Satellite Pro 480CDT will not boot with HDD fitted?

Hi
I have tried several hard drives in my Satellite Pro 480CDT but none of them will boot. The screen stays black and the power led flashes orange (long, short, short, short, short, long, short, short). If I take the drive out the machine goes to the 'In Touch With Tomorrow, TOSHIBA' screen. It will see Windows CDROM or a floppy. I have tried with 6 HDDs all below 6Gb and as far as I know working. I have tried with another 480CDT a 220CS and a 2140CDS. Surely all HDDs and laptops have the same fault? Do I need to update BIOS or something as none of the drives are original to the machines.
Please help!
Thanks
John.

Hi John
I am afraid there is nothing you can do alone. When power supply electronic detects some power problem it sends hexadecimal code. In this case you must contact technicians. They can read this code and will know what is wrong there.
Just for info: I have found out that original HDD for this unit has part number P000244000. Maybe it will help you to obtain some other HDD for tests.
Sorry I can not tell you more about this oldie.

The problem arised after installation of "symantec system works" and trying to restart windows XP professional to make the installed program executable.
What can I do to get the notbook restart again?

    Hi everyone
If you cannot acces to the boot menu by pressing F8 you can try to recover the the master boot record from Windows Xp professional installation Cd, to do this:
Attention: don't run these commands if you have more than one operating systems running in your laptop.
Boot from Windows Xp installation cd
Choose repair installation from console by pressing "C" key.
A console will open asking you for administrator password, insert the password and press enter.
Run de command: FIXMBR (It will write a new boot record)
Run de command: FIXBOOT (It will write a new boot file)
Restart the laptop and now windows should start without problems.

    I bought a Toshiba Laptop Satellite Pro 4340DVD Model # PS434C-3N152, Serial # Y0018185J, off E-Bay.
The original operating system, Win 98SE has been upgraded to Win XP Pro. No disks came with the laptop.
The laptop crashed yesterday while I was online and will not boot-up.
    _Error message reads:_
+The following file is missing or corrupt: System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys.+
Any suggestions on how to rectify this problem will be deeply appreciated. I would very much like to have a users manual for this unit but haven't been able to find one.
    Thanks!

Turns out that the dirty dawg was Anti-Virus 2009 that caused the problem. Managed to get laptop to boot up in "safe mode," found the dirty dawg, deleted it, and the laptop booted right back up.

  • Satellite Pro L300 will not boot after Bios update

    Help please.
I have just formated a Satellite Pro L300 laptop.
I used all the updated drivers from Toshiba and all went very well.
I then updated the bios with the latest version.
After doing this the laptop will not boot but just keeps scrolling through the start menu and no matter what option I choose it just keeps doing the same thing.
    Any ides welcome

    Hi
I used the Microsoft installation disk but just keep getting to the same stage until the blue screen appears. I have tried different installation disks and also changed the hard drives as well. I can do everything in bios, change boot device enable or disable devices but that is it. I have tried a few times to instal windows but it just stops at the same point saying windows is stopping instal to protect the system. I fear the bios update has done some permanent damage as I cant get past the dreaded blue screen. Thanks anyway

  • Satellite Pro A120 will not boot up

    Sorry for bad English!
    My computer will not boot.
I want to install a BIOS but connecting it to another computer but I dont know how?

In my opinion its not a faulty BIOS but I think the virus on your notebook caused this issue.
    The error message says everything:
+Malicious program will access to the read memory+
    +problems on bios+
If you are not able to boot up the notebook, neither from the Recovery CD, bootable CD (XP, Linux) nor from HDD then its a serious issue and you should definitely contact the ASP in your country.
If you are a lucky man then the ASP technician would be able to flash the BIOS ROM using a special procedure and the notebook should function again.
    Bye

Also tried the backspace trick in case but did not do any good.
It just does not start at all.
    Any ideas out there ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
unfortunately all the leds are working fine, no blinking that could point out a problem.
I am afraid that the motherboard might be cooked, I have seen similar symptoms on the net, it seems like a know issue at toshiba.

  • Dv9000 will not boot with hdd in

    Hi,
A friend recently gave me a dv9000 series laptop that had the black screen issue.  I was able to fix that easily enough since it is a well known problem.   He kept the original HDD because he wanted to recover his files.  I bought an SSD and put it into bay 1.  Everything worked fine for about a week - I installed Windows 7 on it and it worked amazing/booted without issue.
Now today it started cycling through its boot sequence.  It stays on the HP Invent splash screen for about 30 seconds, then it power cycles.   If I press Esc or F10 to get into the BIOS settings, it still power cycles.  If I remove the HDD I can get into BIOS, and if I let it run it says Operating System Not Found (which I expected).
I then hooked up a USB HDD with Ubuntu on it, and set the BIOS to boot from it, and it booted just fine into Ubuntu and everything works.
I then tried a 2nd 2.5" HDD in the same bay, and it power cycles as before.   I also tried both 2.5" drives in bay 2 and still power cycles.
    Is this a known issue?
    Any suggestions?
Anybody ever successfully updated the BIOS from Ubuntu?  (or perhaps BartPE?)
Are there any known issues with SSDs or SATA II drives?  This drive does not have jumpers to force SATA I, so wondering if the chipset supports auto-negotiation.  This might be moot since I *think* the 2nd drive is SATA I and not II anyways (it doesn't say and I've had it for about 4 years).

