Satellite T130 keeps restarting instead of shutting down

Just bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite T130 laptop pre-installed with Windows 7, and since we got it, it has had a problem shutting down.
When I press Shut Down, it shuts down ok, all the lights go off as if it just shut down, and then a couple of seconds later, it starts up again.
I can't seem to find the issue here, sometimes it restarts fully into windows, and other times it turns on and hangs without turning on the display etc.
I have tried to update the BIOS, reinstall windows on a second partition, even reinstall every driver from the toshiba website.
It should also be noted that when I put the system to sleep, it puts the PC to sleep and then a couple of seconds later, it restarts, bringing up the good old "an error occurred, would you like to start in save mode, start windows normally" etc.
When entering hibernation mode, it hibernates just find, and then turns back on again...
I've been reading many support forums and none of the solutions worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Im not Satellite T130 owner but the same issue I noticed on my Satellite U500. So I checked the BIOS for following options:
-Wake up on LAN
-Wake up on Keyboard
-USB Sleep & Charge
I disabled all these options and restarted the notebook. After this I noticed that the notebook shuts down properly. :)
Furthermore if you have external devices connected like mouse, keyboard, printer, etc. Remove them all and test it again.

I have a 2009 iMac 24" running 10.6.2. When I select shutdown from the shutdown menu it asks if I want to shutdown and then after selecting yes it starts the shutdown process. After shutting down it immediately restarts. When selecting shutdown from the login screen, it shuts down correctly.
-I've zapped my PRAM
-I did a SMC reset
-I've unselected restart after power failure
-I have a wireless USB mouse connected
-I have Apple's wireless keyboard
Any thoughts?

If it does not happen in the new account (you should try it a few times to make sure), then the cause is usually one of two things, and there is probably not anything wrong with the overall system.
First is a background process that runs in your normal account. Check System Preferences Accounts pane +Login Items+ tab. Remove anything there that you no longer need to have running. Then, with what's left, remove one at a time and test to see if it makes a difference; make sure you note what you removed (and where it is located) so that you can put it back if it was not the cause.
Second are user preference settings. In this case, this is a bit harder to trouble-shoot, because I can't think of any particular user preference file that would make a Mac restart instead of shut down.
If the problem does not happen in a new account, and you can't determine the exact cause, one thing you could do is create a new user account for ongoing permanent use, and transfer your user data from your current account to the new account. Eventually, once everything is working fine, abandon your current account.

Try booting into the Safe Mode, which resets some things. Shutdown from there, if possible.

I disabled Boot on LAN, disabled Wake-On-PME in BIOS, and checked my control panel power settings, but it still restarts instead of shut down. I just got this motherboard and it started doing this ever since I installed it. I did reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows after I installed the motherboard. I'm trying to avoid opening the case again, I don't think I flipped the power switch and reset switch because when I push the reset button or use Start menu's restart, the computer still restarts. I guess I'll double check it again...
for the "clear cmos and load defaults in the bios", this is a brand new motherboard, shouldn't it already have the default settings? and what do I need to do to reinstall the mainboard's chipset drivers?

Macbook Pro retina mid 2012 restarts instead of shut down/sleep

it's been happening since i upgraded from mountain lion 10.8.5 to mavericks 10.9.2 :
my rMBP mid 2012 2.6g 8gb always restarts when i shut it down via apple logo or power button. it also restarts when i choose sleep or i close the lid.
it happens only with charger connected.
once i didn't realize that it happened as "rolling restarts" with lid closed in my bag after i close it, the battery drained out from fully charged (charger disconnected).
with default energy saver setting, it always says "Your computer restarted because of a problem." when i woke it from sleep.
i did reset SMC and NVRAM but it didn't solve that problem.
also, at the beginning of the problem, kernel panic happened so often.
fyi, i have only 2 or 3 kernel panic when i run it with mountain lion.
any solution for that?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Macbook pro restarts instead of shutting down. Just picked up from genius bar!

Hello, I've just picked up my macbook pro from the genius bar, I had the airport card and dvd drive replaced and when I got home i noticed that when i press shut down the laptop restarts..any thoughts? Thanks in advance

That is certainly frustrating, take it in and find another issue. Have you tried an SMC reset to see if that helps?
If that doesn't work, I would take it back and have them see what they did wrong, if they did anything wrong, becasue it should be working right after service.

