Satellite Pro A200 (PSAF4A) - HDD stops and computer crashes

Hello
This is my first post in this forum but definitely not my first issue
I recently had to re-install Windows Vista on my Laptop because I had an undetectable virus that attacked Windows and rendered it useless.
Before then I had many, many start-up errors and windows crashes but all of which were avoidable or fixable. After the re-install I noticed the stability of windows was much better until recently.
I have not changed any settings or anything what so ever on my Laptop that could affect performance in any way but I am having new problems occur.
If I have my computer running, performing basic tasks for a few or more hours I notice the performance drops and suddenly my computer will completely stop responding.
The disc doesn't show any sign of life after this point and its only solution is a "Disruptive Shutdown".
This shows up in the Reliability and Performance monitor as just that, there are no errors shown before it and nothing is done after.
I have also noticed if either windows defender or my other virus protection runs a system scan my performance is reduced to the point where I can not perform as simple a task as open an explorer window. This also results in complete non-responsiveness. This never happened before about a week ago and now it happens every time.
Both of these started within the last few days and there is no obvious reasoning behind it. My CPU idle is still the same, no new processors added and no settings changed.
Could this be a problem with Windows, my HDD, my CPU or something worse?
Is there a reason why this might be happening and is there a fix for either of these problems?

First of all, did you reinstall Windows with the Toshiba recovery disk or Microsoft disk?
This is strange and not easy to say what is wrong but in your case I would test the HDD and RAM.
There are special tools to test these parts:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
http://memtest86.com/
On both website you can download a CD image. Burn it on a CD, boot from it and then you can test the parts.
Good luck!

  • Cannot install WinXP on Satellite Pro A200 - No HDD

    Hi,
Please can someone help me. I've just brought 52 Satellite Pro A200 laptops. They come with Vista pre-installed, but I want to wipe them and install Windows XP. However I have a big problem - when I put my XP CD in and boot from it and click Enter to continue, it tells me that the Installation cannot continue as Windows found no hard drives (although I can boot in Vista so I know the HDD are ok).
    Thanks for looking,

I too had the HDD problem. Its because there are no drivers on the XP CD for SATA hard drives. What you have to do is use some free software called NLite and merge the SATA drivers with the files off the XP CD. (It really is ace). Available at
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/nLite.shtml
Read this page it tells you exactly how to do it.(
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml). If I can manage it then anyone can. Using the NLite software you copy the contents of your XP CD to your hard drive. Then you download the SATA drivers (available from the tosh site), then you integrate the drivers with your XP CD files. Finally you create an ISO image and burn it to CD. When you then boot off your new CD and install XP, it detects the SATA drive. Hey Presto!!!

  • Satellite Pro A200 PSAFCA: Need Lan and display driver for XP

    Hey
    please help me!
I have just installed XP on my new satalite pro, but i have had trouble with the drivers.
At the moment I have installed most but from this site i can't seem to find a driver that will help my network card, nor my video NIVIDIA drive...
any suggestions would be very valuable

The Satellite Pro A200 PSAFCA is not known to me. I know only the Satellite Pro A200 PSAE1, PSAE4 and PSAE7. So could you please confirm your Pro A200 series?!
If you cannot find the single XP drivers on the Toshiba page I would recommend checking the LAN and the graphic chip which is installed on the motherboard and use the XP drivers from the chip manufacture.
If you need an graphic driver I would recommend using the drivers from the www.omegadrivers.net or www.laptopvideo2go.com site

  • Memory upgrade on Satellite Pro A200

Have two Satellite Pro A200 #PSAE1E-00T002EN laptops and wanted to know if I can upgrade the 2 x 1GB memory to 2 x 2GB?

As I understand you request, you want to upgrade the notebooks memory to 4GB.
Well, I think its not possible.
The Satellite Pro A200 supports max 2GB RAM (2 x 1GB) so you will be not able to use 2 x 2GB modules.

  • [Satellite Pro A200] - slowness during data transfer and heat problems.

