Satellite Pro 4600 - CPU graphics card overheat?

16 days ago my tosh Sat Pro 4600 lost the ability to maintaing 25 fps in an online game - ie. diablo 2.
It now plays at an average of 4 fps and ping gets up to over 4000... needless to say unplayable now...
I have reinstalled the game... installed new XP and game on drive D....
Same thing.... a program called SpeedswitchXP shows CPU usage fluctuating from 54 to 420 because the CPU mhz on the general tab of my computer shows 422 now, not the 847 mhz it used to.
It still surfs the net and plays yahoo card games eg. at lightning speed but not an online rpg... it has working perfectly at average of 25 fps for 3 years ... Irreparably overheated / damaged CPU ... graphics card ?
Anyone know? Another temp. program shows it running at 64C worth a new motherboard?
Can i get one? Any ideas?

Hi
First of all you have to know that the CPU and the GPU performances are dynamically.
This means that the speed and the performance changes if the temperature rises to a critical level.
This could lead to the worse performance.
In your case the notebook is about 3 years old and I think its time to clean the ventilators to prevent the notebook from the overheating.
You could try to use the professional compressed air spray to get rid of the dust and debris.
Such spays you can purchase from computer dealer.

  • Satellite Pro 4600 Wireless card does not work with WIN2K ?

I have a Satellite Pro 4600 with UK dealer installed PA3070U-1MPC wireless card running with Windows 2000
The wireless client manager finds the network of my wireless router and reports the signal is excellent and I see all green bars swhowing.
However I can't mske a connection, in 'connections' the wireless one says 'network cable is disconnected'
the router works ok with other laptops in my house.
I have latest version of Win2K also have downloaded and installed latest versions of client manager and WLAN card driver for win2k from toshiba website.
The 'toshiba support in Turkey' told me 'I need a different driver for Win2K for my wireless card cause the win2K driver on the toshiba website is not for 'this' wireless card'. I have waited for this for 3 weeks now and have been unable to reach the elusive UK Level 3 support who supposedly have this driver. I have seen on the internet the same wireless card is has been sold as a 'made by toshiba' accessory and it says it is compatible with Wim2K
What do I do next please ? Does this run at all with Win2K , is there 'another driver' and so on ?
    Thanks

    hello
please be more scpecific - what do you mean by 'disconnect the LAN' - I have nothing conneced there anyway ? do you mean 'disable' the LAN even though there is nothing plugged in ? can you please post the exact sequence of this so I can try ir too.
In the meantime my laptop has been to Toshiba for them to sort out at their highest level UK support base. I was hoping my troubles would be over - but no, read below what happened. They are basically saying my win2k is not in order but I had just installed and updated it so right now I haven't a clue what to do next.
START QUOTE of Toshiba Support response:
    Sat Pro 4600
    Serial No: 31474181G
Windows 2000 SP4 (customers build not recovery CD)
BIOS V1.80 not current therefore updated to V2.60
The notebooks wireless card is functional and has the correct driver installed, it also has the correct and latest version of the Wireless Client Manager. The wireless function appears to see the router but will not connect and obtain an IP address. Irrespective of the settings applied within Internet Explorer or the Wireless client manager you cannot obtain a connection. The customer did not have any Toshiba utilities installed such as, Power Saver, Common Modules, Chipset drivers, network device switch, I therefore installed these missing components and updated the BIOS to the most current revision. However despite this the unit will still not connect to the wireless.
I therefore removed the customers HDD and replaced his HDD with a Toshiba loan HDD with a fresh build that I had created. When using the machine with this build the wireless connected without issue and I was able to browse the internet etc. I placed the customers HDD into our machine and the problem with the wireless was replicated on our machine here, therefore the problem is not with the wireless card or any hardware aspect of the machine, the problem lies with the customer's build of Win 2000. I examined for anything obvious but could not find anything, therefore I'm sending this machine back to customer with the advice that his build needs addressing or he needs to reload Win 2000 his machine.
As you can see from the above comments, the machine performs as per specification with loan HDD and fresh build of Win 2000 installed, the problem is only present with you HDD and build in the machine. In addition to this I have replaced the missing screws on the base of the machine ensuring the machine is structure is maintained.

  • Satellite Pro 4600: When I use WEP, I can't make any connection anymore

    Hey everybody,
When I connect my Tohsiba Satellite Pro 4600 via the build-in wireless network card without WEP to an AP, there is no problem, connection is establische and everything is working fine.
When I use WEP, I can't make any connection anymore.
Is there a solution to use 128 Bit WEP encryption on a Thosiba Pro 4600 laptop with the build-in WLAN.
    Thanks in advanced
    Pokettuk

What WLan card do you use?
As far as I know the notebook should be equipped with the Wireless LAN / WiFi Standard: 802.11b ORiNOCO Mini PCI card.
This card supports security 64 WEP or 128 RC4.
Everything looks like you WLan card doesnt support the same security standard like your WLan router. You should understand that this WLan card is an oldie about 7 years old.
I think the best solution is to use the external USB WLan stick which would support the newest encryption standards