My imac restarts insteads of shut down

hello i am new to the mac...so bare with me.
i am using a 27" intel i7 mac os x lion, version 10.7.2
hmm ... i noticed from day one...that sometimes when i click the apple>shut down...it does everything like a shut down but it spins the dvd-r and restarts...i thought maybe i am clicking the wrong thing.
but i did it again and it does it all the time...
it does prompt me..."re open windows when logging back in" i don't know if that is an issue, i leave it checked as i have everything closed/quit before i even shut down.
i am lost of what to do, i am not too technical in the in and outs of the mac, i do not want to delete any files or anything too make it unstable.

p.s. i was a pc guy for all my life but man o man the mac is beautiful. just wish winamp would work on it lol

Something is clearly wrong however I'm not sure why you are shutting down the machine daily. On page 16 of your owners manual it says:
Putting Your iMac to Sleep
If you‘ll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When youriMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass thestartup process.
Also you will find in the manual the phone number for AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support. Now is a good time to begin using it. They're open M-Saturday during normal business hours.

Macbook Pro restarting instead of shutting down?

I recently installed OSX Mavericks for my macbook pro, and ever since then it seems to be having issues shutting down. Every time I choose shut down from the computer menus it takes a long time to shut down, but then restarts itself. I thought this may have had something to do with my USB Wireless dongle but I bought a new one to try and solve the issue but it hasn't?
I don't know whethere this is something to do with Mavericks, or whether it is my macbook but any help you can give me would be extremely useful!
I have reset the PRAM and SMC, have checked the daylight savings settings but nothing has helped...
Also, I don't know if it is related but I can't get my keyboard to stop pressing the 'q' button when I type which is extremely annoying especially when putting in passwords! I had a new keyboard fitted around 6 months ago, but this only started aqfter installing mavericks... HELP!!

No ideas Michael but some suggestions that might resolve the problem.
How long is it since you ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions? If a long time I would do this. Note whether you have a long list of permissions which needed repair and for the greater part were repaired.
You can also run Check Disk from Disk Utility. If this indicates repairs are needed you should restart from your original installation disk or the latest system upgrade disk you have - holding the c key until the Apple logo appears. On the first screen select your language & continue to the next screen which will have a menu bar. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities or Tools menu. This will allow you to run Disk repair. If repairs are needed and shown as completed re-run this option until you no longer have any repairs needed.
Now it's possible that neither of these procedures will resolve the problem. You will only find this out by using your computer normally. If the problem continues get back to this forum and let us know so that we can offer further suggestions.

Brand new K8T NEO-V board restarts instead of shutting down from Windows

Tonight I installed the brand new board from MSI. It is a replacement for a defective one. When I click on shut down in Windows XP Pro, it shuts down and then immediately powers back up.
ALL the parts are the same as before, the only change is the replacement motherboard. The new one is the exact same model as the old one, so nothing has changed. The old one powered off fine, it's problem was that the USB ports stopped working. I changed nothing in Windows either. I am using the defaults on the BIOS. Made sure to set it to defaults to try to fix this problem.
I also unhooked the reset and power buttons to see if perhaps they were defective. Also pulled out all the cards except the video. None of those things made any difference. It was a long-shot, but I tried them anyway.
Since setting the BIOS to default settings didn't help, I went into the power management section of BIOS and turned all the wake up features to disable. That also made no difference.
When I searched for this problem on the forum, I found two references about a year ago. They seem to have the exact same problem so I tried to do what the suggestions for those were. That made no difference. There was a reference to APC or something like that in Windows control panel. I am not familiar with whatever it said and I could not find it in the control panel. It should be set to power down when I tell it to though. I am not aware of any setting in Windows that would make it not power down and stay off.

bretware and Hans, thank you for the replys. The BIOS was already set to power off after a power failure so I did not need to change it. I tried booting into safe mode and shutting off; same results. The network adapter is a VIA chipset, rather than the Realtek; the wakeup setting is unchecked and grayed out because I unchecked the option to power the adapter off when it is not used; that also made no difference.
I will now tear the machine apart, yet again, and breadboard it on the bench with a different power supply. I sent an urgent e-mail to MSI, hopefully they will respond in the next couple of hours.

