Satellite Pro L20 won't start up on battery

Hi
I have a Sat Pro L20 and it wouldn't start up on battery; I have to plug it into the mains to work. It says the battery level is at 88%. The laptop is less than a years old so i don't think there's a problem with the battery.
Thanks.

Maybe there something wrong with the power supply electronic on the motherboard???
According to you info the warranty should be valid. So contact the Asp in your country immediately and ask for further handling.
Good luck

  • Satellite Pro 460 won't start with new hard drive in

I recently got a Satellite Pro 460 but it had no hard drive in.
It starts great with no drive in but as soon as I put a brand new hard drive in it won't start.
I thought that it might be to new a hard drive so I took my old working drive out my old Toshiba Satellite and still it won't start.
Any one got any ideas why this is and what can i do about it

It sounds like 80GB is too large for that model, I really doubt the BIOS and Chipset can support more than 8GB HDD. 8GB may not even work.
Here is some information regarding different HDD modes and limitations: http://www.adminxp.com/hardware/index.php?aid=129
504MB - limitation where the system is limited by the compatibility with the values of the BIOS system and the ATA interface by help of using the CHS mode. This limitation is valid for older computers 286/386/486. (1024 cyl 16 heads x 63sectors/track x 512 = 528,482,304bytes - 504 MB). In many cases special programs will help (Disk Ontrack Manager - Seagate, Disk Wizard - WD). Some operating systems can have problems with this software support and can have higher requirements on your knowledge of the OS and used programs.
2GB - Limitation of the maximal value of the FAT16 file system partition for DOS and Windows 9x. Some older computers cannot address more than 4095 cylinders (4,095 x 16 x 63x 512 - 2,113,413,120 bytes)
4GB Limitation of Windows NT - Partition with the FAT16 system cannot be higher than 4GB - Fdisk cannot be used for creating, but the Disk manager is used (Disk management in Windows 2000)
8GB - Limitation of the BIOS system. For the support of larger capacities you need extended functions of the BIOS system. Limitations valid for the x86 computers and some motherboards with Pentium and Pentium II processors. Some other operating systems must know how to use the extended BIOS functions (Extended Interrupt 13). We can use Windows NT 4.0 as an example where you need an updated disk driver or the Service Pack. (OS - DOS 6.xx and lower, Windows 3.x and lower and some other older OS do not have the support of the Ext. Int13).
8 GB - Limitation of the FDISK program in the DOS 6.22 OS.
?? GB - Possible problem with disks larger than 67GB under Windows 9x... See article WD800
    32GB - (65535 x 16 x 63 x 512 - 33,822,351,360 bytes) other limitation of the BIOS system.
68GB - Possible problem with disks larger than 67GB under Windows 9x... See article WD800
137GB - Limit for the ATA specifications (28-bit addressing for particular sectors - 268435455 sectors - 137,438,952,960 bytes)
2,2 TBytes - 32-bit addressing used by new operating systems (in Windows 98 by help of the FAT32 file system).
144 PetaBytes - a limit for new ATA specification using 48-bit addressing, in peparation. Maxtor, Microsoft, VIA, Compaq and other companies under name Big Drives participate the development. The standard should be implemented and authorized by the ANSI NCITS T13 Technical Committee organization (www.t13.org) in the prepared ATA/ATAPI-6 standard (see www.maxtor.com/bigdrive)

  • Satellite Pro L300 won't start

I have got a Satellite Pro L300 laptop and it will not do anything on startup (in other words on pressing the power button and not going past very first screen).
The keyboard works, but F2 ,F8 or F12 won't do anything, I can here the hard-drive powerup but its like no-one is at home. I don't know if its the motherboard or the on-board battery. The computer is about 7-8 yrs old
    Can anyone help.

Yes, this it correct; the Ram modules should be checked. In my opinion you should use good, tested modules.
Some years ago my notebook did not boot up because one of the modules died.
This affected the notebook functionality and display stayed black even pressing the power button.
At the other hand you could try this simple workaround. Sometimes this helps too:
    - remove battery, disconnect AC adaptor
    - press and hold the power button 30 sec long
    - connect both parts battery and ac adaptor and power up the unit.
    Good luck

  • Satellite Pro P200 won't start up

I have a 1 week old Satellite Pro P200, it turned itself off when i was just in the start menu so i wasnt doing anything out of the norm (power cable was plugged in). Since then it simply wont turn on.
With the power cable plugged in I have a blue power, battery and power supply light (although for approx 2 restart attempts the battery light was red, but now blue). The drive light flickers for about 3 seconds each time i try to boot and I can hear something happening inside the machine, but after that 3 seconds....nothing, totally dead.
I have tried removing the battery, waiting 20 minutes or so and none of that has worked. Anybody got any ideas??