    Hi folks.
I have a 1.5 y.o Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 with standard 200GB HDD. Since some time its behaviour is just... weird.
Sometimes system slows. It just behaves sluggish, it frequently freezes for a second during simple tasks such as entering the text. It;s more frequent during intensive data transfers (such as copying files through FTP from my LAN or copying from pendrive) but sometimes it happens even when no other app than the Firefox is working. It's not that apparent, so I wonder - will service take it under warranty conditions (which means - is there a probability that they'll say that everything is perfect and charge me for this?)
The computer was on the warranty repair once, they replaced HDD with other one. Is it possible that the other one has some troubles as well (S.M.A.R.T. check discovers nothing). Or maybe it's faulty SATA controller?
Other thing is the temperature. During normal work (Internet, MS Word) both cores works at 60*C. When gaming the temperature can rise above 90*C and the computer sometimes shuts down. I assume that the problem is the dust accumulated inside the laptop but I can't see how can I clean it up.
Would you go to the service with such problems?

Virus scanners can slow a system down considerably, what Virus Scanner are you using?
If you have many programs installed, maybe its time to backup your data and reinstall Windows. I do it myself every year since Windows tends to get bloated and slow after a while.
As for the dust, you can blow it out using a Can of compressed Air sprayed through the main air vent (while the system is off).
Or if the dust buildup is really bad, you may need to send it to an Authorised Service Provider to get it dismantled and cleaned up.

  • Product recovery problems on Satellite Pro A200

    Hi
I have a Satellite Pro A200. It is running very slowly and sometimes it freezes up when I log on.
Also the homepage has been hijacked and I have tried several anti spyware programs and they have not worked.
I have the product recovery disc but the problem the DVD rom drive has stopped working.
The light is on but it will not open unless I use the manual release.
I have removed it and checked the connections but it seems o.k.
The DVD/CD rom has disappeared from the device manager and does not show up under hardware.
I have tried system restore but this also will not work.
Is there anyway you can use the product recovery software if you boot from a USB key?
I have tried restarting the computer and choosing boot from CD but it will not give me that option.
I have looked in the bios and the only boot options that it gives are harddrive, CD rom, land and FDD

    > Is there anyway you can use the product recovery software if you boot from a USB key?
No, this Toshiba Recovery disk cannot be copied to USB flash memory stick and used for OS installation. Im afraid this would not work.
But if youve got an Microsoft Windows CD you should be able to create an bootable USB flash memory stick. In internet you will find many useful step by step instructions how to create such bootable USB stick.
But booting from USB flash memory stick should be definitely possible since the BIOS supports following bootable devices:
USB FDD, HDD, ODD, Network(LAN), USB Memory

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Hard Drive has lost half it's memory

I have a toshiba Satellite Pro A200 running Vista. Vista came preloaded and I don't have any discs for it. I have had it since new (Sept 2007). The hard drive is split into drives. Recently my C drive has competely filled up and I now have no space left (55gigs gone) I store no data in this drive. All my media (music, photos, other files) is in my E drive. I have to run C Cleaner each time I boot up in order to have enough space to operate the computer. I also have to delete all but the most recent restore point in order to function.
I am at my wits end and think I must have a virus or something. Is there a way to restore the computer to 'new'? I have all my files backed up on an external hard drive so I don't mind starting from scratch. Bearing in mind I have no install discs as Vista came pre-loaded.
    Can anyone help????? please!

If you don't have any disc and if you didn't get any disc with your notebook that means your notebook was delivered with HDD recovery image and this image is saved on second HDD partition in folder called HDDRecovery.
Recovery disc can be created using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator. I don't know if you still have all this.
The whole story with HDD is somehow strange to me. If your notebook has two partitions and partition C is full I am asking myself what is with second partition. It must be pretty empty.
What is capacity of second HDD partition?
What is free space on this second partition?
You wrote about E drive. What is E drive?
You must understand that nobody of us know what are you doing exactly, what programs are installed on your notebook. You wrote about no saving data on partition C. Maybe you are wrong about it. Maybe you download many torrents and they are saved somewhere on HDD. who knows?
Do you have some friends with good PC knowledge? Try to find someone who can take a look onto preinstalled system and check what is going wrong there.

