Satellite Radius P55W has an annoyingly loud fan!?!?!

I’ve had the Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W B5318 (SSD version) for less than a week and love its performance, its very fast, light and the folding screen is awesome. I discovered that the wi-fi on it is inferior, but that’s still acceptable for me, as is the small SDD size (256 GB). What I didn’t expect is the hardware design flaw in these machines, that being the fan. It turns on and off quite frequently at random times, is loud, and the worst part is it may turn on for 45 seconds and then off and it will make a sputtering noise at both ends. Its very distracting and annoying and is a deal breaker so I have to call this laptop a fail and bring it back to Best Buy and get a Lenovo Yoga and leave a bunch of reviews every where to warn people about this laptop. It’s a shame because I really want to keep it and even looked to see if there was any software that will either turn off the fan or slow it down, but there doesn’t exist any for this computer (Speedfan doesn’t support this motherboard apparently). And I cannot get into the BIOS either to adjust the fan’s power function so I don’t really have a recourse. Toshiba, why did you have to include this annoying fan and then not give us the option to control/turn it off? Do any of you find that the fan turns on a lot to the point of being annoying? Audio90

Hello I just bought the Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W with an i7 processor today. There are many things about it that I liked, which is why I bought it.. bought I did notice right away, that the fan does intermittently turn on and off, even when I am not doing anything, or running any programs. It's funny, because I returned a brand new Dell, and got this Toshiba, exactly because the other brand new laptop was doing the same thing! The noise of the fan is not that loud. But I could see it getting bothersome. Plus, my concern is, why is it doing it? And what happens when I begin running Photoshop and many other programs at the same time? Anyway, to anyone with the same or simiar issue, try doing this... the USB port on the left side, right next to the AC adapter plug-in... use it for either a wireless mouse or wireless keyboard. I plugged in a wireless mouse receiver into that port, and as strange as it may sound... the fan problem has gone away for now. I have a couple technical theories as to why this would make a difference.. but I won't share my guesses.. until I know for sure this is a workaround. I would love to hear from anyone who is having a similar fan issue. Except for this problem, I really love this laptop so far. And if possible, don't want to return it, and look for another one with similar specs and performance levels. LaptopFiend (J.M.)

can someone make a comparison of these 2 laptops?    one has a i7-4710HQ processor that is supposed to be better than the i7-4510U processor but the later is laptop is supposed to be a high end better laptop??
    is the S55 a 780 p laptop and the P55W a 1080 p laptop?

    See specs above.
Yes, the Radius screen is 1080p and also has IPS. And it has a volume up/down button. backlit keyboard, and all 3 USB  ports are USB 3.0.
The Radius is missing an Ethernet port. Also, there is a problem that has not yet been resolved regarding its Intel Wireless-N 7260 card. Search this forum and you'll find many have difficulty with connection speed.
I wouldn't consider the difference in processors to matter.

  • Satellite Radius P55W-B112 headphones not working

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W-B112 and I have noticed that whenever I plug in ANY set of headphones the audio plays fine for about 4 to 5 seconds and then it goes crazy and I get incredible interverence, cracking and buzzing. I am wondering if this can be solved via some software update or if it is hardware related and I need to get it serviced. PLEASE HELP

I bought a Satellite S55t-B5260 around Jan 2015.  It has worked fine since I've had it.  Several months ago I upgraded to the Windows 10 Preview edition.  Everything still worked.  All of a sudden about a week ago I noticed my external speakers wouldn't work when pluggd in.  The laptop speakers work fine.  When I plug in external speakers (or even my headphones) the sound comes through and sounds normal for about 2-3 seconds, then drops to a low volume for 1-2 seconds, then turns into static/popping sounds only.  If I unplug and plug them right back in, the same thing happens... works a few seconds normally, then doesn't.  Not sure if it has to do with a recent Windows 10 upgrade or if it's a problem with the speaker jack.

  • Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W doesn't go into Tablet mode

My Toshiba Satellite Radius, that I just purchased and recieved today; when I turn the screen over, to enter "tablet mode" the keyboard  does not deactivate and the screen does not flip to where it is positioned almost like something is wrong with the gyroscope or something. I've looked online but haven't found anyone with a similar problem as mine. I've uninstalled the HID Sensor Collection in device manager and restarted, and then I tried to upgrade it but it says that it is upgraded. I've also upgraded the entire computer. Nothing  seems to be working. Any help would be much appreciated.

