Satellite Pro A120 - Second hard drive on secondary IDE channel

Hello
I have a Satellite Pro A120 xp sp3.
I've been trying to get it to recognise a 2nd hard drive on the secondary ide channel but it won't. Cd drive has been removed and replaced with one of these, the with the pata to sata interface.
[http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_27&produc ts_id=245]
The second hard drive is a seagate sata 500 GB drive. Drive is spinning and recieving power but not showing up in storage management or device manager.
In the Bio's (uptodate) it shows me this but won't let me edit it.
Drives I/O
Built in HDD = serial ATA port 0
CD rom = Secondary ide (170H - IRQ 15)
To me the hardware is capable of supporting two HDD's as long as you remove cd drive but it seems like the bio's is locking me out of deselecting CD rom on the second IDE channel.
Please could some one point me in the right direction to resolve this.
Thanks
Zander

Thanks for the help.
Ok I followed what you said and this is what happens.
Uninstalled CD drive in device manager.
boot to bios with out 2nd hard drive in the slot. Bios shows no secondary IDE channel or hard drive
As soon as I push in the 2nd hard drive caddy and boot it says CD error, doesn't show in windows or device manager. Bios shows CD drive again. Also the CD drive is reinstalled in the device manager.
Tried it with original HDD with operating system on it in the 2nd hard drive bay and it won't boot, looks for bootable device but can't read it.
Why does it only see the cd drive! Annoying.
Any more ideas?

  • Re: Satellite Pro A120 - CD/DVD drive doesnt work anymore

Hi, I have a Satellite Pro A120, and keep on having problems with my CD/DVD driver. I spoke to few of you on the phone, the fix it solution on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 seems to do the trick for a couple of hours and then I am back to square one.
Today, I think I have reached the end of my possibilities, the solution above no longer works, I have a message that says that it doesn't work for the specifications of my PC.
In the meantime, something must have happened because my webcam, that I have since 2007, no longer works either, and in spite of the fact that I have tried time and time again to install those drivers, the PC just won't allow me.
    It's a dead end really...
And... yes, I have done the business of going to Device Manager, disable the CD/DVD driver facility etc....
    Thanks for your help

When you remove CD/DVD drive from the device manager after restart it should be recognized again. Can you use it after doing this?

  • Satellite Pro A120-10W - Function keys not working since hard drive wipe

    Hello,
I have a Satellite Pro A120-10W running Windows XP Pro SP3, and have just had my hard drive wiped, because of viruses. Everything seems to work fine, but I cant use the function keys to change the brightness etc. I have looked at various help forums however most seem to give answers for Windows 7 or vista. 7
    Can someone help please?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello
As you can see in other threads, you need special drivers/tools for FN keys to get them working because there is no Windows standard driver for these keys.
Anyway, you have to download Common Modules as Akuma wrote. After installation the keys should start working again.
You can download the tools on official Toshiba website.
If you have problems with installation or it was successful, just post some feedback. ;)

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.

  • Installing windows 7 on second hard drive in macbook pro 7

Dear fellow forumers. I am currently having trouble installing windows 7 on my second hard disk as whenever I restart my laptop after the bootcamp assistant has made a partition in the HDD, instead of going into windows installation, my laptop screen shows a blank/black screen with a blinking dash at the top corner. I am currently using a 15" macbook pro 2011, installed an OWC ssd as my primary hard drive where I run my os Lion and windows (in another partition). Due to insufficient disk space with the applications in both OS, i am now attempting to install a second windows 7 in a second hard drive which I split the HDD equally into two partitions (one formatted for windows installation and the other for data storage). Just for the information, I am also installing the windows 7 via an external optical drive.
I have been running out of wits as I have been researching whole night about possible oslution but it seems that my problem is quite a peculiar one. Will really appreciat any help that I could receive.
lastly, is it possible to run parallel desktop from my ssd (Primary hard drive) and then attempt to import the bootcamp from my second hard drive?

Well it's not particularly hard, I just don't see why its necessary. It seems silly that I've got to physically start removing hardware from my computer just to get an OS to install on a specific drive.
I was under the impression the Boot Camp gave the option of where to install Windows, as in other drives from the ones with OSX on them.

  • Best way to format a second hard drive in a MacBook Pro?

I put a SSD in my MacBook Pro and I am wondering what is the best way to format the hard drive that i am putting in the place of the optical drive. I could set it put in raid configuration but I'm pretty sure that it takes the speed from the slower drive. Making my upgrade pointless. Should I put the hard drive in and format it to Mac OS extended (journaled). Is this my best option. Will i only be able to put applications on the second hard drive or will i only be able to put on files such as media, word docs ect.?

    Hello,
I read some of your responces to other computer issues. Do you have any thoughts that may help my situation. I posted this earlier. I try to use my OS X HD to reinstall but I only get so far and I am told install can't go any further.
    Detailed Discription;
    Everything is running-phizz-black screen
Start button-enter password-gray bar at bottom of screen-
Gray bar fills 1/4 - computer shuts off
So I looked around on wifes computer and find a few sequences to try and fix.
    didn't work.
So I am here now after accessing reinstall  from my os x disc and a couple other discs to choose from.
    Nothing is working-need help
    Past history;
from the begining my mac never carried a charge. Then it stopped charging completely.
I just lived with it-but now this-christ man it ticks me off.