Seems to be definitely an hardware problem... very bad :(
Why you don't visit your notebook dealer again and ask for the swap.
Maybe the dealer will exchange the laptop with a new one.
If not, then you will have to contact the authorized service provider in your country for a help.
If you have bought an additional on-site service then the technician will visit you at home and will try to solve this issue.
    Good luck

  • Satellite Pro 2100 won't start at all - LED start flashing

My SP2100 has started having power problems, and now won't start at all. The AC adapter green LED is on, as are the relevant lights on the laptop body (although the 'battery charging' light always stays orange these days). When I attempt switch on, boot up starts (and has in fact been successful on occasion until this morning), however the battery indicator and the adapter lights start flashing, and everything shuts down again.
On the rare occasions when I get past this stage, the lights keep flashing, and the system soon shuts down again with a 'low battery' screen message. Until this morning, it would sometimes settle down, the computer stayed on, and the lights showed a steady state as normal.
I initially thought that the problem was obviously the battery or the AC adapter, but now I'm beginning to think that it lies with laptop's internal power adapter (although I suspect that the battery is probably shot following all this part charging and discharging).
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
I think you are right. Flashing LEDs are a sign that some hardware is faulty.
I can't say what's exactly the problem, this should be checked by a technicain.
On the other side I'm not sure if it is worth to repair such an old machine.
    Bye

  • Hotkey prompts at start up on Satellite Pro L20

    Hi,
Every time my laptop starts (Satellite Pro L20) I get a prompt for hotkey, can anybody tell me how to stop this happening all the time.
Thanks for all your help in advance
    Rob

Yeah sorry about that, after I posted the message I reallised I should have been more specific as to the nature of the prompt.
Anyway when my laptop starts I get the hotkey prompt of " Display a standby confirmation if Fn+F3 is pushed" and also "Display a Hibernation confirmation if Fn+F4 is pushed" This is in the form of a pop up box with tick box's next to them.
I hope this is of help in explaining the fault, I did do a screen print of the messsage but I dont seem to be able to add it to the message.
    Cheers Rob

  • Number Lock Problem on Satellite Pro L20

We have about 60 Satellite Pro L20s on a network. When the user starts the computer sometimes they start with the number lock on. Its seems to be worse on some that others. This is very annoying as it causes problems with logons.
Is there any way of disabling the number lock function on these laptops?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi
Your right, the num lock key can be switched on or off by using FN & F11, but I was wondering if there is a way to disable the num lock function entirely.
The problem is that on some of the laptops it is activated at switch on and on some it is not. This is causing problems as we are using windows 2000 network and some uses are becoming confused when they try to login and it fails as a result of having characters in their password that are shared with the number keys. They cannot tell that they are typing the wrong letters as they are obscured.
I appreciate that it is easy to switch off the num lock but as a technician it is creating unnecessary work for me with users repeatedly complaining.
    Thanks

  • XP chipset driver will not install in Satellite Pro L20

    Hi
I have recently rebuilt my Satellite Pro L20 to eventually give to my father in law.
I have installed windows XP home on it and have SP2 currently installed.
When I try to install the chipset software from the official area on the Toshiba site it says my operating system does not meet the requirement even though windows XP is listed in the readme file.
Please help as this is supposed to be a Christmas present!
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
Thanks for you reply. I am quite sure that I have downloaded the correct file. THe setup starts with no problems and I receive the message that the OS doe snoto meet the requirement. In the readme file it states that XP is compatable but version 5.10.2600 (Original Release). Is this XP pro?
Thanks again for your help with this. I'm really desperate. Please can you diret me to the area on the intel page that has the correct drivers. On the listed OS for the celeron M processor it only has XP pro?
    Thanks
    Rick
Also, I do not have the recovery disk.