  • Satellite Pro A200: How to create Dual boot; Vista & XP using Recovery CD

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro A200 lap-top, which was supplied with Product Recovery disks for both Vista and XP.
The Vista licence specifically also licences XP.
Can I set up a dual boot so that I can boot to either Vista or XP ? If so, how?
I would also like, as a third boot, Red Hat Linux 9.
    Any comments ?

Hmmm. Usually its possible to use two or more operating systems on the computer but as far as I know the Toshiba Vista Recovery CD formats the whole HDD during the Vista installation and this will lead to losing of the installed OS's.
Im not 100% sure about the XP Recovery CD The newest CD called RECO doesnt include expert mode which allows choosing between different partitions.
So I presume every usage of the Recovery CD will format the HDD and will erase the installed data. But of course you could try to install both OS and to check if the XP recovery CD allows choosing second portion for the OS installation.
If it will not function it seems that you will need either an original Microsoft XP CD or the original Vista CD to use both OS.

  • Re: Satellite Pro A200 - Screen goes black after BIOS screen

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have quite a big problem. So any help is welcome and appreciated.
My Satellite Pro A200 goes black after the BIOS screen and a black screen with a blinking cursor. Also just before the screen goes black a bleep can be heard which shows windows is booting.
I can access the toshiba set-up screen but not the safety mode set-up.
    Kind Regards

    Hello
You wrote that you can access the BIOS but have you checked if the HDD is recognized properly? Maybe the computer cannot boot because HDD isnt recognized so you should check this.
If the HDD is recognized I would try a recovery installation from Toshiba recovery disk. It seems that Windows isnt able to start and if you reinstall the whole system it should help to get rid of this. Just go in boot menu and select CD/DVD drive as boot device.
    Check this!!!

You can use either the HDD recover or the Recovery disk.
If HDD recover does not work and if you dont have the disk then you could order this here:

  • What internal HD can I use on my Satellite Pro A200 PSAE1E-01700EN5

I need to replace my laptop's broken internal HD. I was wondering, what internal HD can I get for Satellite Pro A200 PSAE1E-01700EN5?
The only one available for me to order for cheap is 250Gb large, but will my laptop support it? I had 80Gb previously.

I don't understand why you think your notebook is old generation. Between your A200 and my A300 is not much difference.
Both use the same HDD. My Satellite A300 has maybe other hardware platform and thats all.
I am 100% sure you can use 250 GB HDD in your Satellite A200.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Is 26 minutes of battery life normal?

    Hi All,
My Satellite Pro A200 laptop is just over 1.5 years old (or young :P) and I have a huge problem with the battery - it only lasts for a total of _26 minutes_ under "high performace" mode in Vista - other power modes increase the time by only 5-7 minutes.
I have tweated the system setup to:
    - run as few programs at startup;
    - to use as little memory in relation to graphics (as in diabled vista themes, and "fancy" operations such as show contents of window whilst dragging).
    - remain on the lowest brightness level.
The programs that do run on startup are my anti virus (F-Secure), and ATI catalyst control.
I have also cleaned the registry of any conflicts and regularly virus scan.
I have used Ubuntu on this laptop as well and the battery life is not that much better, which brings me to the conclusion that the battery is nearing its end.
I was wondering if this battery life time (26 minutes max on high performace) is normal for a laptop after only 1.5 years?* (I don't remember how long it lasted when I first bought it).
Also, I have a laptop from other manufacturer of 2 years and the charge of its battery lasts a minimum of 4 hours (on Windows XP).
Both notebooks batteries are 6 cell.
Any suggestions of how to improve my battery life?
    Thanks in advance.

    >Satellite Pro A200 laptop is just over 1.5 years old and I have a huge problem with the battery - it only lasts for a total of 26 minutes under "high performace" mode in Vista
The battery working time depends on different factors:
If different hardware parts like CPU, GPU, HDD, ODD, display are running with highest performance then your battery working time will decrease dramatically
Additionally if you would lose an stronger battery (9 cell or 12 cell) then you should be abele run the notebook much longer using battery power.
Furthermore the battery loses the own performance systematically and after a long time of usage you will have to replace the battery.
However, if you want you could check the Vista Power Options in order to increase the battery working time:
    Here is a nice article:
How to handle the power management features of Windows Vista
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD84026Q0000R01.htm
But in worst case you will need a new, stronger battery