  • Problems connecting a Satellite Pro 4600 to home wireless network

    Hi,
My desktop pc has an Athlon 64x2 4200+ processor and 2 GB of RAM, with XP2 Pro. I have a Linksys WRT54GS Broadband Router and am connected with Virgin Media.
My daughter has given me an old laptop, a Satellite Pro 4600 with a Celeron 747MHz Processor, 384MB of RAM and XP2 Pro it has an Intel Pro/100 VE Network adaptor. I have fitted a Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adaptor with SRX (Model No WPC45GX), so that I can use it around the house. However when I try to connect to the home network, although it "finds" a list of networks, I am unable to connect, and get an error message - "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network (my home network). The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available
    networks, and try again."
I have tried connecting with the laptop in the same room as the router, but get the same message. In Device Manager, under Network adaptors, both are shown, and both are working correctly, but in the taskbar there is a red cross shown on both icons, one says that a network cable is unpluged, but I don't have a network cable fitted.
The other tells me that the wireless is not connected.
I presume that the adaptor is working as it can "see" wireless networks, plus I have used Lynksys support to check that all the settings on both Router and Adaptor are correct.
My wife has a new laptop and is able to connect to the home network without any problem.
Please can anyone offer any advice or assistance.

    Hm,
for some reason you should disable your wired (cable) network connection and use the client from the PCMCIA wireless network card. Maybe its just the problem that your system cannot separate between both network connections and gets some error. You should also go to the Linksys website and download the latest driver and client for the card, so you can make sure that software is up-to-date.
Another good idea would be to visit www.microsoft.com and check the support center for any "Knowledgebase documents" which could probably solve the problem.
Since your machine is really old and no-one uses PCMCIA cards anymore, you will maybe wait some long time for an answer in this forum. Maybe you should check the linksys site for some support section. Perhaps they could help you..

  • New DVD drive not recognized on my Satellite Pro 4600

    Hi all,
I have recently bought a brand new NEC ND-6650 DVD writer.
This drive is NOT recognized by my Satellite Pro 4600, at all - neither Windows 2000 nor in the BIOS (v 2.60). Bios updates higher than version 2.60 are not provided.
Does this mean I can forget about using the new writer in my old notebook?
    Thanks and best regards,
    Nils

    Hi Nils,
I suspect that your new drive may be not be compatible with your notebook. As with all optical drives your new drive will be configured as either Slave or Master (or possible cable select), and this configuration must match your notebook.
Usually your hard drive will be configured as Master on IDE channel 0 with your optical drive being the slave device on the same channel. However, you may find that your optical drive is configured as Master on IDE channel 1.
Normally the setting is pre-configured by the manufacturer so you will need to check both the conficuration of your new drive and the configuration of your original drive to make sure that they are the same.
    regards,

  • Satellite Pro 4600 - What is the maximum HDD size?

My aged Satellite Pro 4600 has a 20GB HDD. As these are now very difficult to get hold, does anyone know whether higher capacy HDDs can be used and, if so, what is the maximum size of HDD.
(In spite of it's age I still use the Satellite Pro for certain jobs.)

    Hi!
This is a pretty old notebook, Satellite Pro 4600 ;)
As far as I know this notebook has a 28bit LBA limitation and that means you can only use HDDs up to 128GB or lets say HDD with a capacity of 120GB.
By the way, here you can read more about this limitation: http://www.48bitlba.com/
Normally you can every HDD up to 120GB but dont forget that the HDD must have a IDE connector.
I have good experience with Western Digital and Seagate HDDs.

  • Does CDRW/DVD from Satellite Pro 4600 fitting a 4300 series?

Does anyone know if the CDRW/DVD ROM drives that were fitted to some Satellite Pro 4600 notebooks will fit and can be made to work in the Satellite Pro 4300 series notebooks? Please don't reply by saying contact my local service partner!

    Hi
I am not 100% sure but I believe that it should work but if nobody gives you a precise answer try to ask service partner in your country. Unfortunately there is no public document about hardware upgrade.

  • Does Premiere Pro 2 use graphics card for playback?

Does Premiere Pro 2 use graphics card for playback? I am using a 350W PSU, so my nVidia 6600GT runs in low-power mode, and my video playback in Premiere is choppy. The same .avi files play fine in a media player, so it can't be a disc issue I guess... Please advise, thank you!

Only the latest CS5 uses SELECTED card's GPU for video acceleration
    >same .avi files play fine in a media player
Playback is not at all the same as editing
Use the FREE http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to find out what codec is inside that AVI wrapper
Anything other than DV AVI type 2 with 48khz sound is not going to do well in Premiere

    Update:
Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 has 2 controllers:
    HD is Primary Master
Teac CD224e (cdrom) is Secondary Master (right?)
When I put in Nec ND6500a (which is obviously set to CS-Master) the bios says nothing attached to the Secondary Master (the 2-dary master-controller even disappears in bios/OS)
I noticed reading several fora (and this thread) the ND6500 can bet set to:
    CS-Master
    CS-Slave
    Fixed Slave.
Obviously I need Fixed Master (or am i wrong?)
Is it possible or not to set the ND6500A to (secondary) Fixed Master or not ? Or should I return the drive ?

  • Upgrade from NT to XP on Satellite Pro 4600

is there any chance to upgrade from NT to XP, or can i just install any bootable XP version on my 4600? or does a special XP version for satellite pro 4600 with all the required drivers exist???

    Hi!
I don't know anything about some SPECIAL version of WinXP for yr notebook, but it is possible just upgrade yr NT upto XP. Besides, WinXP has very powerful drivers database, which covers most of devices. There is only one "but": some special features (functional buttons) can be not available.

I doubt you can handle this sort of thing. We can't tell what's going on without being there.
You might try the instructions in KB314477 to reconstruct the boot.ini file.
If you have a Windows installation CD or a floppy drive, you can reach the recovery console.