  • Satellite Pro L20 - power cable overheating

    Hello
For several months I've had problems with keys suddenly working intermittently. Although brushing below keys with a toothbrush eased the problem for a while it obviously wasn't the main cause. Different keys each time, so not attributable to individual damaged keys.
When unplugging the power cable the metal part is very hot, and I've worked out the keys problem happens only when the computer is running on a/c AND the battery is fully charged. In other words, no problem on battery or re-charging battery. The adapter is also hot but presume this is 'normal'.
The power cable has been tested directly from another socket and not running from the usual belkin surge protector, so external sources seem ruled out. I have been trying to find another cable/adapter to test but living very rurally doubt this will be possible/practical.
The fan seems to be running OK, the air coming out the side is very warm. It doesn't appear to be dust-clogged. The area of laptop above the fan also gets warm.
Sometimes the computer crashes to black screen or blue screen (on iplayer most recently, maybe other progs too) but sound continues. I off by holding the on button for 5 seconds but it won't power on again for a while. I assume from overheating. But not certain this is always on a/c-not charging, it may be on a/c-charging as well.
Sometimes the computer seems confused whether it's re-charging, on a/c or on battery. At least the icon switches, and requires a session of unplugging before getting it right.
Other times it's the angel machine it's been for the last two years! It's a Satellite Pro L20, the adapter is LiteOn 65W clover, 19V 3.42a. part no PA3396E-1ACA (which I see Is no longer available).
Have searched through but not found any similar problems, but hope someone can advise me what to do next!
    Many thanks in advance

    Hi
I had the L20 series several years ago and as far as I can remember the DC in was at the back near the left notebooks side.
The cooling modules are placed at the left too and I assume the AC adaptor plug could be a little bit warmer due to the hot air which flows out from the left.
But listen Robin, this is only my personal theory and speculation and as the previous user already said, this issue could be related to the faulty AC adaptor too.
Therefore contact the ASP in your country and ask for the further handling.
Possibly the technicians will need the faulty part for a check and you will need to send it.
Anyway. contact the guys and ask for the help.
    Good luck

  • Satellite Pro L20-212 - USB2.0 does not work

    Hi,
I own a *Satellite Pro L20-212*, *Windows XP (SP2) is installed, but USB2.0 does not work*. I can't see anything about USB2.0 in the Devicemanager and the speed of the attached USB2.0 devices is at the USB1.1 level.
I don't know which information is needed to help me out with this problem because it should normally work on my notebook (and I know that the notebook has USB2.0 ports).
Do I have to install a special driver in order to use USB2.0 or is there any software on my notebook which I have to enable?
    Thank you very much,
    Frank

    Hi
+Fact is that the notebooks hardware is ok and it seems that you only need to install some MS updates and maybe a chipset driver.+
    True.
+But lets begin with the basics? as I??m not mistaken; the Satellite Pro L20 belongs to the PSL2YE. Therefore you have to choose this series number if you download the drivers.+
    That's what I did.
+On the Toshiba European driver page you will find the Intel Chip Set Utility. Please install it firstly. Do you have an ATI card? If yes install the graphic driver from the Toshiba page because this driver contains the chipset driver for the units with ATI graphic card!!!+
I have an ATI card and I installed the driver from the Toshiba page which includes the chipset driver. That's the first driver I installed on my notebook.
+Secondly you will find the Quick Fix Engineering on the Toshiba page. These are the MS updates which must be installed!!!+
Every single update of Microsoft for Windows XP is installed, so this shouldn't be the problem
+Then the USB ports should be correctly recognized in the device manager and should work.+
USB is recognized, but not as USB 2.0 :-(
+By the way; you should test the USB ports with different external USB devices to ensure that it??s not a USB device malfunction?+
I did that, too. And I used the same decives on Ubuntu to test the USB 2.0 function. And everything worked perfectly.
That's tricky. I don't have the slightest idea what I can do now. The hardware works, the drivers are correct, but it still doesn't work. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
But thank you very much Gipsyman!

  • What is the fastest CPU I could put in Satellite Pro L20

This is a desperate request for help!!
The Football Manager 2010 is coming out soon and my laptop needs to be up to scratch.
I know I need to upgrade it because Football Manager 2009 nearly killed it!
At the moment I have 1.4ghz Intel Celeron M chip and 704mb of ram.
What is the fastest chip I could put in? I've done a bit of research and found I can only have 2gb of ram
The laptop is in perfect working order so I don't want to buy a new one just for the sake of it and its served me well over the last 4 years - I've dropped it enough times! Just need to speed it up a bit!