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Supervisor Password Utility Setup fails

    Hello,
I own a Satellite Pro A200-PSAE7E and a retail license for Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit (with SP1) installed on it.
Before installing Vista, I upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version available on the Toshiba site (http://it.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/vista_drivers.jsp?service=IT).
    BIOS version is now 2.20-WIN32
After the successful installation of the operating system, I started installing the various drivers and utilities downloading them from the Toshiba site.
When I try to install the "Supervisor Password Utility" the setup fails showing a message box which says "The serial number is invalid".
Same problem with another setup: "Flash Cards Support Utility"
Does anybody know how to solve this problem and which serial number is invalid?
    Thanx in advance,
    mme000

    Hi,
You are having the same trouble as other people on these forums.
If you want to fix it yourself, you would need to look at the disk image on the disk that came with your toshiba, figure out which version of the application was included on that, you might be able to find that version on the website for a different model and different country (for instance, on the canadian website, for a totally different computer than my UK computer, i found a version of the flashcards support utility that works with mine.) But i don't think its possible to see what's on the restore disk without instaling it, i.e. wiping everything off your harddrive in the process.
It really is extremely disappointing and frustrating. If anyone knows a way to communicate directly with toshiba about this problem without having to pay some sort of support fee, I would be very interested to hear about it. It seems noone from toshiba actually reads anything from these forum. It seems like a real wasted resource to me....

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Shows only 3GB instead 4GB RAM

    Hi,
2 years ago I got a Satellite Pro A200 as a business notebook and it runs with XP SP2, later with SP3. With 2 GB it shows 2 GB of memory in Windows - and I know it has a Radeon 7500 with 256MB of individual graphic memory, and it has no shared memory.
I upgraded it to 4 GB, but Windows shows exactly 3 GB. BIOS shows 4 GB and the ATI system monitor shows 4 GB. I know that 4 GB is not possible in XP 32 bit, only on Windows 2003 R2 32 bit or Vista - but on desktop systems I have seen values between 3.3 and 3.7 GB.
So where is the memory? It looks like a bug - the memory chips have both 2 GB I have verified this. Because it is a company notebook I can't just upgrade to XP 64 bit :-(
In the BIOS are no options - first I thought it's the graphic card, but mine has independant graphics with own memory so the computer comes up with 2048 MB or 4096 after the upgrade.
Shared memory would show about 1900 MB of RAM to the OS like my private EEEpc.

First of all 32bit OS (no matter if its XP, Win 2003 R2, Vista or Win 7) will not recognize 4GB RAM but only 3.2GB (and not 3.7GB)
I have no idea where you looked for available RAM but you should run DXDIAG in RUN.
Then you should get some details and also the available RAM.
Secondly the graphic card supports Local cache (256MB) and HyperMemory.
HyperMemory of the graphic card depends on the available main RAM memory.
For example the unit supports 1024MB RAM (1GB) then the hyper memory would be 256MB this part of RAM would be shared with graphic card!
This is the reason why the only 3GB are shown...

  • Satellite Pro A200 doesn't charge if running

    Hello
I have a new Toshiba Satellite Pro A200 running Vista. I have a problem with the mains adapter and charging.
It will boot up and operate fine, and when switched off will charge the battery on mains fine. But when switched on, the machine automatically runs off battery, not mains, and does not charge.
This means that the battery runs down and eventually has to be charged again whilst off.
When the mains adapter is removed and reinserted, it initially will charge for maybe 30 seconds, then stops charging again and continues to run off battery.
At the same time, the blue indication light on the front of the machine lights up to indicate that the AC is connected and detected, and on the battery indicater on windows in states 'ac connected, battery not charging' - in other words it the ac works and is detected but the machine isnt using it to run power or charge unless switched off..
    Can anyone offer a solution?
    thanks

Thats very strange and I presume this issue could be related to the hardware problem.
Either its a faulty battery or there is something wrong with the power supply electronic on the motherboard.
In my opinion there is only one way to find out whats wrong some diagnostic test are necessary.
Such test can be performed only by an ASP technician.
Therefore its really advisable to contact an ASP in your country for some checks.
This is a new notebook and the warranty should cover everything!