    What SSD do you have?
I had the same issue with my hdd and it was a damaged MBR that caused the problem with freezing on the HP splash screen. I could fix the problem on the hard drive with an installation DVD of Windows 7. I put the hdd into a SATA USB docking station, connected to the laptop and booting up the installation DVD with the recovery option and then command prompt (bootrec commands). However, it has never happened to me on my SSD and I had 4 of them.
You can fix the MBR even from the usb live Ubuntu disk but the internal hard drive (ssd) has to be connected externally to the laptop..
Boot up to the live environment of Ubuntu, install a package called ms-sys and in the terminal type:
    sudo ms-sys --mbr7 /dev/sda
sda replace the actual hard drive you want to fix because it might be sdb as a secondary (usb) drive..

  • 2009 Mac Pro Quad Will Not Boot

    Hi.
I have a 2009 Quad 3.0Ghz Mac Pro that will not boot up.
I went to it this morning and the beach ball was spinning. I could not get it to stop and as a last resort, turned it off. It has been working fine, although
I have noticed a little slow (Could be me, though).
When I tried to reboot it, it tried to start, chime went off, but it stayed on the light grey screen and eventually, it had a folder with a question mark in it
    that blinked.
I disconnected all peripherals, no change.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
    Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Brian

The Chime is generated in Software when the first part of the Power-On Self Test has passed. If an appropriate source of software can be found, booting is likely.
it had a folder with a question mark in it that blinked.
That says it could not find the last-specified source of software. the drive may be damaged, or it may have forgotten where it should be looking.
Tried to boot from the optical drive  with Disk Warrior, no change.
Next try a 10.6 DVD. "A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate Installer/Utilities DVD has a Hardware problem".
One of the simplest things it should be able to do is Startup Manager. Hold down the Alt/Option key at startup and it should draw a gray or blue screen and slowly draw an Icon for each potentially-bootbale device (including a bootable DVD, if inserted).

I have a MacBook Pro that will not boot up. The apple symbol is there and the spinning wheel keeps spinning. Any idea how I can fix this?

    Reinstall OS X.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    OR
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • More detail and a reply for the CQ50 - 130US will not boot with 8gb ram post

The specs, on the web site say that the  max memory supported is 3GB DDR2 because the notebook was built with the OS Vista(32 bit) installed so that’s why the manual has the 3 GB max. memory supported limit. The 32 bit OS can’t address memory over 3.12 GB.   To my mind that is not a spec. but rather a tech. writer who made a mistake and copied the sales literature.  With Windows 7(64 bit) Pro. installed the OS can address up to192GB of memory if the system supports it.  Other Compaq and HP Notebooks can deal with 8GB of memory installed. That’s why I would think HP’s could easily fix this with a patch or use one of their other BIOS’s.
The difference between 4GB and 6GB is that with 6GB system runs faster and the display quality has improved.  I have set the cache size to large and the executive paging is set to off in the registry. The menu(System Properties - Performance Options – Advanced – Virtual Memory) is set to automatically manage the paging file size.

You should keep it in the original; thread you started.

  • MBP15 1.83 GHz Will Not Boot With 3GB Upgrade

I'm trying to increase my MBP's ram to the 3GB limit. This is a 1.83 GHz 15" model.
It will not boot with 2GB & 1GB sticks of identical mfg & specs. It will boot with one or the other...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Stradioti

    Hi
according to the Apple specs for the 1.83GHz mbp's - 2Gig of memory is the limit......
512MB (single SODIMM) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory on 1.83GHz configuration; and 1GB (single SODIMM) on 2.0GHz configuration; two SODIMM slots support up to 2GB
    Crucial Memory says the same.

What lead_org is referring to is commonly known as "re-balling" which involves unsoldering the Southbridge chip from the planar, replacing all (6-700) solder balls with new ones and then re-attaching it under heat/pressure.

Yes the original Install Discs can be replaced for a nominal fee. Call AppleCare, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the machine. You can use the AppleCare Contact Info for the phone number on your part of the planet.

  • HP G62 Will Not Boot With Power Cord Plugged In

I have an HP G62 laptop that is about four years old. I've had a couple of problems with it before that were resolved relatively satisfactorily, however five or six months ago I started having a new issue. The laptop will not boot with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. Nor will it return from sleep mode (screen black, status light on the power button flashing) with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. It simply shuts down and I end up with an error screen the next time I boot up. I have tried other charging cords and it has been the same, however the cord will still charge the battery. This means I have to charge the battery, unplug the cord, boot up the computer. This annoyance is worsened by the fact that the battery  is old and unable to  hold charge for very long at all and I fear one day even the battery won't be enough to boot the computer. Can I fix the power cord issue? Should I buy a new battery? Or let my computer give up the ghost and scrounge for a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the charger input could possibly need replaced and/or the charger

  • 2008 mac pro will not boot with HD 5770 installed.

Does anyone have suggestions for this.  When I say it will not boot, I mean it will not respond at all to the power button if the card is installed (or at least if the power cord for the card is plugged into the motherboard.  This is a mac pro version 3,1 with 8 cores 2.8 xeon, 22GB ram, running 10.6.8.  Boots fine with xt2600 but will not boot if the 5770 power cord is plugged in. THis is an apple specific card from B and H.  Perhaps I received a bad card.  I have tried with and without the xt2600 installed and have tried in slots 1 and 2.  I do not have any other PCI cards installed.  Iknow this is not an "officially supported card" but it seems to work for everyone else.

Sounds like the ATI 5770 issue to me.
And 5770 worked on 1000s and 1000s of Mac Pro all models, like mine a 1,1 (there is even a thread of 160+ posts)
Where did you buy the cable and card, if from Apple and it is recent, exchange.
You are saying you never got to work...