Hmm... Do you really want to upgrade the pretty old Satellite Pro L20? I mean new notebooks are not so expensive anymore and I doubt that you will get a strong performance boost with new CPU.
Anyway, in your notebook is only the preinstalled CPU pretested and nobody is able to say what other CPUs will run. But you should look on the specifications for other Satellite Pro L20 notebooks. If another L20 is equipped with faster CPU, it should also work in yours. You can try it but in worst case it will not work.
    Good luck!

  • Satellite Pro L20 - Can't get WLAN to work

    Hi,
I'm having problems with my Satellite Pro L20 after a reinstall. The wlan wont work.
I installed the correct driver but have had no luck.
Any body have the same issue?
    Any help would be great

Did you reinstall your notebook with the recovery disk or Microsoft disk?
    Which driver did you install?
You should use the driver from the Toshiba website. Check it again:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Maybe a BIOS could also solve the problem.

  • Satellite Pro L20 doesn't work properly with USB Fast Track audio i.f.

    Hello!
I have used my Fast Track USB on new Toshiba Satellite L40 and I never had problems with it. I could set low latency and I did few songs with it.
Yesterday I bought another notebook, thinking of home recording studio. It's used Toshiba Satellite Pro L20. It doesn't work properly with my interface. When I listen music on Winamp or do anything on Fruity Loops I hear loud clicks, pops, noises. They introduce samples, or they appear during playback or after a sample is stopped.
I noticed, drivers for Satellite Pro L20 are a problem. Its not supported by Toshiba anymore?! The only drivers for chipset are very old and you can download em only from Toshiba website. The chipset is ATI Xpress 200M. Its drivers are with graphic card. Recently I noticed you can download "ATI Catalyst Legacy Display Driver for Windows XP - Motherboard/IGP Drivers 9.11" and CRACK IT to make it possible to install on mobile unit such as L20. Yep its funny but its impossible to do otherwise!
things I have tried and they still not help:
    # drivers replacement, original were released in 2004. I installed recent version.
    # driver settings, low latency, high latency
    # asio and different settings
    # pluging the interface to another usb socket.
    # trying what happens when I use battery and when I use adapter
    # updated bios
    # turned off onboard units such as wifi card, sound card
    # checked IRQ list
    pops still appear.
    my config:
    Toshiba Satellite Pro L20
    Win XP Home SP3
    Celeron M 1,5GHz
    896Mb ram
M-Audio Fast Track USB, drivers: 6.0.2
    Kind regards

Thanks for answer. I still have L40 but I try to run my homerecording on L20. The L40 is now used by whole my family. It's possible to swap them but there's a problem - L20 has Norway keyboard and I'm the only person at home who doesn't often look down while typing. In Poland, we use standard ms keyboard. I'd buy special stickers, it's about only to make special chars get back to their places.
I installed Windows on this computer end set it to best performance possible.
Since I created this thread, guys from M-Audio support tried to solve my problem - nothing helped. I think potential solutions are exhausted.

  • Need to reinstall windows but don't have any CD - Satellite Pro L20

Hi, I wanted to reinstall Windows XP home onto my Satellite Pro L20, but don't have any of the software my laptop came with (read lost the disks). I have a valid XP home key (as its stuck on the bottom of my laptop) but no disc so I tired using a copy of a Windows XP home cd, which didn't work, but did let me get as far as formatting the hard drive.
So right now I'm using Ubuntu, but want to reinstall Windows. Have valid product key but no software to reinstall.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Christopher

    Are you kidding now?
Do you understand English or what?
I will try to be clear enough and constructive too in hope you will understand your situation.
    Some facts for you:
    - Recovery image *CANNOT* be downloaded
    - Following link http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com >Support & Downloads you can find all drivers, tools and utilities for your notebook model
    So back to your situation:
For clean OS installation you have *_two_* options only:
    - if possible order new copy by Toshiba authorized service provider in your country *do you have more questions about that?*
    - you can install operating system using Microsoft installations CD *if you don't have it, it is your problem*
Can you please tell me if all this is clear now?
If you have more questions please ask.