MacBook restarts instead of shutting down

Hi all,
Ok so I had the dreaded "water spill accident" on my MacBook a few days ago (and for those of you who suffered the same accident here might be a little hope !)
It did instantly "shutdown" (at that time I would have said "died")
I unplugged the charger and removed battery (lucky I have an old model with "user serviceable" battery...)
After a few hours of CPR with hairdryer, heater, fans and all... still dead...
Then I put it and the battery in a plastic bag for a few days with desiccant ?, moisture absorber ?, well don't know how to call it but the grains absorbing humidity that you usually use in cupboards to keep clothes dry...
After 3 days of this treatment it came magically back to life.
Everything was fine (apart from the disk needing to be repaired, catalog rebuilt and so on... but well good enough for me !)
Now everything is working fine except one strange thing : it will never shutdown (only if I force it by pressing the power button for seconds).
Instead it reboots. May I choose shutdown from Apple Menu, from terminal, from timed sleep, anything it won't. It will just restart.
I tried everything, reset of SMC/PRAM, manually emptying NVRAM in terminal, playing with every option of energy saver... nothing changes.
I even formatted/zeroed my disk and reinstalled a clean system... nothing.
Tried to apply a firmware reset but it won't let me do it, I keep the power button down, diod blinks, I put the CD but then it just restarts (might be the cause of its "I don't shutdown" problem).
I know the obvious answer is "your motherboard is fried".
But well you know... since everything else is really fine... (I mean it sleeps normally, battery discharges/recharges ok)...
Does anyone see a solution I could try ? Is there somewhere a mysterious memory keeping track of this power management that I could reset ? (yeah SMC reset did not do the trick...)
I'm thinking this because there is this option of "turning computer back on after power loss" (don't know how it is called in english I'm using a french system) that would imply that the Mac has a way to know : well electricity went off abnormally last time, now I'm turned off but power is back, time to go to work !
Any insight, help, advice welcome, I'm ready to try even the craziest solutions since this is a very strange behavior...

Restarts after a spill may be due to the wrong instruction coming from the power button, or the power manager due to a short somewhere. If you have any homeowners/renters insurance it may cover the cost of getting it repaired. Sometimes if you purchase with a credit card, they may have their own insurance. Check with those first before taking it in to repair to make sure it won't impact your deductable significantly for you.
In the future never leave food nor drink near computers. Accidents do happen, and can cause significant damage to your machine. Some universities will not allow you to bring those into their labs, without expulsion for that reason.

Tracy, it sounds to me like you'd be happier with a basic phone. Do not pay for an expensive smartphone and monthly data plan when all you want is something to make calls. You have 14 days to return it, and do not let the rep talk you into another smartphone if that is not what you want.
You can buy a basic phone here, on amazon.com, on eBay, etc. I have seen the original RAZRs (the nonsmartphones) sold new on eBay. If you buy there, make sure it's Verizon branded, not prepay only, and it has a clean electronic serial number (ESN) that you check with Verizon before you pay for the phone.
Another idea: You can buy a new LG Cosmos 2, a messaging phone, off-contract for $150 on Amazon, or get it through Verizon on a two-year contract.

Satellite P300 keeps restarting itself after initial start up screen.

My Satellite P300 keeps restarting itself after the initial start up screen.
The initial start up screen with the F2 & F12 options at the bottom appears, the screen then goes black, then a cursor appears in the top left hand corner and flashes a couple of times. Then the laptop shuts down and restarts itself and goes through the same process over and over.
This is all with the power adaptor plugged in. If unplugged, it will go through the above mentioned process and shut itself down with no restart.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

F8 is not listed in this meny, just F2 and F12 but F8 should help you to enter Advanced boot options .
Can you please give an answer to C3POs question?
Have you made some hardware upgrades in the past (RAM, HDD)?
Have you changed anything?

Macbook air 11in 10.7.4 keeps asking me to shut down my computer?

This just started this evening. I get a pop-iup every 30 secs or so asking me if i want to shut down my computer. There's also a box that asks if I want to reopen the windows when I log back in. There are four choices - restart sleep cancel shut down. It seems to toggle between 30 and 60 seconds and then sometimes one right after the other in quick succession. Very strange, first time seeing something like this. I was carrying my air when I managed to touch several buttons at once and wonder if I messed something up. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks! T

I don't think he is descibing a kernel panic. He is describing the dialogue box that comes up when you press on the power button in the middle of a session. I have two machines that are now constantly asking if I'm sure if I want to shutdown. I keep hitting the cancel button but, it comes right back up.
Tried resettting the pram but, that didn't work. One machine is a Macbook Air and the other is a MacBookPro. Both have 30" Cinema Displays with the dual-link to mini-displayport adapter. Both Macbooks have thunderbolt ports are running Lion. This was not a problem under Snow Leopard. If I disconnect the monitors, the dialogue box stops coming up.
Is there a incompatibility between thunderbolt, Lion and the older 30" Cinema Display?

Open the folder /Library/Application Support/iPhoto/Plugins/
To navigate to that folder, open the folder "Library" directly on your Macintosh HD, then inside the Library folder go to Application Support, then iPhoto. Is there anything installed?