  • I had a second hard drive added to my Mac Pro.  How do I format it and not effect my orginal hard drive?

I had a second hard drive added to my Mac Pro.  How do I format it and not effect my orginal hard drive?

Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above.  Select the new disk on the list at the left.  Click the erase tab.  Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice.  Then click the erase button.
That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase.  You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition.  Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click Apply button to create the partitions.
Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them.  So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose.  You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.

  • Re: How to use the second hard drive in Satellite A300?

I have been given a second hand Satellite A300 that was being thrown out due to a faulty DVD.
I fixed the DVD and have a perfect working system.
On opening the case I discovered it has 2 x 250GB hard drives. I checked CMOS and the 2 drives show. Yet, Vista only shows the one drive.
Excuse my ignorance but how do I access the second drive?

I have Satellite A300 with two hard drives and each HDD has other operating system. Both HDDs are recognized properly.
I dont know what is wrong there but both HDDs should be recognized automatically.
Try to set BIOS to default settings and check it again.
Try to start bootable Microsoft installation disc and check if both HDDs are shown in setup.
I just hope there is no some hardware problem.

  • Time Machine not backing up system files on second hard drive

The system files are not being included in my time machine backups on my primary drive (an internal SSD) but they are for my secondary drive (an internal HDD).  I want to revert the system back to a previous state because of a change I made to the Audio folder in Libraries that may have cause an issue. When I look at the backup on my backup disk, the folder isn't even included on the SSD (the drive I made changes to).  Is it hidden or just left out?  I checked the Time Machine preferences and there are no folders listed to be excluded.
    1) Does this mean that I will not be able to do a full system restore from these Time Machine backups?
    2) How can I include those files in future backups?
    Thanks!
    System information:
    MacBook Pro Mid 2012
    OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
240 GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD (Main Bay)
750 GB Apple HDD (Optical Bay)

I apologize, the title of this thread is misleading. I meant it to say "on primary hard drive", not "second hard drive".  Sorry for any confusion.

  • Really erasing second hard drive

My Mac Pro won't recognize a second hard drive as a second hard drive. Mac insists on seeing both drives (startup and secondary) as one volume, and then won't list the drives as WD drives in Finder. They are listed in Disk Utility as WD 6400 and WD 5000, correctly. But I want them separated--so that, for instance, Time Machine doesn't object when I try to back-up on the second drive, informing me I'm about to back up on the same volume as the system.
I've tried erasing in Disk Utility, but can't erase without also formatting--either HFS or FAT 32. That is, I can't seem to be rid of the disk. I need a disk that's clean, like new, so the computer will see it that way.
Thanks very much for any suggestion(s),

Well, actually I found what I needed really to erase the drive. Zeroing out in MAC didn't work as even doing that leaves the drive formatted as HFS or FAT. As I noted, there is no choice in Disk Utility. (It took 1 hour, 15 minutes.) It is possible to erase all formatting.
I found a utility at Western Digital that allows for what's called "low-level" formatting, which really erases all formatting. I was able to use the utility in my Bootcamped Windows. When I looked at it afterward in Snow Leopard, Disk Utility showed a disk blanked out--no formatting of any kind, exactly as when shipped from WD. Even though both Mac and Windows recognized the drive and were able to initialize the disk. Disk Utility "saw" the drive regardless of no formatting type. Which was correct. Windows displayed the disk as "unallocated," also correctly. (I couldn't find a way in Windows either to do what I wanted. All that seems to be offered is "Delete Partition," which was useless.)
So I got done what I wanted to do. Alas, that did not help, not even after doing a fresh reinstall of Snow Leopard. I then repartitioned--into four--the disk, using HFS Extended for two and MS-DOS FAT for two. Happily, one can do this in Mac's Disk Utility, since this cannot be done in Windows Disk Manager, which mostly doesn't recognize HFS at all, let alone format a disk with it. But Disk Manager does allow easy conversion of FAT to NTFS, which is what I did with the two partitions formatted FAT in Disk Utility.
These procedures all went smoothly enough, no problems. Two partitions for Time Machine and other Mac files, two for Windows Back-up and other Windows files. Perfect, except that Mac, except in Disk Utility, keeps reporting that two hard drives as one "volume," apparently not unlike in a RAID configuration, so I was told. (I don't have a RAID card nor want one.)
I can still do a Time Machine back-up but don't know what might happen should I ever have to restore from one. It's just very odd that Snow Leopard doesn't recognize two separate hard drives installed in two different bays, though it does in Disk Utility. Very strange!

I bought an HP Pavilion 500 - 319na desktop in summer and want to install a 2nd hard drive. There are spare connections on the board and the power cable to the internal hard drive has a spare connection. From what I read it needs to be SATA 3. I have read conflicting advice on this board.  Some say yes, some say no.
OK, there seems to be only one bay (a poor oversight by HP) but provided I find a way of securing another drive is there any reason why it should not work.
From what I read it should be max 2Tb's.
I want a definitive answer please!
    Win 8.1 64 bit.
This is the hard drive I plan to buy.  The spec says XP, Vista, Win 7, but am I right in thinking it should work with win 8.1

You can obtain 3.5" hard drive cage from here for $11 shipped.  Granted it has a 120mm fan and space for 4 drives, but for the price, you can mod/cut all you want.
Now your other issue/question:  You will want a SataIII 6GB/sec drive 2TB, 7200 RPM.