Toshiba P55w-B5318.  I have a similar problem. When the screen is bent around, machine does go into tablet mode and screen rotates to whatever orientation is needed.  I can also 'lock' the screen in that position so that auto-rotate doesn't.That's good ... but often in tablet mode the computer suddenly decides it's in laptop mode *without* any movement of the screen, i.e., still wrapped around. The screen spins around regardless of physical position - and then shows the screen lock in 'laptop mode.'  At the moment, if I wait a few seconds, the screen reverts to tablet mode of whatever orientation was locked. Toshiba:  Whatever you are using to detect 'laptop mode' it's either too sensitive or is prone to problems - like the OP indicates.  Whether it's hw or sw I can't say.  Fix it and post the fix here!

  • Brand new U500 has a very loud fan

I received this brand new U500 (customized on Toshiba.com) about 10 days ago - everything works great (love the back-lit keyboard) - but the fan noise is a little louder than what I'm used to.  I had a 6-yr old Dell XPS with a quieter fan than this brand new Toshiba machine.  Basically if I'm standing 20-30 feet away from the laptop I can hear the fan, and one can wonder if this comes from a refrigerator or a vacuum cleaner working in the background.
Has anyone had a similar experience - is this fan noise something I should just learn to accept or do you think I should do something before the computer comes out of warranty?  I really would hate to have to return a brand new computer, but at the same time I think fan issues only get more numerous when a computer gets older.
Just for info, the machine is Satellite U500-ST6322, CORE 2 DUO P7450 2.1GHZ, 4GB RAM, DVD Slot load.
    Thanks a lot.

I've read that if I installed OSX 10.4 then the fan would run quieter.
    Is this the case?
No, that wouldn't make a difference. eMacs are famous for their very noisy fans.
Some say they were originally intended as turbine impellers for Boeing, but were rejected as too large. So Apple picked them up, and modified them for use in the eMac.
eMacs were made to be workhorses in classrooms and their robust design includes that heavy duty fan, which does impose itself quite loudly.
Some people have installed a means to introduce resistance to the fan circuit to lower the voltage and hence the fan speed, in an attempt to quieten it down.
Whilst this practice seems to work, personally I would be concerned about that causing overheating as during summer things can get very hot here, though perhaps would be less concerned if living in the UK.

  • My MacBook Pro 13 has a really loud fan

When I play games on my macbook pro 13 the fan kicks in and it is a really loud one. my cousin has the exact same macbook pro same Early 2011, but his is not as loud as mine. I also like to talk to my firends on skype to so the intergrated mic picks up the fan noise I dont know what to do. Please help.

The 13" is not a 3D gaming machine, it's all integrated graphics and the CPU isn't designed for it.
It only scores 11 on Cinebench.
For that you need a 15" or larger with it's own discrete graphics card. Scores 30-45 depending which card it has.
Many Mac users often buy without realizing what they bought can't do what they expected, Apple really doesn't assist, just stands there and takes your money. You really need to do your comptuer homework.

All we can suggest is don't 3D game, don't block the air ports, use on a level hard surface so air gets underneath and through the machine.
Use it in a cool room.
You can do a SMC reset if the fans are on all the time with no heavy activity.

  • My EMAC G4 has a very loud fan.

I recently bought my first apple machine - a used emac -

But the fan is LOUD - not noisy - I mean it's sounding like an air-conditioning unit on medium and makes listening to any music uncomfortable.
I've read that if I installed OSX 10.4 then the fan would run quieter.
    Is this the case?
Thanks for any help from a new apple user.

  • G4 MDD has REALLY LOUD FAN noise!

    Hello All!
I've just purchased a dual 1.25 GHz MDD G4. It has a much louder fan than the Graphite G4 (Digital Audio) that I have been using. Is there anything that I can do about this? Is this a known issue... or maybe is it just this particular machine?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Just Wondering...
Are loud fans normal for these machines?
Yes. They were nicknamed "The wind-tunnel". The noise was so bad on the early models that Apple offered a free replacement power supply with a quieter fan (and a slightly lower power rating).

  • Macbook pro retina start to make loud fan noise and work slow

I bought macbook pro retina display less than one years ago. For some reason my macbook pro has been making loud fan noise for about five mounth. Whenever macbook pro makes the noise, all the programs start to run slow. Typing, opening safari, and etc takes forever. It takes 20min to 40min for the noise to stop. At first, the macbook pro made noise once or twice in a day, but now it's making the noise frequently; It happens every 2-3 hours. It got to the point where it start to annoying me. Is there a way for me to fix this issue? If not, can I use one year warrenty to fix this problem? Thank you.

