second disk, it frozen and was stuck at 0%. According to the prompts from software, Hard drive’s windows partition was formatted, and files were restored to the hard drive. But the progress was 0%, or prompt will be “Please wait”, and cancel buttons are grayed out.
This phenomenon is seldom, but some users that encounter such problem will be very angry. How to fix it? Is there other easier ways to restore factory image.
    How to solve such problem?
There are some reasons causing this problems.
laptop is not connected to power adaptor. During recovery, there is no power to supply computer and it shuts down automatically.
    Restoring discs haven’t burned correctly.
The hard drives, such as CD/ DVD burner or other things, are damaged.
In general, the reasons are complicated, the best way is to send computers to check what the problem is. Of course, if you just want to restore system image, you can use the easier way-HP recovery manager.
Use HP recovery manager to restore system factory image
Being a branded computer, HP computers are equipped with recovery partitions, and can usually be recovered to factory settings without the use of external recovery media (such as discs or USB drives). When computer goes wrong, You don’t need the discs to restore HP, but use HP recovery manager to restore system. After computer boots, please tap F11 immediately to bring up the option for factory image, and you can enter HP recovery manager, which can help you to restore system factory image.
Whether your computer happens problem or not, based on suggestions from netizens, onekey recovery is more simpler and easier than recovery disk. If you don’t make a system backup, you can download a free Windows 7 image of the same version that you use from here and burn to a DVD. Use your activation code on the computer stick to activate.
A easier way to restore system factory image
Besides the built-in recovery software, maybe the third-party recovery software is powerful as well. AOMEI OneKey Recovery can totally meet your demand that backup and restore system easily. After you buy computer, you can backup system with AOMEI OneKey Recovery, which can help you restore factory setting, once your computer breaks down in the future.