If your Mac works slowly when fans turn on, it's quite possible that there's a process which is eating the CPU and/or RAM.
Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), select "All Processes" above "Show" (in the toolbar) and then, order the processes by CPU usage. Do you see any process which is consuming more CPU or RAM? If so, tell us the name.
Additionally, you can reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • New Loud Fan issue

I have an iMac G5 that had the motherboard replaced in September due to the "infamous" display problem.
Everything has been fine since then except recently, the fan slowly creeps up in loudness. I would say after about 45 minutes of light use (web surfing, say) the fan has become annoyingly loud. The only way to stop this is to either put the iMac to sleep or shut it down. And then if I start up immediately, it will be nice and quiet. But again, after about the 45 minutes, the fan has revved up to annoying loudness.
I did recently install OS X 10.4.3 and this all probably started around that time. I did not have this problem until recently. But I'm unsure if there's a direct relationship.
I have tried the few tips I've read on the boards about dealing with loud fans, but nothing seems to help. I have reset SMU, reset PRAM, reset NVRAM and also tried the MacFixit tip about changing the Energy Saving option from Automatic to something else (like highest or reduced); but none of these things have helped.
This is still under warranty and I could take this in, but I thought I'd try here first before actually hauling my machine in.
Does this sound like a fan problem, a power supply problem, an OS 10.4.3 problem? I have no idea. Any clues anyone? Thanks.

In a situation like this, H L, my first step would be to run "Activity Monitor" (from your utilities folder) , seelct the CPU tab and the "Activity Monitor" Window, and see if anything particular is hogging processor time.
You might also want to select the "memory" tab in the same application and see if any particular program is using a disproportionate amount of memory. (Safari , is one application that can actually turn into a "memory hog" when it has been running for a while.)
CPU "hogging" results in an increased load on the processor, causing increases in temperature and resulting fan activity.
Memory hogging can also increase processor load, but will eventually also cause an increase in HD temperature as more things have to be "paged" to and from the HD by the OS's virtual memory scheme. This can be a particular problem if your HD is getting fairly full (down to its last few gigabytes) as the drive's free space is likely to be badly fragmented by this time.
    Cheers

  • Sudden loud fan noise...

    Hi everyone...
I recently had a problem with my Airport connection ("no airport hardware detected") that required me to reset my PRAM not once but twice. Now that that problem is resolved, I have an annoyingly loud fan, from the moment I start up my Mac Mini. I wouldn't really care about this, except that this particular computer is used for my home theatre system, and the loud noise really detracts from the sound experience. Can anyone suggest why this loud fan might be happening? It is noteworthy that I made no other changes to this computer prior to this problem appearing, though I am in the process of performing a Java Release 6 update and Security Update 008-001 right now.
    Thanks in advance,
    Robert

I would suspect that in the process of resetting the PRAM, you may have inadvertently applied a PMU reset, which on Intel-based minis typically causes this fan behavior subsequently.
Try an SMC reset - this has been proven to resolve the issue in at least some cases! Follow this procedure carefully, ensuring you do not hold the power button in while reconnecting the power cable!
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

  • Very loud fan upon starting imac. Does anyone know how to fix?

My iMac has a VERY LOUD fan that turns on during start up and does not stoop.  I tried to shut down and start up again.  I also tried to unplug the machine overnight.  Still happening.
    Anyone have a solution?

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • Toshiba Radius P55W-B5220 Wifi Driver

Hello Everyone, After updating to Windows 10, the Wifi driver was working properly and I navigated and the system was slightly faster over Windows 8.1. After the next reboot, the driver stopped working and the network center said that the adapter was turned off. After investigating, apparently there needs to be an updated driver for Windows 10 in the 18.11.0.x range. Toshiba doesn't provide it yet apparently.
Looking at this link: http://win10upgrade.toshiba.com/swupdate/modellist.aspx?region=TAIS&lang=en&country=US It shows Satellite Radius P50W-B (PSVP2)‎ which is able to be updated. Does this cover the P55W version as well? I'm sure it does as the first few letters of my P/N is PSVP2. Already spoke to support, no avail. I would like to see if anyone can confirm it. I guess we're waiting on Intel to release the updated drivers.  The wireless card is the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260. Anyone had luck?

Yes. In fact if you put the whole part number (PSVP2U-003004) in here, you'll come to a page that lists new software for Windows 10.
It also says "Your selected Toshiba PC is supported for upgrade to Windows 10. Now all of the software for the upgrade is available." There are seven items listed, but there is no new WiFi driver.
I take that to mean the old driver for Windows 8.1 should work. What does it have in Device Manager for Device status of the Wireless-AC 7260?

    Hi,
I am looking to purchase rubber feet for Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W. I could not find them anywhere on internet.
Please let me know if someone finds it.

If no one locates them for you. Call or go to your local PC repair shop, they should have old - bad laptops that they will sell parts from. I made some from rubber, cut to fit and then used superglue to attach to the laptop bottom.
